Audio Problems w/ ThinkStation S10 and Ubuntu/Mint/Suse

ThinkStation S10 6483-27U (onboard audio through Intel chipset, I think the codec is Analog Devices 1988)
Problem: no audio from internal speaker under Ubuntu 8.10 (32 or 64 bit); Mint 6 (32 bit); or OpenSuSE 11.1 (32 or 64 bit).  I do get audio from front speakerphone jack and rearspeaker jacks.  Internal speaker audio works fine under PC-BSD and Windows Visa.
Attempted solutions that don't work: followed all directions on Ubuntu howto (per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting); follow "Rob's" directions at http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=Special_Interest_Linux&thread.id=316&view=by_dat... (recompiled and reinstalled ALSA) and most of what's on the SuSE boards (at http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AudioTroubleshooting).
Anyone using any of these three with working audio on an S10?
Thanks.
mod edit: added "ThinkStation" to title to prevent confusion

hi,
i found a solution at linux-tested
http://www.linux-tested.com/results/lenovo_s10_6423-27u.html
you need only to change the modprobe.d/alsa.conf and add these lines:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=0
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig
thanks to mike spong from linux-tested

  • ATV2 Audio Problems on BOTH HDMI and Optical w/Denon

I know that it is a known issue that occasionally the ATV2 stops outputting audio over HDMI. But I'm having this problem over the optical out as well. I have it connected to a Denon 3808CI receiver, and it will work as expected for a couple days, they the audio will just go away and the only way to get it back is to unplug the ATV2, which is annoying.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
Also, those of you with Denon receivers... can you chime in if you're having NO problems? Maybe I have a faulty unit...
    Thanks!

I use a 4308 and never had audio trouble with either atv1 or2.

  • Audio problems in Flash Player and Firefox

    Hi everyone!
I have a problem that has been plagueing me for nearly a year now, all audio in all videos i play in Firefox goes out of synch, the video will start ok then at around the two minute mark the audio starts to lag until it's completely left the visual playback behind, the only solution is to keep clicking the video back a few seconds to re-align the audio, this is temp as the audio will slowly drop out of synch again!
This problem has been driving me crazy!
It doesn't happen in Chrome or IE only Firefox. I have posted thread after thread on tech forums but nobody has yet been been able to help, i'm using the latest Firefox. the latest Flash Player (uninstalled and re-installed properly) all my drivers are bang up to date, all caches cleared all....in fact you name it iv'e done it!
This was never an issue until about a year ago, nothing has been installed hardware wise and the only software installed has been updates for ongoing programmes!
Help me Adobey wan kenobi, your my only hope!

    Hi Chris,
Hardware acceleration on or off makes absolutely no difference, i recently tried watching videos in a 100% fresh install and new profile in firefox (no addons) and the problem still occurs albiet a little slower in the new install, ie it takes a little longer to drop out of synch.
There is a noticeable difference in framerate just before the problem occurs, like a very tiny hiccup, from that point on the audio gets left further and further behind, it's remedied by clicking back a few seconds on the video play bar but this is only temporary, lately i've even noticed it happening with live streams from the BBC, once again i must stress, this doesn't happen in Chrome or Opera or IE.

  • Problem with CTX_DOC package and Ubuntu 12.04

I have installed Oracle 11gR2 on Ubuntu 12.04 and also Oracle 12c on another Ubuntu 12.04.
I know that this is not a supported distribution, but we have a case where it's necessary to have Ubuntu.
Following some instructions, that we have read in some posts ,the installation has finished fine.
It seems like everything is working but there is one thing that doesn't work and we needed.
The problem are the calls to CTX_DOC.IFILTER that we neeed to convert some PDF into a BLOB column into HTML, to later insert them into another column.
The error that we get is:
    ORA-06510: PL/SQL: unhandled user-defined exception
    ORA-06512: in "CTXSYS.CTX_DOC",line 3039
    ORA-06510: PL/SQL: unhandled user-defined exception
    ORA-06512: in "CTXSYS.DRVDISP", line 372
    ORA-06510: PL/SQL: unhandled user-defined exception
    ORA-06512: in "IDISC2013.CONTINGUT_DOC", line 16
    ORA-06512: en line 2
(CONTINGUT_DOC is the procedure that makes the call to CTX_DOC.IFILTER)
If I replace ctxhx to another executable script that writes some text to a file I can check that is not launched from the database.
If I call ctxhx from operating system it works fine (also using user oracle)
We have also checked tht LD_LIBRARY and LB_LIBRARY_PATH to include $ORACLE_HOME/ctx/lib and $PATH to include $ORACLE_HOME/ctx/bin
I have read that some people have the same problem but they didn't receive any solution.
    Any idea?
I think that this could be so simple to resolve (install a shared lib, create a symbolic link of a library, create an environment variable, recompile something with an specific option, check a log file, etc.)
    Thanks

I'm always curious about the business case that says it is necessary to run a product on an unsupported platform.

  • Audio problem leads to expensive and unnecessary solution

My problem related to a low level hum and intermittent tones on the audio output to speakers or headphones on my new N305 netbook. I called Toshiba tech support and they established a direct link to my computer, went to the task manager and pointed out that a process was running that was a virus - Csrss.exe which is a critical Windows systems process for Client/Server Runtime management. At that time it was using 0% system resources. At that point he told me the system was corrupt and in order to help me I would have to purchase a $150 Toshiba software warranty in order to help me. This definitely falls into the category of criminal intent in my opinion, and I have totally lost confidence in Toshiba, a name and product I've used and trusted for over 25 years. My objections that this was a hardware problem and should be evaluated as such by sending it in were ignored. I will not purchase Toshiba products in the future.

I have a sharp aquos 42 in HDTV and have connected the video and audio cords as needed but only the video has come up there is no sound. Do you have any suggestions of what I could do?

  • Audio Problems - One Channel Slow and Sometimes Not At All

    Hello,
I'm having a terrible problem, since yesterday - but not in the weeks before. The audio tracks are acting very strange. Sometimes one channel plays normal while the other plays at a reduced speed. Sometimes no audio comes out at all. And when this problem starts happening I continually get the 'Warning - Dropped Frames' box every few seconds.
Strange thing is that last night I was having this problem, and although repairing permissions, and trashing preferences didn't seem to have an effect, after moving all the media to a single location it seemed to be working fine. So, somehow, everything was working great last night when I finished working.
I come in this morning, open the same project that was fine upon closing down last night, hit play and one channel's slow, then it doesn't sound at all, then I don't even get sound in the viewer when I open clips there. And now it's constantly stopping with a 'Warning - Dropped Frames' box.
The system is new as of a month ago, everything was working fine on the first project I did.
The Sequence settings and media settings are all correct - that doesn't seem to be the problem. And There was no problem working on the last project with all the media coming off the 500GB internal hard drive, so I can't imagine I'd need to get an external just for it to work.
My intuition thinks it may have something to do with some of the video clips using time remapping, but the main audio that's causing the problem is a music track, not associated with any of the video (so it shouldn't be linked in any way).
I'm using Final Cut Studio 2, with full updates, etc. on a 24" iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 4GB RAM, 500 GB internal hard drive (100GB still available), running OS X 10.4.10.
    Please help,
the system is basically useless until this is fixed,
    Thanks,
    Matt Morreale

    Matt,
I just read your post... I am having the same issue. You have explained the issue better than I did in my post. You can read my comments under the subject Final Cut Pro 6 Drop Frame Issue... As you will read, my issue started last weekend when I upgraded to Leopard. Yesterday, I spoke with Apple Tech (Final Cut Pro Support)... They had me do a clean install of Leopard and re-install final cut studio. Once that was complete, do the software upate. Problem still existed. I then called them back and they had me do a clean install of the origianal OS software from the disk that came with my Mac Pro. I than re-installed Final Cut Studio and did the software updates... I still have the same issue.. And like your post stated, I can be in a project and the sound is perfect and then hit the play bar again and the sound is either distorted or it is like an echo where the track is playing and sounds like a second track is right behind it. (Almost like listening to a radio talk show and the person has the radio on and you can hear the time delay of their conversation.
The Apple support team told me to go into the user preference inside final cut and uncheck the following boxes...
    Report dropped frames during palayback
    abort ett/ptv on dropped frames
    abort capture on dropped frames
They said by removing the checks on the three items above, I would stop receiving the Dropped Frame Error Message (until i unchecked the boxes), I would get the error message every 29 frames when trying to play the clip in the timeline. However, by remiving the checks, I still have the issue with the audio...
Question, Have you updated your software, and if so is that when the problems started occurring?
I agree with your comment "the system is basically useless until this is fixed", Please keep me posted,
    Thanks
    jbk

  • HP Pavilion dv9218tx Notebook PC and HDMI audio problem with Sony TV and Windows 7

Sound does not come through with the HDMI connection and, on investigation, there is no HDMI audio driver/option.
Noting that there seemed to be an issue with windows 7 and HDMI audio which is addressed by updating the BIOS and the connexant sound driver I have done so to no effect.
The Sony TV is recognised as a standard monitor in the devices for graphics but not for audio
Suggestions as to why HDMI does not appear - including as a disabled service - and what to do t get is available?

    Hello everyone,
Thanks for posting on the HP Forums!
I will definitely assist you with lack of sound issues. Before anything else is done, please make sure you try every step in this thread: Troubleshooting Guide: Audio does not Work after a Certain Period of Time
If every step does not help, please provide the following information:
    1. The computer's model number. If you require assistance locating this information, please reference this website: Guide to finding your notebook product number
    2. The computer's operating system. If you require assistance locating this information, please reference this website to determine your Windows operating system.
    3. Does this occur on certain programs, or all programs?
    4. Have you installed any new software or drivers on this computer, before the issue appeared?
    5. What steps have been attempted from my first post on this thread, and what were the results?
Additionally, if the issue just began occurring, I would perform a system restore. I want you to bring the computer back to the earliest restore point possible, in an attempt to dodge whatever caused the issue. Here is a document on how to perform a System Restore: System Restore
Either way, let me know what happens. Thanks!

  • Audio problem when we pause and again play.

In new mac air 2013, when we play a video file and pause it, after sometime when we again try to play the file , there is no sound.

did you put your Air to sleep with headphones attached, or closed the monitor with phones attached?
Do not sleep your Air (close the monitor with headphones attached) with headphones attached, this is known to affect some Air under Mavericks.
      * this occurrence is being looked into.
Much testing on my own and others as well show that, in some instances, this occurs in Mavericks.
If you choose you may contact Apple for an appt and diagnostics.
However as said, refrain from having phones attached when you close the monitor to prevent this until it is resolved
    Test this and re-verify

  • Weird audio problems with Motion when exporting quicktime videos

I have a Motion project with 2 video clips of people talking. When I create a RAM preview everything plays back fine. When I export a quicktime, the first second or so of each video clip (within the quicktime) have no audio. I've adjusted the in and out of each clip in Motion but I don't think that would make the audio disappear on export. Thinking it was just a bad export, I tried just exporting the audio and the same thing happens.
    Here's what i'm using:
    Mac Pro dual 3.0 Xeon
    10 gigs of RAM
    Motion 2.1.2

    hi,
motion 2 had some odd audio problems that surfaced now and then. The only way round it was to bring the clip into FCP and edit the audio in there, and then export from fcp.
Motion 3 might have fixed this. Not sure havent had the problem for some time, since I make sure all finnishing is done in FCP.
    hope this helps

  • USB audio problems with 2013 iMac

I'm having a strange audio problem with USB microphones and headsets. The issue with my Logitech H650e is shown in this screencast I recorded. In the first part of the screencast, I am not speaking into the mic—yet you can see the levels fluctuating as if there is static playing (not in a natural pattern that you'd see when someone is speaking). In the next part of the video I demonstrate that selecting the built-in iMac mic for input, and then re-selecting the Logitech headset temporarily solves the problem. You can see the input start to fluctuate normally as it should when I am speaking. But at 0:31 in the screencast, you can see the input levels freeze and stop registering anything. I continued to speak until the end of the screencast, but no input was detected. For this screencast, I was on a Go To Webinar call, but the problem occurs regardless of whether I'm using Skype, Go To Webinar, GarageBand or any other software.
The problem with my Blue Yeti USB microphone is also different. In that case, the input does not freeze as it does with the Logitech headset. The levels appear as you would expect, and it seems to work. However, the person on the other end can hear static in the background, even though I don't hear it in my own headphones. I learned this because I just tried to do a Skype interview with the Blue Yeti, and the interviewer told me they could hear static. We closed Skype and called each other back twice, but the problem persisted. Then, suspecting the problem was related to what I described above with the Logitech, I unplugged the Yeti and then plugged it into my Macbook Air 2013 (also running Mavericks). Lo and behold the static completely disappeared.
My Griffin iMic and Audio Technica lavalier mic (attached to the iMic) behaves similarly to the Yeti, except in this case I can hear the static when I speak with my monitoring headphones. The input works but I get a lot of cracking and static in the background. This was confirmed by calling the Skype Test Call number and recording a message, which is then played back.
    Here are the facts:
All 3 of my USB audio microphones/headsets do not work with my 2013 iMac running Mavericks
All 3 of these microphones/headsets worked fine with my 2008 Mac Pro running Mountain Lion
All 3 of these microphones/headsets work fine with my 2013 Macbook Air running Mavericks
In this other thread, several people are reporting similar issues with the iMac 2013 and Mavericks. At least two people did not have the issue when the iMac 2013 was running Mountain Lion. This of course suggests the issue is the combination of the iMac 2013 and Mavericks.

  • Hey Apple, the problem isn't us and isn't going away - QT audio ok but

QT audio ok but QT video just not showing up
Hey Apple, look into this as too many posts on too many forums here verifying that the QT movies work with 3rd party browsers but even the latest Safari beta browser is only delivering audio.
ok, so maybe we aren't running intel dual processors, but we are running the latest versions of os X and QT on our PowerPC computers. someone at Apple needs to wake up and just tell us it's our problem since we haven't bought a new Intel based computer or either make a fix.
after reading so many posts in PowerPC forums --> even Tiger forums, and even QT forums about this problem it can't be explained off as "you installed something on your computer that won't let you see video in a QT movie on this official Apple website"
i expect this post to be heavily monitored or even closed for discussion - but doing so won't wash away the problem. just tell us to get a new intel-duo based mac as our older macs aren't up to par or something - or just tell us something like it's a recognized problem on older macs or video will become a problem in QT more and more with older macs.
more and more users like me are left hanging in thinking that we have installed or done something to our older macs that won't let us see video [only hear audio]. yet the fact remains that if we fire up firefox or a 3rd party browser then all works fine.

I have found a better solution that dragging the plug-in to the desktop:
    I copy /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin into my local directory
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
And now I can see the videos from Apple website over Safari!
I guess "my" Safari doesn't look into the main directory, but into the local one. It should be the other way around, but at least this fixes the problem more elegantly.
Still, the thing is unclear. A colleague with a new MacBook doesn't experience this problem. His local Internet Plug-Ins are empty, and Safari runs perfectly. Weird!?!?!!?!!

  • Problem with audio of my notebook. Audio works through pc speakers and earphones at the same time

    Hi all,
thanks in advance for your advices.
I have a problem with my notebook (HP pavilion g6 2305 sl).
The problem is that when I connect my earphones the audio of my pc don't stop, hence I can hear (music, film, ...) both by earphones and speakers at the same time.
I tried to install again the latest driver audio, but nothing was changed.
I tried to use another pair of earphones, but nothing.
I have noted that if I connect the Jack at my pc, but not until the end, the audio stops from the speakers and goes through the earphones, but only if the jack is not completly inserted in the notebook.
I read a lot of forum on the web but I'm not able to find a solution for my problem.
(ps. the problem comes out suddenly, without any signal. I don't have installed any update or new software before the problem's start)

Right click on speaker icon, lower right screen.
    Choose playback devices.
Select "speakers and headphones" as your default.
    Disable "communications headphones".

  • Can Apple fix the 12 bit audio problem once and for all?

I have had persistent audio problems from I Life V3 all the way up to I Life 06. Sometimes it is synch issues. Sometimes it is audio dropping out. I have been through the various forums and applied the various remedies with some successs, some failure. The basic problem is that I have an extensive quantity of Mini DV tapes dating back to 1997, most recorded with 12 bit sound (prior to 2002). Apple's basic stance has been, you must use 16 bit sound or I Movie and/or I DVD won't work and . And proposes awkward workarounds. Basically placing the onus on it's own consumers. Why can't 12 bit sound support be included in I DVD 06 and these persistent audio issues put to rest once and for all? Is there some overwhelming technical reason why it cannot be done?

I don't know about overwhelming, but the DVD specification (which was not developed by Apple) calls for the audio to be sampled at 16-bit/48KHz (I think you might also be able to use 96KHz as well). This is what the software expects. If you choose to use another sample rate then the software may or may not be able to "fix" it in post. The real problem is that many camcorder manufactures set the audio to 12-bit by default.

  • IdeaPad Z370 and Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit - problem with volume buttons

I recently bought my new Lenovo IdeaPad Z370 without operating system and installed Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit (the pre-installed system was FreeDOS which I decided to remove).
Nearly all is working fine. The only exception are the volume keys: pressing them does start adjusting the volume, but causes a system problem. If I press sound up, the speakers move to immediately to the maximum volume and behave as it I was continuing to press the button.
The same happens when pressing the volume down or sound off buttons. It is then not possible any more to use the keyboard or type anyting, nor change the volume using the touchpad and Ubuntu's speaker symbol. It is also not possible any more to shut down the computer using Ubuntu's virtual shutdown button, but with the real button on the computer.
The touchpad is still working and after putting the computer briefly into standby the problem is solved to the degree that it is possible to use the keyboard etc. again, and the sound volume can be adjusted again with Ubuntu's speaker symbol.
I guess this must be a driver issue that ubuntu 11.1 does not support the buttons.
As well, the one-key-theatre button and the thermal-management button do not work. Pressing them, just nothing happens (except that the light up).
I should mention that installing Ubuntu apparently deleted the partitions including the one-key recovery button. At least this key does now only work like a second power-button. Unfortunately I did not receive the User-guide with the computer but only downloaded from the internet after installing Ubuntu.
I wonder whether apart from adjusting the volume buttons, it might be possible to get the one-key-theatre button and thermal-management-button operational for ubuntu too, and whether the one-key-recovery button could work under ubuntu too. Gparted tells me that I have 2 small partitions of 3.9 GiB each, labeled "extended" and "windows swap", and one of 1.02 GiB which is not in use apart from the main drive of course.

The issue you are encountering is due to driver absence in Linux.
The driver for Linux is not available.  Hope, Ubuntu new version have more applications and drivers.
    Best Regards,
    Tanuj
