Audio Q: changes didn't stay changed

I just got my mac, and followed instructions, I thought...
Took imovie clip into garage band, added audio.Ok pretty easy.Found the extra bar to raise and lower dots to assimilate "ducking" and did that to take out some profanity.Worked great..there.When I sent it back to imovie to "close the deal" and make dvd, the audio dropouts were gone. Everything else was fine.I thought apple changed things as you went and I didn't need to "save" anything. That right? My 1st piece is now on youtube(actress audition with music)
under "armeeuff1" and I'm a little embarassed. Can't show it to certain older people I wanted to.(i.e.investors for Feature)

In general, the flow through GarageBand is a one-way flow. It may add tracks that cannot be handled by iMovie.
So, two options.
1) Use GarageBand to save your movie in the format you prefer. Then drag this movie into iDVD project.
2) You can add audio, cut out profanity in iMovie 08 without getting GarageBand involved.

  • Movie Audio After Changing Start Time

I've searched the forum and I can't find any info about this.
If I change the "Bar Position plays at SMPTE" setting in Song Settings-Synchronization, I can make bar one start at the appropriate place in the movie.... but the audio track I exported to the arrange window is now out of sync. Other than dragging that long track around for every cue, is there an easy way to have the audio re-sync?
I tried re-exporting the audio, but it didn't work. It will slide the audio back to measure -8 but no further, so I have to trim the front-end of the region then slide the region back until it is eventually in sync with the movie.
Any info on some shortcuts to this process?
    Thanks,
    Richard

You are doing everything right. Unfortunately, Logic isn't "smart" enough to extract audio from the QT movie based on where your movie start time is set.
And you really, really don't want to be working in the negative bar areas of Logic. This is a sure way to develop a corrupt song.
The best way to get audio in sync is as follows:
Disable the "hide windows of inactive songs" pref.
Create a new song and load up the movie.
Set the correct frame rate for the song file.
Ensure you're at the proper sample rate (usually 48).
Turn off contiguous sync (accessible in the movie window -- click/hold).
If your movie starts with a timecode burn on the very first frame of the movie file (not first picture, but the very top of the file, even if the file starts with academy leader), set the movie start time and SMPTE start time to agree with that very first frame of the movie).
If your movie starts in the black with no timecode burn, adjust your movie start and SMPTE start to a point where Logic's timecode display is in agreement with the picture's timecode, but ensure that when you're at bar 1 1 1 1 that you're seeing the very very very very first frame in that movie file.
Next, extract the audio to the arrange window. SMPTE-lock the region (a safety precaution) and save this song. It will become your master audio reference.
Now, if you're working on a cue where your movie start time needs to be set to a point other than the very start of the film you're going to get the audio from this reference file each time. And to do so with absolute precision requires the following steps:
    1. Determine the first frame of picture that you will be working to in your cue. Make absolutely sure that you've adjusted your movie start time in this file so that bar 1 1 1 1 starts on the leading frame of the picture. Not in the middle of the frame, not at the end, but the very start (this is done by adjusting the bits value until your 'target frame' changes to the previous frame. Then you move the bits value in the other direction until your target frame appears. Rock the bits value back and forth a bit to ensure, within no more than +/- 2 bits that you're setting movie start to = the leading edge of the frame).
    2. Write down that timecode number (or copy it to the buffer). DO NOT MOVE THE SPL or do anything else at this point other than...
    3. Open your audio reference file. Your cue file will go to the background.
Scroll to that location in that song (or copy the timecode location into Logic's locator from the value you copied into the buffer and hit RETURN). Rock the bits value IN THE LOCATOR (not movie start) to ensure that you're at the leading edge of that frame. Click on (select) the extracted audio region and SMPTE-unlock it if you've locked it previously. Use the SPLIT REGIONS by SONG POSITION command to cut the file.
    4. Select the part of the file to the right of the cut and CMD-C copy. Close your audio reference (save it if you want, cuz if you mess up you won't have to do the whole thing over again).
    5. With that song closed you will now be seeing your actual cue song file. Select a new audio track and CMD-V paste.

  • Mystery audio performance changes and distortion

I listen to a lot of rock, hard rock, and heavy metal on my 80GB Video iPod. In the past two months, I’ve been having problems with distortion and equalization. I do have the latest iTunes and iPod software updates installed and I have re-instaled iTunes and re-initialized the iPod.
Originally, I was using the iPod earbuds and upgraded to vModa Vibes. Most of my music sounded great with an EQ setting of “Dance” with the vModas.
After a while, I started to experience distortion and loss of detail, especially on the left side (crackling). I thought I had damaged the vModa Vibes, so I purchased a pair of Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Earphones.
The Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro earphones sounded terrible with no highs or midrange detail and way too much low range. They seemed to distort easily and overload in the-mid range if there was a lot guitars playing (drowning the details out). I tried all sorts of EQ settings to no avail. The problems remained, even on treble boost, but I didn't have a problem specific to the left side.
I returned the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro earphones and switched back to the vModa Vibes for a while and finally decided, on the recommendation of a friend, to try the Bose TriPort IE earphones.
The Bose TriPort IE earphones were much better than the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro earphones, but still lacked high frequency and mid-range detail as compared to the vModa Vibes.
While switching back and forth between the vModas and the Bose earphones, the sound performance (or equalization) seemed to change at random, even though I kept the EQ set to off.
At one point, the vModas suddenly had incredible bass, while maintaining the other performance characteristics, with the EQ still set to off. Later, I played the same song again, and the bass was normal (all I did was charge the battery with the Apple USB AC adapter).
I’ve been using the vModas again for about a week now, and every time I listen to the same song, it plays differently, sometimes great, sometimes with extra bass, sometimes muddled and distorted. The same thing happens with Bose TriPort IEs, except they aren’t as clear as the vModas.
The performance issues seem to somewhat track battery charging (i.e. – after I charge the iPod up, audio performance changes and it sometimes improves as the battery drains).
I figure that either there is a hardware problem with the iPod or there is some type of EQ virus going around.
Anyone having similar problems or have a solution??

I went out and bought a 2 GB iPod Nano and loaded some songs onto it.
Everything sounds great with the vModa Vibe earphones so I guess my 80 GB video iPod might have a few twisted transistors.
I'll have to try to clear out the 80 GB video iPod and reinitialize/restore it again to see if it corrects the problem.

    Hi
I keep getting this error message:
"One or multiple audio files changed in length!
As a result one audio region changed in length or content position."
But I can't really tell what effect it's having. Slightly worrying though. Any ideas?

Hello.  No, I have not touched any of the files in the project package.  I don't even know how to access them.  Any ideas?  What triggers this?

  • Audio import changes speed of audio

    Hi,
I am trying to edit and mix sound effects and music for a FLASH animation in ProTools.  After much trial and error I figured out how to make an accurate Quick Time of my FLASH file to spot sounds to in ProTools.  The problem is when I import my audio into FLASH, it speeds up making it out of sync with the picture.  I did several tests and it looks like for ever minute of ProTools the audio in FLASH speeds up 2 frames.  Both programs are running at 24 FPS.
It is not a NTSC vs Flim speed issue.  All other programs read my PT audio file correctly and show it to be the correct length with the SFX where I placed them.  FLASH speeds it up, making my animation not time to the music and effects causing me to painfully resync all my layers.
How do I accurately export a sound file into an AIFF format and import it into FLASH without FLASH changing the speed?  I have my audio set to Stream as it should be.  After 3 minutes my audio is 8 frames (1/3 of a second) out of sync with the picture.  This is totally unacceptable to me and my client.
I am highly versed in ProTools and other video software but am brand new to flash.  Ultimately I want my FLASH timeline to be in sync with my PT timeline.  Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Thank you for the ideas.  I really want to import a WAV but I can't make FLASH CS5 import it.  It says "One or more files were not imported because there was a problem reading them."  My WAV file is readable by every other program just fine.  I made an AIFF of exactly the same audio with the same export settings in PT and FLASH will import that except it changes the speed by .1432%
*Note:  This is not an NTSC vs FLIM speed issue otherwise it would be eactly .1%.  I am 100% confident my audio file from PT is at film speed and it does import correctly into other programs like Final Cut without speeding up.
I made an export from PT as an MP3 CBR and that audio file speed up even more.  It was over 1/2 second off right from the beginning.  I don't know how to use the Adobe Media Encoder or what an FLV file is but I am sure I could figure it out.  In theory I shouldn't have to do that as FLASH should import audio without changing the speed for any given format.
Again my FLASH setting for the audio file is set to STREAM.
While we are talking about FLASH, I'd like to figure out how to change my timeline to black and white for a given range of frames in the middle of my animation.  How do I set this up so the B&W effect affects all the layers in the stack for a given range of frames?  I am very new to FLASH so you may have to give me exact steps on what to select and how to change it to a movie clip etc... if that is the way to do this.
    Thanks,
    David

Premiere Pro Timeline with 3 video channels and 4 audio channels, when clip dragged onto timeline audio channels change to 8 channels. Audio track mixer changes too. I edit undo to remove dragged clip and it reverts back to 4 channels of audio on timeline as does the audio mixer?  Any ideas as to why the audio channels and mixer changes?

you can check the clip you are dragging to the timeline, if it has 8 tracks... can check by right clicking it in the project bin, choose modify, audio channels.

I recently had to submit a TVC and discovered that premiere was changing the loudness level after export, when the TVC failed the quality check.
I checked the audio loudness of other formats that I had exported and the same thing had happened the audio loudness, it had changed.
After a bit of troubleshooting I found a workaround. I mixdown all of the tracks in adobe audtion to one track and then imported it into premeire.
Once I did this the audio loudness was not changed after exporting.
Workflow for when it didn't work.
I used edit in adobe audtion for the audio tracks from premiere.
Matched the audio to the loudness level I wanted, and then saved each track.
    Export from premiere.
    To Check Audio Loudness
Bring in exported file into new premiere project
Edit the audio in adobe audtion.
Drag the audio file into match audio to check loudness level.

  • Random Audio Levels Change Exporting STP to Aiff Master

I've been mixing a feature film scene by scene (STP can't seem to handle a full feature mix at once due to memory problems) and generally pleased. However, I've noticed on two out of 10 scenes mixed so far, when I exported the aiff file as a master mix, audio levels on various clips (not all) drop considerably in the mixed file. Even clips in the same track lose audio level in places in the mix, seemingly randomly. It's very weird. Then, when I listen again in STP the levels have been mysteriously dropped as well. NOT the volume slider bar. It stays the same. No change in gain. All LOOKS as it was before exporting but the drops are there. It's as if the exporting process has done something to the STP timeline levels without visually changing anything. If I change the layout screens or play around with the submix locations, all returns to normal in STP. But after I tried exporting again, the same problem happens.
I couldn't find any other forum help with this. Some people suggested 'Render to Action' or 'Flatten Audible Actions' for a similar problem someone else posted, but those options are ghosted out on my multi-track project.
I tried deleting all .plist files related to audio, soundtrack and final cut studio (not easy to find, may have missed something). And this problem doesn't exist on some other scenes using the same process which worked fine.... so it's extremely odd.
I am using minimum filtration, just a limiter with -4.5db and 3db of gain on one track. All dialogue going to a submix and all fx to another. There are only 4 tracks of audio in the mix in question.
I 'analysed' and 'fixed' all phase issues in clips.  No change.
The original recordings are .wav files from a Zoom H4N set at 44.1 hz, but that's the same in all scenes, so not sure why only two would make a problem.  (the project itself is set to 48hz)
I'm fairly experienced in FCP Studio but getting a bit loony over this one, so hope you can offer some help. Please don't suggest using other software like Pro Tools for this mix. It has been working fine and I'm happy with 8 scenes. There must be something simple going on with the 2 odd ones.

I may have found a clue, but still don't know how to fix it. The file from FCP to STP was a stereo file with mic A on left and mic B on right (used a Zoom H4N). I split the file in STP into two mono files and separated the tracks. So actor A is on track 1 and Actor B on 2. All levels fine. I checkerboarded the tracks so there wasn't a lot of overlap. So far so good. Somehow, STP seems to be reading only Track 1 when it does the export; the level drop I'm hearing seems to be Actor B appearing on Actor A's lavalier, even though that data has (supposedly?) been chopped for the checkerboarding. Is this clear? IOW, even though the timeline shows clearly distinct and clearly audible separate mono tracks 1 and 2, the export mix isn't reading it that way and ignores my separation of stereo to 2 mono tracks, preferring to read from only one of the stereo tracks (or possibly only Track 1, but not throughout the track, only where the checkerboarding has occured). And then it somehow 'remembers' the export when it re-opens the project until I make almost any adjustment in STP and it magically returns to normal. Help!!

  • How do I stop my audio from changing pitch when moving it to another track?

I read up a bit on the "Flex" settings, however, I can't seem to turn it completely off. The flex button is not engaged, however, when I move audio from one track to another, the pitch changes. How do I stop this completely?

You have to disable it on the tracks themselves too. The 'main' flex button only turns on and off Flex view, and not flex itself.
    Flex view on, track flexed
Flex view off, track flexed (or not?)
Flex view on, track not flexed

  • Displayed icon for audio files changed with snow install - how to I restore

After installing 10.6, the icons displayed on audio files (aiff, mp3, etc.) became a black square with a music symbol in it when it should be the default application icon or quicktime icon. The icon in the upper left corner of the info window is correct, but the hideous square displays. How do I restore to the correct icon?

I have the same problem. I produce a daily podcast ("Mister Ron's Basement") and I have almost 1500 episodes on my hard drives in both the original recordings (aiff files done with Sound Studio) and mp3 versions. They used to have different icons, and even though the aiff files will still open in Sound Studio automatically, they all have the same black square icon. Used to be, at least you'd get an icon that had the word with the file type on it, but no more. I have changed many of the back ones with Candy Bar, after sorting them by file type, but every new file I create, I have to go to get info and change the icon by hand. Not very professional, and a waste of my time. Can I expect sound icon differentiation to be returned to the Macintosh Operating System at some time in the near future?

  • Unexplained audio level changes

I keep running into a very strange problem. After I've put a sequence together, and done an audio mix (keyframing/rubberbanding audio tracks in FCP), certain pieces of music will be too loud during playback, even though I have them turned down low, or even all the way down. If I stop the playback and start it again from the same spot, or even back it up a few seconds, it plays back correctly.
It seems to do this only with music tracks. I've tried trashing render files, replacing the original files, and I repair my permissions and trash prefs on a regular basis.
    Any suggestions?
    Dual 5oo MHz G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Try this...
In your user prefs, reduce the quality of the audio playback to "medium" or "low" and see if it helps. Using a "low" setting drastically reduces the processor load on your Mac during playback.
The audio quality won't be affected to any degree that will bother you for any listening purpose except serious review for post-production done through a "reference" monitor system of speakers. In my opinion, you should be doing that work outside of FCP in a dedicated audio editor anyway. So practically speaking, changing the playback quality setting shouldn't matter much to you in most cases.
So try setting the audio playback quality to "low" and see what happens.
Another question: are all your audio tracks 16-bit 48Khz sample rate, or are some of them different, which means they need to be rendered before playback?
That could affect real-time playback, too.

  • Audio not changed back in FCP 5.14

I have a simple timeline of two clips of video with a single audio track (shots of a field of wheat in the wind with the audio track of one of the shots beneath both) that I'd like to remove some of the wind noise using Soundtrack Pro.
I make the changes in STP and save. Back in FCP the name of the audio track has changed but the audio is still the original.
In FCP I select Send To > Soundtrack Pro Audio File Project
    save it.
STP opens and I do what I got to do there and then SAVE.
    No changes.
    Any ideas?

Yes. I tell FCP to send the file and I save it. STP opens that file automatically and after I make changes to the audio file in STP I save it.
When I go back to FCP the name of the audio track has changed with the (sent) added but the audio is unchanged.

  • Audio quality changes when I drag to timeline

I selected one part of a video, placed it on my timeline and suddenly the audio changed to a terrible quality. The problem is that when I play the same part on the preview it sounds completely normal. I was using the same video(but not the same part) earlier and everything was fine, now every part I try to put on my timeline(I even tested the ones i've already used) gets the audio messed up. I am working with a video of a lesser quality along with an hd one, but I don't know if it has any influence in that, I was using both earlier and i've done it with other project and it was okay but I don't know... Can somebody help?

  • Sometimes lose audio when changing modes SB X-FI Titanium HD

When I change between game and entertainment, sometimes I lose all audio until I reboot. I have a SB X-FI Titaium HD and use DTS encoding. Also for some reason any time I reboot or change modes my receiver goes into "stereo" mode, and I have to manually change it back to DTS. Normally stereo signals show up as Pro Logic mode, and normally it detects DTS/DD and changes by itself. Any Idea why I'm losing sound, or what is kicking my Onkyo receiver into STEREO mode? I still hear the DTS, just only on left and right, downmixed. Once I manually change to DTS it works fine. Had this receiver for 7 years or so, and the only time I have ever seen it just say STEREO before is if I push the "stereo" button.

Where does this problem come from?. A year ago everything was fine, it began on the rise since the end of summer. And do not use latest nvidia 285.62 drivers with latest x-fi drivers, If you had previously lost sound, with them even worse(video drivers works fine, but the sound drivers?, well, you know), the sound began to disappear almost every hour, use the older 275.xx series and below.
