Audio question for XL1/FCP users.....

Hi,
I used an XL1 with radio mic and need to know what is the best way to capture my audio.
FCP gives me the option of capturing the 1st 2channels, the 2nd 2 channels, or a 4 channel mix....
Now the first two channels are the on camera mic, the 2nd two channels are the wireless mic.
Is it best to capture the 2nd 2 channels as that audio is more important but I would also like to have the on camera audio just in case of drop outs? So how does fcp capture the 4 channel mix? Is the left side the first two channels and the right side the 2nd two channels or are all 4 channels mixed together with no separation?
Just wondering because if I want both sets of audio would I have to capture the audio twice?

That's exactly what I did....Just doing a test of the 4 channel mix was and is useless to me...I need to control the wireless separately to the on camera stereo mix so I captured the audio twice. A little more work, capture wise, but the wireless is great on it own with a little from the on camera mic.
that's for everyone's input....I basically did some tests first and then went from there....

Audio question for you Premiere Pro vets...

FCP editor here who is loving the new PPro CS5 and is trying to convince my studio to do our next show on it.
I'm having trouble with one particular audio situation and so far all the help documents I've read aren't giving me an answer:
I'm trying to export a quicktime file with multiple audio tracks. For example: track 1 is a stereo track with all the camera audio, while track 2 is a stereo track with Music & effects. This would create a similar situation of a TV show dumped to tape with channels 1&2 program audio, and channel 3&4 Music and Effects.
My assumed path would be to create 2 submixes: 1 "camera" and 2 "music & Effects." I was then hoping to export a quicktime with each sub mix as a separate audio track inside the exported quicktime. Is this correct?
Can anyone help an old man out?

I have submitted a feature request. Regardless, the ability to map tracks to channels, and the ability to create quicktime files with multiple audio tracks is definitely something that should be possible.
If you're wondering more about the applied use: Besides being able to map tracks to an audio channel for tape, the most important time when this is used is this: At the end of a TV show it's customary for us to export a final quicktime with program audio and music separated: 2 audio tracks in one quicktime. If we want director commentary, that also becomes another audio track inside the quicktime. A "track" can be stereo or mono.
It creates a single quicktime file where all audio elements are separated, allowing us to distribute a single file to multiple departments who may have unique editing/sound requirements. Simplifies things a lot.
As it stands now, we would have to take the quicktime/audio elements back into Final Cut Pro or AVID to achieve this. (Unless someone else knows a way to do in Premiere - I'm all ears).

A few Questions For A New User

Hi, I did a quick search, but did not get direct answers, so I am posting this thread as a group of new user questions (to save forum space). Sorry that they might cover more than one "Forum Category", but they are at least all iPhone 4 questions. Its also pretty sad that none of this is in a manual. As a matter of fact, there is no users manual !, what ever happen to the days where you got a correctly explained Users Manual with a $600 product that is 5" tall ? lol

2- On the opening/home page of the iPhone where you have all them little boxes of app's or stuff (Phone, Contacts, Mail, Safari, Settings, YouTube, iPod, etc..) how can I move them in the order I want them ? And also delete ones I do not want or will never need ? (like YouTube, Stocks, and Game Center)
3- On my older phone (and all older phones I've had including FREE Metro phones) I am able to bluetooth the phone to my laptop (or vice versa) to quickly transfer/send/receive files and stuff back and forth (photos, my voice notes, contact card files, etc..) via Bluetooth - Well I am trying it now with my iPhone, and my laptop sees the iPhone as a device, and even gets as far as a passkey thing, etc.. but the iPhone just sits there spinning its "connection wheel". Triple checked settings on both ends and connection, triple tested, etc.. and as my older phones do it no prob, under same settings, iPhone doesn't seem to bluetooth to my laptop for file sharing. NEITHER will it bluetooth to my other phones that all work elsewhere bluetoothing. Whats the deal ? Is this a known issue ?
4- I am absolutely astonished at the small amount of horribly lame ringtones/text tones, etc.. there is as choices on this iPhone. Is there anyway to get/buy/free download more of them and use them for various ring/tone and alert sources in the iPhone ? If so, where please ?
5- Where is the best place to get 100% supported apps for the iPhone ? Ones that are guaranteed to not cause system conflicts in the iPhone. Also, free ones ? And exactly how do you do it ?
6- Is there a "Extended Battery" available to buy for the iPhone 4 ? If so, whats the best one and where do I get it ?
7- Also, looking for the absolute BEST Bluetooth headset. Money of no concern, but quality of voice and hearing is. Along with intuitive features, etc.. Any suggestions ?

Hello there
1. For Facetime you can communicate with other iPhone 4 users, iPod Touch 4th generation users & Macs running 10.6.4 or later with the Facetime app.
2. To move apps into any order you want, tap and hold on an app until it starts to jiggle then just move them in any order you want. To create a folder drag one app on top of another. Default apps cannot be deleted however it can be moved.
3. Bluetooh file transfer does not exist on the iPhone possibly due to copyright laws.
4. For ringtones you can use your own. For text tones you can't unfortunately.
5. The only place to get Offical iPhone apps is the app store. All apps there are 100% safe and sandboxed.
6. Yes there is extended battery available, check the apple online store.
7. Don't have a suggestion. Sorry

Major motion question for my FCP project

Hey Forum! I think this is the FIRST post I've made for motion, I see some names here, like Patrick S from the Final cut forum...and I've only "just" got into motion: Some background: I bought the "ripple" training series on motion...still learning.
I've run into a "snafu" that I am willing to bet is a simple fix...I just can't find it in Help or in the manual/tutorials: HEREGOES:
I created a neat little animation, two arrows in a ball (very cool working them out in Motion, and very simple too!) . I added a "spin" behavior to it...and had the spinning arrows repel text, then follow a motion path, with cool livetype flowing in behind it...LOOKS GREAT!!!
SO...how the **** do I "layer it" onto my video??? I tried to import the video itesef (.mov) from FCP, but it does not just layer (meaning the black is replaced by the video).... what did I do wrong? HOw do I fix it?

I know this question is answered (and pretty old now) but I stumbled across it whilst looking for something else... and just wanted to check that you didn't have the background set to solid in project properties under the edit menu?
My settings in the general tab of this are background colour: black, and background opacity: transparent. If this was set to solid instead of transparent then you would always have a black background even if you imported your project directly into FCP.
If it was this then please let me know as it'd be nice to think I've actually managed to help somebody. I'm sure though, that you've probably already checked this, but best to be on the safe side.

Question for the G5 Users Out There

This is rather a simple question. I am pondering the possibility of setting up a G5 system for simple editing. Nothing huge and taxing. I promise this is not a question about how to work with Raw 4k files or uncompressed HD files. I'm just the easy stuff, so as I could keep the stronger systems for the bigger work.
I have only had a short time of experience doing edits on a G5. The studio I work at had a G5 dual 2.5ghz and was running the Production Suite, FCP 4.5. The very short amount of time I used it, I was learning FCP, and did very simple DV edits. So I never gave it a good work out. We promptly uprgraded to Studio 1 and a Xeon Machine. So like I said, my experience is limited in the G5 world.
Here is my question. I know that many of you are still using G5's as very active parts of your work. So I am asking what your setups are and what versions of Final Cut are you running? What limitations do you experience, or for that matter, what limitations do you not experience that Apple or others say you should?
I am very much a fan of using what you need and I know that the G5 systems are still very capable of doing a great deal of work and doing it well. So, if anyone feels like chiming in, I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

I still use my Dual 2.0Ghz G5...and for the semi-big stuff...DVCPRO HD. I have a MacPro 3.0 Octo with a Kona 3 at my office...running FCP 6.0.4. And then at home I have the G5 ALSO running FCP 6.0.4, and sporting a Kona LH. I do uncompressed SD work, DVCPRO HD work, Pro Res editing (footage captured on the MacPro). Still a very good viable system. The biggest difference is render times and encoding with compressor. That is where I REALLY feel it. But day to day editing...no issues. And I swap projects back and forth all the time. Both machines running leopard too.

Core functionality questions for a business user thinking of recommending

Currently using WebEx, but they've let me down quite badly recently. I know the Connect solution is good because I've attended meetings before. However, I'm in a trial now and find it pretty cumbersome to set up, certainly compared to Webex.
Could I have some assistance with a couple of key points;
Inviting Participants
It appears that the only way to schedule a meeting and invite attendees is if they exist within my Community, so adding a user for a one-off meeting presumably requires me to also send an email out manually?
This seems a bit rough since in Webex you can just add any number of attendees you want whether they are internal or external, can Adobe Connect really not do this while configuring the meeting?
So I thought maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I can at least password protect the meeting so there's no chance of a crossed wire, but in the trial there doesn't appear to be an option to add password protection to the meeting and test this function?
Could I have some input on these points and a suggestion of the smoothest method to invite a large number of attendees who are external to my company?

Webex provide an out-of-the-box audio dial-in option. However, in Connect it looks like I have to source this myself and handle the integration?
I could handle this (although I have a feeling it will end up costing much more than Webex) but could someone suggest an integration service that would also give me a free trial which I could test with my Connect free trial - thereby allowing me to actually test the thing for real?
SupportTime will tell how quick and useful the support forum is (I find forums are often a bit of a mix-bag most of the time) but is there any telephone support that would be available if I were to buy a subscription to Connect in order to get more rapid support, particularly when just starting?

Connect meetings are persistant. You create the room once and can use it as many times as needed. So, even one-off meetings can be held in an existing room or you can create a new one for that meeting. People can join a meeting as a guest, no setup in Connect needed, or as a registered user, with a username and password for your Connect account. You should only need to send the URL for your room to the attendee(s).

This isn't a room configuration setting. Think of the room as you creating a virtual version of a conference room. It is always there. Access to the room is controlled by you setting the access level or using the in room features to control if others are allowed in your room.

There is the option to have the ability to have a password on a meeting room, but it will be required in addition to the individuals giving a guest name or using a username and password. The way to enable room passcodes is to go to Admininstration > Users and Groups > Edit Login and Password Policies. Toward the bottom of that page will be an option called Enable Meeting Hosts to enforce passcode for room access. Check that box and then click Save at the bottom of the page. You will then see the option to have a passcode of your choosing enabled below the Permissions section of the Edit Meeting page.

I would just send a meeting invite or email with the link to your room. That should be all that is needed. Connect rooms are not unlimited in their capacity, most people have the ability to have upto 100 people in the room, but I recall that trial accounts have lesser capacity.

Adobe doesn't provide teleconferencing service. You should be able to use just about any provider you want with the Universal Voice option, or you can reach out to MeetingOne, Intercall, Arkadin or PGi for a fully integrated phone bridge. Here is a the walkthrough in setting up a Universal Voice bridge, Setting Up Universal Voice - Adobe Connect User Community, fully integrated providers should just need your account credentials. Then the phone bridges can be associated with your room.

you need from the application menu switch to sliide it as deafault and exit and then try reply email it shouls appear now instead of the nokia menu the slide it
in the email now if the lang you want not appear you need to tap the number mode and then up left on the keybard you will see a small tab with 3 parallel lines
click that (is the settings) and add herbew which you have downloaded before, save.
now if you go to mumber menu again down left you will see a small tab with the first 2 letters of your lang
click to change and it should work(it switches to other languages
is not the best keyboard but for me once a time i need to text my old parents is fine and is the only for now that supports all european langs, later will come more but how long???so i have paid for it
after i switch back the nokia menu for normal use if you dont find it very help full for every day use

64 bits question for mac pro users

I am actually in the process of buying a new Mac Pro and I would like to know if someone here could help me to understand what's going on with the 64 bits mode thing on the mac pro.
I have a mac pro 1,1. Now I am using SL, but ML is out for a while. I use Logic 9 and most of my plugins supports the 64 bits mode, but I am sticked to the 32 bits mode.
First question: Is it right to think that going for 64 bits mode computer now will greatly improve the performances and internal memory management on Logic in 64 bits mode with plugins in 64 bits mode?
Second question: Looking at the wiki page for the mac pro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Pro#Specifications), I understand that the 5,1 model is fully 64 bits compatible, but what about the 3,1 and 4,1 models? Are they fully 64 bits compatible if they are upgraded to ML? Why is the kernel not 64 bits?
I would like to buy a used mac pro, which would fit better in my budget right now. But, I am looking for better performances and a 64 bits mode of operation, and these are my priorities right now.

Use all 8 DIMM slots. Result = 17% boost over not.
Use 667MHz 2GB DIMMs = 4% slower (not noticed real world, Barefeats also).
Yes you can't use 8GB DDR3 etc.
I thnk that the issues wtih ML and Lion, the issue witrh some PCIe cards not working, not being bootable, and that it was the first to try to implement the new EFI and SMC in 3 yrs - are bigger issues.
And the cost of system even now is too high without taking into account: RAM, will I need to upgrade the video card it came with? before I can use it.
Yes. Penny wise and pound foolish over 4 yrs old model now (will turn 5 in February) and was first booted by Intel in November 2007.

Ingest question for any Red users

Hi there,
just wanted to get a rough idea on which of the following Red cutters prefer as their ingest method.
(I'm going back to R3D files for main post but all ingest is to Pro res for cutting now)
1. use FCP log & transfer tool
2. use Redcine-x
3. use Rocket cinex
I'm using an octo core 2.93w 16gb ram running os 10.6.2 and FCP 7.0.1, I have searched the forum and am asking over at redforum but just wanted to know what the good people here thought

Conexant Smart Audio Question for W510

Out of curiosity, does the Smart Audio program need to be open or in the system tray for settings to be in effect? If you choose the "run in system tray" option it eats 50MB memory. If you change settings (equalizer, microphone, etc.) and then close the program, does that mean they aren't active and your sound is only using Windows settings?

If I did not remember wrongly, Conexant for W510 is not under a service or 2. If you need the effect, you have to choose run in system tray" option. Yes. If you disabled SmartAudio during startup. When you open SmartAudio, it will load back to the system tray.

Question for 64 bit users

Hello everyone, I've got a really general question so I don't know if I posted it in the correct subforum, if not, please move.
My question goes like this:
¿Does a 64 bit archlinux has all the tools I need?
I'm a freelance programmer so I do a lot of work in my desktop computer, which doubles as my development server; so I'm thinking of getting a new desktop with more than 4GB of RAM.
Most of my work needs: apache, mysql (mysql workbench) and php, but may need windows stuff which I get from virtualbox,
as well as other scripting languages like python and ruby.
For web development, I need a stable and update version of all mayor web browsers, in firefox's case it would be great to have firebug.
Also, I like to use wine and mplayer. I don't really care about flash player or java stuff (perhaps jdownloader may be an exception).
I'm asking this because some years ago I tried a 64 bit OS and i found it incomplete and unstable, but I'm sure it must be a lot better now. I don't really mind if I have to go and compile stuff as long as the result is stable and update.
I already checked Google and confirmed there 64 bit versions of all my apps, but I would still like your opinion on if they are functional (64 bit mplayer used to be pretty bad, mysql workbench used to crash every 2 clic's, etc.)

Keep in mind that 64bit is capable of running 32bit code. Thanks to multilib and such. You can always selectively choose to install a certain app as 32bit. Or even run a complete 32bit chroot.
My guess is, you will have waaaay more apps running in 64bit than in 32bit only. So it seems backwards to run a 32bit environment for just a few individual apps.
Besides, with 32bit, apart from the RAM issue, there are certain limitations that tend to creep up unexpectedly.
Just as an example:
I was hired to eventually replace a linux sysadmin which the company I work for was unhappy with.
One of the servers runs ffmpeg to automatically convert Videos into other formats. Well thanks to some obscure wmv codec which is not available in 64bit ffmpeg, this guy chose to install the ENTIRE server as 32bit running a PAE Kernel.
Now this server has 24GB of ram and I think, 8 cores. Either way, definetely the kind of machine you want to run with 64bit. But no, because of one stupid little program, and because he apparently thought that running a 32bit chroot would be too "complicated", he installed the whole server with 32bit.
I then demonstrated him a working parallel installation of 64bit and 32bit ffmpeg on my 64bit Desktop, which only took 10 minutes to install. Thats including reading some documentation.
The only case that I can think of, that might require you to stay with 32bit, is if you have some essential hardware, for which no 64bit driver exists, and you need direct access to the hardware. However, that would probably have to be a proprietary driver for some very obscure hardware.

Audio question for new tv

Hi all.
We bought a new panasonic plasma and pick it up tomorrow and the ONLY audio out is the (DIGITAL AUDIO OUT) and my receiver has only a (Digital sa-cd cd input) and Im hoping that that input on the receiver will work with the out of my tv. I think that because it's still a digital input on the receiver it's going to work.
PLEASE tell me this will work.

Does the connector on the TV's output look the same?
There are two fairly widely used standards for digital audio:
Coaxial S/PDIF (usually an orange RCA connector)
Optical (often called TOSLINK) - the input on your receiver is a TOSLINK input.
It looks like you just need a TOSLINK cable between the TV and the receiver. You may need to tweak the TV's settings to output an audio format the receiver understands - TOSLINK allows for many different formats, but many receivers only support a subset of them. (Raw digital stereo at 48 kHz and Dolby Digital are supported by nearly everything. DTS is less well supported, as are higher sampling rate raw formats.)

A question for 15" mbpr users

If you were experiencing throttling under windows, has the latest smc update resolved these issues for you? I am still experiencing throttling, which I believe was caused by the efi update. So I assume I will have to wait for apple to release an efi update for the 15" version (I noticed they recently released one for the 13" version).

As I stated in my first post Apple more then likely has done this for a reason. To stop the system from heating up and causing failure of internal parts. Apple could care less about any users game play. They want to protect the internal so they don't have excessive warranty repairs. Basically the Retina is a Sealed Unit with only limited removeable, replaceable, parts. Most everything is either glued into the case parts or soldered onto the logic board. Any one of those soldered on or glued in parts fail and they have to replace the complete assembly, whether case part or logic board. A real nightmare in the cost department.
If you use it as a computer and not a Game Station do you notice any lagging?
Even in Windows do you notice any lag when doing office or graphic app work?
If not that is all Apple cares about.

Memory question for a new user

How do I check to see how much memory I have available on my Macbook air? I have downloaded several large games and such, and I just want to see what my memory is looking like, and how much is still available? Where do I go to find that?

If you do mean physical memory then launch "Activity Monitor" in utilities folder and you can examine the amount of actual memory currently in use. But as the previous poster mentioned unless you are RUNNING any game it won't matter to your memory use, but your hard disk use.
