Audio randomly changing states - mute & input source

I think it was when I upgraded to 10.4 that my audio started randomly changing the state of mute, muting if it wasn't muted and visa versa, changing the input source, from line to internal mic and visa versa. For example, as best as I have noticed, it seems like when I do a file save in TextEdit maybe the sound will unmute or it might switch input sources. Strange! It is not consistent everytime and is not limited to TextEdit.
Any ideas as to what is causing this?

  • Help: Quartz Composer - Changing the Video Input Source to Firewire/Camera

I'm creating a Quartz composition, although can't seem to be able to select anything other than the built-in iSight camera of my mac. I have a camera attached via Firewire, and can record from it into Quicktime, for example, although can't get it as an input to QC.
I've created a video input source, and wired that to a billboard renderer. It displays the video from the iSight fine, but not from the camera.
    I'm really stuck! Help!

Finally I managed to get this sorted!
I'd managed to miss the settings in the patch's Inspector window. By clicking on the input patch, then the inspector, I selected the DV camera in the settings drop-down.

  • Audio randomly changes

    Hi...
When I preview each of my slides, the audio is correct. But,
when I preview the whole project (which is only 4 or 5 slides
large), the audio from other slides randomly switches around and
    plays on the wrong slides.
    Any advice is much appreciated.
    Thanks...
    Judy

    Hi Judy
In addition to what Larry said, I'll offer up the following.
I've got an E-Mail message from a student that attended a Captivate
class I recently conducted. She is reporting the same behavior as
you are seeing. Part of her message indicates she is seeing
multiple instances of the same Audio file name (but containing
different audio clips) in her project. So I'm guessing that if this
is truly the case, Captivate is becoming confused about which
"Recording 36" should be played when two or more exist.
I have no idea how this can even occur, but am suggesting
that she attempt to rename the different clips so each is unique.
I'm hopeful this will resolve the issue.
Might be something to check. Look inside your Library panel
to see if you have multiple files using the same name. If you see
such behavior, I might suggest attempting to rename so you don't
    see duplicates.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Keyboard input source "randomly" changing???

    Keyboard input source “randomly” changing???
Hi: I’m trying to learn the Dvorak keyboard as a touch typer, so I change my input source from “US” which is hunt and peck to “Dvorak”. But, weirdly (at least to me), I will have changed from one input source to the other, and yet 15’ later in a different program the input source is still on the other.
Is there some kind of auto sensing feature where the input source defaults to whatever was used with that document the last time or something like that? If so, is there a way to disable this feature so that what keyboard layout one chooses as an input source always stays that way until manually changed? Or is there another explanation for this behaviour?
    Thank you very much!!!

In System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Input Sources is the option "Automatically Switch To A Document’s Input Source" selected perhaps?
Alternatively, in System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts under Input Sources a shortcut for switching the input source might be selected. Perhaps you inadvertedly type that key combination sometimes.

  • Input source (input language) changes incorrectly

Snow Leopard finally has this beautiful feature to save the input source state for every application! I've missed this very much. But... It doesn't work for me correctly.
    The problem:
SnowLeo doesn't remember the input source for every application and changes randomly. Here's example: I'm opening Safari, Mail and TextEdit (all native Leo apps), writing in English in Safari + Mail and in Bulgarian in TextEdit. When switching applications the input language doesn't stay the same - after TexEdit , Safari must stay with English, but I'm writing in Bulgarian. And so on.
    What I've tried:
As I said, this happens totally random, I've spent a LOT of time trying to find out some logical pattern or something, but with no luck. I tried to switch languages with mouse only, to disable the keyboard shortcut, to change the language (I've tried Canadian I think), to use different applications, to quit (almost) every process, different account an even different MacOS install on a external USB HDD!!! Funny, but on the fresh installed OS I had the same bug for 10-15 min. and then (after the same tests as before) it somehow disappeared (I think). The same was with the different account on my original HDD - the first time the problem was here, then it just wasn't here. TOTALLY unusual and with no logic at all!!!
I have some friends with Macs and everyone of us is using English and Bulgarian input layouts. And Nobody has a problem except me!
I have 15 years of computer experience (3 of them with Macs) and I'm working as a System administrator, so it's natural for me to troubleshoot all kind of problems, but after month I gave up on this!
The MacMini and the MacOS are both legal with nothing strange connected.

I use 2 keyboard layouts : canadian french for most of my applications (Pages, Microsoft Word, etc) and US English for Photoshop because most Photoshop keyboard shortcuts don't work in canadian french.
The problem is that even if I set Photoshop to US english, it reverts to Canadian French. It usually happens when I switch applications or hide Photoshop and bring it back up again. It is very annoying and the only way I found to stop this, is to turn off "Allow a different one for each document" in the Input Sources preferences pane. I thought the purpose of this option was to assign a different input source or keyboard layout to different applications.

  • Indicator of changing Input Source

    Hi all,
today I noticed strange thing. I'm used to have 2 input sources and change them using Cmd+Alt+Space, but I do'nt like to show the Input menu in menu bar. In earlier versions of OS X there was an indication shown temporarily in the centre of display, something like volume indicator. But in OS X Yosemite this indicator is missing :-(. Is it possible to allow some option to show this list again? Or will this be back in some future upgrade? I really miss this feature, because I don't need to show the input menu in menu bar, but also when changing the input source to see which input is active.
    With regards
    Petr B.

  • Input sources change after restart

    Hello!
I changed my hard disk, and after reinstalling the system, I noticed that after restart the input source changes to US layout, when my and computer is set to Spanish ISO. I cloned my disk using SuperDuper! and everything went fine.
What can I do so the computer starts already in Spanish ISO, not US keyboard layout?
It is an iMac Late 2009, with Fusion Drive and 12 GB memory running Mavericks 10.9.5

I don't know how to fix it, but it's not just you. I've been seeing it for a couple weeks on a fresh install of Yosemite from a wiped SSD.
A little extra info, from my situation: when I installed Yosemite I incorrectly selected "US Extended" as the input source to use. Once installed I corrected it to the regular US keyboard, and added my usual Japanese input source. When I restart, both of those disappear and it reverts to US Extended.
So it's apparently storing the input source used during OS installation somewhere, and hauling that out when I restart. Why and where would it do that, I wonder?

  • Keyboard input source change not being saved.

Since upgrading to 10.9 my original French spec Mac Mini reverts to French Keyboard input source when I close down, even after resetting keyboard input source to British PC on the login screen when booting up. Is there a more permanent setting option stored elsewhere?

    Hi Brendan,
Thanks for the link. I did go into system preferences and checked that British was the default setting. In fact it was the only setting. Have subsequently done a bit more research. Up to now I have been changing input source at the initial login screen from French to British. I have just typed my username and password in using a French keyboard layout without changing the input source from French. It gets me in and the default input source is showing as British, which it is picking up from the system preferences. So there must be a setting somewhere that is specific to the login screen.
Done some more searching online and it looks like it may be a bug!

There seem to be a few workarounds https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5485931
However, I have not worked at this level on a Mac before having a background in Windows support, Only recently getting a Mac. The last comment looks like some kind of Unix stuff, which I know OSX is based on.  Is there an idiots step by step guide anywhere to carry out the plist edit etc?

  • Input source in Login Window - how to change?

    Hello,
I have a Belgian keyboard and I need my default input source to be Belgian.
Problem with Login Window : since I installed Mavericks the default input source in the Login Window is always "U.S."  In the upper right corner of that screen I can change it to Belgian but how do I change it * permanently * to Belgian ?
    Thanks for any help available.

I am convinced that by entering the right values in
    Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences>com.apple.HIToolbox.plist
you can turn around the problem.
But this is a bug. So instead of starting tinkering with that plist I'm waiting for these guys in Cupertino to come up with an official fix in the upcoming release 10.9.1 (some time November, I am told) or 10.9.2 (some time before year-end, as the rumor has it).

  • Why does the Input Source keep changing?

I have two languages in my list of Input Sources - Maori and Australian.  I normally have it set on Maori, but in the last week it's been defaulting back to Australian.  Anyone have any ideas how to resolve the issue??

Go to the User's Library folder. This folder is hidden by default. To unhide: Select the Finder in the Dock. Under Go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you’ll see the Library.
    Scroll to Preferences
Drag the com.apple.finder.plist and the com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the trash.
Log Out under the Apple in the Menu bar
    Log in
    Reset your preferences.
    If it does not stick....
Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.
Run Repair Drive and Repair Permissions using Disk Utility in Recovery.
    Restart
Download and run the combo updater to refresh your OS X files.

  • Built in microphone not working. Can't select the 'Input Source'.

I can't get the built in mic on my laptop to work, i tried any suggestion i could find on internet but i'm still stuck. I haven't used it before with windows or any other distribution so i can't tel if it's a new/old problem. Dreyfus2006, welcome to the forum.
I suggest going into Control Panel / Troubleshooting / Hardware and Sound / Recording Audio.  You can run the troubleshooter to see if it finds the problem.
Also, have you uninstalled and reinstalled the microphone in Control Panel / Device Manger / Audio inputs and outputs?  This may allow you to install the latest driver.
Please click the " Thumbs up + button" if I have helped you and click "Accept as Solution" if your problem is solved.

  • Microphone Input Source Problem

This is a real bummer. I have 4 input options on my
computer: Line-In, Microphone, External Mic, Internal Mic. (btw, I
    also have Captivate version 3)
The problem comes once I launch Captivate, because as soon as
that happens, my microphone can only be recorded while the
"External Mic" input source is checked. But Input Source settings
inside Captivate only gives the selection of Line-In or Microphone,
and my System Audio is greyed out! So whenever I click record, the
default input source on my computer changes to either Line-In or
Microphone, and unchecks that "External Microphone"!!! Then I can't
    record...................
Has anyone experienced this problem? Or have found a solution
    to this problem??? Please help~~~

It could be this or that and hardware issues are tough to
    figure out.
Did you use the audio recording level adjustment setup in
Captivate? You read a sentence and it adjusts the volume setting. A
    pre-amp audio level applet.
Start by going to Control Panel and then select The Sound
options. Depending on your version of Windows, the sound control
options may have some additional options on the menubar that allow
you to pick the devices to enable. Things like WAV, Line-in, MP3,
Midi, Etc may be there. Be sure that you have the options that you
want set to enabled. Make sure that MUTE is not checked. Make sure
that the slider is at about 80-90%.
Test a sound recording with Windows Recorder. You can try the
different input devices that you mentioned.
The sound card driver is another interesting place to look.
Lots of computers use SoundMax or Realtek drivers for this (and of
course Creative, Turtle Beach and and other stand-alone sound
cards). Get the latest drivers from the manufacturer. In many cases
pressing the Dell, Lenovo, HP, Etc update button will get you what
you need. Many sound driver updates require a complete uninstall of
the sound driver software and then you must remove the sound card
driver from Control Panel -- System -- Devices. Reboot and
reinstall by picking the location of the revised driver on bootup
    at hardware recognition.
In using Captivate 2, I have had no problems with my Lavalier
Shure microphone to Line-in or my USB microphone with Line-in. I
did use the Microphone settings but there was a distinct HUMMmmmm
on my machine so I tried Line-In.
I have a Vista machine that will be tested soon. Seems fine
on XP at this point. But the feedback on Vista from my microphone
manufacturers has been very positive and they note that the Vista
    pre-amp is good.
Failing all of the above, look at Adobe for answers. You may
need to cal them and go through this. They may have logged an
experience report-solution that will get you going.
Please report back any solution that works so that others can
    benefit from your experience.

  • Input source frozen when typing into password fields in Safari

For the past few months, I have experienced a behavior in Safari and only in Safari, where as soon as I click into a password field, e.g. a password field in a registration form, OS X automatically changes my input source from my standard US keyboard to the German keyboard layout, which itself is annoying, but it even disables the ability to swap keyboard layputs so I cannot select other input types besides the already chosen German layout. This behavior only applies to password fields and as soon as the field is not selected anymore, everything is back to normal.
This is quite annoying and can't be random behavior. Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone have an explanation or solution to this? There doesn't seem to be an option in Safari to turn this behavior off. Thank you!

    HI,
    Try deleting the keychain.
First quit Safari. Now open Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities). Select Passwords on the left.
Delete any keychains for the sites where the input source changes.
Now open Safari. Navigate to a site you normally login to. Try typing in your user name and password. If all goes well, click Yes when prompted so a new keychain is created.

  • Audio randomly cutting off on T410

I have a Thinkpad T410 and the audio randomly shuts on and off all the time. It never cuts off when there are headphones or speakers attached and when it does it can easily be turned on for a short period of time by hitting the volume button - sometimes up and sometimes it has to be the down. This makes me think it is some sort of software and not hardware or short in the computer. I have tried to reinstall all the audio and that doesn't work and have run several performance scans from Lenovo and diagnostic tools and nothing comes up. Any advice?

My speakers will kick back on if I press the mute button, either up or down volume, or click the mute bottom from the sound window.
The Hotkey software is made of the System Interface Drive (1.02)r, the On Screen Display (6.10.01), the Fullscreen Magnifier (2.15), and the Auto Scroll utility(1.0).  I had a spare HD, so I installed it and used my Lenovo recovery disks to get my laptop back to the state from when I first got it. The versions for Hotkey are listed above. On my original HD, I updated to the latest Hotkey software and still had the problem.
I was originally thinking this was a software issue but now am leaning toward a hardware issue. I did have to send this laptop to Lenovo in May 2011 under warranty because the left speaker crackled and went out. It worked fine when it came back up until 3-4 months ago. I've ordered some new speakers from ebay and will install them to see if that fixes the problem. I found lots of hits from "W" thinkpad owners where the left speaker wire was placed on top of the heat sync and was being shorted out, but haven't seen any "T" owners reporting that.
I'll post an update after I replace the speakers.

  • Toggle a specific input source with Applescript

    Hello to all,
I am trying to write an Applescript to toggle a specific language input source. My main input sources are two, english and greek, but in many occasions i have to enable the "Greek polytonic" keyboard. So, after some search on the internet, I wrote this:
    tell application "System Preferences"
      activate
reveal anchor "InputMenu" of pane id "com.apple.Localization"
    end tell
tell application "System Events" to tell process "System Preferences"
click checkbox of row 76 of table 1 of scroll area 1 of tab group 1 of window 1
    end tell
    quit application "System Preferences"
It compiles OK, but when I run it what happens is that the selected checkbox (the "Greek Polytonic" one) gets checked and INSTANTLY unchecked.
    Why does this happen?
    Thanks in advance
    Dimitris

    Hello
I have confirmed the odd behaviour under 10.5.8. It seems to me the required accessibility is defective under 10.5.8. The GUI scripting code works fine under 10.6.8 but the row index of the enabled input source will change to some smaller number when you reopen the System Preferences.app.
Anyway, I've written a simple command line utility in C, which lets you manipulate the text input source. Here's the recipe for you.
    # Recipe.
    A) To compile and test the C programme.
A1) Copy the code listed below as main.c into new document of text editor (e.g. TextEdit) and save it as plain text named "main.c" on desktop.
A2) In Terminal.app, run the following (type each line followed by return) to create an executable file named "textinputsource" on desktop:
    cd ~/Desktop
gcc -framework Carbon -o textinputsource main.c
A3) In Terminal.app, type the following and return to toggle the enabled/disabled state of the specified input source:
    ./textinputsource -t 'Greek Polytonic'
    B) To create an AppleScript wrapper to call this utility.
B1) Create a new AppleScript script with the following contents and save it as a script bundle or an application bundle:
set p to (path to resource "textinputsource")'s POSIX path
do shell script p's quoted form & " -t 'Greek Polytonic'"
B2) Show package contents (via contextual menu) of the saved bundle and put the executable file "textinputsource" loose in its Contents/Resources directory. Now you can run the script bundle or the application bundle to toggle the input source.
    # Notes.
    • The utility programme has some other options. E.g., you can select the specified source by -s option. See comments in source code for details.
    • You need to have Developer Tools installed to build the programme.
    • Tested under 10.5.8 and 10.6.8 but no warranties of any kind.
    • I noticed that System Preferences.app won't update the check box live when the enabled/disabled state is changed by this utility. You'd need to rerun the System Preferences to reflect the change in its GUI.
    • This is freeware you may use and modify as you like.
