Audio randomly stops working

My mac mini's (OSX 10.5.8) audio always stops suddenly to work, either if I'm watching a video on youtube, playing the iPod connected to the computer or listening to music on iTunes. Both the speakers and the built-in audio output stop working.
I have to plug out and in the speakers, pause and play the music, give it a break (haven't figured out the exact ritual yet), and then after a while it comes back to life.
What should I do to get it back to normal?
Thanks,
Rodrigo

Hi Rodrigo,
Long shot, but next time it happens...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • Audio randomly stopped working

The sound on my computer randomly stopped working yesterday. I think it happened when I installed wine, but I'm not sure...I use alsa and it worked before. I tried rebooting a few times and reinstalling alsa, which didn't help. I did unmute in alsamixer, so that should be ok. From lspci:
00:08.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio (rev b1)
I don't know what other information is necessary, so please tell me what other info would help figure out the problem. I don't see how wine would affect the audio as I had it installed before and the sound worked, I uninstalled for a while to attempt to get rid of left over menu items of uninstalled Windows programs which didnt work but thats not really a problem. I installed Wine again and I have problems this time. I've tried to get sound from my laptop speakers and headphones and through audacious and youtube, and nothing worked. I looked at the alsa page on the wiki, under https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … on_Startup but that is only for people who have multiple sound cards, which I don't (as far as I know lol). Audio is fairly important for me (not vital but still... ) so please help. I probably didn't supply enough information, so tell me if there are any log files I should post or something. I looked through /var/log but didn't see any files looked like they would have something to do with sound/alsa. Thanks

No errors, but only the first test, pcm0 worked. Everything else only gave silence. That didn't help really because audacious/youtube doesnt play either. So I guess it isn't alsa specifice, and therefore isn't wine's fault. (I think?)
It is normal that you only get audio from "HD Audio play front" unless you have a 5.1 setup, so oss works as expected.

  • Audio randomly stops working while watching videos

For the past 3-4 days when I've been watching Netflix, Youtube and other video sites, the sound will randomly turn off while the video still plays. I went to preferences and my input and output have the built in internal speakers seleceted and says they work just fine. There is also no light coming from my headphone jack so it is not that problem as well. I have also tried rebooting it. The only solution I have is pausing the video and then playing again, but this only works for a few minuets before it happens again. My macbook pro is running on 10.6.8 if that helps. Any advice is appreciated.

Try setting your SB card as default (I am assuming you want your sound out through this one) in .asoundrc (create the file) or reorder your soundcards in /etc/modprobe.d/10-alsa.conf. Have you tried playing a sound directly with aplay?
    aplay -D SB /usr/share/sounds/alsa/*.wav
    #or
    aplay -D plug:SB /usr/share/sounds/alsa/*.wav
    Edit:
Do you have any Auto-Mute options on that card? Check alsamixer.
All Automute options have been disabled. Keep in mind that the sound does work for about an hour or two of playing audio, but then just stops. I don't think this is a problem with the card order or selection of the device or anything, but rather a problem with the driver or something like the buffer size which you mentioned. It could also be because of some random program, but that shouldn't be the case since I don't have any unusual audio-related things installed. I have already tried playing sound via aplay, and it does not work. When the sound is fully working, I can play things with aplay just fine without any extra options. When it stops, then aplay doesn't work either.

  • The Audio randomly stops working for no reason.

Half way through the finished video, the audio just cuts out and sometimes plays the audio from other videos over it.
I've tried making a completely new video, but it does exactly the same thing. What is wrong?

I plug in my headset and if i press  the mute mic button, a blue light comes on telling me that headset "is" working. I can press this as much as I want, the blue light will just go on and off. all good.
I then go to speaker button on taskbar and set HP headset as default. If I had left the mutemic on, the light will now go out. no sound will play from my speakers.
    When I click "► Test"
an Error! message appears saying "Failed to play test tone."
My headset has worked previously and sometimes it does work. My efforts to fix the problem seem to be futile and it is a random chance that it will work.
I have tried every USB port on my PC, I have tried updating but it says "The best driver  software for your device is already installed"
As I was typing this I decided to plug it into all my USB ports again and uninstall it from any that do not work, then reboot my PC and try reinstalling it.
While doing this, I encountered this message from Device Manager "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" Updating the driver did not help so I will be uninstalling it from that port.
For one of the USB ports, the first time I tested it, it seemed crackly, I tested it again and the test tone suddenly fails to play.
After restarting, I plugged my headset into my favourite USB port and tested "Failed to play test tone."
I plugged it into the next one down. Crackly noises ensued so I ran the test once more. "Failed to play test tone."
I have got it working in one so I will leave it at that until it that ones stops. The USB port which it works in, was one that it worked in before uninstalling and rebooting.
My problem still remains so if I could have any help, that would be great.
also I am still under warranty so what can I do about that?

  • External Speakers Randomly Stop Working until I "Test" or Disable/Enable

    I'm using a HP Pavillion DV6 Notebook PC Running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1.
External speakers randomly stop working until I "test" or disable/enable them. Headphone/HDMI Audio Works.
    Background
-Recently had to do a clean install of windows.
-Went to the HP Drivers Website and downloaded all of the latest drivers.
-I installed several other programs as well (Flash, Steam, Media Player, Browser)
    -The problem started
    Current Settings
-My deafult device is "Speakers and Headphones: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC"
    -Enhancements are disabled
-Bass and Treble are set to 4
-Format is set to 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality)
-Allowing applications to take exclusive control of the device or not doesn't make a difference (but it's currently off)
    Troubleshooting
-The audio works by plugging in headphones or using an HDMI device
-The audio comes back if I go to my sound settings and hit "Test", or if I disable and re-enable the device
    Error Messages
-Youtube starts the video for 3 seconds, restarts and sputters a bit, and then says that there was an error
-My media player (MusicBee) gives me this message: "Unable to start playback (Error = BASS_ERROR_BUFLOST)"
That's everything I can think of. Any ideas?

  • Sound randomly stops working in Windows 8

I have a new HP PC and the sound randomly stops working.  When the sound stops, it stops in all applications:  iTunes, Web Browser, etc.
    PC DETAILS:
    HP Omni 27 all-in-one desktop
    Windows 8 Pro
In Device Manager, under Sound, this is what I have:
    - AVerMedia H334 MiniCard Hybrid ATSC/QAM
    - Bluetooth Audio Device
    - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
I just set up this new pc this week and I have run all the windows  and drivers updates so everything is up to date.
When I boot up the pc, the sound works fine for a while and then randomly stops working.  For example, if I play music in iTunes 11, the latest version, it may play for 1 minute or it may play for 10 minutes and then it just randomly stops playing sound and the sound will not come back until I reboot and the same thing happens all over again.
I have searched this online and I found quite a few people posting similar sound issues with Windows 8, but I have not found a fix for this problem yet.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sound randomly stops working on Iphone 5c

The sound randomly will stop working. (ringers, audio, etc.) I have had this phone for one day.
Oddly enough, the same thing was going on with my iphone 5 which is a big reason I went and upgraded, now i am just very aggravated!
Anyone know what could be going on??

I have the same problem with my new 5c, seemingly carried over from when I upgraded from my old 3s that had the same problem - all sounds randomly stop working (although vibrate seems to still work) and then randomly start working again.
When you set up your new phone did you 'restore' from your old phone's back-up or set it up completely like a new phone? I did the former so I assume whatever the 'glitch' is, it may be something to do with that.
I called 1-800-MYIPHONE and was advised to do a hard reset - I questioned the point of that when I effectively started from scratch with my new phone only a few weeks ago (well, when I say from scratch I of course mean I 'restored' from my old phone's back-up so that all my stuff would carry over...), plus given the coincidence of having the same problem on my old phone... Next guidance was to restore the phone to factory settings and start over from 'new phone' status, which I did this afternoon... so far so good but we shall see. Here's a link to the guide on how to do it if you want to give it a whirl:

  • USB Ports Randomly Stop Working

I have an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook with Windows 7. All of the ports, 2 2.0 and 2 3.0 ports, began to randomly stop working. My mouse light would still light up, but the mouse wouldn't work. If I rebooted the entire laptop, all of the ports would come back on for a short period of time before they randomly shut off again. They will also come back on for a short period of time if I close the lid for a few seconds and reopen it. However, lately, the 3.0 ports have stopped working entirely and the 2.0 ports stopping is becoming more frequent.
The first time I noticed this was when I was testing a micro usb cable (it has stopped charging and I was testing whether it was the cable or the wall adapter). I plugged the cable into one of the 2.0 ports and it gave me a USB surge warning. Other than that, I haven't received any notices. The drivers are up to date. I have uninstalld the root hubs multiple times. I have tried all kinds of Power plans for the laptop. Nothing works. The USB ports still stop working, and it's becoming increasingly more frustrating.

    Hello Abby_Renee,
With the USB 3.0 port not working, and your 2.0 port working intermittently, I would suggest the following document Troubleshooting USB Connections (Windows 7) for troubleshooting.
In this document there is a specific option for USB 3.0 ports stop working, which would be the best steps to follow for your 3.0 ports. Now for the 2.0 ports, I would suggest USB device not detected by Windows (no device name in device manager), or the other option is USB devices are detected by Windows but are not working properly. The last two options are dependant on the specific errors you are experiencing.
Please let me know the outcome of the troubleshooting steps.
    Good Luck!

  • Integrated microphone randomly stops working

Hi I have a problem with my integrated mic. It just randomly stops working.
It was working fine until a few weeks ago. Then one day suddenly it didnt work. and itl randomly start working again.
One way that it got fixed one time was when i plugged in an external mic i borrowed from a friend and unplugged. after that my integrated mic started working again. the next day it stopped working again.
I have tried everything possible to try and fix it.
    - Went to sound disabled/enabled it.
    - uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers.
    - installed other drivers such as realtek
    - used the windows microphone troubleshoot.
    - tried configuring the microphone.
    - even tried system restore, but i only had like 2 restore points since my laptop is relatively new
Nothing has worked. Can someone please come up with an actual solution to my problem?
My laptop is a dv6-6c50us  with windows 7 64bit home premium.
And the sound that my laptop uses is IDT  high definition codec.
I strongly appreciate any help i can get with this problem.

  • Ethernet Port randomly stopped working - u310 ultrabook

    Hi,
So my Ethernet Port on the u310 Ideapad has randomly stopped working - by that I mean that when I plug in my LAN wire, the lights will show only when I switch on my laptop, till the Windows logo comes on, which is when the lights of the port go off and the port refuses to work.
I need LAN pretty urgently, so I was wondering if someone could please help me out! Thanks!

    Hi Ipsh,
thanks for posting and welcome to the community. Based from your post there is apossibility that it it could be hardware. But however before we confirm let just trya few setting and software adjustment first. At this point I was just wondering if you have tried doing a software update, I would suggest you to uninstall the current drivers you have now and reinstall the drivers below.

Please be informed that the driver above is meant for windows 7, if you have another operating system installed do let me know.

  • USB audio DAC stops working after suspend

I didn't update my mediacenter running arch for a few months so I figured i'd reinstall it because of the filesystem, /lib and grub changes. Now after reinstalling I'm running into the issue that my USB audio DAC stops working after a suspend.
After a suspend speaker-test gives me the following error:

I've tried replugging my DAC and restarting ALSA, without any success. I have to reboot to get sound again.

    Any help is much appreciated!

Unless you can find a way to stop XBMC from using your DAC, I would try hunting down the update which broke it and file a bug report with the appropriate project. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … g_Packages.
I suspect it would be the kernel.
Yes I am suspecting the kernel as well. I'll try to change some options in XBMC to maybe get this working, and if not I'll see how far I can downgrade with the kernel. My last installation was a few months old so I hope it broke not that long ago.
    Thanks for the help

  • ADOBE PREMIERE ELEMENTS 7.0: CLONE STAMP RANDOMLY STOPPED WORKING A WEEK AGO.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS HERE: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2211084
It would mean A LOT TO ME IF anyone HELPED ME. I HAVE THIS SAME EXACT PROBLEM RIGHT NOW AS THAT LINK, EXCEPT MINE IS ONLY THE CLONE STAMP.
I use a Windows Vista and use Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 on it.
I have the same exact problem now, the clone stamp randomly stopped working, a week ago. I tried resetting, doing everything else you can think
of and its just not working. Now I also tried doing that trick on that link that helped that person, but since I have a windows vista I am so lost and
don't know how to get to those settings or where to go. Anyone know anything about how to help fix mine, please reply to me. It would mean so much
to me. What also makes me sad is that I misplaced my cd-rom to uninstall and re-install, thats why I want to get through this naturally and try to fix it without re-installing it and stuff. Please help me.

I read the other post. I wasn't sure from your post if you were able to reset the preference files or not. (I wasn't sure if you ever got the reset dialog.)
Reset application preference files:  When you click the Editor launch icon, press and hold in the ctrl + shift + alt keys. Do not release these three keys. A dialog box will come up saying something like "Delete Photoshop Elements settings file?" After this dialog comes up, you can release those three keys. Click OK to accept.
    See if that works.
If the above, did not work...
Did you just install a program right before this started happening? If so, that program might be "stealing" the alt key. See this article:

  • Cs6 hotkeys randomly stop working

Why do the hotkeys randomly stop working???
Simple ones, like the move tool or the marquee tool.
The only fix i've found is having to CLICK on the tool and then the hotkeys will work again...it's really annoying - never happened in cs5...

There's really nothing in cs6 that makes it worthwhile to switch - and certainily not worth paying an arm and a leg for the "cloud"...biggest scam ever to make more cash.
Well, I certainly share a dislike of the Cloud License.
But »Liquify as a Smart Filter« seems tempting to me.
And while in my opinion »Blur Gallery as a Smart Filter« should have been the way to introduce it, it finally being that way in 13.1 also seems interesting.
Also, I use cs5 daily, and have used photoshop since version "7"...
That does not seem likely to impress many people here. (edited)
my boss keeps asking me if we should upgrade the company from cs5.5...
It is certainly up to you to assess which of the new features are worthwhile to you (and your colleagues).
But what you call »retarded issues« may be actual bugs or user errors or the consequence of lacking system-maintainenace or hardware related or …
There is no way to tell without more information.
Edit: Please not that I am not an Adobe employee.
