Audio Recording in Logic

Having difficulty recording audio into Logic.
Once recorded, their is no wave form representation appearing in the recorded region.
Wave form appears in the Sample Editor and their is an audio signal on play back.
Have I selected a particular preference not knowing?
Any help would be great!

Sorry Pancenter! Clicked the wrong icon. U deserve 20 points in my book. =)
Hi John, no big deal, it's the thought that counts.
Actually, reading the manual wouldn't have helped you on that one. What I meant was reading up on the functions... there's no real reason to change recording delay, it should always be set to the default 0 <zero> unless/until you've tested your system, done the math and need to set the record delay to a specific number.
Some systems with less than great audio drivers need this adjustment.

  • How to convert a software instrument recording to an audio recording? Logic pro X

Hey I'm having serious trouble converting a software instrument recording to an audio recording. I'm trying to record this drum beat, then convert it to an audio file so i can chop it up and sample it on the EXS24. could anyone possibly provide any helpful insight to my dilema? Thank you very much!

im sorry i should've clarified a little further. it is on the drum machine feature in Logic pro X. i want to sample  the 808 kick so i can change the pitch of it in the exs24 but whenever i go to "bounce in place" this message pops up:
""Bounce Regions" in Place can only process regions on audio tracks and/or software instrument tracks. Click      “OK” to deselect all regions on other tracks and continue."
do you have any answers to this specifically?

  • Mac Mini for audio recording using LOGIC X

Has anyone had experience using the latest Mac mini for audio recording? I'm thinking of purchasing the 2.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x8GB 1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm  model. I'll be using Logic X along with Reasons, Wave, UA plugins with a Apollo I/O  I'd appreciate any feedback and or suggestions.

I'd work off of another hard drive as much as possible.  Install the applications to your boot drive, but keep your data on a separate external hard drive.  If you try to run OS, apps and big audio data off of that 5400, I foresee performance issues even with 16GB of RAM.  Also, don't forget a second external hard drive for your backups.

No MBox, but I just patch my turntable into a phono preamp I bought at Radio Shack about 25 years ago (in order to have RIAA equalization) and the preamp outs into your interface and you can record like normal.

  • 21.5" Imac with 2.8ghz Quad-Core i7, 16gb ram and 2 TB hd to use for professional audio recording with Logic 9?

Does anyone have any experience with this exact conifguration? I would like to purchase this and use it for 5-10 years of solid audio production. Any shortcomings?

Ok. So I now I found a local seller who is selling a 2008 Mac Pro. Does anyone want to advice which would be the smarter route to go. This is used, but they are guaranteeing that it is in incredible shape. It's a bit old:
This is a gently used, mechanically sound and tech tested Apple Mac Pro. I am only selling due to our business upgrading, otherwise I love this machine, and would not be selling it. It comes fully loaded (both hardware and software), and is ready for the most robust tasks.
Included with the Mac Pro is 2 brand-new sealed 20.5" Lenovo LCD monitors, Apple Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard. Currently, the Mac Pro is setup for dual monitors on the 512mb NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT video card.
The memory on the Mac Pro has been upgraded to 16GB and an Apple OEM 256 GB Toshiba Solid State Drive (SSD) has been added to increase boot up speeds to mere seconds.  The SSD can be configured to run either OS X Lion or Snow Leopard and will also house all of the applications.  The combination of 16GB RAM and the applications residing on the SSD enables this machine to perform at amazing speeds.  It can seamlessly render video and run other ram intensive applications with ease, making this a perfect addition to anyone's video editing studio.
In addition to the 256 SSD, the Mac Pro has a total of 4 TB of storage space with two separate 2 TB hard drives for storing massive amounts of data. (2 open bays if you wish to add more storage).
    LOADED SOFTWARE:
MS Office 2011 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Communicator
Adobe CS5 Mastersuite (Photoshop, Encore, Flash, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, FireWorks, Catalyst, Contribute, After Effects, Bridge, and much more!)
    Final Cut Pro 7
    iLife 2011
    Aperture 3
    Adobe Acrobat X (PDF Editor)
All applications have been freshly reinstalled with their appropriate activation keys. The machine comes ready to go with no administrative password for either operating system (Lion or Snow Leopard).
Thanks for looking and if you have any questions feel free to ask! This Mac Pro comes with a 30 day warranty against DOA.  Buy with confidence.
If you like the machine, I have a little room to work on the price if you do not want the SSD. Otherwise price is FIRM. This machine is a powerhouse!

  • Is there a way to show/reveal the piano roll (or score) from a midi input when recording an audio track in Logic 9?

I'm trying to record audio tracks in Logic 9 over midi tracks I've created using a software instrument.  I've done this before, and there used to be a no problem in seeing the midi information in the piano roll or the score while recording audio tracks, but it now impossible to reveal.  Has ayone else exerienced this?  Was there a change (update) that eliminated that as an option?  Or did I do something in preferences somewhere (unbeknownst to me when doing it) that has caused this?  Thanks for any suggestions.

Just open the piano roll fro the regions you want and deselect the chain icon at the upper left.

  • Is Logic Pro the Best Audio Recording Software for Mac?

Couple questions. I do a lot of audio production and work currently. I use a gateway with Cubase, and its not bad, but I feel like I need something mroe high end.
I'm looking at the 17 inch Imac. Does anyone record using this computer? How's it sound? Is there any way to put in a new soundcard or something if i don't like the current one?
Secondly, is logic pro the most advanced and best audio recording software for the mac? Are there others as well?
I know about Pro Tools, but it seems like there isn't anything high end enough that is TOO high end.
Does the Pro version have superior mixing capabilties. I am primarily going to be micing a guitar amp and having a mixer run into a firewire port, and also using a preamp for my guitar direct into the computers USB.
Lastly, how are the mixing features on Logic Pro vs. Logic Express? I do a lot of post production mixing as well, and use VST plugins. Speaking of that, will it accomodate using a drum program like BFD through VST or Midi like Cubase will?
    Thanks for your time guys.

Yes, you do indeed need sth more high end.

It's not an iMac, but a faithful PowerBook G4 that I am using. Apples Core Audio is awesome. Your sound, however, will depend on your interface.
Secondly, is logic pro the most advanced and best

That's why we are here, and that's why you ended up in this forum as well
To me personally, Logic sounds warmer and bigger than any ProTools system I've ever heard. From what yopu described as the work you need to do, there is no comparable application. Logic also offers you many more features above and beyond what you currently need to do.
I know about Pro Tools, but it seems like there isn't
anything high end enough that is TOO high end.
Everybody is using PT, and you should maybe get a Light Edition version of it. However, as stated above, Logic offers by far more possibilities.

For your purpose, Logic does have superior mixing capabilities. In my humble opinion, only the popularity of PT made it become the choice of studios and engineers, but things are turning...

If you do post production mixing, forget about Logic Express altogether and go for Logic Pro. LP will accomodate tons of plug-ins, and it comes with a bunch of great one's as well!
The format for the plug-ins is called A(udio) U(nit) and works flawlessly. Many VST plug-ins are also available in AU format and the development of those is moving fast forward.
In other words, yes, you will be able to use BFD in Logic by means of the AU format.

  • I can't get any audio recording to work in Logic X.

I got a new Imac, an Apogee duet and Logic X.
I just got Logic X and I really love everything about it accept I can't record any audio recordings on it.
I can use my old Logic and garageband files and play around and mix them with no problem. The midi works fine as well coming trhoug my headphones and monitors.
Somehow I can't get the Audio to be heard or recorded. Which is a real bummer since I got only 6 songs left on my new album and it is an acoustic album. I bought Logic so I could master the first 5 and the record the last 6. But I'm stuck with garageband at the moment. Because that actually can record the audio throug my duett with no problem. Then I open the songs up in Logic and master and mix them..
    Ay ideas?

If you can record and hear audio in Garageband, it must be down to something in Logic - have you checked the Audio tab in Logic's Preferences and selected your Duet as Output and Input device ?

  • Logic 8 won't play back audio recorded at 48 kHz

So I was recording a small project in Logic 8 on Snow Leopard (10.6.8) the other day when I noticed that audio recorded at 48 kHz wasn't playing back at all. The wave form appeared in the audio region after recording, but the meters on OUT 1-2 weren't lighting up at all. When I switched the project mode to 44.1 kHz, the audio played back fine (except it sounded pitched down and slow). I was in a hurry so I just recorded the whole project at 44.1 kHz instead, even though it should have been 48 kHz.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?

A lot of people have reported this, and it happens to me pretty frequently. Gotta be a known bug, but of course since Apple is always mum about this stuff with absolutely no communication to its customers, we won't know until the next version of Logic is released.

  • Is anyone out there recording multi player audio sessions on logic

I using an apogee 24 input system (symphony), logic 8.01. osx 10.4.11, macpro 2x266, 3 gig. I have been running logic for about 2 years. I am a big fan of the features and the especially the sound of logic.
I have been recording multi player sessions (session players and bands) in Pro tools TDM and HD for many years and would love to work strictly in logic.
I have recently been experimenting with recording some multi player audio/midi sessions with Logic. something like:
    drums-10 audio inputs
    bass-2 audio inputs
    acou gtr 2 audio inputs
    ele gtr 2 audio inputs
    keys -midi controller-virtual inst.
    click/loop-virtual inst
The Apogee hardware seems to be very solid ,and sounds great but I have run into some difficulties with logic's interface in these multi-player sessions.
    1. The record enable status of various channels can be accidently turned on or off by selecting another channel. this makes it very tricky to adjust monitor volumes, sends, inserts and so on when trying to set-up a mix for the players.
    2. when punching in and out there is a gap (hic-up) in the audio playback shortly after you punch out and also an artifact (small region) is often generated at the point of the punch out. ----set-up: punch on the fly, auto input, replace record.
    3. after making a pass with the band and attempting listen. the faders are not active (on audio channels only) while the channels are record armed. So if one wants to adjust a playback/monitor volume the track has to be taken out of record ready which cuts the line of comunication between the players and the control room.
    4. there are some serious problems editing audio on grouped channels. IE. group all drums and cut up the regions and do various edits the regions with-in the groups sometime don't act like they are grouped.
There seems to be little or no discussion of multi-player audio recording in any of the forums.
Is anyone out there tracking in a similar set-up and if so are any of these things causing problems for you
    Thanks

    thanks for the response
I do use the group record enable at times but the group situation in Logic is pretty cumbersome and often times one or more of the group may not be included in the current take so it ends up being a wash as far as convienence goes.
the independent monitoring status is great for what it is intended for but does not affect the situation of the faders not functioning when you monitor audio previously recorded on a record enabled track.
this problem did not exist in lp7 so I feel that it is an oversight or something that fell through the cracks on LP8
my set up is- replace record, auto input and I always have punch on the fly activated. Something I didn't mention in my earlier post about my set-up is, I am using software monitoring. The apogee symphony card is designed and has the speed to through put with about the same(1.6 millsec.)time delay as protools hd. Because I am recording 16 to 20 tracks at once in the box It seems to make sense to work this way. The apogee set-up I am using is 24 in and only 8 out.
with this set-up The hic-cup happens every time just shortly after punch out. this happens on every logic set-up I have ever used in various studios and hardware including an logic demo set-up by apple that I recently went to.
please check it out, it's a simple test
punching in and out is such an important part of audio recording it should be totaly seamless
these problems can be fixed, so I am just trying to raise the awareness of these issues
    thanks

  • Recording Streaming Audio Directly into Logic 8?

Is it possible to record streaming audio directly into Logic 8. I would like to grab some sound bites from web sites and various other places and lay them down as Audio tracks in Logic 8.
I know WireTap Pro will do it for $30 but I wonder if I could just do it in Logic.
Again, thank you for your time.

    Bee Jay wrote:
Or you could also use the loopback trick and just plug your interface's outputs >into it's inputs - be careful of your routing to avoid feedback though...
Hi Bee Jay .. I wonder if you would mind advising on this setup:
Normally I hear everything that comes out of the computer via the following route:
Out of computer via Firewire and into Motu828
Then out of Motu 828 and into Mixer channels 1 & 2 which are set to Monitor only. ie I hear all audio ( including streaming audio from computer) through my monitor speakers and the signal does not go back into Logic.
All the other mixer channels (3 - 16) I use for recording. Mics and line inputs routing these back into the MOTU (and then the computer) by buttons on the individual channel of the mixer. ie If the button is up on a particular mixer channel it comes out the speakers and does not record in Logic. If the button is down then that channel records into Logic (via a loom into the MOTU).
I was warned on no account to press the buttons down on channels 1 & 2 ( because those were the main outs to monitor Logic's signal ) ...
But that if I *switched off the channel output in Logic channel strip* - then I could press down those buttons on Channel 1 and 2 and route whatever audio was coming out of the computer ( iTunes, You Tube etc) back into Logic to record.
I did this some time ago and it worked ... but for some reason, now even though I have the Logic Channel outputs switched off, I still get the most horrendous howling feedback if I try to record Streaming Audio or iTunes.
If you or anyone else has advice on what would be causing this, I would be most grateful

  • Logic Pro and Audio Recording

I just read the incredibly depressing post entitled "should emagic buy back logic?" and I'm more confused than ever about purchasing Logic.
I am primarily a guitar player and will be recording mostly real instruments. I would like to learn more MIDI, but this is not my priority. I am VERY torn between ProTools LE (Digi 002) and Logic with a MOTU.
My question is this: What exactly does everyone mean when they say ProTools does "audio" better than Logic?I mean, what is the MAJOR difference? And should this HEAVILY be taken into consideration when purchasing one or the other? I am really torn here and am going on my SECOND month of contempalation on this issue. I just want to make sure I make the right purchase because either way it is a lot of money and I am pretty much commited to one product or the other once I choose. Thanks for the help everyone.

    Jack Q,
I am in the same boat as you. I did buy Logic pro. I also have a digi001 and thought very much about the decision. I record straight audio and found more midi people working with Logic than protools. My questions before getting Logic about how many people were using it for straight audio did not ellicit an overwhelming response. Here is my opinion based on owning Logic for almost 6months.
The manual (for me) is almost useless. I am a hands on kinda guy and needed to be shown how to do many functions in person.I paid someone to help and it still was and is a huge learning curve. I came from protools which in my opinion is much more user friendly.
I bought logic pro because I have a nice apogee interface and Protools (002)does not support 92 sample rate that my appogee is capable of and higher. I also bought logic because the PLUG INs that come with it are a great value. The plugs that come with the 002 are NO comparison and very costly. I f you do get a protools rig DO NOT GET AN 002. Move up to the HD world because in the long run you will kick yourself.
This forum has helped me so much and I have begun to learn alot!!!!! The people here will really help you...and you CAN COUNT ON THEM.
Certain things about Logic really frustrate me such as there are SO MANY OPTIONS. It is a bit overwhelming. IMO. the editing is cumbersome and confusing with LOGIC.
Some people talk about LOGIC being a creative tool as opposed to protools being more of a simpler recorder and editor.I believe this to be true and ideally it would be great to have both. I am starting to enjoy Logic more and more...but if I had it my way and had the money...I would have PT HD3 and alot of even more money for plug ins.
Logic is a great value. It has lots of fun stuff to play with like loops etc. Depending on what kind of music you make it might also influence your decision. I still love my 001 and have made some good recordings that have been used on TV. I heard some cool things about Logic and wanted to upgrade the QUALITY of my recordings with the Appogee interface which as I've said before was my main reason for getting Logic.
I am a guitar player and also record live drums, bass and keys with Logic. I am still having some trouble adjusting to the nuances of how to keep it simple as a recorder and editor/mixer/master. It is slowly coming together and I can hear that the quality is very good. I personally don't like messing around with key commands as that makes me even more confused. I just lik to point my mouse and go. It seems that no matter how I slice it Logic takes a few more steps than protools does. for expample punching in etc.
ALL AND ALL..I am glad to have 2 systems. Logic familiarity is growing on me and even though I get bothered sometimes...in the long run...with the help of this forum...everything will be smooth and I'll have more time to actually make music. If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail me.
Good luck with your decision..read alot..asl questions an go look at logic in an APPLE STORE or firend house before buyiong

  • Logic Pro 9- Audio Recording with Rewire?!?!

Id really appreciate if someone could help me out with this
I've been running Rewire through Logic Pro 9 and Reason 4, with Reason being the slave of course, and trying to record audio tracks in Logic from Reason. Does anyone know how to do this??
I know how to setup channel auxillary tracks to hear the midi tracks from Reason, and have tried setting up a bus to channel the output to record to an audio track and it hasn't worked
Can anyone please explain how to get an output on an audio track from a Reason midi track to record it please?

The 32bit bridge has a long history of instability... so your experiences are not unusual.
This is probably one of the major reasons why the bridge and use of 32bit plugins, was finally removed in LPX..... as LPX only supports 64bit AU plugins.
However, you can use something like VEP or 32Lives to run 32bit plugins in LP9 64bit mode.. without the use of the 32bit bridge (and in LPX which doesnt have the bridge) and this does improve stability.
See this user tip for links etc...

lo que es midi todo bien suena bien graba bien es solo el audio incluso los vst para guitarra hacen ese ruido o distorcion
-grabe microfono e instrumento en pod x3 en los mismos logic pro ,garage etc etc y ningun problema todo bien

  • Help setting up my audio interface with logic pro x

    Hi everyone,
I am a newbie with regards to home recording and using Logic Pro X and I need some help and advice about setting up my home recording set up for the first time. I want to connect my synthesizer Korg Triton Extreme to my Audio Interface Steinberg UR22 to my Apple Imac computer.
What I would like is if I can create backing tracks or use pre-set sounds or drum patterns from my Korg Triton Extreme synthesizer and then transfer them onto Logic Pro X to help me compose songs.
How should I go about doing this? And what settings should be applied to Logic Pro X so that I can hear the songs as they are being played and recorded?
So far I have connected my synthesizer's two outputs to the two inputs on my Steinberg UR22 Audio Interface. I have also connected the USB point on the audio interface to my Apple Imac computer. But when I have tried to add a drum track from the Korg Triton Extreme synthesizer I cannot seem to add any of the drum sounds. Nothing appears to be recorded despite me trying several times. I cannot hear any sound coming from the audio interface either despite having a pair of headphones plugged into it.
I would also like to find a way to synchronise the drum tracks I want to record from my Korg Triton Extreme synthesizer to Logic Pro X. So that when I click on the record button on Logic Pro X the synthesizer track automatically starts playing and recording on Logic Pro X. Whats the best way to do this? And will I need a Midi cable for any of the things I want to do?
    Many thanks,
    James.

    Hi James
I just got myself a macbook pro and logic pro X, and I also have a Triton Extreme and the UR22. So I know what the learning curve can be like - it's been a long time since I've used a sequencer in a computer.
I assume you are aware of the difference between audio and midi? With your current setup, all you can do is play your Triton and record the sounds as audio loops - you should be able to hear the Triton through headphones plugged into the UR22, and (assuming you have installed the UR22 driver) you can also hear the Triton through your computer speakers (or headphone output) once you tell Logic there is sound coming in from the UR22.
If you want to be able to play the sounds in logic pro, or transfer drum patterns (which are in midi format), you will definitely need midi cables (you may be able to use midi by connecting the Triton's USB out to your computer, but having not tried that, I don't know if it will work - it does on more recent synths)
