Audio scrubbing problem in Soundtrack Pro

Hi, new to this forum but not new to pro audio! I've been all round the houses trying to fix this one; hope somebody knows the answer.
The problem is that although FCP's audio works as expected through the AJA, Soundtrack Pro only outputs playback audio through it. Scrubbed audio outputs through the Mac's audio out and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to change it. With the way the edit suite's set up this means switching the monitoring selector just to hear scrubbing - not the best workflow arrangement!
The AJA device only seems to be recognised by Soundtrack Pro for video, not audio.
I'm using a Mac Pro 2 x 3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with an AJA Io audio/video interface; OS is 10.5.8. I'm also using Final Cut Pro 7.01 and Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks, Doug.

I'm using a Kona 3 in a quad core and it works in all aspects of I/o.
16 tracks in and out and mixing and monitoring in stereo and surround. And yes, I have a proper surround monitoring setup.
I suspect it's the I/o box itself. Maybe, because its outboard it isn't setup to handle that kind of monitoring. Did you ask AJA?

  • Audio Interface Compatibility w/ Soundtrack Pro

I am a fairly new Soundtrack Pro user but have used other multitrack audio editing programs in the past. I am in the market for an audio interface to run my new studio monitors and mics etc. The audio interface I am considering buying is the M-AUDIO FIREWIRE 410. Does anyone out there know about any compatibility issues regarding Soundtrack Pro and this model? Does anyone have any other audio interface brands that are compatible that they would recommend and why? Any and all suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

    Peter,
The FW410 is compatible with STP. In fact, any Core Audio-compatible interface is ok. That said, I wouldn't buy a FW410. I used to have one and I wasn't really satisfied. Drivers problem are one reason but there's other things as well like unbalanced outputs, ordinary mic preamps and average built quality.
I think you should take a look at the Focusrite Saffire. This is a very good interface. You get good mic pres, dual headphone outs with separate headphones mixes, balanced outputs, DSP Comp and EQ for tracking. I'm very satisfied with mine. Also, since it's a class-compliant device, you don't need to wait for drivers updates each time there's a OS update.

  • Tascam US-144mkII Causing Problems in Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1

Just got a Tascam US-144mkII, as recommended by the Apple site, to use with Soundtrack Pro 3. So far, though, it's causing a problem - while I can hear audio that I'm playing and I can monitor that sound through the Tascam, the cursor won't move when I record and if I try to play any loops, I get an error - a CNSExceptionWrarpper?. If I unplug the Tascam, everything works fine.
    I'm using the latest driver - 2.0.
Any suggestions on how I can get this thing working would be greatly appreciated...

You're right. It wasn't recommended. I should've said it is supported.

  • Corrupted audio when exporting in Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2

Hello, I am a sound designer and have been evaluating Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2 as an alternative to Pro Tools (I work with video editors who use FCP). The program has been working well until I have tried to export my work.
I have created a project containing audio of the same sample rate as both the project and the computer's hardware - 48kHz (eliminating a problem already highlighted by others) and using no DSP. Although realtime playback is fine, the exported audio contains blocks silence as well as wrongly mixed levels.
I have noticed firstly that the problem changes depending on where the loop markers are set. The problem is sometimes eliminated if there is a reasonable amount of silence at the beginning and end of the region being exported. Secondly, I notice that fades are not being exported correctly - either being exported as silence or as full level (as if there is no fade applied).
I have also tried using Soundtrack Pro version 1, and this exports fine. It's worth noting, however, that this version of the software does not allow the user to apply fades to the audio (without opening and editing the waveform itself).
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I know the problem you mean - the plugin settings are lost when exporting. I think this is a separate issue that has been fixed. An example of the problem would be when adding a fade to a sound, and then exporting. The fade portion of the sound would export as silence, but the rest of the sound would export fine. Very bizarre, and if no-one else is experiencing it, possibly it is to do with my machine. Unfortunately it makes the software unusable for me. My colleague, who is running the same setup as me, has exactly the same problem.
The main thing I like about Soundtrack is the ability to add effects non-destructively to each sound, and then go back and edit each effect later on. Also, the video display is good- showing you the video at the beginning and end of a sound when moving it, plus also where your mouse pointer is clicked. It has the potential to be a very good program.
Pro Tools HD is very good but very expensive. I know some people who don't like it, so I think its down to personal preference. It is used in every professional studio I have worked in, making it good for compatibility. You also won't find nasty bugs like the one i've described in Soundtrack - they've been developing the software for a long time. Personally, I find Pro Tools very quick to work with and very stable. Also, I would recommend Pro Tools LE if you're not going to be restricted by 48 tracks and lack of surround mixing.

  • Audio quickening up in Soundtrack pro?

I am having a problem with my sound. The footage is an mp4 format and when I send the audio to soundtrack pro and normalise it the audio back in FCP is then out of sync. It's as if the audio rate has quickened ever so slightly. Can anyone shed some light on why it would do this please?
    Thanks
    Bethan

Your camera probably records the audio in 44.1khz. NLE is correct. When you convert the video to something natively editable (ProRes for example) make sure you resample the audio to 48khz as well. The standard ProRes presets in Compressor are set to simply pass the audio through at the current sample rate. You need to change this and create your own preset.

  • Is my weedy graphics card causing problems in Soundtrack Pro?

Newcomer to Soundtrack Pro here, just getting to grips with what I can tell is a very powerful application, but I have a very basic question.
I am running a relatively old G5, still with its factory standard graphics card -- nVidia GeForce FX 5200 64MB VRAM -- yet somehow I have been able to get by, first in Final Cut Express for a couple of years and more recently for the last year in Final Cut Studio.
My latest project was very ambitious, at least for me: a 13-minute short film shot in DVCPro HD, for which I upgraded to Final Cut Studio. There was a steep learning curve, but I struggled on and got by with my 64MB VRAM. Then I really hit a wall when it came to the sound mix in Soundtrack Pro. I had more than 70 tracks and it was murder, dropping frames and stuttering. I bought a new external 500 GB hard drive to mix to and that improved things a little, but it was agonizingly slow with terrible audio drop frame playback problems and has resulted in a very uneven mix.
If I finally bite the bullet and invest in a better graphics card -- the 256MB GeForce 6800 Ultra was recommended to me, but they are expensive and hard to come by -- will that help the performance in Soundtrack Pro? I am not sure if it's that, or my inexperience in laying out such lot of tracks that is causing me this log jam. It has been frustrating, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, Jim --
Thanks again for the note above. A month later, I have finally found some time to get back to my short film, trying to improve the mix in SoundtrackPro. I've been looking forward to this, because your advice seemed like a great idea. It seems obvious to me now that I should not have tried to mix my sound with my Final Cut Pro media on one drive and my STP file on another. However, I still can't get STP to work for me. Here is what I tried:
I copied all my FCP media (186 GB) from my my (232 GB) internal drive to my 500GB external drive, where I previously mixed the sound into a (62.5 MB) STP file. I then placed all my internal drive media in a new renamed folder, so STP would not get confused and go looking for it there. When I tried to open my STP file, I spent 20 minutes guiding it to find the migrated media in its new home on my 500GB external drive. I did this three times, and each time STP crashed just before it opened.
I don't have room on my internal drive to use STP to mix my FCP media there. I only have 41.GB available, which brings me back to my original problem of severe latency and dropping frames.
My last option, it seems to me, is to forget my old STP mix completely, start over on my external drive by opening my FCP source material there and use that to create a new STP file on the external drive, doing the entire mix all over from scratch. Do you think that could work, or is there some other basic workflow issue I am overlooking?
The good news is my short film has now been accepted into its first film festival -- I sent them a screener DVD made directly from FCP through Compressor. I guess I could lower my sights and use that for festival screening in a less-than-ideal mix. But that would be a shame because I put several hundred hours into Soundtrack Pro, but the levels are all over the place because I could not control the mix.
One thing I have learned: I have newfound respect for mixing and the sound editor's craft!

  • TS2510 problem with soundtrack pro v2.0.2 under snow leopard

Hi, I've just upgraded my mac book to snow leopard and now when I try to record something with soundtrack pro v2.0.2 through the line input jack, the internal microphone is still switched on and none of the preferences allow me to switch to the input jack,ks
Does anyone know whether STP v2.0.2 will run ok under snow leopard? If I need to upgrade the drivers, does anyone know where I can find these and how to instal them.
    Many thanks.

    There are no "drivers".
Use Audio MIDI Setup to set your audio input.
    Good luck.

  • Can't export audio from FCP to Soundtrack Pro

I'm running FCP 5.0.2 and have Soundtrack Pro 1.0. I'm trying to export audio tracks from a long FCP project I'm working on to ST Pro to clean them up. As shown in Apple's online demo videos, I want to export an audio track and then remove 'pops' and do noise reduction, etc. In FCP I right click the audio track I want and go down to 'Send To' but the option for "Soundtrack Pro Audio File Project" is grayed out and I can't click it.
If I unlink the tracks and then right click the audio track and 'Send To', the "Soundtrack Pro Audio File Project" isn't grayed out and looks like it would work. But that is only highlighting one audio track, not the other stereo track and not the video track. In the demo video all three were highlighted but when I relink all tracks and try to 'Send To' I get the grayed out "Soundtrack Pro Audio File Project" again.
Is there something I need to do or a step I'm missing.

You might be onto something Randy. I noticed in the Timeline if I tried to send an imported .AIF music clip to 'Soundtrack Pro Audio Project' it would allow it and the option wasn't grayed out. So I looked in my Browser window and checked out the file attributes to every clip which are listed to the right of the names. Sure enough, under the AUDIO column the .AIF music files are listed as '1 Stereo' and the rest of my captured video clips are listed in the AUDIO column as '2 Mono'.
So was there a setting for me to choose during Log and Capture that would have made them '1 Stereo' as opposed to '2 Mono'? Or is this a preference setting somewhere to change that for next time? They were recorded on my camera in stereo I'm pretty sure.
Now in terms of the massive project I've already captured and edited, should I be able to export these mono tracks individualy and fix them as needed? When I click the 'Send to' 'Soundtrack Pro Audio Project File' for these single mono tracks it asks me to 'Save' the file somewhere, is there a proper place to do this or just anywhere on the HD?
    Thanks

  • Missing audio when sending to Soundtrack Pro

I have a sequence that I'm sending to Soundtrack Pro. It sends and opens but I notice that there is audio missing from sections where I have .motn elements in my timeline. The audio is there in FCP...
Is there a solution to this?

Turns out the audio needed to be linked to the .motn sequence.

  • Missing Audio from FCP to Soundtrack Pro in Final Cut Studio 2

I've been trying to edit a sequence from Final Cut Pro 6 in Soundtrack 2 by sending the sequence to soundtrack as a multitrack project. For some reason, when I send it, multiple audio files from the original sequence are completely missing, and I have no clue why. They're .mov files from the original import of footage.
Anyone know why these don't transfer and how to fix it?

    Hi
I too have had trouble with Audio from FCP 6 messing up in STP 2. My opinion is that the process works if the audio tracks in FCP are either Mono sourced or stereo sourced and are never relinked, split to mono (in the case of stereo files) in FCP during editing. God forbid you unpair a stereo track and delete one channel!
Once in STP I have had occasions where non audio appears, the wrong track appears... or sometimes the wrong audio!
Once in a while double clicking on the offending clip in STP to open it in a Wave window seems to show the right audio. Either saving it of closing the window ( command/w) restores the right material to the clip in STP.
You could right click on the audio in FCP and "send to STP Audio Project". Hopefully the correct audio is opened in STP. Then save it. Now re-export the Multitrack project and see if the audio makes the trip.
Or, you could export the Audio directly from FCP, then import it into STP and position it against the video manually.
One warning : once things start going pear shaped in the FCP-STP workflow, it's my experience that I'm fighting problems all the way. It's why I don't use STP for FCP mixing .... I want to, but its too risky.
    I hope V3 is better.

  • Audio rendering problems in Premiere Pro CC 2014

    Hi
I'm rendering a very small project in Premiere Pro (just some cut and music). I tried to render it in H.264 but when I open it in windows media player there is no audio, when I copy it to my mobile phone I can't hear the audio neither. When I import the rendered file into premiere I can see the audio waveform. When I render the project in mpeg I can here the audio and when I clik the "match sequence settings" button I can hear it to (AVI) but I need H.264. What is the problem or what am I doing wrong.
    Thanks in Advance
    Michiel

Windows Media Player sucks.  That's about the best 'why' I have for that.
I don't own a smart phone, so I can't help with that one.  (I'm one of those old fashioned types who only uses a phone to make phone calls, and the proper tool for all the other activities the 'phone' has co-opted lately - like a computer for playing back computer media files. )

  • [PLEASE HELP!] .m4v and .mpeg4 Audio Export problems (QT 7 pro)

When i try to export any clips to .m4v (movie to ipod) or .mpeg4 the video is exported but has no sound. When i select "export to .mpeg4" and click on "options" it says "audio: no audio track in source movie". This is the same message displayed on all the clips i have tried to export.
Does anyone know how i can record the audio for .m4v files or .mpeg4 files?
Thankyou so much in advance for your help.

      Windows XP

I'm using Quicktime Pro v 7.0.4 on Mac. I tried exporting Quictime mpeg4 to iPod format and get only video but no audio! And I'm talking Apple all the way. These files were made from a Sony digital camera with the digital video record option.
Believe most (if not all) Sony digital cameras still use MPEG video format. As such, the files contain a "muxed" stream consisting of blocks of video data interspersed with blocks of audio data for A/V synchronization. As Kirk alluded to above, QT is a "frame-to-frame" sync application and does not fully support "muxed" (e.g., MPEG1, MPEG2, VOB, some AVI, MJPEG, etc.) formats.
I do use a 3rd party program called Snapz Pro X to capture to .mpeg4 and these files export just fine to iPod format!
Good solution for capturing streamed video but not the best here. As you suggested, use a third party, MPEG based application like iSquint (free) or, better yet, MPEG Streamclip (free) for one-step conversion with audio.
I tried to convert the mpeg4 format to MOV format and then convert MOV to m4v but no audio there.
No surprise here. If you check your first MPEG4 file you will see that no audio track was present following the initial conversion and no amount of further conversions will add a non-existent audio track.

  • Audio recording problem in premier pro cs4

The audio (voice using microphone) I have recorded using the sound mixer in premier pro plays back at a high speed for some reason. The voice sounds like "Alvin from the Chipmonks". Can anyone explain why this is happening?
    Joe

    Joe,
Unfortunately, you have posted to the Premiere forum. This was the precursor to PrPro. The MOD's will probably move this out to the PrPro forum, so more folk will see it and can respond.
Now, did you use a USB mic? Many have had issues with those.
Also, going back about a year, there was a similar thread, and the description was about the same - "chipmunk." I do not recall the flow of that thread, or the resolution, but will try to find it. I just hope that it was not before the forum changeover, as it is likely gone forever.
    Good luck,
