Audio set-up (speakers, etc.)

Hi.
I have crossed over from the PC side and still getting to know the system. My question is this: I had a Creative speakers system on my PC that I used for editing. it was a standard plug into the speaker jack. The Mac won't recognize it and Apple care says it is not compatible. Not sure I understand why since it is a basic line in plug. So...I spend some good money on this and the sound is superb. Is there any way (adapter, etc.) I can use ?? I can probably find a way to run it through my firewire deck using RCA but my deck is not on all the time and I will use the Mac for selecting music, reviewing compressed videos, dvds, etc. and don't want to fire up the deck every time i need to hear audio. Any suggestions would be very helpful.
thanks

Integral to the editing process is the ability to properly monitor your work, WHILE you're working - both audio and video. To accomplish that, you should use a properly calibrated external TV monitor and speakers**. Do NOT use speakers that are connected directly to your Mac.
If you're working with DV/DVCam/DVCPro (or any DV25 format), connect a qualified DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter) to your Mac via Firewire. Connect the analog outputs of the DV converter to your external TV monitor and speakers.
For speakers, most editors use nearfield monitors - speakers that are designed for recording and editing work so they don't artificially 'color' the sound. But in a pinch you can simply use the speakers built-in to the TV.
-DH
** = if you're editing content solely for CD-ROM or web delivery, using the computer speakers and monitor will suffice.

  • No audio output on speakers plugged into 3000 H210

I recently purchased a 3000 H210 57094408 running Vista home premium Service Pack 2 (all recent Vista updates have been installed).
With speakers plugged into the back output port, I was able to open Lenovo HD Audio Manager and obtain test tones in stereo through my speakers.  I couldn't, however, get audio from iTunes, YouTube, etc., nor could I get test sounds in Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Sound->Sounds.  In Control Panel->->Sound->Playback, I noticed that there were two speakers shown, one Realtek HD speaker that was "working" and the USB Audio CODEC speakers I'd plugged in, which were also "working" and demonstrating audio levels in the status bar to the right of the speaker icon (I was playing music in iTunes while checking the settings).  I made sure the cheapo speakers were selected as the default, but still no sound was coming out of said speakers -- the same speakers that had made the test sound noises in Lenovo HD Audio Manager.
I suspected the HD speakers (the nature of which I knew not) were interfering with my cheapo speakers, so I disabled them, and they no longer appear in the list of speakers.  Now Lenovo HD Audio Manager shows no speakers at all, and the test tone option isn't available to me in that application.  Control Panel->->Sound->Playback still shows my cheapo speakers, but they do not even register sounds from iTunes anymore.  Both speakers appear in Device Manager, but I have no idea what the Realtek speakers are supposed to be -- no speakers were included with the Lenovo box.  If they are necessary (i.e., not really speakers but the method by which the sound card communicates with the speakers), how do I get them back up and running?
Per the User Guide, I have reinstalled the driver for the audio card (Realtek audio ALC 888/662 VISTA driver), but that hasn't done anything.  I'm out of options at this point and would love any guidance!  Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Update (and a successful one, no less)!  After an extended remix call with Lenovo support, we uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for the Realtek controller (found in Device Manager under the sound controllers), which solved the problem.  Guess the controller driver had been corrupted, which is why it could work in the HD Audio Manager program but couldn't in the other applications.  Anyway, thought I'd post the solution in case anyone else has the no audio issue -- they can avoid some of my detours and missteps!

  • How does Core Audio set sample rate?

When I play a particular movie in QuickTime, the audio and video are out of sync. The movie plays fine on other computers.
This Mac Pro (OS 10.6.8) is used exclusively for Pro Tools and Final Cut Pro. The audio hardware is a Pro Tools HD Native card:
Native card --> Pro Tools Digital I/O boxes --> Lavry D/A converters --> monitors
The sample rate of the Digital I/O boxes is set by an external master clock, a Lavry Gold A/D converter.
I opened the DigiDesign Core Audio Manager and it says:
    Connected @ 44.1K, 32 In/32 Out, Buffer Size 512
Yet the movie is at 48K (I know because I created it in Final Cut Pro), and the external clock is set at 48K. So, I don't know where the 41K in the Digidesign Core Audio Manager came from. This is why I am guessing the problem is sample rate.
Please help me understand what sets the sample rate.
Does the application using Core Audio set it?
If so, how is this made consistent with the sample rate set for the hardware by the external master clock?
Do I have to be sure I always change the external clock setting to be consistent with the movie being played?
BTW, I have not had a sync problem when I play video in Final Cut Pro..........it is always in sync. So, I have never worried about how Core Audio works. The sync problem is only with QuickTime.

    Well, here is more information:
    - I reinstalled QuickTime 7 and did many other things (trashed preferences, etc)
    - I set the audio hardware (Pro Tools/HD Native card) to 48k
    - I checked the Digi CoreAudio Manager and it said "Connected at 44.1K", even though the hardware was set to 48K
    - I played the problem videos, and all are now in sync
    - I check the Digi CoreAudio Manager and it still says 44.1K
    - I checked the hardware and it is now set to 44.1K
I know that the videos are 48K, because I created them in Final Cut Pro X.
Does this mean that QuickTime 7 always converts videos to 44.1K, regardless of their sample rate?

  • Is it possible to stream music to multiple sets of speakers via airplay direct from iphone4s on ios7 in the same way that you can in iTunes

Is it possible to stream music to multiple sets of speakers via airplay direct from iphone4s on ios7 in the same way that you can in iTunes / Remote?
I know this can be achieved by the remote app.
Airplay functionality appears only to support 1 set of speakers at a time?

Does anyone know how or if it's possible to stream my music from the iPhone to iTunes via bluetooth or wifi? Essentially I want to share the iPhone's library with iTunes (I know one can go the other way).
Here's why: I'd like to stream my music at work to my computer's speakers without taking the phone out of my pocket. I obviously don't have my home music collection on my company computer. And I figure if I place the phone on my desk to plug it in and play through iTunes, I could easily walk off without the phone. That would be bad (out of contact) and potentially sad (stolen).
It seems right now the only bluetooth connection to a computer is for the remote application.
Wait until November. Airplay/Airtunes iOS 4.2 announced for iPhone to iTunes/iTV. If you want a BT audio stream now, you can add a dongle to the PC for headset streaming.
As far as WiFi file transfer iPhone to iTunes, you can't. There's talks on it but nothing concrete. Except JB.

  • 1 set of speakers for tv and streaming

I was going to buy an AppleTV and connect a set of external speakers to my tv, so any devices connected to the tv will use those speakers, but what if I want to stream audio from an ipod or macbook to those same speakers?
I could buy a A/V receiver that is Airplay compatible or ...?   Any other suggestions?

I'm still confused.  If the speakers in question are connected to the tv, then wouldn't the tv have to be powered on all the time even if those speakers are 'selected' by the Apple TV.  If so, I'd have to connect the speakers to an Airplay base station or Airplay express and link that with the Apple TV so I don't have to have the tv powered on when I just want to stream music from my macbook.
Does that make sense?  I don't want to buy 2 separate sets of speakers for 2 different tasks - i.e. 1 set connected to an Airplay express so I can listen to streaming music stored on my Macbook and another set of speakers connected to the optical audio output of my plasma tv when I want to watch a movie on my DVD player or Dish receiver.  That's why I thought the Apple TV would be able to do both.  I suppose it can, but it just means I'd have to keep my plasma tv on all the time, even when I'm listening to streaming music.  The only other set up I can think of is to buy a 1st gen. Apple TV and direct the output to the Airplay express speakers when I want to watch a movie on my DVD player.
I'm not sure if I'm making this too complicated.

  • Using multiple sets of speakers in stereo configuration (for movies)

I have hit a wall while trying to configure my stereo setup in my apartment. i'm trying to always take my stereo/audio setup to the full capabilities all the time, and i'm one small caveat away from making this idea work.  hopefully someone can help me figure out this workaround.
i have my mac mini 2011 desktop setup to the right of the doorway (audio goes out FW800 to a pro tools mbox and outputs to the speakers), and there's a home stereo receiver to the left. the receiver plays to those shelf speakers, as well as speakers around the corner in the kitchen. both systems work well independently of each other, and sound like sets of speakers when they play sounds.
current situation: i finally ordered the long 1/8" extension cable to plug my mac mini headphones port into the stereo receiver, connecting the two.  primarily so that i could switch outputs in system preferences and play tunes from my computer in the kitchen while cooking, but i learned about Aggregate devices and Multi-Output devices and i was able to use both systems at the same time, too.
but while i was ordering a 50' headphone cable extension, i got a long AC power cable and dvi as well so that the lady and i can put my monitor on the coffee table, connect it up, and sit on the couch to watch a movie with some popcorn n all that.  the lady is pleased with a movie and popcorn, but i am unhappy with the options for getting the movie to sound right. We're watching pretty much in the sweet spot between the two systems..  here's my options:
    1) __LR or LR__ - play the sound from either individual set of speakers.  lady is happy, i can't stand it.
    2) LRLR -  play each system in a stereo configuration, lady is still happy, but it's still phase inconsistent. i am unsatisfied.
3 LLRR - this is the holy grail.
inside of the Audio Midi Setup window, i created a multi-output device called FULL STEREO to use the mbox and the headphone output @ the same time, and tried to "configure speakers"
i want my mbox to play the right channel through both speakers, and the built in output to play the left channel on it's two speaks. but it's not an option.  check the error message.
I am hoping to not have to get out the soldering iron to make this work, but i am thinking i may need to get a small mixer and make some custom cables!  i wanted to come and ask for advice first.  can anyone help?

Do I need an AirPort to attach to each set of speakers that I want to connect, or is there another kind of receiver I can hook up to the speakers that do not have any kind of WiFi or Bluetooth configuration?
You basically have two choices: 1) Place an AirPort Express base station at each of the speaker locations, or 2) Use an AirPlay-Ready receiver that offers whole-home audio support. The latter would require that all speakers be connected back to the receiver.
Also, if I am planning to set up the airplay by using the extended network configuration, then the Wifi base station does not need to be an AirPort station? I have Fios and had trouble last time I tried to hook up an AirPort in place of the router that they provided.
The AirPlay networking protocol requires either a wireless or wired connection between the AirPlay server (typically iTunes) and the AirPlay speaker (AirPort Express, Apple TV, or an AirPlay-Ready receiver or speaker). AirPlay will traverse over an extended Wi-Fi network regardless of which manufacturer hardware is used.

  • 1 set of speakers and 1 set of headphones into a soundblast

Hope I'm posting on the right board. I've done a fair bit of trawling to try and find the answer to this question but so far, no success. I'm looking at buying either an audigy 2 ZS platinum or x-fi extreme music. The main thing that will be of use to me is to be able to plug in a set of speakers and a pair of headphones at the same time - but (and forgive me if I use the wrong technical terms) I think I need the speakers to play one channel and the headphones another. i.e. I want to be able to hear 2 different things. It's essentially to use with some virtual dj software. Due to my lack of technical knowledge, I'm unclear as to whether I can do this. Any advice gladly accepted. Finally, as if all that wasn't enough, if anyone has any views on which of those two cards is the best for music that would be welcomed too. Thanks?FS

X-Fi for music, games and etc. However, I don't understand what you wanted to do, by channels? you mean one channel for headphones and one channel for speakers? You can certainly listen to headphones or speakers with any soundcards.

  • MacBook Pro: No Audio from Internal Speakers - Solution

Issue: (MacBook Pro late 2010) Absolutely no audio to internal speakers after OSX has booted up.
Digital Out is the only available output device shown within System Settings
    Analog headphones work
    Digital Out works
Bootup "BONG" works (and is of course now perma loud after PRAM reset... uggh)
Things I have tried from least drastic to greatest in the following order:
    sudo killall coreaudiod
    Clear PRAM
Using Deploy Studio (first performing DiskUtility format as well):
re-image MacBook with a the same original OSX Lion image it has been working with for the past 3 months
re-image MacBook with previous Snow Leopard image (obviously used to work)
Not using Deploy Studio (but first performing DiskUtility format, using original supported installation media: DVD, Apple Store):
Installed Snow Leopard (no audio), then upgraded to Lion through Apple Store (still no audio)
Installed Snow Leopard using installation DVD provided with MacBook Pro (< waste of time as the above step didn't work either, but including here for completeness)Note: Even the "Welcome to Mac" intro movie is silent, audio controls are crossed out
Gentoo Live DVD _works_ (after enabling Front Speakers using alsamixer other wise it was also muted and no audio would work except through head phones)
Well holly $%#$%,  %^#&^. After performing step 5, and enabling Front Speakers using alsamixer, I now have audio in OSX Lion
I believe this happened after I used the Mini Stereo jack for Head Phone use.
How in the ______ did this happen? And why did it take a third party software to _somehow_ enable audio to the internal speaker _after_ OSX Lion completely booted?????
Note to all: You can probably use a Ubuntu Live CD to perform step 5. Or any live cd that loads up Intel Audio drivers.

I appreciate your response. I still have concerns:
The red-lite is off when my issue is happening.
The red-lite is on when my issue is happening.
It was not consistent. My concern is the Macintosh operating system not detecting the change. My other concern is it can _not_ be only a hardware switching issue, as Alsamixer, a software program, can make the switch toggle between off or on. If it was a hardware-only issue, Alsamixer would be a fail. And, if it is actually a hardware-only issue triggering a software 1 or 0 switch somewhere:
My final concern is 'where is this setting being stored' as clearning PRAM and reinstalling entire operating system after opertating system (Leopard to Lion and back to Leopard) after a disk wipe has no effect.
I guess it sounds to me, that OSX tries to be too user-friendly by not allowing peeps to change those options themselves. Is there a dscl command switch I can use to manually override such an effect? (Just in case I don't happen to have anything to stick into the mini-jack port)
Regardless, your answer is correct. Thank you both (Ciao and Allan Jones)

  • 3 set of speakers

I have a bit of a strange one I think.
I have a set of speakers set up in our bathroom, hard wired
Another set in the living room wireless. And I want to set up a third in

    iBook12" G4, 'Minimac superdrive G4, intel iMac 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   all have 1 gig ram

Theoretically yes this should work. iTunes supports playing audio through multiple AX's simultaneously. However, you might run in to problems...
I tried the same thing with a Linksys as my main router and I couldn't make the connection to my AX. The difference is that when streaming to multiple AXs, iTunes sets up UDP connections verses a TCP connection when streaming to only one. For some reason my Linksys was not able to maintain that connection with the AX. I ended up have to get an AEBS as my main router. It probably would have worked if I swapped out the Linksys for another AX.
The best thing you can do is test it out and see if it works with your model of 3com. If you only have 1 AX right now, you can test it by using your iMac and the AX as the multiple speakers. The result should be the same with multiple AXs.
    Good luck!

  • Sound from tv playing thru 2 separate sets of speakers not @ the same time

    Hi all,
I have my tv connected to my TV via the 3 component leads for the video and an optical lead for the sound. This works well as my TV has built in sub and surround sound processor plus 5 remote speakers so the 5.1 for films works well. But as the speakers are not that good, and certainly not Hi-fi quality listening to music thru them isn't that rewarding in fact its horrible. There is a spare set of audio out connectors (Analog RCA stereo audio) on the tv that would connect to the audio in on my hi-fi amplifier. I haven't tried it yet as i don't want to damage anything but i imagine doing this mean that sound will come out of all 7 speakers at the same time, with either films or stereo music.
Is there a way i can switch between the two sets of speakers (without un-plugging stuff) so i can listen to music on my quality speakers that are positioned correctly for stereo and then switch to the cheap ones that came with the TV that are positioned for 5.1 so i can watch a film.???

the appletv has no option to switch between different outputs.
Thankfully...nothing more irritating than having to drill down menus to turn sound outputs on/off.
would it not be simpler to use your amp to switch?
    Absolutely
Turn amp off/down when not neeeded, and turn volume of TV speakers down when not needed.
OP might like the sound of the 7 speakers on for films, but it there's any sync issues it would probably detract.

I had my iPhone4s set up at the phone store (2 days ago) and It receives gmail, my contacts and calender entries, the weather, etc. I installed the "Find iPhone" app from iTunes on the iPhone4s, synched to iTunes, even reset the phone, but the only device that gets located is my Macbook Pro. I can send a "sound" message to my Mac (and the Mac recieves it) but unable to see the iPhone4s from my Mac, let alone send any message. • FCP 7.0.3 Easy Setup audio setting issues

I have created two custom Easy Setups.
    SD:     DVCPro50 PAL with audio set @ 48.000 kHz, 16-bit, 16 chan
    HD:     DVCProHD 1080i 25fps with audio set @ 48.000kHz, 24-bit, 16 chan
I open FCP, load the SD easy setup.  I then click on Audio/Video settings.
Select "Audio/Video Settings" and view "Capture Presets Summary"
         - Audio format is listed as 48.000 kHz 16-bit 16-chan
Select"Edit" and "Capture Preset Editor" comes up.
         - UnderQuicktime Audio Settings:
              - Device:  AJA Kona 3
              - Format:  48.000 kHz 16-bit 16-chan
If I then select the HD Easy Setup, and then "Audio/Video Settings"
Select"Edit" and "Capture Preset Editor" comes up.
         - UnderQuicktime Audio Settings:
              - Device:  AJA Kona 3
              - Format:  48.000 kHz 16-bit 16-chan (THIS SHOULD BE 24-bit)
    Select the "A\V Device" tab:
The audio device has defaulted to the 16 bit setting as well.
It appears that FCP or AJA is keeping the audio bitrate from the previous Easy Setup.
Even if we close FCP completely, and reopen into a new project, load the HD Easy Setup, the bit rate still shows as 16.

What settings should i be using in FCP to capture the video? From attempted research i found most comments suggesting to use a basic Firewire settings. i have used this in PAL format but the results are poor.
One thing I am confused about is the 32khz or 48khz settings. Which should i be using? I have an older version of FCE 4 where there are many settings for both 32khz and 48khz for DV FireWire but in FCP7 there are only options for 48khz.
Any advice would be welcomed at the moment.
I am also willing to upload clips of what I have to demonstrate visually the poor quality video I am capturing from the Canon

  • Which Audio Setting for MPEG share for use on PC or burning to DVD???

I just "shared" a movie (a slide and video show with soundtrack edited on Premier Elements 8)  to "Use for playback on this PC or burning to DVD"  (created an MPEG).  The audio export didn't work though.  I used the NTSC DVD Standard preset that gives the 192 kbps, 48 kHz, Dolby Digital audio setting.  Is this the setting I should use, or is there another audio setting that would work?  There is just silence on the end product.  Thanks for any help.

Now, are you burning to a DVD-data, or to a DVD-Video?
If the latter, then you can either Burn to Disc from PrE, or can Burn to Folder, and then use Roxio, Nero, or the great, free burning utility, ImgBurn to do the physical Burn.
Some time back, WMP had the DVD playability disabled for all burned DVD-Videos. Not sure if MS has added that back in. To the best of my knowledge, WMP has no burning capabilities in it, but could be wrong with the newest versions.
Hope someone else has ideas, and a better knowledge of most recent versions of WMP.
