Audio stutter after 10.7.2 upgrade

I've just upgraded my Mac Mini 2010 from Lion 10.7.1 to 10.7.2. Never have had any problems with audio and/or video. For some reason when I now play audio (in iTunes, VLC or whatever player from music or video file) or even listen to the OS animated sounds, the Sound stutters (so bad you can't really hear anything). What is going wrong?
My Mac Mini has always been connected via HDMI to a Samung HT and from there on to a Samsung TV. No change in configuration besides software upgrade!?
Running Windows in Bootcamp, audio works fine, so it is definitely new OS related!?

Check to see if the settings in Midi Audio Setup have changed.
I have updated my 2010 and haven't had any issues.  However,
my set up is different as my Mini goes to a receiver and then
the receiver routes video to TV.
Have you tried a PRAM reset?  May or may not help.  I am
seeing in the 10.7 forum some other threads where peoples
HDMI audio has been borked.
If you you have a Time Machine backup or clone, you could
roll back to before the update.

  • Audio Drops after 6.0.5 Upgrade

I've been setting up a 3-node AirTunes network, and after it was all done I decided to upgrade from iTunes 4.7 to 6.0.5.
This completely trashed my streaming to remote speakers - I got frequent audio drops that make the music unlistenable.
So, sez I, "it's time for the Graphite ABS to go - let's go all 802.11g finally. And, just to be sure, let's get an external antenna".
So, I bought an Airport Extreme Base station and antenna.
Now, the problem is worse than ever.
I used to listen happily to music over AirTunes from iTunes 4.7. No drops.
Now, it doesn't work at all.
    Any thoughts?

Are you sure it is an Airport issue rather than iTunes truncating your music files?
Songs that used to play through to the end are now stopping after an indeterminate length of time (different for each song file, though AAC ITMS downloads seem to play without a hitch) for me.
I have tried many things to cure my problem but do not have a fix yet.
Or do your songs play as they should within iTunes but only cause you problems within the AirTunes set up. Ignore AirTunes for now and just concentrate on iTunes to determine if the fault lies within this application rather than your wireless set up.

  • Core audio stutter after user migration (with system settings)

my girlfriends mbp recently fried its logicboard. Shes got a new 13" now, but migrated her user to my mbp in the while waiting. She also imported the system settings (machine name was changed) and since then my core audio is messed up. I use a Tascam US-122, Motu 828MK2 and Digi 003 and at the moment only the Motu and built-in audio drivers work normally. The other two stutter. Re-installing drivers for the devices did not help.
Any advice on what to trash or should i try to install 10.6 on top of this again?
This is a 3 month old install and i'm not keen on doing it again.

  • Mavericks, Safari & audio stutter after clean install

So I've had the audio stuttering problem too since Mavericks.
I just did a clean install on my MBP 15" 2010, specifically to test this theory about Plug-in nonsense.
Fresh install 10.9.1, NO plug-ins added, infact no software added after install. Just stock Apple stuff from installer.
Audio from YouTube & SoundCloud is atrocious in Safari.
Installed FireFox 26, tested, audio was fine.
Then I used the 10.9.2 update which says it addresses the issue, and no improvment either with Safari.
    FireFox still fine.
This is an Apple problem and it is a really bothersome one too.
    Apple, please fix this ASAP.

By "clean install" do you mean you erased the startup partition, reinstalled 10.9.2 (using recovery mode or something else?), & did not migrate anything from a backup after that? If not, it is possible (even likely) that you still have third party additions on your system.
To make sure there is nothing like this going on, please download Etrecheck, run it, & post the results. It is a tiny utility written by forum regular etresoft & displays a lot of diagnostic info that can help troubleshoot issues like this. Before posting, make sure no personal info appears anywhere in the report -- the app is designed to redact things like your account names but there is tiny a chance that some non-standard naming convention won't be detected.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Audio issue after upgrade to Mountain Lion

Got my new MacBook Pro with Retina display just over a week ago now and was working brilliantly up until last night.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion via the App store as I already bought it for my other macs and didnt wish to wait to redeem my free copy.
Ever since the update the audio develops a stutter on any audio file no matter what format, program used or at any volume.
I am hoping this is just a software isssue and can be easily rectified. I have restarted it, tried a different user and pretty much anything else I could think of before posting this.
Any help would be greatly recieved.
    Thanks
    Luke

Using gfxCardStatus to force discrete graphics stops the audio stutter on my machine.  I already returned one retina mbp for three dead pixels... Strange that graphics switching has something to do with the audio, especially since it was stuttering every 15 seconds or so, not when the nvidia kicked in...

  • Audio issues after upgrading to OS X 10.10 (Yosemite)

    Hello,
I have been facing audio issues after upgrading to OS X 10.10
    - No sound in VLC
    - Re-booting with Option-Command-P-R did not work
    - System sounds are fine
    - Quicktime Player works just fine
    I tried:
    - Plugging in earphones while video was playing on VLC
    - F10/F11/F12 while video was playing on VLC
    - Re-boot with Option-Command-P-R keys (found on a thread elsewhere)
    - Played something in Garage Band (found on a thread elsewhere) and restarted VLC
None of the above solved the issue
Any one else facing similar issue with VLC on 10.10?
How did you manage to fix this?
I am running VLC 2.1.5 btw.
    Thanks in advance!

Shockwave says at the present moment not to be compatible with OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
Youtube, QuickTime, all play with no sound at all.

My dv7 has a very bad warble in the audio after a recent automatic upgrade.  I have tried to revert the audio drivers back to a previous version but that has not helped.

    Hi Mikehow,
May I please you to write which dv7 you exactly own (e.g. a dv7-6190)? You could also post your P/N (not the S/N, please) here.
    This would really help!

  • Leopard and Audio Stutter Requiring Restart

Ever since installing Leopard, there will be some random event that causes audio to start stuttering and the only way to stop it is to restart the computer. I use Guitar Rig 2 very heavily but it isn't just the tracks with GR2 active that stutter. Once it goes, it's all the way gone and affects all audio. I normally use headphones and can sometimes go two hours before it fails but it doesn't seem to survive more than five or ten minutes when I'm using the monitors hanging from the audio interface. That kind of points to Presonus incompatibility but the best course of action is not at all clear. Any help would be appreciated as a back-out would be next to impossible.

I finally have a chance to get back and check Q&As/Posts. I actually solved my stuttering, indirectly thru another issue. During the 10.4 OS update, my dock (in Leopard screen) dissappeared. In the attempts to recover it, I fell back on my PC way of thinking and decided to re-install the 10.4 update, and wa-lah, the dock was back, and the stutter stopped and has not returned to this day. It appears the updates could have something to do with it, in addition to, things like a cell phone near by, frequency interference from other electronics, etc. However, I still think it's often an update related matter.
Here's a discussion on the issue, and also do a search in support with "Macbook audio stutter" and do the search for the last 90 days. The search will yield some good discussions, even more relevant ones the last 30 days, one person noting stuttering started after their upgrade to 10.5
    Hope this helps.

  • USB Audio Distortion After 10.4.6 Update

Have been using an Edirol UA-1D USB/Digital Audio interface with my Pismo for years. Optical connection for audio out to digital 8 track unit. Crystal clear signal. Painless operation. And NO drivers needed.
Updated from 10.4.5 to .6, and instantly I'm hearing a considerable and disturbing amount of distortion in the audio. It's not volume dependent or overmodulation (comes through even at low input levels). And it comes through iTunes, Reason, LIVE, etc... where it didn't before.
Since the Edirol unit uses built-in Core Audio, I'm baffled. I know Apple has been endlessly tweaking its OSX USB/Digital audio underpinnings, but I fear this latest tweak has knocked something out of alignment.
    Any suggestions?
I zapped PRAM, "repaired" permissions, etc. No luck yet.
    Would appreciate any insight.
    Thanks in advance.
    B&W w/G4600 - Pismo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have been having similar problems with my (much less fancy) USB speakers, intermittently, since the 10.4.6 update (PowerBook). From another post I made elsewhere:
I have Altec-Lansing XT1 USB speakers. They're connected to the PowerBook via a USB KVM, to an ADC, to the speakers.
For the last week or so (it started soon after 10.4.6 upgrade), an odd temporary sound distortion has been occurring. As the original poster mentioned, it sounds for the life of me as if the speakers are blown.
For anywhere from a few moments (several seconds) or longer, the sound output will become distorted in this way. Then, often of its own accord, things will go back to normal. If I want to get them back to normal more quickly, I can mute and unmute (I use a Logitech keyboard with a mute button, or sometimes I hit the Griffin Powermate which defaults to mute, and occasionally I even hit the sound control on the menu bar). When it's unmuted, it comes back undistorted.
Hence, this phenomenon seems to me to likely be software-related.
I almost always use the PowerBook closed and hooked up to an ACD. Lest you think this is particular to this set up: I have another identical ACD & speakers at the office (indeed, even the same keyboard), with the main difference being the lack of the USB KVM switch being left out. The problem happens there as well.
    I welcome any thoughts.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • Slight audio stutter in IDVD 6 when played on TV

I am new to IDVD, but the program seems pretty good. The only issue I am having is slight audio stutter throughout the slideshow on the burned DVD when played on a TV. I tried multiple TVs and they all had the same hiccup occur and at the same spot. The slideshow plays great in IDVD without any hiccups or hesitation. Also, the audio file is being imported from itunes and I have listened to it several times to rule out a bad song file. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Aparently, I am just going to create my own thread documenting my frustration on this journey
    You learn more that way.
According to their documentation, this is actually a DVD player issue and not an encoding issue. Ok??? Then, how come other programs are able to seemlessly play over 99 slides without the hiccup?
Slideshow audio playback drops out after 99 images at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302962 explains things.
DVD slideshows with more than 99 images are a recent 'hack' created by Apple. Images in such a slideshow are treated as Chapters and DVDs are limited to 99 Chapters per Track. When you use more than 99 images, your DVD player must jump to a new track for the 100th image. Some players can do this with no problem, others have a hiccup in the audio, and still others reset eveything.
The ONLY sure way of creating a slideshow with audio and more than 99 slides is to create one as a movie in iPhoto or iMove.
Sorry, but that's the way things work.

  • Mouse and Audio stutter/freezes with Intel ICH9R AHCI drivers

edit: Initially (in original post) I suspected the random mouse and audio stutter/freezes were from a driver update. However between a reboot during these updates I had disconnected an eSATA cable from a drive that was not powered. It turns out the ICH9R when running in AHCI or RAID mode with appropriate drivers installed has problems with some HDDs when the drive isn't powered but the SATA data cable is connected. This is quite normal in SATA enclosures which I have plenty.
What makes this more puzzling is that the stutter/freezes are very tiny and hard to notice IF you don't have any PCI cards connected. With a Intel 100 Mbit PCI NIC connected these stutters became real blocking issue that would have prompted me to return this Gigabyte G33 motherboard (Also affects P35) to the shop had I noticed this issue sooner. I'm not yet sure whether this stutter w/ AHCI/RAID issue affects only the Gigabyte boards but what is certain is that it does affect these in quantity based on how there's others reporting the exact same issue if googling around.

This issue has been confirmed not to be limited to just my system.

Same problem here, it's not limited to Vista, also happens on XP/2003 both 32/64 bit. I'm 99% sure it's to do with the Intel AHCI/Matrix storage driver. It'd be interesting to know what your motherboard brand/model is. Mine is Gigabyte DS2R and I've seen reports of this issue on other forums as well. I'm using the integrated Intel graphics and every component is Intel except Audio Realtek and Network Broadcom. The issue goes away by disabling AHCI/RAID but you lose hot-swap of SATA drives and NCQ.
The primary indicator for this issue is that if any of the SATA ports has a drive that is plugged in but not powered up (and not powered down by the AHCI driver programmatically) then you get this global stutter/studder/hickups/choppy. In audio it sounds like tiny repeats. How bad it is seems to depend on what drive brand is plugged in etc so on some combinations it's very tiny and doesn't happen that often, on other drives it's more constant and easy to detect.
    I'd suggest you report at:

    Chipsets/Chipset software/Matrix storage Technology
btw. My AHCI BIOS/OROM version that is shown on boot with AHCI/RAID enabled is iSRC 1.07 08042006, what's yours?

Though most posts in this thread involve laptops and many of them attempt to isolate the problem in wireless network adapters, let me assure you the same problem can show up in a desktop with wired-ethernet-only. (Admittedly, it's a Realtek onboard gigabit LAN, and Realtek has been fingered by a number of you for its drivers, at least its audio drivers.)
On a brand new core2-quad P35 chipset machine with 4GB ddrII, with a completely clean install of Vista 32 business, I have been suffering intermittent global stuttering. It affects not only audio (of any sort, through any player, whether or not dsp-enhanced) but also video (you can see it in screen saver motion, for instance) and even cursor or mouse movement (hit and hold the spacebar in a text editor and watch the stuttering fun begin!). It's intermittent but not random; that is, it can disappear for a while after I apply one of my stab-in-the-dark fixes (read on) but can come back and then generally remains until I re-apply a fix. It's been like this since about day 1. Well, maybe day 2 or 3.
I've seen so many variants of this problem posted in so many forums, with so many theories, that I could spend the next three months doing nothing but troubleshooting it, assuming I had the budget and time to try endless substitute components or re-builds from scratch, but there's no assurance any or all of that would actually fix it. I do have the Intel Storage Matrix AHCI drivers pre-installed, and Intel itself vaguely alludes to possible 'degraded performance in Vista' with regard to those drivers--is this what they're talking about? They don't say. I do have an Nvidia 8800gts, and Nvidia forums are full of complaints about unacceptable issues with their video drivers, but again it's vague, no smoking gun for global stuttering. I have tried THREE different audio configurations--the onboard realtek hi-def; an x-fi elite; and a c-media based Omega Claro card. I have the problem with all of them. Discovering how musical the c-media card is was a happy accidental side effect of this miserable odyssey, but it really just makes it more frustrating, since I now want to listen to music more than ever but can't find a permanent solution to this vexing problem.
One of the weirdest symptoms is that the stuttering can re-appear (if it has been gone for a few days) just by connecting an external SATA drive, even if the drive is not turned on! Equally weird: simply going into the BIOS and just looking, changing nothing, exiting without saving, can cause it to reappear upon re-boot!
And to ice this cake of weirdness, here are some things that can make it go away (sometimes, at least for a while): removing the external SATA drive and rebooting; removing and re-seating the cards on the motherboard; and clearing the BIOS (jumper or pull out the battery) and then re-entering all the same settings as were there already.
The symptoms are driving me nuts, as audio is one of my main uses for a computer, but it's the HUH? quality of these various actions that can seem to make the problem disappear or re-appear that are really threatening my sanity. If anybody can sift a better clue out of these ashes of frustration than I can, I wish you would post it.

  • Cannot deselect 'safe mode' in Quicktime, audio stutter + other errors

So everyone's got a problem with itunes 7 in one way or another. Most popular is the error about audio stutter whilst playing back in itunes. For those of you who havent tried deselecting 'safe mode' in Quicktime, do it now, coz it should work.
But it doesn't for me. I deselect, then apply, then run itunes, still getting the stutter. I then check the setting again in quicktime to find that the safe mode option has magically selected itself again. aarrgh!
To add to this i regulalry get the error message; 'an error occured while updating the defualt player for audio file types, you do not have enough access priviledges for this operation.'
i have made sure i am logged in as administrator, i have slected the options under 'set program access and defaults,' i have reinstalled itunes and quicktime several times. I have disabled my firewall and followed just about every piece of advice available on these pages. Does anyone have any fresh ideas?
    SORT IT OUT APPLE!!!!

Same here guys:>) The interesting thing is that iTunes 7 works flawlessly in my other machines running Windows 2000 professional and Windows XP professional. The computer I'm having no luck with is a Windows XP Home addition with Service Pack 2. Of course everything worked fine with the previous versions of iTunes. Another difference may be that the computer in question also has a PCI audio card, an RME DIGI96PAD. I have upgraded the driver, upgraded direct X but with no avail. Apple, WHERE ARE YOU? I can't listen to my music! This will reflect on your stock price you know?
