Audio stuttering/ skipping in iTunes 10.1.1.4

Updated the software, now audio is skipping ONLY when played through iTunes. Tried all the suggested fixes, uninstalled iT and qT twice and reinstalled, still have the problem. Anyone run into the same problem or have a potential solution?
Thanks! Oh, running WinXP sp3

Hi,
I have a similar problem with music files 'stuttering' or 'jittering' and it's particularly noticeable during quieter tracks. Almost sounds like crackles or pops in the background.
The interesting thing is that I played the same problematic files on the same machine using Windows Media Player and they were rock steady perfect!? Suggests to me an issue with the iTunes software. I was similarly tempted to reinstall iTunes and the audio drivers, but I see this didn't help another friend here with the same problem.
Th eproblem has come about since I transferred all music to my new computer running Windows 7 64 bit and wonder if there is an issue with the latest iTunes 64 bit version software??
Any thoughts/advice please? Regards.

  • Audio playback stuttering/skipping randomly itunes 10.1 mac 10.6.5

Having issues with playback on my mac since installing 10.1.
It seems to glitch a track randomly and skips a second of song or something.
7% of my CPU is in use and ive got nearly 4gig of ram free. itunes library is about 32 gig bit its never been an issue before.
Is this a known issue in 10.1 itunes?

the forums are full of discussions about this issue.today i suddenly had the same problem.stuttering music.i tried the following to solve the problem, and so far it seems to work for me:throw out all the music from your itunes player, but keep the files in the library.re-import the music you want to listen to from the library now,and see if it solves the problem for you, too.

  • Audio stuttering in Yosemite iTunes, Mavericks OK

Ever since installing Yosemite, I've noticed a quite annoying problem: stuttering audio. I listen to music a lot and so iTunes has been the app that shows the problem the most. However, it's not as clear-cut as just playing audio on iTunes.
I've been trying experiments over the last few weeks. I've used tools like top and Activity Monitor, trying to determine if something is taxing the CPU for a split-second or not. Unfortunately, I found no concrete evidence of this. It's random, and it's annoying.
I've also quit all apps that could be causing it like Safari. The audio still stutters.
Symptoms: music played on iTunes will randomly stutter for a fraction of a second. Like a hiccup.
    Tests:
iTunes with low-quality audio (64kps). Happens sporadically.
iTunes with high-quality audio (24/192, 24/96). Still happens sporadically, but no differently than low-quality audio. I thought maybe higher quality audio was taxing the system.
Music is on an external thunderbolt My Book from Western Digital.
Movies streamed from the same Thunderbolt drive do not have issues.
Music played using Quicktime from the same Thunderbolt drive does not have issues.
Music played using VLC from the same Thunderbold drive has issues, but not as often as playing through iTunes.
Movies and music streamed to my AppleTV do not have problems when played from the same Thunderbolt drive.
YouTube is OK. No stuttering at all.
So, something seems to be happening with iTunes on Yosemite, and sometimes VLC.
As a developer, I have a small partition for OS testing. I put Mavericks on there and copied some albums with high and low quality audio. Not a single stutter. Not one.
So the problem has to be Yosemite. It's obviously the same computer (mid-2011 iMac, 20GB RAM, 3.7 GHz i7).
I have no clue how to solve this problem. At first I thought it was some kind of Thunderbolt issue, but even with the Thunderbolt update it still happens, and doesn't happen at all with Quicktime.
The only wildcard is the strange stuttering I get with VLC but I'm wondering if it's a red herring.
So is it iTunes, or is there something wrong with the Yosemite sound system?
What can I do to check something like this?

    Linc,
I had not mentioned I already tried that, but when I tested it a few days ago, nothing came up in Console.
Just now, I tested it again. It looks like some kind of problem between the Alesis Multimix 8 driver and Safari, but when I quit Safari a few weeks ago the problem still occurred. I just tried it now and it didn't happen. I did upgrade the Alesis driver a while ago and I don't remember if I tried the Safari test before or after that.
Regardless, here's the dump. This does NOT happen every time there's a skip. In fact, nothing shows up in the log when there's a skip, but the dump below does show up when Safari is running.

  • ITunes playback stutters/skips

I have the latest version of iTunes (7.6.1) and when I playback music from the hard drive or web radio it randomly stutters/skips every so often. The music on my iPod and iPhone plays just fine. Any thoughts on why this might be?

This is a widespread issue, search the boards for "stutter" .... there must several hundred people posting on these forums with the same issue.
I have my 300GB + iTunes library on an external WD My Book Pro (a 2TB version set up as a 1TB RAID mirror) connected via FW800. I solved my stuttering playback problem by transferring my library to another external FW800 drive with two Seagate 200GB drives configured as a RAID stripe.
It would be interesting to get some stats on how many people have their iTunes library on external or network drives and what vendors the drives are manufactured by.
Post your iTunes config details here, even if you dont have the problem.

  • ONline Video Stutters/Skips [other programs affected]

HI. ive been having this problem for quite some time now; everytime i watch videos online, the video stutters and or skips. i tried everything, fixed my internet connection, wait for the video to load completely, but the problem is still there. these past few days when it starts stuttering/skipping my other programs do the same thing too.
like for example if i was on itunes i cant access it since the cursor wont even move, and if im on imovie playing a video or something, it stutters as well. i have a feeling it's not just about my safari, it's about my mac in general [i hope not]
ive updated all my flash, safari, EVERYTHING. still the prob persists. i cant watch vids online at all!
    pleasseee helllppp meee!!!!
[ps: i sing on youtube, and i use youtube instrumentals as music, and i cant really do that with stutering audio in the background.LOL. just sharin' how important this is to me! hahah]

You don't really give us enough to go on, so I'm not going to swear to this, but sometimes you see this kind of thing with a dying hard-drive, or filesystem corruption. Make a backup of any important data NOW to be on the safe side.

  • Audio stutters in slideshow

    Hello All,
I am a newbie with encore, trying to put together a slideshow with audio and subtitles. I used VBR mp3 encoded using iTunes. I rendered this slideshow and checked the preview to find that the audio stutters.
Any idea if encore doesn't like VBR mp3?
BTW, I will be glad if someone could explain what encore did by 'rendering'?
    Thanks

In fact, I have most of the collection in VBR mp3 format only but I can still make AIFF files out of the CDs those are with me (and most of the collection is back home with parents)
Is there any way around to work with mp3 files like exporting to wav and using them etc? I am sure there will be a quality loss but is such thing possible?

  • Movie audio stuttering

Since ITUNES last software update, Quicktime Movies (taken from my didital camera) which I convert to play on my ipod, play with the audio "stuttering". It is not an ipod problem, since the converted file stutters even when I play it back on my PC. I have some Quicktime files which I had conerted BEFORE the last update, and, they still play OK. However, If I convert them again with the latest software, the resulting file will stutter on playback.
I do see that the older converted files have a "BIT RATE" of 128 kbps while the most recently convert files have a bit rate of 94 kbps. This may be the problem....does anyone know how to set the bite rate for file conversion in Quick Time??

It is my experience that the DVD will also have the audio stuttering. I've had several projects with the same issue. It's frustrating. There is a thread that addresses the audio stutterning problem. I was not able to work around the problem on a video that I created. I will enclose the link:

  • I have just put an audio book into my iTunes music library.  When I tried to transfer it to my iPod shuffle it rearranged the tracks so that they are in the wrong order.  How can I put them in the order they appear in the book?

I have just put an audio book into my iTunes music library.  When I tried to transfer it to my iPod Shuffle it put the chapters in the wrong order i.e. Chap 1, Chap 10, Chap 11 etc. rather than Chap 1, Chap 2, Chap 3 ...  How can I get it to put them in the order they appear in the book?

First, we need to know if the audiobook chapters are being treated by iTunes as music files or as audiobooks. If they are not audiobooks purchased from the iTunes store, they might be getting "shuffled". You will need to look at "File" - "Properties" (I think - I don't use iTunes under Windows - or right-click on the file and choose "properties") and look at the media type. If it is "Music", change it to "Audiobook". If this is not the problem, or does not fix anything, please post back.
Actually, looking at your post again, a second thought occurs to me - assuming there are less than 100 chapters in the book, just renaming them with a leading zero on the first nine chapters might do it. A computer will alphabetically sort filenames in the order you quote (1, 10, 11, 12, 13, ... 2, 21, etc.) but a leading zero will fix that (01, 02, 03 ... 10, 11, 12)

    Micky,
The iTunes Store sells songs in AAC format.  Most Android phones can play AACs.  Just sync them to your phone per the instructions with the phone.
If by any chance your phone does require MP3 format, you can use iTunes to convert the files, per this guide:
iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format - Apple Support
(This conversion does not require burning.)
For future reference, note that the iTunes Store is really optimized for people using Apple devices.  You might find it more convenient to buy music in Mp3 format from Amazon Digital Music or Google Play Music.

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • DPC latency + audio/mouse skip and stutter on t420s

    Hello fellow thinkpad owners,
I have a new t420s (41717FU) core i7, 8GB RAM, and NVS 4200M discrete, win 7 64-bit pro.  I use the minidock with 2 external 28" displays on DVI out.
I discovered major issues with latency with this machine; very noticeable loss of control for about half a second, plus annoying audio stutter, especially concurrent with network activity. This is quite frustrating, especially for a machine that is supposed to be high end core i7 with discrete graphics. I had a t410s previously and also had latency problems, and I know this is a real problem with several different models (just search 'annoying audio') on the forums.
I have used dpc latency checker as well as latency mon and narrowed the probable culprit to the network drivers associated with the gigabit ethernet.  It took me a while to discover the relationship to the Intel 82579LM, since LatencyMon will identify the problem with NDIS.sys or NETIO.sys, giving sporadic latencies over 20000 microsecs, which made me think it was a Win 7 tcp stack issue or maybe some internal windows firewall blocking.  During these spikes, the audio stutters, the mouse won't move, everything on the system just stalls for a split second.  Temps on CPU seem within normal limits at about 70-80C.  I've read everything I could find about this issue, including problems with NVIDIA drivers, ACPI, firewall/antivirus, etc etc, and tried most of those suggestions.
I spent a long time doing all kinds of testing, putting the machine on AC power and max performance, shut down various devices, disabled any component power-off states, disabled NVIDIA and displays, changed bios settings etc.
After all of this, I *know* my issue is related to the Intel Ethernet component, because if I disable it and use wireless connectivity (or no network at all) the problem simply goes away.  Surprisingly, the wireless Centrino adapter, though slower, functions without any problem affecting DPC latency and I have no stutter with that (many have previously identified the wireless adapter being a problem especially related to power mgt).
Unfortunately, I require an ethernet connection.  So just disabling that adapter is not an option.  Here is what I've done to workaround the issue, though I wish it would be fixed for good with some kind of update from Lenovo, though I've called and emailed them and they seem to be ignoring this issue.
    **** UPDATE 3/1/2012 ****
SOLUTION RIGHT HERE:  INSTALL AN OLDER NETWORK DRIVER FROM HP (sounds crazy, but it works).  See below link to driver download.
I (and many other owners of T420, 520, etc - see other posts if you doubt it) have *no* latency after installing this older driver from HP. But as soon as I install the Lenovo-provided driver 11.12.38.* or any later one from Microsoft or the Intel generic driver (intel no longer publishes the old driver), I see *immediate* problems with latency, mouse and audio stutter. But use the driver published by HP (specifically version 11.12.36.0, published 5/4/2011) -- Problem solved!  I tested with streaming and browsing for several hours and no spiking or stutter.
Here's where to get the english language download from HP:  >> DRIVER DOWNLOAD PAGE HERE <<
Lenovo, PLEASE: this is strong evidence of a faulty driver for those of us with a t420s (and other thinkpad users out there using the intel 82579LM chip under x64).  I encourage you to review this solution and engineer an update for the Intel gigabit adapter, or at minimum, roll back to the older driver or some Lenovo approved derivative so it doesn't cause all of us notebook users such a major headache.  It's very bizarre that we would need to go to another manufacturer to get a working driver...I was ready to return the machine over this issue!
Aside from that adapter problem, I've been pleased with the t420s performance and features.  Thanks again lopiuh for this workaround.

    ***** END UPDATE *****
**** OLDER STUFF I TRIED, which somewhat helped, but the real solution is to use the old HP DRIVER above. ******
Basically, my approach was to reduce the 'auto' parameters for the adapter, to reduce the amount of logic running on the adapter itself.
    1. Install the PRO set extension tools on this adapter, so you can more easily manage advanced settings.  I think Lenovo offers a version in the driver downloads area which adds this management extension, but it is not the standard one offered by the system update utility, and the intel site has a later driver, so I gambled and downloaded the latest version from Intel for this adapter.  It installed without issue, but I'm sure Lenovo would prefer you stick with their OEM packages. Anyway, here's the one I used: http://www.intel.com/support/ethernetcomponents/controllers/82579/sb/CS-032239.htm (link near the top for the download).  You may want to make a system restore point before you install any drivers outside of OEM approved.
    2.  Change the default settings for the adapter in Device Manager.  Right click properties for the Intel 82579LM in Network Adapters.  Change the link speed (if the extension was installed properly, you'll see the intel logo on the tab for Link Speed, and a choice for Speed and Duplex.  Change this from 'Auto Negotiate' to whatever speed your network is.  I have gigabit full duplex, and that worked for me.  This by itself was the biggest improvement with DPC latency.
    3. Go to the Advanced tab.  I took the approach that I wanted to disable as much 'auto' stuff as possible, and force the adapter to use a particular setting.  Thus:
    Interrupt Moderation: Disabled
Jumbo Packet: 9014 bytes (I have several devices that can use bigger packets on network, such as readynas)
Performance Options: click properties: Flow control - Disabled; Interrupt Moderation Rate - Off; and then double the receive and transmit buffer sizes (for me this was 512 and 1024 respectively).
I hope this may be helpful to some other owners, but I don't work for Lenovo or Intel so please don't blame me if something goes wrong during your tweaking.  This worked (for me) to significantly reduce stuttering problems, though they are not completely gone; your mileage may vary.  If you have this same problem, I'd appreciate if you would post about it so I can understand if it is a more widespread problem.
    Good luck, mojojojo

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi mojojoj0
For my W520, up till now I do not have latency issues. My set of configuration for Intel NIC is slight different.
    2. This may cause connection problems when you are connecting to different network. Different network (switches, routers) have different configuration. Previously I set it to Gigabit Full Duplex, I can't connect to any 10/100 network until I change it back to Auto negotiation.
I would suggest changing back to auto negotiation when you are connecting to outside network, not all places are using gigabit switches.
    3. Interesting, I guess I would try it and feedback and see how much improvement for network performance.
From what I know, increasing receive and transmit buffer improve NIC and network card performance, but computer may slightly more memory.
Maybe you can try this, part of my settings:
    Large Send Offload (IPv4) & (IPv6) Enabled
    TCP & UDP Checksum Offload (IPv4) & (IPv6) Tx & Rx Enabled
IPv4 Checksum Offload Tx & Rx Enabled
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers
    Peter

  • IDT HD Audio stuttering 3d apps/games/tf2 - Windows 7 x64 - Pavilion dv7-4113tx

As per the rules I need to state:
I am a HP employee, my views/opinions/etc are my own and do not represent those of HP.
    This is cross-posted from freezes/lockups.
I would file some sort of bug report - but I wouldn't know where to start, I don't work in an area that has anything to do with manufacturing HP products; and this is my free time now  and I don't have intranet access .
I recently picked up a HP Pavilion dv7-4113tx Entertainment Notebook PC [ XV780PA ] for my personal use and overall it's been pretty good. It comes with windows 7 Home Premium x64 bit.
there is however an issue that I must bring up in regard to gaming, or i would assume any intensive 3d application, most notably Valve games, my test of choice is Team Fortress 2.
The game will work fine in native resolution - I get around 100-120fps but about every 30 seconds - 2 minutes, there is a audio/video stutter (by stutter, it will repeat the last .5 seconds of audio about 3-4 times in a loop while the screen will freeze on where the first audio stutter started), which will cause the game to 'freeze' for approximately 2 seconds and then continue where you left off.
Team fortress 2 is an incredibly time critical multiplayer online game, and this delay essentially means my e-death on multiple occasions.
I initially thought it was the graphics card, or the drivers - I upgraded the drivers to the latest on the ATI site, that increased my fps, but the stuttering was still there. After searching around on the internet a bit, i found a suggestion to disable the audio driver (device manager lists it as - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) as a test - so I did so.
The game purrs like a kitten - absolutely no stuttering. my score went up immediately
So, my next step was to try and get some Updated Drivers for the IDT Audio device (note, i cannot find a model name anywhere in the hp specs - or on the internet really) - I found out IDT themselves cannot release drivers, that these can only be obtained through OEMs.
    which brings me to here.
now - the closest I have found to the drivers I required are here:  IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7
Note: - it says on the page that they are 32 bit drivers - but I've found they work with the 64 bit version of windows.
these worked a little better - it fixed another annoying issue - the fact if you use the volume controls in a fullscreen application that it will switch back to the desktop to display the on screen slider bar of the volume going down (which was arguably redundant as windows 7 displays the speaker volume in the bottom right hand corner) - and it just turns the audio down as intended.
however - the stuttering is still very noticeably present .
I then tried to use the HP Support assistant  to run automated diagnostics and troubleshoot... which then downloaded the old drivers that gave me that fullscreen volume control issue back again - so i assume the original drivers.
So I installed the other drivers again.
My next test will be to use an external USB or firewire soundcard to see if this will allow me have games with sound.
Can an appropriate agent at HP please address this concern and notify when this bug will be fixed - IDT says they work with OEM's to fix issues regularly on the IDT link above.
I believe this is such an issue that will likely require a bug fix.

    Hi ozDerek,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums. Since this is a duplicate post I'm going to lock this one, please check your other post here for replies:

  • Video/audio Stuttering on Macbook 13

    Hi All
I have a mid 2007 Macbook 13 running OS X Lion 10.7.4.  all up to date.  Initially I had 4G's of ram ( I know it only reads 3 ) now I have it running on only 2.
Problem is video/audio stuttering when running movies. mostly netflix and or connected to a flat screen tv. on wireless or wired connection.  but it also happens just running youtube videos or videos that I have on the system mostly in .AVI format.   I could be running movies with VLC or quicktime and same ting.  I've tried turning every running program off.  like firewall, little snitch, sophos AV, etc.  after turning them all off I do a restart.  I have done permssion repair, checked the disk, run the daily scripts,  even downgraded to SL to see if Lion was too much for the system and nothing.  of of the 4G's of ram that I have.  I swapped them to see if maybe one or 2 of them ware bad.  when I install the operating system, I do a clean install.  delete partition, format, the whole thing and bring it up to date.  not all at one time.  disk permissions repaired after each big updated.  almost half the time the videos will run ok and than it starts stuttering.  when is doing it.  not even the mouse responds in those few seconds.  is like something is grabbing all the system memory for a few seconds at a time.  it has gotten to the point that the system completly frezzes and I get that black translusent window that says the system needs to be restarted.
I have about 40% free HD space.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The behavior you mention is typical of MacBooks with the GMA 950 video chipset and 64MB VRAM.
The best solution I've found is to quickly pause the video and let the video load completely before watching, IF the website allows it and will preload the content. Not all of them do. Some sites automatically buffer before they begin playing.
Watch in a window rather than full-screen.
Watch content on your MacBook screen rather than a HDTV.
The Safari Extension "ClickToFlash" lets you choose whether to load Flash content at all. It also allows 'preferring' H264/HTML5 web video content when available, and seems to be a bit better than simply defaulting to Flash content for every website.
I have a mid-2007 MacBook 2,1 with 4/3GB RAM. It is the very oldest model capable of supporting Lion. After reading of performance issues with these older systems in these forums, I chose to remain on Snow Leopard rather than upgrading to Lion. Snow Leopard runs most things I do very well in 3GB. Lion really seems to need 4GB and would like 8GB, from what I read here.
You don't mention how fast your internet connection is. A faster internet connection MIGHT help some. A wired Ethernet connection MIGHT offer a bit more throughput than WiFi. Worth trying out, especially if you have a friend with a faster connection where you can try before you pay to upgrade.
Ultimately we're talking about 5-year-old computers. That's "ancient" in computer life cycles, and the best solution (not most cost-effective) is a new(er) Mac. It's not a problem unique to Mac. Old Windows XP systems lack the performance of new hardware running 64-bit Windows 7.
New or recent Refurbs with 4GB or more RAM, faster video chipset, more VRAM, faster clock-speed, Intel "Sandy Bridge" (or "Ivy Bridge" likely coming soon) dual-core or quad-core processor, and, yes, a hefty pricetag to match. Anything else is at best a temporary measure to buy a bit of time (a year, maybe?) until you can purchase a new(er) faster better Mac.

  • My burned audio CD/DVD from iTunes doesn't play on a CD/DVD audio player

If I burn audio CD or DVD from my iTunes, I cannot play this music on an external player. Any recommendations? Thanks
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi I just burned an MP3 CD straight from iTunes, and it doesn't play on any MP3 CD player I've tried it on (car MP3 deck, DVD player that plays audio CDs, and MP3s). Audio CDs burned from iTunes work fine though.
I've read somewhere, that when burning MP3 CDs from iTunes, iTunes burns it with Apples standard format, rather than CD players standard format of ISO 9660. And that is the reason why burned MP3 CDs from iTunes only plays on a Mac.
A work around I've done was select all the songs from my list duplicate them in another folder, and then reconvert them in MP3s (so that I don't have to search all over the place for each MP3 file). I then burned these MP3s onto a CD-R using toast's MP3 CD format. And it works on all my MP3 CD players. However, in doing this process, I've lost all the tags for each MP3. The only thing that comes up in the display is the name of the song. Artist, Album, etc... don't show up anymore.
Is there a way of burning an MP3 CD that will play on all MP3 enabled players, while keeping all ID Tags intact, in iTunes?
    Thanks.

I am running iTunes 7.1.1.5 (WinXP). When opening iTunes, I get an error message that there "are problems with your audio configuration." In iTunes support, I followed instructions to remove Quicktime then reinstall as standalone (without iTunes). Same problem persists. I will add that same problem occurred about a month ago, but that time the same steps of removing Quicktime, then reinstalling as standalone corrected the problem. Unfortunately, it recurred.
