Audio Suggestions for Filming School Plays

I'm trying to obtain a better quality soundtrack for my wife's school plays (she's the music teacher). They don't have much of a sound system although I can combine the music from a digital source and the audio from the microphones (for speaking parts) into one stereo mini-jack. What is missing is the general audio; that is she has 100 kids on stage at once singing and there are no omni directional mic's that can pick that up. I have a Sony SR12 set up at the back of the auditorium and the audio is atrocious from that distance (and with that equipment).
Any recommendations? I'm looking for mic setup suggestions and recording source equipment that I can later take into Final Cut and sync with the video.
Keep in mind as best you can that while I do love my gadgets, I don't have $2000 bucks to spend on equipment, but I want to get this as close to professional as I can.
Thanks in Advance.

I video school plays as well: three cams (two HDV for following actors/action, one DV to cover the whole stage); My best audio has come from using a Rode NT4 dual capsule X/Y mic in the center, and a matched pair of Rode NT5's with omni capsules hard left and right.
The NT4 center gets good stereo and minimized the sound stage shift (left and right) as a centered actor turns his head left and right. Wide set stereo mics can have the sound stage flying all over the place as actors move their heads, but don't actually travel anywhere on the stage. The Rode needs phantom power OR a battery and plugs right into an XLR input on my HDV or DV cams. This mic pair I consider the stereo master audio track, so I use the DV camera (uncompressed PCM).
The two omni mics set left and right are used for overall ambiance if I need to add it (lightly), enhanced stereo, and uneven volume when actors speak from hard stage left/right, or even in the wings. I use the NT5 pair because they are a good match for the NT4 capsules from an audio perspecive, and they are small. They need phantom power and plug into XLR camera input.
The third camera only records audio for sync purposes, and I use the on camera mic.
Newer alternative that I've only tried on a short piece, but it worked well:
A Zoom H4n digital recorder. It has decent (not as good as the Rode's) on board mics that are in an X/Y pattern at 90 or 120 degrees (more centered / more stereo). It also has two XLR or 1/4" input jacks that can supply phantom power to external microphones. It will record all 4 tracks at once in 16 bit 48kHz uncompresed (WAV), or various compressed formats. It takes SD/HC cards, and a 8MB card (about $20 or less from Amazon) will hold hours of audio. It runs on batteries (risky or a wall wart that is included. It can mount to a camera tripod mount, and a mic stand adapter is included.
It's cheap enough, and for many uses, the onboard X/Y mics would be fine. Our theater stage is quite large, so the outboard external mics are needed to even things out.
Note also that I avoid whatever sound-reinforcement mics/speakers the theater wants to use. Too many ground loop issues, and reinforcement is different than audio for video. Keep your mics away from the speakers
The Zoom is about $350 from Sweetwater.
Then you can use your on camera mic for backup (something goes whoops, you still have sound, and you have flexibility in mic placement; the Zoom goes center, but maybe a bit back from the stage to pick up a more even sound stage; the omni l/r mics at about the same distance. Since the four tracks are two stereo pairs, you can play with delays if you get chorusing or echoing due to sound delays. But they are close enough to the audio source (the singers), that ambient echos are reduced and can be dealt with using compression, gates, etc. in FCP.
If you want to get more serious about audio for video, there's alway Logic or ProTools depending on your needs. I have ProTools for my studio (audio only), but have only used the LT version once for a problematic HVAC noise background I need to deal with. Probably could have done it in Sound Track Pro, but I'm just more familiar with PT.
Good Luck.

  • How do I get the audio from the film to play back in Logic 8?

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I opened up a new project. Clicked on produce and the clicked on
music for picture and then went to options and clicked on open movie. The movie loads in to logic. When I press play the film starts without the audio. I tried going into utilities and then to audio midi set up and switched the properties section to US-144 (tascam 144 interface) and still nothing. The movie plays for about a few seconds then stops and gives me this message: "Sample Rate 44100 recognized. Check conflict between Logic Pro and external device." What can I do? KGT

    hi
you've 2 issues here, sample rate and audio from film.
Re film audio, it's under options...
Sample rate, do a forum search?
SFLOGICNINJA has a great "How to" on working with film, google him.

  • 5.1 audio suggestions for FCS2 with a Decklink Extreme and Mac Pro?

I'm using a Mac Pro with Final Cut Studio, and I'm wondering if I can get 5.1 sound out of the decklink card. When I use a Firewire interface (M-audio firewire 410) to output audio, it is out of sync with the video coming out of the decklink card. So I guess the alternative is to find out how to get AES/EBU to output the 12 channels it says it can do in HD. I can't afford an HDCAM deck with 12 outputs, so how would any of you suggest I go about doing something like this? I really just want to get 5.1 going and in sync for the Final Cut Studio 2 release.
Thanks so much for any help!

    Hi Bob,
I'm using a Mac Pro with Final Cut Studio, and I'm

card. When I use a Firewire interface (M-audio
firewire 410) to output audio, it is out of sync with

See my response to your other post on this. Note that M-Audio is not famous for excellence with Core Audio drivers.
    So I
guess the alternative is to find out how to get
AES/EBU to output the 12 channels it says it can do
in HD. I can't afford an HDCAM deck with 12 outputs,
so how would any of you suggest I go about doing
    something like this?
The Decklink AES/EBU hardware output will only source 2 channels of audio. If you have the 410, just use that with your audio software and set up the offset as I previously described. Plug its analog outs into your surround controller. It's very straight forward and you shouldn't have too much trouble.
If you tell us what audio software you're intending to use to produce your soundtrack, we could probably be more helpful.

  • Audio post for Film-Out

    Hi Guys,
I have been researching the workflow for creating a film-out from HVX200 and have pretty much sorted the visual side of it all.
    HVX200 Filmout Workflow
But I am now looking at the audio side of it all. I am totally new to this side of it and was wondering if someone could tell me the exact workflow to follow to accurately post the audio for a 23.98 project. Would it be better to use an audio post house?
Your help would be very much appreciated!

  • PC Audio Software for Film

    Hi,
I've just hired a musician to compose some songs for my movie, but he doesn't have experience writing music to match picture. Because he works on a PC, we're having trouble finding a simple Audio editing software that allows you to watch real-time video simultaneously. Would Pro Tools be our best option? I apologize that this is a PC related question, but I was hoping that someone would know a good cheap PC alternative to Apple's Soundtrack or Logic. Also, the video is encoded in H.264 so hopefully the software would be compatible. Any info much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alexander

Cubase should do it. Would want to check that it takes that specific video protocol though.

  • Audio problems for online videos played with HDMI hookup

I have a pavilion dv4 1155se notebook with vista os, and i have been having some sound problems when i hook my computer up to my hdtv. my knowledge about computers is fairly limited so bear with me please. whenever i hook my notebook up to my tv (using hdmi) to play online videos the sound will only come out of the speakers on my laptop, not the tv. the sound comes through the tv's speakers for everything else (music, games, etc) and it used to work for the online videos but the last couple times i've hooked my laptop up the sound only comes out of the notebooks speakers. the digital output device is enabled like it should be, it's just this one thing that is not working right. if anyone could help me out with this i would really appreciate it.

Re-export the .mov using QT Pro's iPod preset. If you song is in there, it will play. Make sure that 'Make Self Contained' is checked.

    Hello there, tomazdes.
The following Knowledge Base article written for the USB SuperDrive, offers some practical steps to try when issues present themselves with particular content playback (feel free to skip Step 3 when working with an iMac or MacBook with built-in drives):
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
    Particularly:
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • My Ipad 2 external speakers does not work and headphones has popping sound. This all occured at the same time as my Iphone and Ipod headphones only played mono (no, the "mono" option is not on). How can there be audio issue for all these devices?

My IPad 2 external speaker does not work and the original headphones have popping sound when used. This all occurred at the same time as my IPhone and IPod headphones only plays mono (and no, the "mono" option is not on) with the original headphones, as well as, other headphones tested.  How can there be audio issue for all these devices at the same time?
As you may have noted from the list of Apple devices I own, I believed in the Apple and the products it was producing; but it is hard to believe from my experience and the other voices within the Apple Community that we are all experiencing the same hardware issues. Especially since I recently, I upgraded to an IPhone 4g (no, my faith in IPhone 5 series is very little) and is experiencing the same audio problem as described above. So now, I am off to the Apple store again to be told that it’s a hardware problem on new IPhone. Really? Apple, what happen to the pride in the product you were producing?

Everyone does things a little differently. I love to "jam " along with iTunes ( or old Lp's) . Always have. That's where/how I've learned to play .
I'm sure leonieDF is giving a proper way to jam along on a keyboard with an iTune. He blows my mind all the time with what he knows. Nuff respects to him !
What I do is make a GB project I call "Jam With". I'll make several new tracks that are blank. Just has a few instruments named in the blank tracks. You can change those per song ...
Because I'm not concerned about changing the pitch / key.... of the iTune or the tempo ... I can simply play along with it.
    Peace,
    P. Dreadie

  • What do you guys suggest for playing guitar thru my Macbook Air? I use guitar pro software to learn tabs but I would like to be able to play along thru the computer. thanks

I used to play my guitar thru my PC using a line 6 Guitar port, Then I could play along with Guitar Pro tabs or MP3's. Now I have the Guitar Pro software on my Mac Air and I neeed an interface (which I can get at the Appple store- guitar plug to USB) but I neeed a suggestion for what software to run as an amp simulator, maybe line 6 is the best or maybe there are others I should check out. I know there are guitar "apps" for Ipads etc but this is a Mac. BTW I did not like the guitar sounds produced by Garageband. Thanks

I'm using GJABB with Logic Express 7.2.3 and have no problems.
However, I haven't started messing around with the modulation wheel yet which is pretty important in this libary since it controls volume. The sounds are great, though. I've just raised the mod wheel on each track to get the basic arrangement done, then I'll try the mod wheel for expression.
One thing about this library is that it pretty much forces you to do single horn lines since each patch is monophonic (like the real instrument). It does produce pretty nice results that way. I haven't tried upping the polyphony as I like the results this way.

  • Can any one suggest a realtime audio recorder for Reaktor in Logic please?

    Hi all,
So its been a few days so far with Logic Pro 7 on my new intel Mac, I made the jump from PC land and Nuendo and am trying to get up to speed.
What I am in dire need of is an application that I can use at the same time as Logic to record the output of some granular parts from Raktor5.
Basically I am trying to manually do some tweaks on sounds that I just want to be recorder into audio files and then inport them into logic for further editing.
Can any one make a good suggestion for such a think, or does Logic have something similar to this already built in?
Thank you all in advance for the help and past help I have recieved in this forum.
    Cheers!

    Hi all,
Thanks for the ideas... I went with the recorder box and that solution worked perfect! I used to be on a PC and had a Creamware system that allows for routing of audio any where with as many drivers as you want EG: Asio2, Wave and such at the same time so you could just have (at the time I was using Nuendo3) your DAW up, open an instance of soundforge and start weaking Reaktor ensembles from within your DAW host while recording direct to disk in sound forge with out having to do anything, it worked amazingly well.
This is the next best thing.
Now I just need to spend more time in Logic to learn my way around as I am a new user..
    Cheers!

That Photoshop Elements 9.0.3 Update has generally been discouraged by the Photoshop Elements gurus. But, I am not going to factor that into this at this point.
This is what I would ask you to look at in the Elements Organizer 9 accessed from the Photoshop Elements 9 or Premiere Elements 9.
    a. Create your slideshow in the Elements Organizer 9/Create/Slideshow/Slideshow Editor. Then use the Output option of Edit with Premiere Elements.
From your description, you are probably using the Output Option of Burn to Disc DVD which will take your slideshow directly in the Disc Menu section of Premiere Elements 9. The preferred transfer of the Elements Organizer 9 slideshow to Premiere Elements 9 Editor is by the non wmv route "Edit with Premiere Elements" not the wmv route of Burn to Disc DVD.
Let us explore if any of the above is involved in your issue and then we will decide what next if necessary.
    Thanks.

  • Why do audio tracks for embedded .swfs for Slide 14, 25 and 36 audio tracks auto play on Slide 1?

I have created a Captivate course with no audio.
Slide 14 in the course has an inserted .swf animation WITH audio (a demo with ‘Kate’s voice’).
Slide 25 in the course has an inserted .swf animation WITH audio.
Slide 36 in the course has an inserted .swf animation WITH audio.
These animations are ‘hidden’ in the slide 14, 25, 36 Properties, and are told to ‘show’ when user clicks a button on the slide.
When published to my hard drive, the course runs as it should, and the animations play correctly when user clicks the play button on slides 14, 25 and 36.
When published course is uploaded to a file server, the course runs as it should, and the animations play correctly when user clicks the play button on slides 14, 25 and 36.
When published course is uploaded to a web server, all 3 .swf animations show up for a split second, (plus 2 other small animated images) one after another, and then disappear, and then the audio of the 1st starts playing, 5 seconds later the audio of the 2nd starts playing, and 5 seconds later the audio of the 3rd starts playing.
The odd thing about this is that once the course is in the Internet Brower cache and the course is refreshed, the audio of the 3 embedded .swfs does not start playing on slide one, and the course works as it should.
Can you please tell me what to do to make the 3 .SWFs NOT execute when slide one of the course is opened?

Did you ever get an answer to this question? Since you have partial success, perhaps you can share some info. My main .swf is loaded on a web server and links to other URLs works well but links to other .swf that are loaded in the same directory as the main .swf do not activate at all..no sound, no visual. Did you load your sub-swf files in the same directory? did you use a special naming scheme? did you load the .html file for the sub-swf?

here in ol' Europe, school boards use chalk and are not smart …
h264.mp4 is actually the most common 'standard' (4000 video 'standards' aaaaand counting)
mp4 is indeed universal (Mac, Windows, Linux), and since YouTube, the h264 codec has a good installed base .....
you can bump into probs only when it comes to sheer amount of data:
for instance cheap 'digital frames' are sortof over-whelmed, if you try to playback 720/30p in high quality.
I'm not familiar with 21st cent devices as SmartBoards ... again, it could happen, you have to reduce resolution/fps/bit-rate to avoid clutter&stutter in the video.
I'm using such encoded files successfully on Playstation3, WD HD TV or flatscreenTVs with integrated usb-connection (via stick), etc
    imho, it should work welll .............. < fingers-crossed >

  • Any suggestions for Xilinx products to support audio input or touch screens?

    Hi,
My boss just told me that I will get some funding from our department for new equipment purchase. We want to spend the money on Xilinx FPGA and tool kit.
We already have a ML605 evaluation board in our lab. Currently, we just make it  communicate with PC with UART cable, but we want to have better demonstrations in the future.
    (1) We want to use a microphone to record speech signals during real time and send the audio signals to FPGA;
    (2) We want to have a touch screen for users to write on, and the handwritten images will be send to the FPGA;
    (3) Any suggestions for fancier demonstration? Video detection or robots?
    For (1), maybe it is possible to just use ML605. But I heard something called "FMC card". So any suggestions on such products;
For (2), what kind of boards or cards should we purchase?
Also important,  we can also buy a new evaluation board with Virtex-7, if such boards already support (1) and (2).
Any suggestions will be appreciated :-)
