Audio sync loss on capture

the other day i captured a tape - pal mini-dv, 32k audio - with appropriate settings only to find afterwards that audio was totally out of sync.
throughout the entire captured material, it was 2 full seconds late!
i deleted the captured material, created a new project with the same settings as before, captured with the same settings to the same harddisk, and now everything is fine ....
i have not changed any settings, used the same hardware, i have not even restarted the machine ...
btw audio was out of sync even in qt player - so this wasn't an fcp issue either...
still got me stumped ...

Our group commonly shoots instructionals that require 4 tracks of audio on the camera, thus 32 KHz/12-bit source in DV NTSC.
I have recently found that after capturing at matching settings, that the first clip, and only the first clip of the batch capture, is out of sync by about 1.5 seconds. All the following clips are in sync. It's gotten to the point where we need to log a short "dummy clip" to capture first in the batch, just to fool the system to getting our first real clip in sync.
We are going to try setting the sequence settings to match the 32 KHz/12-bit source and see if that helps.
Otherwise, do you recommend that we resample all our footage's audio, (both stereo pairs), to 48 KHz/16-bit and use it in a default DV NTSC 48 K sequence?

  • Audio sync prob after capturing for 10 minutes or so

I have an audio sync problem when I import into Final Cut Express. Everything is fine but lets say around 15 minutes or so there is a slight sync problem.
What I have been doing is I import into IMovie because I have it setup to cut the clips after 10 minutes. This is great because I can let it run..and it automatically splits the clips up without any dropped frames at all. The problem is I then have to drag those clips..one by one into my external harddrive. That takes time and then I have to render the audio in Final Cut Express.
I do like though that the clips are a little over 2gigs..which is good for transfering between drives and backing it up onto a DVD.
Is there a way you can do what I do in iMovie...it automatically starts a new clip after ten minutes or whatever...this way I don't have to transfer and render.

FCE does not break up clips on capture. You can capture in 10 minute chunks if you want.
The audio sync problem can be caused by a number of things most common of which is using the wrong settings for your capture, where your settings audio sample rate doesn't match your media.

  • FCP Audio Sync Loss

I am using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4. I just loaded Leopard and now my audio sync is at least 20 frames off. All clips before the Leopard upgrade work just fine but any new clips are not sync'd.
Does FCP 5.0.4 not work with Leopard..... if so, will udgrading to Fianl Cut Studio 2 solve this problem.
    Thanks.

can't you upgrade to FCP 5.1.4? that is the latest FCP version of 5.

  • Audio sync lost when capturing

I have recently encountered a problem while log and capturing the past two tapes. This is something that is new to me because in my previous 3+ years of using FCP I have never came across this. I am using the Sony DSR-11 and FCP 4.5 with 4 GB of Ram on a G5. I have corrected the problem within FCP by moving the video +7 frames to match up the audio, but was wondering what I can do to fix the problem while I capture. If anyone has encountered such a thing or knows the fix please let me know. I'm not sure if it's the deck, computer, or hard drives.
    Thanks

One way to test is to do a capture using the camera as the tape drive.
If it syncs ok using the camera and using the DSR-11 it does not, there is something in the way the canon wrote the data that the sony is having difficulty reading.
What was the format of the recording - straight NTSC (or PAL) DV?
How are you monitoring the disfunctional sync? Are audio and video going out firewire to their respective devices or do you have video going out firewire and monitoring audio off of the computer audio out?

  • Audio Sync from SVHS capture

okay, my head is about to explode. We have captured about 8 hours of SVHS footage using an AJA IOLa, using the DV/NTSC preset, 29.97fps, audio at 48K, no one can remember if we set it for non-drop or drop frame. The problem we have is that the audio drifts out of sync very badly. Any ideas?
BTW, running 10.4.8, 5.1.2, everything is up to date on this machine(G5 DP, 1.5 gigs, G-Raids, etc.).
    K

Any idea why this is happening?< </div>
You can search here for hundreds of threads on drifting audio. The causes are way too numerous to attempt to diagnose from where I sit but here are some.
The problem is usually caused by your transcoding or input system. If you are patching your VHS into a DV camcorder and coming in on FW, things should stay locked. If your deck is from Canon, you have a BIG probme right there and you must use my method to make the clips the same length. Canon's DV codec is non-standard. You can easily correct the issue with my previous post by rendering the audio.
If you are coming in through a capture card, you need to talk to the mfr of the card.
The other question is why are you trying to bring that much material into FCP? Try dubbing it to a DV tape and capture only what you need.

  • Audio sync loss in iTunes 8.1.1.10

I've used iTunes on Windows (Vista) for some time now playing my music library
    only.
Recently, for the first time, I downloaded a music video from the iTunes store
(Robert Palmer). Mainly because I had some gift credit to use.
But I was very dissapointed in the playback, under iTunes, the audio drifts
from the video quite noticably. With about 20 seconds it's irritatingly out
    of sync.
Fortunately, since it's not DRM'd. I can play the clip using other players
E.G. VLC, where it plays in perfect sync all the way through.
I note the audio in this case is 44,1KHz. Is iTunes unable to play 44.1 KHz audio corrrectly?
    Ross.

I am still having a problem getting this issue resolved with Apple.
It's been over a week since I called. I spent 4 hours on the phone with the Apple Tech. He basically had me remove from my computer two USB port and my computer after that would not even recognized my phone. I had to do a chat for one hour with Sony and I still don't think my computer is working properly.
I am awaiting a call from Apple after their engineers figure out the problem. I had to do an iTunes diagnostic to email to them. I did the filehippo thing and that didn't work (this was suggested by the Apple tech since Apple cannot access it's old programs). I have reinstalled iTunes so many time I lost count.
I am ready to switch to a Blackberry if Apple doesn't resolve the issue this week. I can't be in a position not to sync my computer and phone too much longer.
FWIW, the Apple tech told me today that this issue is affecting 10% of all iPhone 3G users....that's a lot of frustrated users.

  • FCE and QT PRO Analog Capture Audio sync problems

I have had major problems importing analog content into a DV quicktime movie and having the audio match.
First example: using a sony digital 8 camera with old hi-8 tapes (the camera does the analog to digital conversion) I open final cut express HD capture now or new movie recording in QT pro, and go for the whole tape or tv show. beginning is usually ok, but if i stop and start the camera, fast forward through commercials while capturing, or let the source end before i stop the capture It seems the audio becomes un-synced. usually lags by 1 sec or so, but sometimes the audio comes early by a few frames. sometimes progressivly getting worse later in the capture, sometimes the whole thing is off by the same amount. If i capture between camera starts and stops i have no problems.
Second example: using a pyro AV firewire analog converter, I get the same behavior when trying to capture in Final cut Express HD and QT pro.
My guess is that since there is no timecode on the analog source that somehow messes things up, but why do these programs shift the audio on me?

Most likely cause is your photographer changed the audio rate from 44.1k or 48k to something else.
Aside from that, no, it's highly unlikely it is the software. It's easy to blame FCP for this stuff, and we love to do it, but the capture from DV over FW is a complete clone of a digital file, nothing is being changed by FCP or QT during the process, unless your settings have been tweaked and that's a user decision.
If simply sliding the audio back into sync is not an option, dub the tapes to another DV deck via FW (producing a clone, not a generational loss) and capture form the dubs. You can experiment with a short take or two.
If the audio sync issue persists, it's the original footage, not FCP.

  • HELP!! Audio Out of Sync in Anamorphic Capture... Any Help Appreciated

I've been having problems with the audio drifting when I capture anamorphic footage for longer than 10 minute segments. I've captured 4:3 NTSC DV tape to see if it was my GL2 and I also hooked up my camera to a monitor to playback the tape but the audio was in sync all the way through for both tests. Only capturing the anamorphic footage results in audio drifts regardless of any capture settings.

I am fairly new to iDVD 6 and iMovie HD (widescreen), but I an currently assembling a highlight DVD for my daughter's softball team. We are in mid season. I had been creating separate movies (per game). I extracted audio and/or added sound and video effects to some of the movies clips. Alas not only do the extracted (original audio) and added audio (outdoor cheer) disappear but also the video special effects (slow motion) are not maintained in widescreen but are pillarboxed when copied/pasted.
At any rate, I am have now created a compilation iMovie and will be dumping new footage into it as we go. Editing the compilation, as well as editing separate "save as" individual game movies.
I only had 2-3 clips that had been audio manipulated and shared those back to my video camera and then reimported from camera back to the compilation project. The extracted audio with separate tracks are now a single audio clip but at least I have audio during those clips.
To end this ramble, knowing the limitations of messing with audio and trying to cut and paste to different movies I will now create duplicate movies with a master having no audio enhancements.

    Thanks, Len
I hadn't thought about this option. It seems like a
lot of work. I wish there was an easier way. I have
archived ("Shared" to full dv quality) to DVD-ROM
discs all the raw .dv clips AFTER extracting the
audio, hoping that I could use these clips to
assemble custom DVD-Videos in the future, without
having to "Extract Audio" a second time. The .dv
clips all play perfectly with the audio synced in
Quicktime. Of course, the clip's audio was in sync
before the "Extract Audio" was applied. This sync
problem ONLY rears it's ugly head with iDVD Video
discs (don't know about DVD Pro). Thanks again for
    the suggestion.

  • Exported Final Cut XML from Imovie09 causes loss of Audio Sync

I have recently upgraded to ILife09 and tried a process that always worked in ILife08 but now get Audio Sync problems.
I have created an Imovie project that is 2hours and 50 mins long and wanted to export it to Final Cut Express as XML. This used to work 100% with Imovie08. However, with this latest version of Imovie, when exported to Final Cut Express, the first 45 mins of the XML movie is well out of sync (Audio / Visual).
    Has anyone experienced this?

    Hi Roberic,
there is a bug in iMovie '09 that causes loss of audio sync when you use custom slow/fast motion. This has been experienced by many users. See for example this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9152271
I don't know if this applies to exports to .xml but it could well be that your problem lies here. There are some workarounds, being the easiest one to only use what the slow motion slider snaps to instead of entering custom speed percentages.

  • Loss of audio sync when importing Samsung Galaxy 2 (GT-I1900) video to Premier Elements 10

I am loosing audio sync when I import video from a Samsung Galaxy 2 GT-I1900 phone even when using settings chosen by Premier Elements 10.
The file plays OK in Windows 7 media player.
I have tried using both direct import from the phone and transferring the file separately without solving the problem.
The Premier Elements is version 10.0(20110902.Mol11.B123.280463)
Unlinking the audio and video makes no difference.
VideoReDo reports the file as :

Letting VideoReDo simply rewrite the file resulted in loss of all but the first few seconds of audio.

The computer is running Windows 7 Professional  64 bit version  Service Pack 1 kernel 6.1.7601.17944 (reported by SIW)
The computer motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68x-UD3H-B3 with an Intel Core i5-2500 CPU at 3.30GHz. Memory is 4GB.
I note that others have had similar problems with non video recorder recordings.
Can you suggest any file conversion of the original that will work – I have tried several with no improvement in the final result.
And can anyone shed light on what is the basic cause of these problems?

According to the Adobe installation information the trial version of Premiere Elements 11 is fully functional and the watermark is only present until a licence code is purchased.
I have edited AVI footage from a camcorder using the program with no problems (and no loss of audio sync) and the watermark is also present with this.
The odd placement of audio and video was caused by my not dragging the clip carefully enough.
What is odd is that the clip plays completely normally using WIndows Media Player and VLC Media player so I would expect Premiere Elements to be able to handle it without problems.
I think that there is some sort of bug in Premiere Elements' handling of mpe4 files (both in versions 10 and 11) rather than there being anything wrong with my computer.
Is there some way of communicating this directly to the Adobe programers ?
I enclose screenshots of the project settings:

  • Export as QuickTime Movie - lose audio sync

I have a 10 minute project that basically is a sequence of 10 nested sequences. It is an HDV project. I need to export it as a QuickTime Movie to maintain the ability to show it in HD. When I do so (using Export->QuickTime Movie - I am not using "Using QuickTime Conversion"), I maintain "Current Settings". The resulting .mov file, when played back in QuickTime Player (or anything else) has a progressively severe loss of audio sync. This is not present when playing the project within the timeline in FCP (6.0.3).
I have tried opening the project on a different computer with a virgin version of FCP 6.0.3, with the same results. I also made sure to render the individual sequences as well as the master sequence. I created a new sequence and added the individual chapters again, with the same result. I tried using the Media Manager to bring the project over to another computer - same problem. I also took this to an Apple One-to-One class with a FCP expert who couldn't figure it out either.
I could really use some help here.

First of all, thank you for responding.
I don't have a capture delay. The audio rate is 48 khz.
Interestingly, I had previously tried the separate export and stitching you suggested, but a strange thing occurred. If the resulting quicktime movie was created through a Save As... command, you wind up with a self-contained movie. When I did that, I started to get weird audio repetitions or dropouts as the movie went on. On the other hand, if I left it a reference movie, this didn't happen.
Anyway, this is a workaround, but it means that the whole thing has to be done over every time I make any change at all, and I am also concerned about getting rid of this problem for the future.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Problems with Audio Sync and Rendering

In both problems what happens is NOT consistent. If were, would think was a setting or something I was doing wrong.
About the rendering problem. I capture either through FCP Log and Capture or through my analog to digital "box", Formac Studio TVR. In both cases record in DV setting. When I then Import these files about 3 out of 4 times they need full rendering. But doing all things the same, there is that 1 out of 4th time where no rendering is needed at all. Does not seem to matter whether I capture through FCP or Foremac. Results seem the same. Like I said to begin with, if was consistent would figure that is just how the program is. But due to the time it takes to do a render, sure would be nice if could be avoided some way.
Regarding the Audio Sync. At times, maybe 1 out 10 times, the audio is bad. It begins at the beginning of the film being out of sync maybe two or three frames. But then every 10 minutes of film it progressively get's worse, losing a good 6 to 10 frames as one goes. I can fix by doing a lot of cutting and then moving the film around till it is in sync again, but as you can imagine takes a LOT of extra work. Any ideas as to why this is happening and what could be done to prevent in future??
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I've used flip4mac for about a year and have had no problems with it. I mostly use it to export preview versions for windoze people. The quality is very good, though it takes significantly longer to export than a similar-quality quicktime movie.

  • Having trouble with Audio Sync in FCExpress

Hello, everyone...a question for the board.
I recently acquired a new iMac with Final Cut Express...planning to try some video editing at home.
I haven't been successful with the proper configuration for captured video, however...using a Sony TRV-900 as my source, video feeding in via firewire 800 (I bought a 400/800 adapter to make it work), and ingesting using NTSC Basic...however, my audio is still not in sync with the video--the video is always ahead, and it jumps further ahead the more I ingest.
Is there some configuration I need to use so that the audio syncs correctly? Is it, as I suspect, a drop-frame issue that I haven't set up correctly?
Any help you could throw my way would be very much appreciated.

I realize that most DV cameras will record in 32 and 48 sampling rates. What I'm trying to get you to do is see what you've ALREADY recorded.
Open one of the captured clips in QuickTime, then hit Command j to see the movie properties. Or in FCP, right-click on a captured clip and choose Item Properties to see what audio you are trying to capture. Once you know that, create a Sequence with those settings, then capture any remaining footage with those settings. If needed, recapture any footage that was previously captured using the wrong settings.

  • Sync problem during capture

Hello, if anyone can solve this for me I owe them a large beer.
I have FCE 3.0 which has been working fine for the past year, but recently every tape i capture has serious audio sync problems. initally i thought it was the camera, but i have 2 and the problem occurred from both, then i thought it was the tape so i tried various tapes including ones that had previously worked, but the problem persisted. Then i thought it might be the cable, but the tapes import fine into i-movie, so it can't be that. I checked the capture settings - has always been and still is 48 pal - i've always use the same cameras (canon xm2s).
The problem is that the video freezes every 31 seconds for about 28 frames, but the audio doesn't, so that you get a sync problem that increases as the clip progresses. you can see the video actually freezing in the capture window, although it plays back fine in the camera (and in i-movie).
This is killing me as it is simply impossible to edit as the sync problem is not constant so its not just a matter of doing the math & moving the audio.
I've spent about 5 hours today trouble shooting this & trawling through user forums to find some help and after reading an article on this site (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305284) have ordered an upgrade to FCE 3.5, but am not convinced.
Has anyone any similar experiences / advice / good contacts for tech support?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
i mean it about the beer!

  • Jittery HD Video in CS4 After Updates - Audio Sync Before Updates

I just got a new laptop, an Asus G73JW. I loaded up my Adobe Production Premium CS4 suite, opened a project in HDV 1080i setting, but the audio was out of sync. I checked it in WMP and it appeared fine. I did the Adobe updates and the audio sync issue was fixed, unfortunately, the video is now jittery and looks horrible. I would much rather have audio sync issues, as least I can fix that, even if tedious.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit OS and all updates are done in both Win 7 and Adobe. I captured the HDV in HDV Split and they are .m2t files.
Any ideas what the jittery video issues are? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,

Well this is ebarassing, but it works fine now after a reboot. I just had the OS reinstalled after corruption issues in the original install. I forgot to turn Windows auto update off this time and I didn't realize that Windows was updating in the background as I was working. It is turned off now, and I went through my settings more carefully.
I am editing HD with my new laptop now with no isues and it works great.
