Audio sync problem once burned. Everything great in iMovie, once exported to iDVD and burned audio is 20 minutes out of sync.

My movie is a wedding, so it's 1 hr 35 min long. I've used 3 songs from iTunes and no other outside audio. I've tried the following already:
Changing the encoding settings from Best Performance to Professional Quality. (becuase an error came up saying movie is too long, change encoder setting)
Changing the Single-Layer Disc to Double-Layer Disc.
Splitting the video into 2 parts to make it shorter.
Getting rid of the noise reduction on a few of the clips.
Optimize--Full.
I get things that say 'error -41' etc. but I googled this and nothing came up as to what that error code means.
Is the amount of free space I have on my Mac a possible problem as well? I have 40 GB available. I tried moving all of the rejected clips to the trash and an error came up saying not enough space to delete.
Can I uninstall '11 and go back to using '09??

Hi
Error -41   mFulErr  Memory full (open) or file won't fit (load)
So if You've really got 40Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk - Others DO NOT count as neither iDVD or Mac OS can use space there for it's temp files.
Then I would close down Mac even disconnect Mains - Then re-start it and see if it got's it's memory right.
Else
• Audio from iTunes - use to give me problems - so I do - in iTunes
• collect the needed audio into a new PlayList
• Burn this out as an Audio-CD (.aiff) - NOT .mp3
• Use thge files on this CD in movie projects
Works for me.

Who can help me, then I cann't find everything about this in any forum?

    Hi
Can be a problem that get multiplied and visible when iDVD encode for DVD.
    A. See if problem can be isolated to a single frame in the movie and re-import this clip and see if it's better
    B. When free space on Start-Up hard disk goes low - strange things like this might occure. I never go under 25Gb free space on this Start-Up Mac OS hard disk !
    C. Does this problem arises what ever encoding quality You use ?

You will get better results if you use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option and then drag the movie from the Movies pane of the Media Browser in iDVD onto the menu window.
Also I suggest you use this workflow which I learned from Bengt:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Parts of my iMovie freeze (but the sound continues) once exported to iDVD

After completing a movie on iMovie, I have exported it to iDVD and 'Movie' formats then burned them to disk, but both movies freeze in exactly the same place whilst the audio runs through as normal.
When I play them in imovie they run as normal.
    Why is this?

    Some possibilities:
Check out this thread for a possible solution: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7305234&#7305234 Perhaps renaming the file would help.
I don't know if ithis has an effect on the file, but why is it saved in documents rather than music or movies?
Also, are you using iTunes to convert the file to .aiff? Here is the procedure from iTunes help:
*Choosing AIFF and WAV custom import settings*
If you use AIFF or WAV encoding, you can use custom settings for greater control over the quality and size of imported files.
To choose AIFF and WAV import settings:
    1. Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Advanced, and then click Importing.
    2. Choose AIFF Encoder or WAV Encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu.
    3. Choose Custom from the Setting pop-up menu.
    4. In the dialog that appears, choose settings:
Sample Rate: The number of times per second the music waveforms are captured digitally. The higher the sample rate, the higher the quality and the larger the file size. Don't choose a sample rate higher than the rate used to store the music originally or you'll waste space. CD quality, for example, is 44.100 kHz, so choosing a higher rate when you're encoding from a CD is unnecessary. In general, the best choice is Auto, which uses the same rate as the original music.
Sample Size: The number of bits used to store each sample taken as the music is encoded. The higher the sample size, the better the quality and the larger the file size.
Channels: If you don't have stereo speakers or if your audio files are monaural (mono files are about half the size of stereo files), choose Mono. If you'll be listening through headphones or a stereo system, choose Stereo or Auto. Auto converts monaural tracks into mono files and stereo tracks into stereo files.

  • Is it better to export an iMovie project as QT and use Toast to burn a DVD for general use or to export to iDVD and burn VD from there?  Why?

Is it better to export an iMovie project as QT and use Toast to burn a DVD for general use -  or to export iMovie project to iDVD and burn DVD from there?  Why?

Toast probably maintains better quality if you are just doing simple conversion direct from your camera straight into Toast and then to DVD. There's a lot less transcoding steps and loss of quality in that direct to DVD disk creation in Toast. However, having said that,...There's good arguments probably for both.
What I've seen promoted most often (as most people don't have Toast or aren't motivated to buy it) is to Share to Media Browser (choose the Large size option) and then from inside iDVD click the Media Button and the Movies button to find the project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser window. Drag that project into your iDVD project and burn the disk.

  • I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external drive.  I change the kind to "original" but when I view the video from the external drive once exported, the sound and picture are distorted.

I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external hard drive.  I have tried to export from iphoto with changing kind to "original" but when I open the video from the external drive the quality is effected.  I have also tried copying the video to my desktop and then dragging and dropping onto the drive...same problem. Any suggestions?  I would like to save everything to my external drive so that I can delete all of iphoto library and then reimport to correct a few things.

The file sizes are identical.  In the finder I did a search for all .mov files.  Then when they came up, I went through them and named each one so that they would be easier to find.  I am a new mac user and am used to windows.  I realized later that I should not have done this....with a mac files should be named within iphoto app...not finder....When I went to open the videos in iphoto, it wouldn't allow me.  I had to go into finder, copy to desktop and reimport into iphoto.  Then the videos worked again.  However, I had the problem with the poor video quality when copied to external drive before that.  Actually the first problem I had was when I copied to ext drive...videos were copying as an image...so I learned that you have to change "kind" to original before exporting....then that problem was solved...now they are videos, not images but not of a great quality.  Skips, sound and images are not in sync...etc...

  • IMovie 2 export problem

I'm trying to convert a friend's VHS tape to a DVD. The tape is in bad shape but there is enough still intact to make my attempt to preserve it worth my time.
I've successfully digitized the original video into iMovie. The individual clips of the 45 minutes I recorded play successfully while I view them via iMovie's timeline.
    So far so good.
Next I exported the movie choosing "Export for iDVD" from the Export menu option.
iMovie created a .MOV file for me that looks fine from the information Finder can give me.
So I double-clicked on the .MOV file to verify that the contents of the file were OK too.
After a few seconds (ranging from 5 to 43 based on multiple tries), the movie stops playing and my Mac freezes - except for the mouse. I can move the cursor around the screen but everything else in th UI is unresponsive.
Any suggestions on what I can do to get iMovie to create a .MOV file that "works"?
    Gary

What usually works for me is to export the iMovie as Quicktime, Full Quality. I usually specify to have it created on my desktop so I can find it, and I give it the same name as the original iMovie, but append QT to the name.
This gives a single clip movie. You will need to quit your iMovie, and then create a new iMovie project. Be sure to name it so that you know it is the second version. Drag this qt clip into it. Be patient. It can take time in iM2. In later versions, you can have more than one iMovie project open at the same time, but not in iM2.
After you have the qt version in a new movie project, check to see that it plays properly. If you had chapter markers in the original iMovie, you will need to make them again. Also, check the end of the movie....sometimes the qt version will have some 'snow' for several seconds at the end. You probably want to move the cursor to the spot just before that starts and crop off the unwanted end. Close iMovie.
Next, open iDVD and create a new project. Instead of sending your iMovie by 'exporting to iDVD' just drag it into iDVD's main screen.
You should now see your movie in iDVD, and can burn your project.
    Good luck.
Post back if the above does not help.

  • Audio problems after burn

I've burned my DVD and the audio works fine throughout with the exception of 2 keynote slideshows I put on the disc. I exported these slideshows as quicktimes through keynote, and the video works fine, however the sound doesn't show up. When you do this with keynote, it seperates the movie into a video and "soundtrack" file. The problem may come from this, however in the preview in iDVD the sound is there. Now I've only got iDVD 5 and I had to save the dvd as a disc image and then burn it to a disc with my third party burner. Should I try the disc image again or should I try and reformat these quicktime (movie) files
    Thanks everyone

    Hi tyler:
Welcoem! Sorry to burden you with this reading, but unless you are a member you couldn't get to this link.
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060125080748519
"If you make a presentation which has a background track which plays throughout the presentation (as opposed to per-slide), KeyNote exports it as two Quicktime movies. One contains the movie of the slides (chapter marked). The other contains the soundtrack (and it's named moviename_soundtrack.mov). The first movie references the other, so that they can play synchronously. However iDVD does not import the soundtrack. If you check the asset list, you'll see that it assumes the soundtrack is in the main movie. To make matters more confusing, playing the movie in iDVD works fine. That's because the DVD simulation uses Quicktime to do the playing, and it does the right thing. However, iDVD's failure to recognize the linked movie causes another bug which caused me no end of grief. When viewing a chapter listing page which contains thumbnails, the soundtrack plays! Furthermore, it plays once for each thumbnail. Of course they are slightly out of sync, and the result is incredibly weird. It even plays the soundtrack while it's encoding the chapter sections! Again, the problem is that QuickTime sees the reference, and although iDVD is presumably telling QuickTime not to play the audio track, it doesn't know that QuickTime is playing the linked audio track."
"I attempted to work around this problem by directly editing the iDVD project plist file and changing the audio soundtrack to point at the correct movie. That sort of worked, but then ran up against the way iDVD does presentations. After each slide is presented, the movie 'stops' on that page. You have to press play to go to the next page. Since it stops, the music stops also. So you end up with a soundtrack that is tied to the presentation, rather than one which plays independently. That makes me believe that a fix may be a while in coming, since it's probably going to require redesigning how iDVD creates presentations. However at the very least, iDVD needs to detect linked QuickTime files and handle them correctly."

  • 24P Audio Problem on burned Disc

I have an asset that was shot and compressed at 23.98. When I bring it in to Studio Pro 4 it plays fine ... audio is synced and all is good. (Although, the inspector says it is a 29.97 file ... I assume this isn't an issue though ... I can confirm that it is compressed at the correct fps.)
Anyway, once I burn the disc the audio seams a hair out of sync with the piece when played on external DVD players ... confirmed on multiple DVD decks. Maddening! Lips don't quite match. What in the heck am I doing wrong?!?!
    Thoughts anyone?

Is the audio lagging or in advance right off the bat, and remaining at the same rate of missmatch throughout, or is it slowly going out of sync?
Is the audio AIFF or AC3?
If AIFF, this may be the problem even though the format is in the DVD spec.
Are you viewing on a consumer large screen (42" or larger) LCD or Plasma?
Some displays without lip sync adjustability built-in will pass the audio milliseconds before the video (always before, not after).
Improper lip sync drives me crazy watching network TV.
( and a few commercial DVDs as well)
    The standard is too loose.
I use a Felston DD540 to correct the audio on some channels.

The only other thing I can suggest is to use the Repair option for iTunes.
Download the iTunes programme (do not uninstall your current iTunes) and then "install" the new copy. At some stage you should see an option to "install" or "Repair". Take the Repair option.
Once you've done that, if you still have a problem, I don't know what else to suggest, except to search through the discussions to see if anyone else has had the problem and managed to fix it.
