Audio synch problem from 24 to 29.97

I am working for a tv show that is having a major audio synch problem.
We send our mix to an external sound house for our pro-tools mix. They request the file to be 29.97, though our timeline is 24. In turn, we export a 24 time line, re-import to an 29.97 timeline and than re-export at 29.97 with a time code burn. They export the mix, using a sound compressor that converts the mix to a 24 fps synch, we send them a 24 frame export that they can check it againest on their end in Final Cut Pro. For them, both the opening and end two-pop lines up. When we recieve the mix back however, and bring it onto our timeline, it is always 24 frames ahead of the picture. We can't fiugre out why.
I know this all sound very confusing.
Below is our export and timeline settings:
OUR TIME-LINE\EXPORT SETTINGS:
1st Time Line:
FS: 1280x1080
FPS: 24
Compressor: DVCPRO HD 1080i60
Aud Rate: 48.0 KHz
Aud Format: 32-bit Floating Point
1st Export:
FPS: 24
DV\DVCPRO - NTSC
Compressor: DVCPRO HD 1080i60
Aud Rate: 48.0 KHz
Aud Format: 32-bit Floating Point
Data Rate: 2.9MB/sec
2nd Time Line:
FPS: 29.97
Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Aud Rate: 48.0 KHz
Aud Format: 32-bit Floating Point
2nd Export:
FPS: 29.97
Compressor: DV\DVCPRO - NTSC
Aud Rate: 48.0 KHz
Aud Format: 16-bit Integer
Data Rate: 3.6 MB/sec
AUDIO MIX SETTINGS:
Data Rate: 140.6 K/sec
Aud Rate: 48.0 KHz
Aud Format: 24-bit Integer
Total Out: The audio is exactly 24 frames ahead of the video by the end of the clip
We shot on a Panasonic HDX900
Can anybody think why this might be happening?

ProTools mixes 24fps...and 23.98, which SHOULD be the case here. There is NO REASON why they should want a 29.97 mix, nor should they mix at that rate...because you are not working at that rate nor delivering that rate...are you?
Your sequence settings confuse me. DVCPRO HD 1080i60 runs at 59.94. You can get it to 23.98 with a little work...but you indicate 24fps. Is that SOLID 24fps? Not 23.98? If so...that is a major issue. You should not be working at 24fps. 23.98 is the frame rate...
Still...if you are working at 23.98 and delivering a 23.98 master, the audio guy needs to mix at 23.98. ProTools is capable of 23.98. If they can't do that, then I'd suggest finding another mixer.

  • AUDIO SYNCH PROBLEMS

I have never had an audio synch problem 'til now. I am running 10.5.7 on a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB ram, 24" imac.
    iMovie 6.0.4
I have a 50 minute heavily edited project with many transitions, etc.. I have no problem with the footage downloaded from my Sony HD camcorder. I even saved many individual frames as pictures and changed them to the beat of the music in the timeline and all worked perfectly. BUT, my problem is with the "video trailers" I slipped into the timeline. The audio slips when I play back in the timeline AND when burned to DVD. BUT, it does not slip in the same place every time I preview it. If I scrub the playhead back over some of the bad scenes and play them again, they are in synch. IT KEEPS CHANGING..... When I export to a desktop movie to review - the synch problem is there and some of the audio is missing. This only happens on "movie trailers" I have downloaded.
I can't figure out why it keeps changing in the timeline and then correcting itself when I back up and play it over again. I AM GOING CRAZY........
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Wally

Thanks for the reply but my problem is not with iDVD - it is with iMovie - when I add "trailers" to it they go in and out of synch at different places everytime I review it before moving on. When I scrub back over the problem area and then play again, they are perfect for one time and then I try again and they are not synched. The problem is in iMovie.
    Thanks,
    Wally

  • Audio synch problem

I have a 1 1/2 hr program in HDV that I'm having audio synch problems with during export. All my frame rates for my clips are the same as well as my audio sampling rates. It will start fine, then be slightly off and by the end of the program that audio is behind by about 3 seconds. I've tried all formats, reference file, self-contained, Anamorphic DV and still no luck. Any ideas?

Exporting Quicktime movie...current settings, video and audio....just uncompressed right out of FCP.

  • Audio Synch Problem Exporting From imovie 6

I have a created a large imovie project in imovie 6 using pictures and imported video.  The project uses a lot of extracted audio voice overs on top of the photos.
While trying to export the video to quicktime or idvd, the audio gets out of synch at various points.  I have tried exporting it many times using a variety of different options, and the audio remains out of synch, sometimes in different places with each export.  Lastly, I have extracted the audio from the video clips for some of the more problematic portions of the project, but that has not proven successful.
The odd thing is that the movie plays perfectly while in imovie.
Any suggestions as to how to correct this issue?

    Hi
    Tedious situation.
To avoid this I'm kind of strict in Audio in two ways
    A
    • Material used if video is in same frame per minute - else I use JES_Deinterlacer to convert all to one standard. I use PAL = 25fps - one of my Cameras records ONLY in 30fps - (some people records in 24fps - to get a movie feel - I never)
So keeping the fps from Camera to (in my cases) DVD - gives a supperior result
    B
    • I'm strict in the kind of Audio formats I use - ONLY .aiff (or from miniDV tape Cameras) AND THEN 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (still .aiff as on normal CDs) and here 44.1kHz
If Camera is set to record in LP-mode or 12-bit Audio - Then I use an external Audio Editor to get this right
If from iTunes - I never use this directly - BUT - collect needed audio into a New PlayList - BURN THIS as a Standard Audio-CD (NO .mp3 - but .aiff here too) and then use the files on this CD in my movie project's in iMovie HD6 or FinalCut any varsion (or if forced to - iMovie'11)
    Else read this
    Audio Sync problems
    • 12.bit - should be 16.-bit (from miniDV tape - set Camera right)
Avoid recording in LP-mode on miniDV tape. This tape must be play-backed by same Camera. When Camera dies
so does the video material in worst case.
    • .mp3, .avi etc strange file formats - should be converted to .aiff 48kHz 16-bit
    • in iMovie (up to HD6) - do - Extract Audio - it most often helps
    • from iTunes - collect into a PlayList then Export out as an Audio-CD (not .mp3) and use the files on this (.aiff 44.1kHz)
    • There seems to be a problem with slow-down resp speed-up. Has to be in specific steps as 25% 50% 150% 200%
    else problems will arise
    • Audio problems when transitions is in use - especially iMovie HD/HD6
    a. Select video clips
    b. Extract Audio (Advance menu/Extract Audio)
    c. Now apply transition
    d. eventually fine-tune end and start of extracted audio clips

  • Strange Audio Synch problem

I've been supplied with a movie (from an HD master) in .mpg format (for ease of size) to which I need to synch an audio track for a Blu-ray release.
When I open the file in MPEG Streamclip it gives the frame rate as 23.976. However, when I import this same clip into FCP it gives the vid rate at 25fps, with no audio (but it's there if I open it in Quicktime).
If I convert the .mpg to ProRes I the get the audio in FCP, but the running time is altered - even though I've not changed anything, making it useless to synch to.
    Example:
    .mpg file = 01:35:49:20
ProRes conversion via MPEG Streamclip = 01:35:44:00
I've also been supplied the same file at 25fps (for the DVD release). The same problems occur with this too.
So my question is, how do I synch a new audio track to the movie and ensure everything is kept in synch?
Would I be better off exporting from MPEG Streamclip to another format?

When you open this file up in Quicktime, what does it say the frame rate is? Because it sounds like it is 25fps, so you need to set MPEG STREAMCLIP to convert it to 25fps.

  • Audio exporting problems: from FCP to protool/STP and back again

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final Cut Pro sound export for mastering.....sync problem
    Hey,
I'm editing a 30 minute film and I have done most of the sound edit in FCP and Soundtrack pro and I want to now bring all the sound into pro tools to master the sound but every time i export sound into pro tools it seems to stretch by two or three seconds.
I have tried OMF, AIFF, XML, and Quicktime audio file sut to no avail!!!!
There are 50 tracks in the file so it is quiet large. It's not that there are handles of the file also as when I sync the file with the audio track with the video it syncs in one place but it is still out of sync in another.........It's as if the audio has been stretched!?!
If anyone has any advice it'd be much appreciated
    Keith

Check the timecode rate and sync options in Protools. It sounds like a timecode or samplerate mismatch.
Especially note that 23.976fps OMFs from FCP (probably STP as well) show up in Protools as 24fps sessions. Change the PTs timecode to 23.976 to realign.

  • 12 bit audio synch issues

Hey all. I have a queation regarding 12 bit audio synch problems. I have digitized a tape recorded with 12 bit audio and am just now coming into video/audio synch issues and was wondering if anyone might have a workflow suggestion. Soecific questions are -
1 - Can I export the troubled clips to quicktime/ resample them at 16 bit and reimport?
2 - Some of the clips I already have edited and are in synch, do I need to correct them as well or will final cut do that on export?
3 - If I get a 12 bit/16 bit mixed bag on my timeline, can I export the mix to 2 track and convert before exporting it to compression?
ANy suggestions on how to work through this would be appreciated. I seem to have a lot of people coming to me with this setting and would like to know of any viable workflow solutions.
    Thanks

    1. Yes. Quicktime Pro, iTunes or third party audio editing software such as Peak can resample to 48khz/ 16 bit.
    2. It would be best if you can get everything in the timeline to be 48khz/16 bit.
    3. See #2.
Dope slap these fools who bring you 32khz stuff. Charge them MUCHO extra for your time.

  • IMovie and MD audio synch drift problem

I've got a movie of a basketball game. I recorded voice over commentary on a Minidisc player, imported it into iMovie and synched it with the video. The commentary was synched perfectly, from beginning to end. I split the video clip of the game where the first basket was scored, and I used 'Music Video' titles to keep running stats on the screen, which splits the movie into 10 second (or shorter) clips, but shouldn't have any impact on it's length or alter the position of the video in the timeline (which I locked the audio to anyway when I synched it). Well, once I started doing the titles, the video only stays in synch for the first 10 minutes and then starts to drift. By the end of the 40 minute game it is out of synch by almost 5 seconds. Any ideas?

The audio was synchronized. I used this method because the voice over was recorded long after the original footage had been shot and imported into iMovie for my project. I figured out the problem was that to keep the music video stats onscreen continuously by making numerous 10 second clips, Imovie is consuming at least a frame or two to do so, and over the course of the game that led to the voiceover falling out of synch. I decided instead to just have 1 title briefly appear after each play the subject player makes....few enough title clips, the audio remained synched no problem. Thanks for your suggestions!

I reloaded iTunes 10 (64 bit) successfully, but the problem remains the same.
    Any suggestions?

I looked in the folder from which I want to synch photos, but there is no such thing as an "ipod photo cache" in that folder, or sub-folders, as suggested in the link which you were nice enough to provide.
I have also tried removing photos from my iPad2 Photos App, and "iTunes has stopped working" shows up  again as soon as I click on the "Synch photos from" button.

  • Please help!! Problem synching pictures from Laptop to iPhone4????

Hey guys, I am new to this so I would really appreciate anyones help very much! I just bought a brand new iPhone4 and last year a brand new Toshiba laptop. I dont know a great deal about how Itunes works but I know the basics. I downloaded all my apps and everything using my iPhone and then when I plugged my phone into the laptop it synched all of my songs, photos, apps etc into folders in Itunes. Anyway, basically what i want to do is synch photos from my pictures folder and put them into my iphone however, when i go in to do so and select the folder to synch the message i recieve says "are u sure u want to remove 53 apps from your iPhone"?? and i really dont understand why? When i plug my phone in and click on the icon in itunes it brings up my phone and shows all the content that is currently on it but when i click on apps, all of my apps that are displayed (picture that shows your iphone) dissapear and they are all in the left hand box for me to drag over into the phone one by one? I dont want to remove them as i already have them how i like them into sorted folders and i really want to know how i can leave my apps how they are and stop this message saying do i want to remove my apps everytime i synch anything? I am not able to do any synching because of this as it will cause me to lose everything? I feel like it has something to do with when i clicked on transfer purchased items into itunes because before i did this all my apps didnt show up in the left hand column area for me to drag into my phone - but i dont know how to delete them from that area and keep my apps how they are - and just be able to synch anything else as i need to? I am sorry this is all over the place but i am finding it hard trying to explain what i mean but i am really really hoping someone might know what i can do to fix this.. I would appreciate anyones help very very much! Thanks heaps! : ) Jamo.

Did you get a dialog to convert the video first before copying? If yes, and you confirmed, encoding long videos could take ages on weak computer, so perhaps this is not an issue at all..
The problem with this conversion is that not all formats are readable by default Movies app in the phone, so it asks you to convert it before the transfer "on-the-fly". This takes some time (long if it is some full movie). But if you use another player, like MXVideo for example, you don't really need to convert it, and the transfer will then go very fast (just copying).
I thought it is the driver issue, because there is such problem too (Media Go acts more like a snail than a media manager, and it happens with PCC active simultaneously).
When everything have failed already, try to read the manual.

  • Audio and video synch problems

Whether I am recording a video or in a live chat, the audio is off from the video. Customer Support said to just try some of the different compression options. I tried that, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to the forum,
Lot of users have a Blue Yeti, even the evangelists do use them. Where is the problem, because to me it is not clear if it is linked with the micro or with your work flow.
When I'm creating a video demo I will do a temporary narration during the capture process, so that the timing is about correct for the video. It helps if you have some sort of script ready at that time. Then I will do the proper voice over (mostly using Audition) and replace the temporary narration by the final one. Perhaps some more sync is needed, but often I have to edit the video demo because I want to insert static objects, split video, etc. Here is an example of such a video:

  • Audio sync problem with videos imported from iPod Touch

I have an iPod Touch 4th Generation that I used to shoot video at a family birthday party. When I imported the footage into iMovie '11, the audio is not in sync with the video (video is about two seconds behind audio) and there is only the left channel of audio. I verified that the video on the iPod plays just fine--no audio sync problem, both left and right channels work. I just upgraded to iOS 5 on the iPod Touch. The iMac is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
As a workaround, I can import the video into iPhoto instead. When I play the video in iPhoto, there are no audio sync problems and both channels of audio can be heard. I have imported other iPod Touch videos successfully into iMovie '11 in the past few months, but this has been the first time these problems have occurred. Any help would be appreciated.

Premiere cannot handle clips with variable framerate.
Your converted clips need to have constant framerate.
Otherwise use a converter like Handbrake.

  • Audio synchronization problem in Elements 7

The audio in my Elements project has a background hum. So I exported the audio, removed the hum in Audacity, and saved the new audio as a wav file. Then I deleted the original audio track and replaced it with the cleaned up version. But now the audio doesn't synch with the video.
Since the project contains many clips, some of which have been moved within the project, I thought about exporting the audio one clip at a time. But I can't find a way of doing that. Even when I unlink the audio and video, select only the audio clip, choose work area only, and try to export the clip, I still get the audio for the entire project.
Ultimately, I want to get the cleaned up audio synched with the video. Any ideas??

You must change the in and out points on the Work Area Bar - this is not the same as selecting the clip on the timeline.
The quickest way to set the WAB is to place the CTI (the play line) to the start and press [Alt] plus left facing square bracket ( the [ key ). Place the CTI at the end and press [Alt] plus right facing square bracket ( the ] key ).
In the following image the WAB is set to the area I want to export. The CTI is nowhere to be seen (it does not have to be) and the clip covered by the WAB is not selected (it doesn't have to be). Only the area covered by the WAB is important.
I've tested this in PRE7 and it works fine. If it does not work for you try re-installing PRE7. If the problem remains you may need to go to Adobe's Technical Support.

  • Audio synch drifting in music video

    Hello-
I just sat down this morning to begin editing a music video shot in DVCPRO HD @ 24fps. The video is performance-based, and, at the shoot, the artists played along to the song from their album (the song was played from a CD and run through a PA) so that all the footage could be synched up to the track in editing.
However, when I lay the audio track down with a take from the shoot, the audio track (imported from their album and converted into AIFF format) gradually loses synch with the video. I've edited several music videos using this same format (the same cameras, even) and have never encountered this problem. The audio settings for the captured video and the audio from the CD match (48khz, 16 bit).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

the issue was that the synch track was played from a CD (on an older cd player, which may or may not have contributed to the problem). The track from the cd fell out of synch with the AIFF as the song progressed, I assume due to the fact that the CD is physically spinning, creating a variable on how fast the data can be read from it (even though there was no discernible difference in speed to my ears or to the artists who wrote and recorded the song) . So, I ended up running that same CD player into my computer and importing the track from the player in real time, which synced up perfectly.

  • HDV audio synch error upon capture

I'm having issues with audio synch capture issues.
I set the project settings for HDV 1080i30(60i) - I accepted the defaults of preset, I specified Canon in Device Control
I captured two clips...each ~ 20 minutes in length.  Both have audio synch issues.
Both clips captured footage that included a blank spot(s) in the tape...ie. the timecode was reset when I removed the tape from the camcorder during the trip.
Both captured clips have odd bright red video footage inserted for a second or two (is that an error signal?) in various places.
Both show the following error message:
F;\Video\Project1\Clip 02.mgegError in MPEG stream detected around frame 3502
(there are ~20 such error messages in the Events panel)
    Suggestions?
    Thanks, in advance.

    Thanks for your continued advice.
Doing the resiz in camera makes a lot of sense.  My only concern is not wanting to do my edits and titling for a large project twice (i.e. once for DVD version and later for a BR version).  I know there's some feature of Prem. that allows substitute clips...work on low-res & replace with high-res...but I'm a rookie on that front.  Is there a term for that?
As mentioned earlier, I was willing to try doing a manual capture process in order to work around the timecode breaks.  But I'm running into issues, again.  The first clip ~2 minutes - no problem.  The second clip ~35 minutes - big problems...error reports of dropped frames...must be on portions of the tape other than my timecode breaks.  Also, the thing can't complete the Conforming Clip 02b.mpeg process.  It starts...makes progress...grinds to a halt mid-way...and renders Prem "Non Responsive".
It's feeling like this HDV full res process has lots of gotcha's.  I'm wondering how folks get through it.
