Audio through External Display's Speakers. MD port to HDMI

Hi all
I have been trying to figure out how to do a simple thing like play audio through my new Samsung 27" monitor to use with my 15" MacBook Pro (late 2008 unibody model).
The monitor is a Samsung S27B750V. It is connected with a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable, which supports Audio.
I cannot seem to find a way to play the audio through my monitor's speakers.
My monitor will not appear in the Device output list on the Sound settings box.
Also, I have tried using the included seperate audio cable connecting the headphone socket to the monitor's audio input, but still no sound.
ANY suggestions will be most welcome!
Many Thanks

I see thanks- I never thought the mini Display port would have been different on my model.
I am still trying to use the audio cable provided with the display, through the MacBook headphone socket into the monitor's audio input, and that also is not seeming to work?
Should my device appear in the audio Device output list on the Sound settings box?

  • Does my MacBook passes audio through Mini Display Port or not?

I recently bought a Mini DisplayPort > HDMI adapter in order to display my MacBook on my TV. Other users of the same adapter publicly stated that they got video AND audio out, but I got only video.
I've been searching this online for two days now and I still don't know why (I even searched this support forum, but I must admit that I got a little lost and decided to write my own topic). All I discovered was that some MacBooks have this capacity (to port audio along with video through Mini DisplayPort) and others don't.
I'm using a white MacBook unibody bought new and latest on late 2009. It's the first model with multitouch trackpad and without FireWire port. Its model name is "MacBook 6,1", I guess.
Does anybody know for sure if It CAN, in fact deliver audio+video through the Mini DisplayPort if I'm using a compatible HDMI adapter?
    Thanks.

These models pass audio through the display port:
iMac (Late 2009), MacBook Pro (Mid 2010), MacBook (Mid 2010), and Mac mini (Mid 2010) supply multichannel audio (up to 8 channels) and video signals over Mini DisplayPort. To connect your television or other HDMI devices to your Mac, use select third-party Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters that conform to the VESA v1.1a DisplayPort Interoperability Guidelines. The following adapters adhere to these standards:
    - Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support
    - Griffin Video Display Converter (Mini DisplayPort to HDMI and DVI)

  • No Audio on External Display Vista

OK, quick back-story. I posted this topic way back in April in another area, but no replies. It got archived, so I re-posted it. A user suggested I come here (makes sense, right?), so here I am, re-posting my thread for the third time. Below is a straight copy/paste of the original thread. I'd LOVE to get this problem sorted out, because I just picked up L4D - even though I have the 360 version - for the soon-to-come Shaun of the Dead and Raccoon City mods:
I just got a Toslink to Mini M/M from Monoprice (3.5mm jack to optical), and I have the Mini-DP to HDMI converter as well. I'm running Bootcamp with Vista, and I'm using my TV as an external display.
I'm trying to play Gears of War on the TV. The picture is fine, but the audio is the problem...there is none. I tried having the toslink cable and HDMI cable plugged into the Mac and into my Psyclone HDMI switch, then run that out to my stereo system.
    No dice.
Took the HDMI cable, ran it directly into the TV, and had an digital audio cable running from the TV to the switch.
    No bueno.
Took the digital audio cable out of the TV and turned the TV speakers on.
    Nothing.
I can't get any form of audio coming from the TV. I have the displays mirrored, with GoW window on the TV and everything else on the MBP. There isn't audio coming from the MBP either.
    Does anyone have a solution?
BTW, I've thought of using VMWare Fusion, but I don't know if the whole Unity thing will allow a game installed on Windows to be opened and run properly on OS X.

I think w/the early models, yes, you'll need to use that other cable from the headphone out jack.

  • Connecting MacBook through external display in Windows Boot Camp partition

Hello everyone! I recently installed Windows Vista Home Premium on my MacBook 320GB. My Mac Partition of the drive works perfect, and connects through Mini DVI-Video through composite cables and into my T.V. When I tried this in Windows, I had no luck whatsoever. yes, all the drivers are installed for my chipset, processor, keyboard, etc. Windows is updated as well through Microsoft, But not through the Apple Software Update because the download failed again to the Boot Camp update. How do I connect an external display(ex. Projector, T.V., anything that has composite input)? Yes, I know some of you will say, "Your first mistake was buying Vista", but thats not the problem here. Windows Vista works perfectly. When you connect an external display, it re-adjusts its screen resolution but does not appear on the external monitor. Is the Boot Camp Update the solution? Please Help!!!
That was a lot of writing!

I am using Vista on Macbook and when I connect my PC to my TV, lot of times, it hangs on me and a blue screen shows up with some errors and then it shut downs. I atleast do this 2-3 times and then finally it gets connected but there has to be a way where we can easily connect to TV without any issues. Any help guys?
Also I have noticed, my resolution on TV when I connect my macbook is 1900 x 1260 something... Is this related to resolutions?

  • No audio through external speakers

I'm finding a lot of solutions on this, but none that seem to work.  It all started when try to hook a guitar directly to my 2007 MBP for use in GarageBand.  We were getting some feedback, so we tried changing the input settings.  The levels on the track registers started going crazy (up down, up down) for no apparent reason, and then I had an error message about a Core Audio driver and a 10202 code, and then the visable audio level for the computer muted grey with a Ghostbusters looking icon underneath.
I repaired my disk permissions and reset my PRAM.  Resetting my PRAM unmuted the volume control and eliminated the Ghostbusters icon, and by all indications I should be getting sound.
I get no startup sound along with any periphial sounds, and I have no red light when a jack is plugged in.  All of my input/output settings seem to be correct (internal speakers for line out/built-in input for line in).  I no longer get any error codes when I open GarageBand or any other audio programs.  I am stumped, please don't say it's my logic board.  If it is, anybody got a line on a cheap one?
Thanks in advance, I'm strugglin with this one.

Have you checked your settings in the Audio Midi setup utility?

  • Skype audio through external interface

I'm currently running sound through an external audio interface (M-Audio Profire 2626). Before, everything was fine, but at the moment, Skype seems to be sending signal only to the left channel of the interface. All chat sounds, rings, and alerts are audible in the left channel only, but in a call, the other party comes through both speakers. So it's only alerts in the one speaker.
    What's happening here?

When it was working, what was different?  Was there a specific version of Skype that it was more compatible with?  Since it doesn't occur on other devices (as far as I'm able to test since I own no Firewire output devices) I can only assume the issue is driver/software related or a compatiblity issue over Firewire but I would really suspect translation software that's being used to get it work in Skype unless the drivers are native WDM-based (vs something like ASIO).  If you have other firewire ports you've never used you can always try those to see if the install of that device on that specific port changes anything.

  • Apple TV audio through interface and monitor speakers?

    Hi all,
See following pic of my setup...
    My question is as follows....
When Macbook is linked to tv via airplay, which is my normal setup as I produce music and use both screens, the sound output is set through Saffire audio interface and comes out the monitor speakers and all is good with the world, however, I want to be able to sit back and watch the apps on Apple TV as is shown on the big screen there ie. Netflix/NBA TV, but still using my computer soundcard and hence through the monitor speakers instead of it switching back to the TV sound.
    IS THIS POSSIBLE???
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Thanks for the response vazandrew. I've looked further into what you said and the solution is as follows;
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/eSynic%C2%AE-Digital-Optical-Coaxial-Converter/dp/B009ZR 7IB8/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_2
Ditial optical out to toslink audio converter, then out the converter to RCA/Jack etc.
Hope this helps anyone else with same question.

  • 27" iMac and two external displays -- using both TB ports best?

    Greetings to all.
Currently I have a 2011 Mac Mini to which is connected a 30" Dell display via a Dual Link DVI adapter, and another Dell 21" display via HDMI. I'm planning on getting the 27" iMac and want to check the best way to connect these two displays. While the 30" will still use the Dual Link DVI adapter, should I connect the 21" display via the iMac's second TB port, or via HDMI?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The iMac hasn't got a HDMI port, so you will have to connect your second monitor to your Thunderbolt port, using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter in order to be able to connect it to the computer

  • Thunderbolt to external display and speakers

what is the best or cheapest way to connect my audio and video from my ipad mini to an hd monitor and speakers?

Cheapest is Apple's Digital AV Adapter, or a third-party equivalent, and an appropriate 3.5mm stereo to whatever connector your speakers, if they're self-powered, or amplifer uses.
    Regards.

  • Combined audio & video from iMac mini DVI & headphone ports to HDMI to TV

I presently have my iMac connected to my Sony Bravia tv so that the video goes from the mini DVI port through a converter to HDMI to a 25 foot cable, a HDMI coupler and another 25 foot cable to the TV. The video quality is good since I use 24 AWG cables. The audio goes from the headphone port through a 50 foot 3.5 mm cable to a converter to RCA stereo cables to the tv. The audio quality is not very good with this setup and I would like to send the audio over the HDMI cable with the video so that I would have only a single cable over the 50 foot run and could use a HDMI wall plate for a neater installation. I am wondering whether anyone has tried this somewhat expensive solution to my kind of problem, and whether it worked. Atlona DVI + Digital Audio to HDMI Converter. Model: AT-DVID-HDMI

Not sure if it would work. The audio input is described as +audio (SPDIF) input+ which is not analog or the Toslink optical digital. SPDIF is a digital format, so you would need another converter. And since the video input is full DVI, you'd need a different adapter for the iMac's video output.
Considering the complexity, additional adapters, rather long travel length, and $199 price for the Atlona device, depending on what you want to show on the HDTV, you may want to consider an Apple TV. The older 40GB version is $149 at the Apple +Special Deals+ page. You can then stream your content wirelessly, and not have to worry about any cabling. But obviously, an Apple TV does not stream everything that that iMac can play, so it would only work if what you want to show is stuff you can play in iTunes. Plus you may want to see what Apple introduces at the 1/27 special event.
The iMac's audio output port doubles as an optical digital port, with a Toslink adapter, so if the Sony Bravia has optical digital input, you may be able to run a Toslink cable. I believe 50 feet is too long, so you would need some type repeater at the midway point.

  • How to connect an external display to MacBook Pro Retina using HDMI to VGA Adapter?

  • How do I get my Macbook Pro to detect an external display?

    Hi there.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro today.
Everything about it is wonderful, except:  When I plug an external display into the Thunderbolt port using a Minidisplay port to VGA adapter, it doesn't send a signal to the external monitor.  The screen on my Macbook will go blue for a second, and then the windows freeze.  The mouse will be movable for a bit (up to a minute), but nothing is clickable.  Strangely, it seems as though it's functioning as if there were a second monitor (I can move the mouse off-screen as though it's going over to another display).  But then the spinning rainbow wheel starts and never stops.  If I unplug the Minidisplay port to VGA adapter, the Macbook will snap back into professional mode and everything works again.
If I try to boot the computer up with the Minidisplay port to VGA adapter already pluged in, it simply won't boot up (I get a gray screen with an apple and nothing more).
I tried using gfxCardStatus set to "discreet only" and I still have this problem.  I tried to run a firmware update, but my comp seems to be entirely up-to-date already (just set it up today).
The monitor and adapter seem to be working fine, and function as an external display when pluged into the Mini-DVI port on my 2009 Macbook running Snow Leopard.
I guess my question is, what's causing this?  Is this an adapter problem?  Like, do I need a special adapter to use with a Thunderbolt port as opposed to the one I'm using which works when pluged into a Mini-DVI port?
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2
      Processor Name: Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz
      Number of Processors: 1
      Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
      L3 Cache: 4 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Boot ROM Version: MBP91.00D3.B08

The only thing that I can suggest is trying a different adapter - such as this one from Monoprice.
I don't know if that's the root of your problem, though. Does the external monitor have DVI? You could get a Thunderbolt to DVI adapter from Monoprice - here - and give that a shot.

  • No signal to external display

I'm having trouble with connecting my Macbook Pro to my Samsung TV (via HDMI) to use as an external display.  When I plug the HDMI cable into my laptop the screen flashes like it detects another display but then nothing changes and the TV still reads no signal.  I've connected the laptop to a different TV and it worked just fine.  I tried connecting a different laptop to the TV and that one didn't work either.  I've also connected an AppleTV to my Samsung (the one I'm having issues with) using the HDMI cable that I'm trying to connect the laptop with and that worked as well.  I've tried both the STB and DVI HDMI ports on the TV and neither of them work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    For more information:
    It's a late 2013 Retina 13" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.4.
The TV is a Samsung UN29F4000.

First, try resetting the parameter RAM:
Hold down keys CMD-Option-p-r on startup until you hear the second chime.

  • Problem Connecting external display

    I Have a MacBook Pro 13" from early 2011, 2.3ghz Core i5, 4Gb RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384mb with OSx 10.7.4 (11E53)
I'm having some trouble connecting external displays via the ThunderBolt port using a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter.
I have to go the settings -> Screens -> Detect Screens to connect or disconnect any kind of display.

    Not sure.
All I did was plug my dell monitor's cable into the mini display adapter and boom, it worked.
Is there any way you can validate that the monitor is working, and/or try this out on another display. Sounds like its either not compatible, or something is defective. (monitor, mini-display adapter, MPB)
