Audio too loud

It seems that setting my volume at 1 is loud enough and inside the applications I use (World of Warcraft etc.) I have to lower the master volume.
I don't know where to look to fool around with my amplification, audio output settings besides System preferences > Sound.
I am using an iMac 24 inch with internal speakers.

I believe one of the recent updates seemed to increase the volume levels dramatically to how they were oringially set - although others seems to be getting no sound at all after the update.
Probably not much help for you to fix it, but hopefully helps to understand why.

  • Mac audio TOO LOUD after rebooting Mac

After rebooting a PowerMac G4/500 (AGP) with Mac OS X 10.4.6 sounds too loud (as if it was at top highest volume) when playing audio files, even though the audio setting (keyboard audio keys) is set to only one to three points. Just clicking such keyboard audio buttons (to lower or even increase it) fixes it and the audio returns to its correct volume. What is going on? This is driving me nuts!
    Thanks.

    Justin,
Thanks. I have done as indicated, shut down and booted, yet the issue persists. For instance, if I go to iTunes and play a song, it plays very loud, yet the audio is set at a single point. I can see it clicking the keyboard audio keys. As said, once I click any of such keys (increase or reduce volume any amount) the audio returns to its normal volume until the next time that I boot the Mac. This is a 100% consistent issue. Weird.

  • Iphone 5c audio too loud

I recently bought a headset BHS-930 by phaiser and the audio is way too loud whenever I try to play anything and there's no way to adjust it even at 1 on the iPhone 5c it's I can hear whatever I'm playing without even having the earpiece in my ear. This only happens when using it with my iPhone if I pair it with my laptop the volume level is fine but when I pair it with my phone the volume is so loud anyone sitting near me can listen to whatever is coming out of the earpiece. Is there anyway to fix this?

I would've done that if it was too loud for more then just the iPhone. I can pair it up with my laptop and the levels are fine, it's just on my iPhone that it too loud.

You may try to reset your phone software using the Nokia Software Recovery Tool. To download and guidance on how to use the application, you may check this link. Hope this helps.

  • Audio too loud on my MacBook Air!

So, I just purchased my MacBook Air from Best Buy (as an Open Item since there was an awesome markdown plus coupon markdown on top of that, and 18 months financing is pretty cool too).  My problem is that the sound is extremely loud on this system, especially when I have headphones plugged in.  I have the master volume at the 4-5 level (out of 16, mind you), and headphones can only be set on 1 (or if using the gradual shift with Shift+Option+Vol Up/Down it would be more like .5).  If I have it set to full volume, the speakers are blaring (and I'm sure I'd be permanently deaf if I tried that with headphones on).  This is my first Apple laptop, and I don't have this issue with my iMac (but I've got a pretty decent set of external speakers hooked up to that, so if there is an issue I don't notice it).
I tried fiddling with the sound in the System Preferences, but all I have access to is the Alert Volume slider and the Output Volume slider (which I found is the same as using the volume hot keys).  And for the Output preferences tab, I can select the headphones, but all it gives me is a balance slider, no individual volume control for them.
I've been googling and searching this issue in this Support Forum, but most of what I'm finding is about the system having the opposite problem (extremely low audio), and the few that seem to have the same problem as I do aren't really getting a definitive answer.  I thought I saw one where somebody had this problem and took it into an Apple store, where they popped the laptop open and noticed that something wasn't hooked up correctly (wires hooked up wrong, or something like that).  But I can't find that particular thread anymore, so I'm a bit uncertain on that - anybody know where that thread is and can I have a link?
I'm wondering if this particular MacBook Air was returned because of this sound issue.  Should I take my MacBook Air in to get it looked at?   And if so, should I just go into a full Apple store rather than the Geek Squad (which is more PC oriented)? I did purchase a Geek Squad Black Tie plan, mostly for the accidental coverage.  (I'm a klutz).

I think I might have figured out why the volume is bothering me.
On my iMac, I have a decent set of Creative external speakers hooked up and it has an external volume/bass controler w/ headphone jack.  I've set up the volume on the speakers to a comfortable level, and use the iMac internal sound control to do minor editing - which is normally set around 11 out of the 16 "notches" and that way I can increase/decrease w/o fiddling with my Creative volume control.
But when I unplug those speakers out of my iMac, I end up with the insane volume that I'm not used to (I jumped when the sound played and had to mute it.  XD  I think I should start video logging my troubleshooting for the lulz.)  I also figured out that the system remembers the sound levels when you plug/unplug headphones/external speakers.  Very handy.  :3
So, I'm just used to having a fine tuned control over my sound, and when I started playing on my MBAir, I thought something was wrong.  I'm probably just going to go get myself a really good set of headphones that have a volume control on them so I can get the same results I get from my iMac.
Thanks for the help!  <3  I'll let y'all know if I run into anymore problems!

  • Backround audio too loud for the Smithsonian Channel

I'm not sure if this is something Comcast has a hand in, but for the Smithsonian Channel, the background music is louder than the main audio. Watching Aerial America is nearly impossible since you can hardly hear what the guy was saying.

  • Background audio too loud in QuickTime Pro export

I created a movie in QT Pro 7.6.6 with a background audio track and voiceover for each photo. It sounds great in QT Pro, but when I export it (mov and wmv), the background music drowns out the voiceover. I am desperate to finish this for my niece for her dad for Fathers Day. Need to get in the mail today! Any help would be greatly apprciated. Thanks.

Not sure what work flow you were using to change relative volume of individual tracks but suspect any export action would automatically force a "reset" of the audio levels/settings before flattening during export. A better approach would likely be to create the file using GarageBand which allows you to set relative audio levels for each audio track independently and then set the final level of the "master" audio track separately. You can also split and duck individual audio tracks and/or "rubberband" the master track if desired before the final export.

  • System Audio Too Loud On Reboot

Everything running well with Mountain Lion except one annoying issue. Whenever I reboot the system, the default audio volume changes to the maximum level. Is there a way to control this?

Some sound settings are stored in PRAM. Try resetting it.

  • Distorted Audio-Captured too loud through mixer

I have a video that has a man speaking and most of it is distorted. It sounds like he is mumbling. The problem occured because the audio was captured too loudly through the mixer. I have tried different filters but none have seemed to work. I have also done the tutorial mentioned on a lot of these discussions. If you have any idea of what to do please help me out.
    Thanks,
    Micah Wooten

If the audio was recorded that way to begin with then your pretty much screwed. You said it was "captured" too loudly. If that's the case then you could recapture.

I have a MEX-BT4000P Bluetooth Audio System.  The subwoofer is always way too loud, even when the volume is turned way down.  I need to know how I can reduce the bass for the subwoofer.
    Thx, Scott

Hi Scott! Are you using the rear speakers as subwoofer? If yes, you can adjust the Rear Bass Enhancer (page 34 of the manual).

  • Audio way too loud...it seems?

I imported a track into FCP however it seems significantly louder than my vox pops.
When I bed it down below my vox pops it seems to drown them out. I have lowered the tracks level to -32db which seems excessive, and on my meters its barely visible but it continues to be heard.
I usually have my backing audio at around -22 to -18 but this is just way too loud, not sure why this is or how to improve it without lowering the levels massively?
Should i go by the meters or my ears?Any help would be great

At what level are your vox pops sitting on the meters? They should be hovering around your reference level (usually -12 or -18dB).
If you've got very low level on your recorded audio, and you've then turned up the speaker volume to compensate then an imported CD track will be deafening.
First confirm that the vox pops are sitting at a sensible level on the meters (peaking at around 6-8dBs above your reference level) then adjust your speaker volume to be comfortable, then adjust the imported track's level so that it sounds right under the vox pops.

  • IMovie to iDVD--Video too dark, sound too loud--Help!

I created three iMovie projects for my son's swim team, then made a DVD using iDVD. It was fine when viewed in iDVD's preview, but when burned to the DVD-R the video was too dark and the sound was way too loud. This is footage taken on a Sony digital camcorder (DCR-TRV11).
I did the iDVD project by starting from scratch from within iDVD, then dragging the iMovie pieces and still images into the iDVD project. The iMovie pieces were prepared by using Share to make them into "full quality" .dv movies.
When I play the finished DVD on my iMac, there are no unusual problems with the video or audio. It looks and sounds like it did when played from the digital camcirder. But when played on both of my standalone DVD players + TVs, the video is too dark and the audio is much too loud.
Any idea why this is, and to fix it? I don't find a way to reduce the audio volume in iMovie. Maybe there is a workaround using the Relative Volume feature, but all my clips have a similar sound level. Any help will be appreciated.
    --Eric
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

when burned to the DVD-R the video was too dark
They is a VERY slight darkening during the MPG-2 compression process (see my pages Digital Video Color Bars Test at http://homepage.mac.com/profpixel/color_bars/colorbars.htm and iMovie HD and iDVD 5 Gray Patch Test at http://homepage.mac.com/profpixel/gray_patches/graypatches.htm )
I suspect what you are seening is a major difference in brightness/contrast between your computer monitior and your TV set (and in fact you admit this: "When I play the finished DVD on my iMac, there are no unusual problems with the video or audio. It looks and sounds like it did when played from the digital camcirder. But when played on both of my standalone DVD players + TVs, the video is too dark and the audio is much too loud.") so you aren't seeing an iDVD problem.

  • 2nd time this has happened. Computer making noises too loud for computer.

Okay, seriously I have had enough. While using Garage Band editing music, my computer once again made a too-loud beep/honk noise. This has happened once before. Now my audio/built in speakers are F'ed! NOW ALL MY AUDIO SOUNDS LIKE THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcTHGDOLEoc (you gotta play the video. )
This has happened once before, but everything was okay except for a bit of distortion. WHY does this keep happening?! Heres a bit more information:
    - Using Garage Band, didnt press ANY buttons to trigger sounds
    - In using wireless internet, password protected
    - I only had iMovie and iTunes opened (as well as GB)
    - THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS ** HAS HAPPENED
    - The sound was WAY too loud for the computer. It was like Max times 50
    - I've only owned my Mac for about a year.
    - I do not want to get a new bloody Mac, I just downgraded from SL.
I'm not really happy atm, so dont give me stupid answers.
(Wow, it sounds like im listening to AM radio! WOW! ... -.- )

I don't think you got a KP when the machine was off, but rather you may have closed the lid before the MB was fully powered down and it went into a sleep state.
Did you try running the Apple Hardware Test to see if the ram is bad? Since yo never had a KP before adding new ram, and the only change was adding said ram. My guess is that its the memory that is the cause.
I cannot vouch for patriot ram, but I suggest in the future you consider Crucial as its a higher quality ram.

  • Apple TV too loud

Basically, the output of Apple TV is that I have to set it on TV to either volume=1 (out of 100), which is too quiet, or volume=2, which is too high.
TV works find on regular channels, so the output of Apple TV is too loud.
Any chance to get it lower?

I assume you've used a 3-phono to 3-phono audio/video lead (yellow/red/white - composite, R&L audio lead) instead of a dedicated RGB component lead to connect the RGB component connectors to your TV. If it works and you're happy with it fine, but don't be surprised if some here criticize you for not having the correct impedance leads and so forth
Whilst the connectors may be red, green and blue in colour, the tv doesn't use an RGB signal it uses Y,Pb,Pr, however if what you are saying is that the OP might simply have used composite leads to connect the component ports on the tv to component ports on the tv, I can't see it making any difference. There may or may not be a difference in quality of picture because of the composite leads, but the leads connecting the L&R audio ports are still connected by the correct audio cable and the audio should work as expected.
I suspect your problem may be that the audio inputs on your TV simply monitor/relay the line level input audio via the TV speakers,
That could well be true but why would a tv do this.
Meantime I wonder if the OP could clarify their set up.
GEE where did all those posts come from, I was answering the third one.

  • AUX IN too loud on minimum mixer sett

I have an ES37/ES373 SoundBlaster card. Even with the built-in Windows mixer recording volume set to minimum, the input through AUX IN is WAY TOO LOUD. Mute cuts it off completely. Is this not a logarithmic volume control (audio taper)? I should expect to be able to smoothly adjust to zero volume using the slider on the Recording AUX IN volume slider.
What gives? Is there a workaround? Different Mixer software?

That will be some settings adjustments on your computer (e.g., volume control or volume management) and not on your MDR-1R headphones. You may contact the support provider of your computer for best assistance.
