Audio track volume low?

I Bus recorded my midi EXS drum track by routing it to Bus1 and by choosing Bus1 as an Input on the Audio track.
Problem now is that the Audio track is not loud enough. I normalized it using the Functions menu in the sample editor window. But when I play the audio region in the arrange window there is absolutely no volume increase?
Please help.

It's an old school assumption to always think the maximum level will lead to better results. With 24-Bit we have a lot of headroom and the resolution of Audio even at lower levels is appropriate.
Normalizing will alter the waveforms, add the empty bits at the top to the bottom of the file thus raising the level as well as the noise floor.

Mastering Audio by Bob Katz is a good book for these kind of topics...
I actually just made a test with some sine waves, the normalized sine wave had 0,3% of DC offset added whereas the original file had 0% DC offset.
Also in RX the spectrums of the two files look a little different:
2 khz sinewave at -12 dB
2 khz sinewave normalized

  • DVD - audio track volume too low; can adjust??

I've got a commercial movie DVD and when I play it back using the default Apple DVD player, I notice that at any given time, the background music audio track is very loud, while the dialog is extremely quiet. Before I decide that it's a bad DVD and needs to be returned, I wonder if I'm missing some setting (Dolby or whatever): is there any way to bring up the volume of specific individual tracks from a DVD?

In DVD player preferences, Disc Setup, uncheck the box "Disable Dolby dynamic range compression".
That may help. If it's already unchecked there's nothing more you can do.

  • Please help.  My audio track is too low after exporting movie made with Premiere Pro to YouTube.

Hello.  My crew and I recently completed post-production on an  independent film.  We used Adobe Premiere Pro 5.0 for video and audio  editing.  We had a very low budget for production, so we didn't have the best audio equipment to record sound with.  So in editing, we had to do quite a bit of sound mixing to minimize background/ambient noise and interferences/distortions caused by large electrical appliances in some indoor scenes, such as taverns and cafes.  We managed to clean up the audio, and the audio ultimately sounded great.  However, when we exported the film to YouTube, the entire audio track sounded low.  To hear the film at an adequate level on YouTube, the volume has to be turned all  the way up.  I'm wondering what can be done to export the film to YouTube and maintain strong, optimal audio volume/quality.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you and take care.

As Jeff of Safeharbor noted, you really need to check the audio meters in Prpro with your "final" project. I found that I could have a sound level that played fine on my computer, but ... on exporting to a DVD ... was way low and required a very high setting on any other computer or a tv to be able to hear. I hadn't actually looked at the audio meters. On checking them ... yeah, the peak was down about -18, the main content of the talking-heads was below that. After raising it with PrPro's audio tools, the sound was fine.
I'd bet your sound is showing low on the meters ...

  • HT2375 Using logic 9: play back of all project files now has problems:  Track volumes are way off - if panning is set to center then you cant hear that track? Even if pan is adjusted tracks are low and or distorted I have looked at core/built in audio

Been having project play back problems for about a month.  Sometimes when I open a project the volume of certain tracks is low and or distorted.  Oddly if a midi track is panned to the center (0) its volume is too low and if I pan right or left the track becomes louder.  Sometimes this doesn't help and if it is an audio track things become distorted.
Although things have been working good for about a year now I think it has something to do with the fact that I have to take the laptop to work and use headphones/built in audio for play back and then take it home and use different audio interface but I can't be sure.  The settings in preferences/audio/devises seem to be correct.
I have not added any plug-ins recently.  I have not downloaded any new programs recently other than a NI tutorial video (shouldn't have any affect) but I am trying to use a new midi controller but again that shouldn't have any affect on play back of existing track?
    Any suggestions?

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • When I try to map faders to the volume in audio tracks it only lets me map the "selected track"

LogicX user. I'm trying to map my mpd32's faders up with four audio tracks to control their volume. For the first three tracks, I can map the faders accordingly, and in the Controller Assignments window, in the "channel strip" section on the right, they all say "fader bank (1-3)", which is correct. When I get to the fourth audio track, and I go through the same steps as I have to map the first three audio tracks, the channel strip section says "selected track: 1" instead of what I thought it would say: "fader bank 4". When I try and manually change that to "fader bank 4", I move the control that I want it to be mapped to, it and the text automatically switches back to saying "selected track 1". I made sure that none of the tracks that I was trying to map were selected before I did this. I'm not new to logic by any means but I seriously need to be able to control these all at the same time for a performance I'm trying to do soon. It is driving me ******* crazy.

  • Audio: voiceover volume very low; & can't permanently delete original audio

I'm finishing off a project started by a colleague. In a number of clips, the speed of the footage has been reduced to 25%. The original audio is still embedded in those clips, but is not used and has been muted. I want to record a voiceover, and am using a USB microphone on my iMac. The recording levels work fine when I test them in GarageBand, but when I record the voiceover in iMovie, it's extremely quiet. I've tried increasing the volume to 200%; I've tried turning ducking on and off; and I've even recorded the voiceover in GarageBand, exported it to iTunes, where it sounds fine. But the minute I import it into my project, the volume goes right down.
I've tried detaching and deleting the original audio track from the relevant clips, in case this is causing problems (because the speed of the audio track is also reduced to 25%). But even if I empty my trash, when I go back to the clips, I can still detach the audio, so it hasn't really been deleted.
So. Can anybody suggest a solution to the low volume, and whether this might have anything to do with the speed reduction on the originally embedded audio?

I booted into Windows XP on Bootcamp, and it seems to have the same problem. I also tried the backup of my Tiger system on my external hard drive, and again, the same problem. I tried resetting PMU, but it's still the same. Again, for some reason, my internal speakers are working fine, but when I plug in headphones, the volume is really low even when I turn the volume all the way up. I tried this on iTunes, youtube, and the click sound when you turn up the volume from the keyboard. I can't hear any of them unless I have the volume turned all the way up, and even then, I can barely hear the sound.

  • How can I increase the volume on an audio track imported from a GarageBand project, beyond the  11

I have an audio track, mp3, originally recorded in GarageBand, but with an recording level set too low.  I've now adjusted the volume in the audio track to the max, but during playback it's still rather quiet.  I have to turn the volume on my Mac to the max to have it at an acceptable playback level.  Is the any why to increase the volume on that track any further?

in logic 8 i cant figure out how to automate volume for an audio track. With midi its fine i just use the hyper editor but with audio i just cant get it figured out. I want to mute the portions of a vocal track where there are no vocals.

  • Change volume for whole audio track

    Hi gang,
I feel like I am missing something obvious ...
I have a stereo background noise that recurs across my sequence. It is pasted into audio tracks A13 and A14 with crossfades between each occurrence. I want to fade the volume of all of them at the same time (i.e. all of the audio clips pasted into A13 and A14). If I select all of them by dragging a box using the mouse, it does not set the volume for all of the clips, only the last
How do you change the volume for a whole track?
    Cheers!

whats more, had you already manually adjusted some clips but not others and then wanted to adjust all the clips to the same level regardless of your previous adjustment then there's really no need to remove levels attributes, or redit etc etc ... you just follow the same steps posted above, choosing "Absolute" as the Gain adjustment - all clips regardless of previous levels will be set to the absolute level you specify.

  • Garage band 10.0.2  adjust volume of prerecorded audio track

Just started with garage band 10.0.2.  So confusing compared to previous versions.  When I just want to work with prerecorded tracks I don't even know which of the canned options to choose.  Next I just want to adjust volume of those tracks.

To adjust the volume of a prerecorded track, drag the audio file to an empty spot of the track area, to create a new audio track with basic settings.
Then adjust the track volume slider:

I am having a problem trying to figure out how to reduce the volume in the middle of an audio track.  Can someone enlighten me?

    Brucek75,
There are several ways to attenuate Volume of Audio in PrE. This article goes into detail on several of those: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3472343#3472343
The Audio Volume Keyframes (applied in at least one of two ways), will do exactly what you want.

  • How to Equalize volume between parts of audio tracks

    Dear Experts:
Using PRE 7 I have created a video using different recording devices (camera, lavalier, direct into computer) and since I have defective hearing I have a hard time making the different sections of the audio track at the same audio output level when I make/play the dvd it goes up and down in a very disturbing way to most viewers.
The yellow rubber band method is not very accurate and even tho I try to make all the same level, since some of them were recorded "louder" than ot\hers originally the db settings dont help. When I try the audio mixer approach same problem.
Is there anyway to highlight all the parts of the total audio track and make them all the same level?
    Appreciate any suggestions.
    Tom

    Tom,
The Audio Mixer can be used in several ways.
1.) it can be used to monitor the Levels, just like with the Audio Meters
2.) it can be used to adjust an Audio Track statically and for the entire Audio Track (more on this later)
3.) it can be used to apply Track Keyframes, when the Slider is adjusted during playback. This creates a lot of Track Keyframes, and I have changed the default timing of those Keyframes, as the default seems too frequent for my needs.
Now, one workflow would be to place your loud Clips onto one Audio Track, and the ones with the proper Levels on another. Then, in Audio Mixer, adjust the Track w/ the too loud Clips, down a bit. Playback to test and adjust (not while in playback) to suit.
    I use #2 and #3 most often.
As Steve points out, the Clips can have their Volume changed, with the fixed Effect>Volume. This can also be done several ways. One of the first things that I would do is zoom in on the Timeline horizontally, until just my Clip was occupying most of the visible area. Next, you can click-drag on the Audio Track's Header junction, to expand that vertically. This can be a bit tricky, as finding the right point to click-drag is like searching for pixels. Between the Audio Tracks and in the Header area, slowly move the Cursor, until it turns into parallel lines with arrows, click and drag to expand that Track vertically. This will show the yellow "rubberband" more clearly. Now, if your change is to be static, only affecting that Clip and all of that Clip equally, just click on the rubberband and slowly drag it up, or down. If you wish to do this Volume change dynamically, then you will want to add Keyframes. I find this much more easily done in the Effects Control Panel (with Clip Selected, Edit Effects), and use the little Timeline in it. With the fixed Effect>Volume, you would toggle the "stopwatch" so that Keyframes are active, and add those to adjust/modulate your Volume. Here is a look at the Effects Control Panel from PrPro 2.0, which is closer to the one in PrE 8:
    Hope that this helps.
Also, there are several articles on Keyframing basics by Steve, on the Muvipix site.
    Good luck,

  • Why is Track Volume, & Master So Low?

No matter how high I set the volume, I'm not getting very much volume at all. There's hardly anything showing on the LEDs, some of the instruments are up all the way, yet show less than halfway! Is there some global volume setting somewhere (other than the Master volume) that I just don't know about??? This is very frustrating.....
And anyone know where all the software instruments are hiding? The meager handful that are showing up can't be all there are.....

    poflynn wrote:
How did you record the instruments in the first place? If the recorded level was low it will play back low. If when you raise the individual Track volumes up and the Master volume up and still find it too low you can try duplicating the Track and copying the Region over, thereby doubling the output.
The software instruments you may have to download from one of the DVDs that came with the computer. They, along with the loops, are usually not installed.
    Hey Poflynn,
    1. This is a midi file that I loaded in, so does this mean I have to crank up the volume, then export it as a midi file, then reload, in order for the volume to be usable? This is odd, cause I've never experienced anything like this, with even el cheapo midi programs, or even using onboard QT to play the files... I remember, back sometime, someone showing me a little something I could click on, that suddenly boosted the volume back up to where it should be, but I can't find it, nor have I found it on line...
    2. I just reloaded Garageband via my iLife 08 Disc, wouldn't all the loops & software instruments load in automatically with the program? As it is, some definitely did, but I know the instrument supply is very, very thin, as I said, not even the usual standard GM selection (again, something every, even the cheapest players or programs have) is loaded.
What do I have to do, to get all of what should be there, and where can I find more instruments? thanks...

  • Volume on audio tracks

when i import audio tracks and pull the channel fader all the way down i'm still hearing audio through the channel. anyone know why?

Are you sure you are hearing that channel or the same audio coming from some other channel?
Do you see meter activity? What is it's output set to? Do you have any signal from it being routed to busses?

  • Global changes on an audio track or between in and out

I've come over from Avid and on Avid I could set an in an out point on an audio track and then changes the values of volume and pan which would then be changed between the in and out points.  I'm editing an interview and the radio mic channel has flipped over to one side and I want it in the middle and cannot get it to stay there.    I know that I can "write" in the audio mixer and just hold it there for hours, but I'm assuming there is a simpler way.  I know about paste attributes but it's not clear what I'm copying and where I'm pasting those attributes.  It would be far simpler if I could just select the audio track, set it the way I want it and tell it not to change for the duration.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

At the lower left of the timeline, there's a button that looks sort of like an upside down V. Click it- the clip overlays. You'll see red lines appear on your audio tracks. Grab the pen tool. Using it, you can click on the red rubber band lines to place key frames where you want. in your case, click once where you want your audio to begin fading out, then click again where you want the fade to end. On this last point, drag the keyframe all the way down, vertically.
As mentioned earlier, you can do this in the viewer as well - using the pen tool.
