Audio tracks: lock vs disconnect?

Hi, all. I'm new to iMac and FCE Express. I'm not sure I understand the functional difference between locking the audio tracks versus disconnecting them. Don't both functions do the same thing?
Thanks,
Jeff

Yes, I guess I'm referring to the patch panel.
So you're saying that if I UNpatch, say, an audio track, and I have a clip in the Viewer that has both video AND audio, moving it to the timeline with the UNpatched audio track will move the video portion only, and not the new clip's audio?
I'm sorry, I don't mean to be an idiot about all this. I think I understand the concept of LOCKING and UNLOCKING the tracks in the timeline. I'm just not getting the whole thing of PATCHING and UNPATCHING tracks, and when patching and unpatching is to be used instead of locking and unlocking. It's a mental block of some sort??
Thanks,
Jeff

  • Audio tracks locked yet the track still gets bumped out

I'm editing a music video. I put the audio track for the song onto the first/second line of the timeline and locked the tracks. Then I added a video clip and the audio for that bumped the locked audio out of the other lines! It's never done that for me before, how do I get it to QUIT?

    Hi,
Assuming that you really locked the audio track (see the diagonal lines running all along the locked track):
you might be experiencing some bizarre behavior, which [trashing the preferences|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] could fix.
    Try that,

  • [Help !]Exporting more than 2 audio tracks impossible ?

    Hi all,
I am trying to export a sequence with 6 audio tracks using *Menu->File->Export->Using Quicktime conversion...* and it seems to be impossible to export to more than 2 audio tracks !
If I use the option Export->Quicktime movie I can export my 6 audio tracks but I don't want to export to .mov file...
Can anyone confirm or has a solution ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Tom Douce

Nope, Red is correct on this Tom, unless I'm misunderstanding your question. Regardless of your audio hardware, to export more than 2 channels of audio you must define those extra channels by creating additional "audio outputs" for your sequence ... basically the number of audio channels in your export is equal to the number of audio outputs in your sequence settings; additionally you must map the audio tracks in your sequence to those audio outputs ... you do that by right clicking on or around the audio track lock icon / auto select icon for each channel and using the context menu to assign the track to a given output (you can also do this in the Audio Mixer toolbench window). This is the workflow regardless of whether you are exporting to a file or exporting to tape or otherwise.
For what its worth tho, in my own quick hardly conclusive tests earlier on, exporting a correctly configured multichannel sequence "Using Quicktime Conversion" always resulted in a stereo downmix being passed to the chosen export component, so I still think you're likely to end up needing to use the private export component API to get around this.
Hope I'm wrong tho, as it would surely make life a lot easier for you

  • Urgent editing crisis! Audio track A1 on the timeline has locked itself (not the 'lock symbol').

I can move the video footage but the audio is stuck. I get the red plus/minus (audio out of sync) when I move the video footage. I can't even right click on any of the files in the Audio 1 track, they are completely 'locked'. If I right click on the video footage that correspond with the A1 audio they have all ben 'on-linek'. Audio track 2 and 3 works absolutely fine and i can change length, delete and right click on them. What have I done wrong? Tried everything but can seem to find a solution.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Probably too late to look into your history panel. What about saving project in another name version and opening Auto Save versions?
thats all I got.  Good luck

  • Sync Lock for Audio Tracks

I usually have a lot of video and audio tracks going at the same time and run PP CS4.
I have read and watched many video tutorials and one thing I read gave me the impression that with CS4, if I had sync lock set for all my video AND audio tracks, it would keep all my audio tracks in sync with my video when I edit the video or add video transitions.
However I just performed an edit that moved a section of my original video and audio on the timline, and my second and third audio tracks just stayed right where they were and of course then were out of sync which I had to re-sync manually.
Did I miss something in the explanation or do I have a setting wrong?
For example if an edit on the original video and audio moved that timeline 30 seconds, I would want my audio track 2 and 3 move similarly which is what sync lock is supposed to do.
If I could get this to work, it would help my editing immensely.
    Thanks,
    BJBBJB1

I found this Adobe video that helped get sync lock and audio through my head that I thought I would post in case someone else runs into this thread needing help:
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/digital-video/mapping-source-tracks-to-target-tracks
Near the very end is when they finally get to it.  So clearly sync lock would work for insert editing, etc.
However for my original issue of changing track lengths to say accomodate handles, or other "manual" clip length changes made once the clips are on the timeline, it appears that the group command is the way to go as Harm suggested.  Sync lock does nothing for me in regard to changing clip lengths once on the timeline.  Only when inserting clips.
Just like with Photoshop many years ago, and my last NLE, clearly learning a good workflow for PP will serve me well in the future.  Clearly you want to make sure any clips you put on the timeline already have "handles" and also, if extensive length changes are needed, do that before you have multiple video and audio tracks piled up!
Thanks to all for the help!

  • Can I link and lock video and audio tracks - layers - as in Photoshop?

I'd like to link and lock entire clips of video and audio tracks, as I might in Photoshop, so that I can insert some material ahead of this group without having to move each separate tack in my timeline. I have a group of clips which works well together now, and it would be so nice to be able to link them, lock them together as on unit, and just insert the new material into the timeline ahead of this piece. Any ideas?

What version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system?
For now, a generalized Premiere Elements Windows answer.....
You would select all the clips (all at one time) that you want to move together, then Clip Menu/Group.
Or right click anywhere in the selection to bring up the pop up menu including the Group option.
Have you been there and done that yet?
Please supply more information so that we can fine tune the information that you seek.
    Thank you.

  • When downloading video into FCP my two audio tracks are locked together.

When downloading HD video into FCP my two audio tracks are locked together. Channel one will not separate from channel two. Not good. One channel is my miked talent, the other abient. Any suggestions? I cannot find the problem. Sequence settings? Preference settings?

I think you mean "importing", not downloading.
Downloading is when you copy a file from an Internet server to your computer.
Channel one will not separate from channel two.
    Any suggestions?
Select the two tracks and choose Modify > Stereo Pair
Or you can just use the keyboard shortcut option-L

  • Locking video clip to audio track?

I have a bunch of video clips in my sequence. A couple of the clips I want at certain points of the audio track and I dont want them to move but when I ripple delete video clips in fron of them it shifts the clips back (moving them away from the specific spot on the audio track). Is there a way to lock a video clip to a certain part of the audio?
I tried "grouping" the video clip and the audio but that doesn't seem to work as the video clips still move.

You can't lock a clip, only a track.  Move the desired clips to a higher track and lock that.

  • Lock symbol on audio tracks

    Hey all,
I just imported two audio tracks from videos I shot on DSLR cams. These files have a lock symbol on them and don't allow me to edit them.
Anyone know how to do that?

They're SMPTE locked.  In the Functions menu, or right click menu you can find the unlock command.

  • Locking Audio Track

    Hi,
I am on Pro CS4 & as I am doing a Music Video & have ALREADY mixed & mastered the track in professional studios (& the audio is completely finished) - just want to LOCK the audio track in the Timeline in Pro (so nothing can accidentally be imported over it or any  modifications can occur to the audio track).
I did import the 16-bit audio track (don't believe I can import 24-bit or 32-bit there - PLEASE correct me if I am incorrect on that), & now I simply want to LOCK that audio track "Audio 1" so it cannot be altered or modified in any way from now on.  Read up but could not find this.
    Many thanks!

I clicked the "toggle sync lock" (if that's what you mean), but it still allows me to bring other files into the timeline & overwrite it (the main audio file).  Unless that's not what you meant..

  • Turn off diagonal lines on locked audio track?

    Hello,
Not sure if I missed the option somewhere, but it's a bit difficult to read the waveform when I lock the audio track.  Is there a setting that removes that overlay?
    Thanks,

Something that might help is to expand the vertical zoom of that Audio Track. In the Track Header, hover the cursor around the junction between Tracks, until it turns into a double-line with vertical arrows - Click-drag. That will give you a "taller" Waveform, from which to work.
    Good luck,

  • Is it possible to lock an audio track in "record enabled" mode?

Here's how i write... i set up a drum loop to play for around 20 minutes, then I rec-enable one audio track to record vocals, and then finally, I skip around among hundreds of different midi tracks.
I just hit the down arrow button, and scroll through dozens and dozens of midi tracks. I quickly hit the keyboard to listen to the sounds. If i like a particular sound, i just want to hit record, and instantly record my vocals along with the midi performance.
Unfortunately, when i hit record, the vocal/audio track doesn't record. Right at the moment when i find an inspiring sound and hit record, the vocals just don't record.
I'm forced to scroll miles up the arrange window, to find
the vocal audio track. It's still blinking the red "rec" button, but this is misleading. It's not actually record enabled. I have to hold down shift, hit it once to turn it off, then hit it again to re-activate record function.
Only then can i record the midi AND vocals.
What I want and need is sooooooo simple to offer as a function, yet totally ruinous to my creative flow if it's not possible. (I used to do this easily on the far inferior
    Cubase VST 5.1, OS 9)
Is there a way to record enable an audio track, so that,
until I specifically disable the record function, it's
ALWAYS ready to record the second I hit the record button?
Even after I've been hitting the down arrow to audition
    various midi channels?
    MacPro 3ghz, 8 gig RAM, 3 raptor drives   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Logic 7.2.3, Kontakt 2 soft-sampler, RME 400

I tried to build screensets like you suggested. If I could
get this to work, I think it would be a great solution, but
    I'm having serious problems.
I opened a separate mixer, with just the single vocal/audio
    track showing.
Then I opened the main mixer, which has all the faders.
If I record-enable a midi track, and then hit the record-enable button on the audio track, the midi track becomes un-enabled. Incredibly frustrating.
The only way I've been able to do it has been to record-enable the vocal track, and then start recording.
Only if Logic is actually recording, can i then record-enable the midi track without deactivating the audio
    track.
A big problem is, that when i click to record enable the
vocal track, the arrange window jumps all the way up to the
top, where the audio track is. THen i'm forced to travel
down, to re-find the midi track.
You mentioned in your post that the mixer needs to be
"unlinked". HOw is this done? Will it be possible for
me to click on the record-enable button on the mixer's audio track without the arrange window jumping to that track?

  • Separating audio Tracks 1 and 2 in Final Cut Pro 6

Hello, So this may seem like a easy question but for some reason I'm having trouble.
I am editing a project with two audio tracks. Track 1 is a lav microphone and track 2 is (back up) boom mic.
All of track 1 is great with the wireless mic so I want to get rid of track 2 and duplicate track 1 and make that new track 2.
I've done this before and never had any problems but now I can't disconnect the two tracks.  If one is locked then the other will not
delete.  They are stuck together and will not do anything independently.
    I'm curious what I'm missing.
If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    J-

Click on the audio tracks in the timeline to select them, then go to the menu Modify > Stereo Pair to toggle if you want them to behave as a stereo pair or not (you do not).
