Audio Transitions.. I'm experiencing "jump cuts" in audio

I am new to FCP.
How come my audio is not transitioning along with my video. I have no prob in iMovie and other consumer apps.
The video transitions smoothly but my audio JUMPS abruptly.

Well, did you apply a transition to the audio? This has to be done separately...transitions don't happen to audio AND video at the same time. Unlike iMovie, you need to add an AUDIO transition separate from video. Unless you see that transistion icon on your audio cut, it ain't there.

Jump Cuts are not working

I am having trouble getting jump cuts to work. I put some music in the background, added beat markers, selected the part of the video (about 12 seconds over 21 beats) that I want to jump cut and clicked on 5 frames...*nothing happens* except the video clip that I had selected is now unselected. I tried this same technique at the Apple store on their demo computers and it worked fine. Any ideas?

Ok, so i have the same problem. The jump cuts doesnt work in the project I want it to work in. But if I create a new project with just one movie added, add beat markers and press jump to beats, it works just fine.
Could you be more precise about the transitions? Is it the transition between sceenes in the movieproject?
I have turned of Lock to Beats, I highlight the sceene I want, press jump to beatmarkers and nothing happens. I`ve tried just about every trick I can find from this forum and nothing works. But I dont fully understand the "transition" solutin you have come up with, so of someone could explain it abit better it would be much appreciated:) My Imovie is not in english either, so I`m not sure what you mean when you say transitions, hehe:)

ich habe feststellen müssen, dass jump cut an Beat-Markern nicht mehr funktioniert wenn man vorher einen Übergang zwischen zwei Videoclip setzt. Bei allen nachfolgenden Videoclip ist es nicht mehr möglich diese Funktion anzuwenden.
Ich habe es rauf und runter probiert, es geht bei mir anschließend nicht mehr, trotz aller Arbeitsschritte wie:
-automatische Übergänge deaktiviert
-Hintergrundmusiek Beat-Marker gesetzt
-Clip makiert
-Jump Cut an Beat-Markern angeklickt
.....keine Veränderung?????
was ist hier verkehrt?
Ist dies ein Programmfehler?
Ich würde mich freuen wenn mir jemand helfen könnte

Can you confirm you are running OSX 10.7.5?

Jump cuts during a footage import

I got some jump cuts during a footage import (firewire) from a JVC camera (1280X720 HD): during import I saw short black frames; then I saw that, corresponding those point,s I had the jump cuts. It's quite strange, also because, on the camera monitor itself all seemed fine.
The camera owner today tried importing same footage on a pinnacle software on a windows pc and all was fine there...
What could it be the problem here?
P.S. A month ago I imported a footage (720X576, so simple DV) from the same camera and all was fine

Also, you might try a different camera or a deck, which might be more forgiving.
I'm in the midst of ingesting a lot of old mini DV tapes…sometimes finding for some tapes the deck won't read properly but a camera will…and for others, the exact opposite.

Cropping in instead of Jump Cut FCPX

When recording your face, and you need to splice two clips together, you often see a crop in, rather than a jump cut. I know this is achevied by editiing in 720p from 1080p footage. How would you achieve this in FCPX?

Select the clip and from the transform button in the lower left of the viewer select Crop. Select the middle crop button to crop the video.

Dealing with unwanted jump cuts

I recorded a short video with the talent using an ear prompter. She's just getting used to using it and as a result I have many instances where she is sitting in front of the camera not speaking and these 'silences' need to be edited out. But when I select/ripple-delete these sections out, I'm getting 'jump-cut-like' jitter in her facial expression.
Any suggestions for how this type of situation is dealt with in editing, or do I have to reshoot? (Note: adding in b-roll to cover up the gaps would create its own type of choppiness).

A regular _quickish dissolve_ between two cuts might work or the Dip to Color dissolve.
The Dip to Color can be set to a color that works with the footage.
Timing will make or break it.

Jump cuts to beat when NOT the first clip

Hi I want to add jump cuts to a sound clip that is not the first one in the project.
After a lot of false starts in trying to get jump cuts onto a clip when the music was just
(a) attached to an exisitng film clip (green underneath the clip) - Won't work. or
(b) a pinned - sound clip first, movie clip second but where the sound does not butt up against another background clip (wrapped in purple) - Won't work
I've got it to work where it is background music - sound first, movie second (wrapped round in green). I've opened up the Clip Trimmer, added the beats on the beat with the 'M' key - highlighted the movie cliip - selected Clip>Jump cut to Beat Markers> chosen a frame rate BUT only where the background clip is the FIRST background.
If you add more songs to a project and go through the same sequence as before the number of frames is not greyed out but the app just doesn't do anything. All the tutorials online only ever show you adding jump cuts to the one and only music track but never to the second one.
This is v. frustating. Sounds like a bug to me.
Is there a way of breaking up the project so that it will play as one continuous film and so allowing different parts of the film to be the first piece of background music?

Importing transitions from imovie to final cut problems

Hello, I made a musicvideo in imovie, it´s all finished with cuts and transitions but I want to make the "final touch" with balance, colours etc in final cut.
The problem: when I import the imovie project into final cut pro x the clips and the transitions changes the duration so the clips nolonger sync with the music and some of the clips are much longer/shorter than the original. I don´t want to do all the job again, editing and add new transitions in final cut as it already took me a long time......Anyone have any solution?

You can delete the transitions in iMovie and re-add them after importing into FCP X. Granted, this is some work, but it should not be all that much. It is easy to add a number of transitions and to set their parameters all at once.
Like BenB said, transitions behave differently in both programs, and they do not match, so this conversion can cause problems, as you are now well aware.

Cross Dissolve transition does not work after cutting the tails of both ends.

I used to apply the Cross Dissolve video transition a while ago and never had any problems. My Cross Dissolve is not working for whatever reason. I usually split parts of the movie using the razor tool and cut the tail of both parts I just split, than apply the Cross Dissolve, but it does not work at all. I dont know if I am doing something wrong here, I need your help if you can help me with that. I have also tried to apply Film Dissolve but I have the same problem.

I am trying to put together a recruiting video. I was out recording a bunch of people talking about the organization, when I am working with something like this I usually try to shorten the 3 or 5 minute clip I have from one person and just connect the parts of the clip that need to be on the screen, that requires several cuts during the clip and merge the good parts together using the cross dissolve. It is very simple and I have done several times, but for whatever reason during certain parts of the clip when applied will not work. The clips are usually 1 to 3 minutes long and I need to extract the good parts making no more than 1 minute for each peson talking.

Getting what looks like a jump cut with some of my Ken Burns esq photos

I thought the problem might be eliminated once I exported out to Quicktime but it didn't work. Really anoying and I've had it happen alot. I'm new to Final Cut Pro, and I'm working on a paying job do out tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Okay here you go,
I would import photos into my photos bin. Drag the photo I wanted to use into the timeline, and send it to Motion. Inside of Motion I would add one or both of the grow/shrink and throw behaviors. I then saved it and went back to Final Cut. And as one would expect I now had a moving picture, that looked perfect.
As I continued to work on the project these pictures would develop jumps as they played. It was like I had cut out three or four frames from the middle of its movement and stuck the two ends together. Thanks guys.

Default Transition Alignment not center at cut

When I create a slideshow using a default transition, all the alignments are "end of cut". Manual says that the default is "center of cut" and that what I would like. Other than moving each one which is a huge job with 600 pics, is there any way of resetting the default, batch aligning or any other solution. I am using jpeg photos and just want to cross dissolve with the alignment center at cut. Thanks for any info

Effects automatically center on photos in my PE9 OK
You can set the effect to be left, right or centered by simply RIGHT clicking on the effect in the timeline and select properties
I just made a video with 20 jpgs in 10 seconds rapidly dissolving between each still with the dissolve effect centered between each change.
I first dragged each photo and made a sequence of the 20 stills with each photo showing for about 2 seconds.
I then set a dissolve effect on each cut
I shortened the length of each left and right of each transition to about 1/4 second by dragging the start and end points of the effect in
I then did the same to the length of each photo dragging it in to the edges of the dissolve effect
Each dissolve showed the same amount of time of each photo.
The 'photos' were screen captures I made of Google satelite shots zooming in from outer space to my home.
It produced quite an interesting effect like a rocket ship landing on my roof.
All effects were centered so there was the same in and out time for each still
You can actually copy and paste an effect that you have altered from its default settings instead of creating and altering it each time

Can't get Jump Cut to see Beat Markers

I've watched several tutorials. I've tried this in a new project and I can ge it to work. I just can't get it to work in my existing project. I've put the music in the background where it's behind the video clips. I go into Clip Trimmer or what ever it's called and add my beat markers, but when I select the portion of the clip surrounding the beat markers it doesn't split up the clips like it does when I try it in a new project.
I've unchecked the snap menu items under view or edit. Like the snap to ends, snap to beats or whatever.
What am I missing here?
Can I create what I want in one project and copy and paste that combo back into my other project?

This is an AVCHD camera. You need to use the log and transfer function with the correct settings. You should not use iMovie for capture as it captures in an older codec that's not very good. In FCP7 you can capture in ProRes or ProRes LT, both of which are superior.

Premiere Elements 7: Transitions: audio cut off brutally

I got me this Elements 7 package since yesterday and I am impressed so far, but there is one thing that does not make it 100% perfect for me yet.
-> In scene line I put 2 clips next to each other, I add a transition between them. (cross dissolve)
-> Premiere will do the transition BUT
1. during the transition-effect the second clip is not playing, only showing the first frame until the transition-effect is over, giving this stop & go' effect, where it should run smooth into the other clip.
2. There is no transition in the sound (the audio of the first clip should run smoothly to silent and vice versa for the second clip)
This makes the sound cut off very brutally during a transition.
Am i doing something horribly wrong here? Is there someway to 'automate' the thing I want, because I use this mostly between much videos.

You need to trim some frames (half the transition duration) off each end of the two clips where the transistion is applied. It is really much better to work in Timeline view it makes things much clearer.
Or if you do not want to trim the clips, you can open up the transition "properties" window and drag the ends of the clips so they overlap. You do not then get repeated frames and so no need to trim the clips.
But first try clicking on the transition and in the "properties" window for the transition click on "Center at cut"

Final Cut Studio - Adding Transitions

First off, I'm really new to Final Cut Pro... but very experienced in most other pro level Photo and Vector software. I'm following a video tutorial to learn the software, but I keep getting the "Dropped Frames" Error when I add effects. The way I'm doing it right now is I drag the slider to the point in the clip I want to add a transition and click the "Add Edit" option. From there I go to the browser and add the "Video Transition" "Dissolve". It shows up in the time line but when I go to play it and see my changes in the "Canvas" window I get the "Dropped Frames" error. I read the help file on this problem here:

I don't believe any of these things apply to me, and the options I could change did nothing to resolve the problem. I'm using a 13" MacBook Pro with the standard 2GB of RAM, 2.26GHz Core2Duo and Snow Leopard 10.6.2, 720P video at 30fps.
The effect isn't even playing in the "Canvas" but I see it in the timeline. It's just not showing any effect at all. I could really use some help here... I was under the impression the 13" MacBook Pro can handle this kind of editing. Again I'm not doing anything major, just a video with some minor transitions.

I may not be an experienced Final Cut user, but I have done a fair share of video editing. Suggesting dissolve effects are very CPU intensive is just not true. I can do them in other software with 0 issues. I appreciate your help, but if Final Cut is unable to do something I've had zero issues doing in Premiere and Avid... that is something to be surprised about.
However, perhaps it's the video format I'm trying to edit (h264) which would be a much more reasonable explanation. I'm not entirely convinced that using an External Firewire drive is the only solution to this issue, and judging by other responses for my purposes no one else is suggesting that.

Cutting into new clips without using " Transition effects"

What is the best way to cut into new clips in a smooth fashion without having to use a Cross Dissolve, etc. I am trying to create a more matter of fact experience with this project.
TV productions successfully go from clip to clip without transitions.... What magic is behind solid swithcing between clips in the timeline without using transitions ?

I have just noticed that you are talking about rescuing a current project.
My comments about cutaways still apply, but whether you will be able to shoot some "extra" footage now will depend on the nature of your film. Most things are possible with a little ingenuity.
If your film was about the first Mars landings and you can't get there to re-shoot, all you need to do is to take a trip to Australia where they have some scenery EXACTLY like the Martian landscape - indeed there is a classified US base on the edge of it!
Alternatively, and cheaper, you could shoot domestic footage and whenever the astronaut was about to have a jump-cut, you could have a flashback to his home life.
So with a little imagination most problems usually can be overcome.
