Audio-video offset in (extra) long movie recordings

Lately we are recording extra long movies with QuickTime (Mac OS X 10.4.x, QuickTime 7.0.x)
Typical movie recording durations are 2 to 15 hours.
Hereunder the applications we use to record the movies are listed:
* ChannelStorm (http://channelstorm.com/) Live Channel Pro 2.2.2 (Tiger edition)
* Apple QuickTime Player 7.0.x Pro ("new movie recording" option)
We tried a hole host of audio/video codec combinations but, for almost all of them, we got an acceptable audio-video offset (1 to 5 seconds) after the first hour of recording.
Offsets seem to increase roughly linearly with time. Most combinations give audio in advance with respect to video. The remaining combinations behave the other way round.
Anyone?

If you stick to the pre-sets (25%, 50%, 200%, 400%, etc.) sound is handled well.
If you create a custom speed (say 39% or 159%), then sound will be messed up.
I do in fact use such non-standard values for speed.
I will try to reset them and see what it does for the resulting movie.
(And isn't this the kind of bug we wouldn't expect in an Apple product?)
Anyway, thanks for now. I will report if this helps.

  • Weird audio/video offset/ "ghost copies" - please advise

    Hello everyone,
I'm helping a friend - who has no computer - with a video project, which I have assembled and post-produced for him from DV tapes in iMovie 09.
Things seemed to work out fine first, but we now run into increasingly bizarre audio/video offset issues, and I'm out of ideas.
The source material for this film (50 minutes) is circa 400 current video clips, 20 stills and 10 older (1999) material - to which we added circa 50 crossfades, 30 voice-overs and 20 music tracks here and there (which, I guess, makes this a mid-size project). We also slowed down a few clips to adapt timing.
    Here is what happens:
Around 40 min. into the project, I have muted the sound from quite a few clips and added a music track and voiceover.
Now when editing and previewing this project within iMovie, everything looks and sounds just fine: The sound from the original clips is muted, and the (music + voiceover) audio tracks play back as they should.
But once I export this movie (be it as a tiny 3GP clip or an iDVD project), these scenes will have a third, unwanted audio track added: the original sound from the clips following circa +one minute later+ in the movie - at full level, which is embarrassing, to put it mildly.
E.g., at 40:00, the original sound from the clip at 41:10 is audible with its full level - although both the clip at 40:00 and the one at 41:10 are muted within the project.
Now I tried everything I could think of.
I muted all the clips manually.
I separated the audio from the dubious clips and muted it again, just to make sure.
I threw out several of the older clips (coming from a VHS tape) used in this project.
The only effect this has is that these weird offsets/ "ghost" copies move around; they won't disappear.
I am out of ideas. So here I have an iMovie project which runs fine in iMovie itself - but once exported to iTunes or a DVD, it spits out additional audio material where it shouldn't. Very frustrating, and I cannot pinpoint the source.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26567 describes a similar problem, but this is a 2005 article referring to versions of iMovie and OS X long gone - and the fix it suggests (exporting 12 bit audio to an external FireWire camcorder in 16 bit and re-importing it) is not possible anymore with today's iMovie.
I would really appreciate if someone could gave me a hint what is happening here, and how to fix this problem.
    Thank you.

  • No audio video streams upon import of .mov files?

Hi... recently upgraded OS onto Intel 240 GB SSD. Running Widows 7 64 bit, clean re-install, 24 GB RAM, NIVIDIA Quadro FX 4800. I have been trying to optimize the system for maximum GPU accelerated effects while also taking advantage of the high speed read and write of my disk. OS runs on SSD, Adobe media cache on separate 2 TB eSATA connection, Media stored on external drive USB 3.0. Without getting into the fine details this is a snapshot of my workflow.
The few problems I am encountering are some .mov files cannot be imported to PP. Error reads no audio or video stream in the files. I suspected metadata issues so tried to import with media browser and still no luck. These files worked perfectly before I began surgery 2 days ago on my computer. I have installed the latest version of quicktime and yet to no avail. Any recommendations here regarding my issue with imports or suggestions to benefit from my hardware would be appreciated.

    Hi
Did you install the OS from the Toshiba Recovery CD???
If yes, so all Toshiba drivers and utilities should be installed now and should works.
I think you mean the Toshiba controls.
On my notebook this Toshiba controls application was placed in the control panel. Therefore I think you will also find it in the control panel on your notebook.
There you can check if the certain programs were assigned to the buttons.

  • Audio & Video fall out of synch (movies, television, video podcasts) on  iTunes 10.4

I have twice downloaded and installed the 64bit version of iTunes 10.4 running on the latest version of Windows 7. Whenever I play a video podcast, movie, or television show using iTunes, the voice and video get completely out of synchronization. One seems to fall behind the other and they never resynchronize. To check to see if I have file damage, I have played the same media using Quicktime and the problem does not occur. The problems seem completely localized to iTunes. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

I have the same problem and there does not appear to be a fix.
    I am done with iTunes!!!

  • Complete Show playback - audio/video

Hi all, I'm posting this in both the Logic and Mainstage forums.
I've created an entire show that will be scripted from beginning to end and want all the audio/video elements to be in sync with each other, played back from my Mac Book Pro, feeding an audio interface and a VGA output to a projector.
What is the best and most stable program/solution for running multiple audio stream playback (one stereo wav file, one mono wav file, and a live vocal channel), along with several different video clips, on a timeline?
I have numerous songs or medleys that will be played live, along with a stereo backing track, as well as a mono click track (in sync, obviously). The fourth track, and this is optional, but ideal, would be to process the lead vocal channel live through the same timeline, with effects changing at specific moments in the song.
Lastly there are video elements that would be synced up to various pieces of music.
I was hoping to accomplish this in either Logic Pro or Mainstage, but I don't see a video playback option in Mainstage, and Logic seems to allow only one Quicktime Movie at a time. I could render the entire show's video content into one long movie that runs the length of the show, but was hoping to have each song or segment as its own separate piece, so that later I could change the order of playback.
Additionally I could see using a MIDI track to send program change information to the lighting desk....but that's down the road.
If this happens inside Logic, is there a way to set up chapter markers so that I can start and stop playback, and jump to the next marker?
    Thanks for your help.

inside Logic, is there a way to set up chapter markers so that I can start and stop playback, and jump to the next marker?
Yes. Markers are helpful, and they're easy to work with, especially if you learn to control them with the keyboard. Here are some relevant key commands. They are all available by default (i.e., there's no need to load a particular key command preset):
    ⌃K Create Marker
    ⌘↩ Rename Marker
    ⌘⌫ Delete Marker
    ⌃, Go to Previous Marker
    ⌃. Go to Next Marker
As you're scrolling through the project to create Markers, it helps to know about these commands:
    , Rewind
    . Forward
    ⇧, Fast Rewind
    ⇧. Fast Forward
If you have the US preset loaded, the commands are a little different, as follows:
    ⇧⌘' Create Marker
    ⌘↓ Delete Marker
    ⌃⌘← Go to Previous Marker
    ⌃⌘→ Go to Next Marker
It makes no sense that the US preset uses these more difficult keystrokes. It uses the other keystrokes (⌃K, ⌘⌫, ⌃, and ⌃.) for no other purpose. This is one of several reasons that I tend to avoid the US preset.
Anyone confused by any of those symbols can find an illustrated guide here or here.

  • Youtube videos freeze, audio keeps playing. As long as I keep moving my cursor, it play ok. What's wrong?

This seems to happen on all Youtube video's I play. I don't know about other videos because I seldom view any others. When the video freeze happens the download bar is always ahead of the play bar so I don't think download is the problem. However, when the freeze happens, the download bar stops moving. When the play bar catches up to the download bar, the audio stops also. If I move my cursor, the video and audio start playing again. As long as I keep my cursor moving, the video plays fine. I am using Firefox 18.0.1. Computer is an HP dv6-1350us with dual processors. OS is Windows 7. I also use Chrome at times and the freeze doesn't happen on Chrome.

  • IDVD 08 audio/video sync drift toward end of DVD movie - fix/workaround?

Anyone know how I can fix this issue? It's driving me crazy.
I've just spent a few evenings in iMovie 08, editing together the video of my son's birth. All looked & amazingly good in iMovie. The "Large" .m4v file output by iMovie - Shared with the Media Browser - plays perfectly in Quicktime too.
However, after adding that shared movie to iDVD 08, and burning a DVD, I noticed that the audio sync drifts toward the end of the Movie when plated back. At the start of the DVD all seems well, but by the end of the ~1hr 20 minute movie the audio is unbearably out of sync with the video. Completely unwatchable.
After a little Googling I came across some reports that iDVD might not deal well with video that's been recorded with 12-bit audio. I've confirmed that my camcorder is (was!) set to 12-bit rather than 16-bit (the default, I'm sure). So if that's the problem I'm hosed... it's not like I can get a retake on that footage
Is there a reasonable workaround for this issue? I'm obviously unable to re-take the video (or the other 10 hours of DV video tape I've yet to use in an iMovie project). Ideally I'd like Apple to release a patch for this. Shouldn't it be possible for iDVD to account for audio that was originally recorded in 12-bit... even if it's just a checkbox you have to select to tip it off?
Then again, perhaps this is totally unrelated to the 12-bit issue, and this is just a run of the mill bug?
As I said... iMovie generates a MPEG4 video file of the Movie that looks/sounds perfect, so it seems this sync issue's being created somewhere in iDVD as it's rendering the audio/video to burn to the DVD...
    Thanks in advance.

I've tried most of the options I can think of, and the audio sync drift issue continues on this ~1hr 12 minute iMovie/iDVD 08 project.
A couple of promising ideas tried used QT Pro, to export the audio track from the iMovie generated MPEG-4 file - as a WAV file, resampling to 48kHz and 16-bit... then Adding this back to the video track in the MPEG-4 file (having deleted the original audio track). In another test I also tried the Add to Selection and Scale option. Oddly enough I think the Add to Selection and Scale attempt generated more sync issues than before in the final DVD movie... so I stuck with the MPEG-4 file containing the video track and the added, resampled at 48kHz & 16 bit, WAV audio track.
This was saved as a self contained Movie file, producing a QT .mov file. I moved this .mov file into the iDVD projects directory structure so that it was avalable in iDVD's Media Browser. I then reworked the iDVD project to use this QT large.mov file, instead of the original iMovie large.m4v file.
As a reminder... the original large.m4v file has the following properties:
    29.97 FPS H.264 Decoder, 960 x 540, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    0:01:12:07.16 duration
The resampled and saved QT MOV file has the following properties:
    29.97 FPS H.264 Decoder, 960 x 540, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
    0:01:12:07.16 duration
BOTH versions of this Movie file play flawlessly within QT Pro... there's no audio sync drift evident toward the end of the movie unless I use iDVD 08 to burn either movie file to a Physical DVD (or DVD Disk Image). In both cases the resultant DVD Movie exhibits significant audio sync drift as the ~1hr 12 minute movie progresses. The sync goes out by ~ <= 1 second based on a rough visual assessment.
I've not yet tried to burn either the original iMovie produced MPEG-4 video file or my QT Pro tweaked audio track .MOV file version to a DVD on my PC...
... But I have used an application called Burn (referenced in this earlier/archived iDVD sync drift forum post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1332100 by user F Shippey - http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/) to take the QT Pro tweaked .mov file version of the original MPEG-4 file and burn it to a DVD...
    Results:
The Burn app burnt DVD plays with NO audio sync issues!... Even though it was generated from the same audio tweaked (48kHz/16-bit resampled) QT Pro .mov file.
However, whenever I burn a DVD using iDVD 08 the audio sync gradually drifts. It matters not whether I use the original iMovie 08 generated MPEG-4 movie file, or the QT Pro version of that file with the resampled audio track (the same one that works fine with Burn).
It sure looks to me like iDVD has a problem... Again, refer to http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1332100 for someone else who seems to have run into similar challenges.
    Am I overlooking something?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Video and audio don't match for purchased movies in iTunes

I recently purchased several movies from the iTunes store, but when I play them in iTunes the video doesn't match the audio.  If I pause the movie, it will sync for a short while, then will not match again.  I've tried disabling the Direct 3D video acceleration in QuickTime, but that didn't fix the problem.  I've seen this posted a number of times in this forum, but didn't see any solutions.  Any suggestions?
(I've updated my laptop's BIOS, video drivers and audio drivers.  I've downloaded the newest versions of iTunes and QuickTime.)

OK, as of CS4.1, PrPro has the capability to Import 100% DVD-compliant .VOB's. You state that your .VOB was created by by PrPro. In CS4, this is not possible. As of CS3, the DVD's MUST be created by Encore. Is this what you mean? If so, they will be 100% DVD-compliant, so the .VOB's will Import fine, and edit as well as an MPEG-2 can.
Take a look at this ARTICLE for background on .VOB's.
Now, with a 100% DVD-compliant set of VOB's, you should not have an OOS issue. Take a look at this ARTICLE for ways to correct OOS issues.
    Good luck,

    What version of FCP X?
Did you render? what are the project specs? do you use many compound clips? how much ram, hard drive space, how is the hard drive connected?
It looks like your mac can't keep up. Maybe the bottleneck is the hard drive, or something else.
Try exporting a master file and see if the video is ok.
Also, keep Activity Monitor open and see how much memory pressure you've got.

    Hi James,
I am listening to embedded training files on the Quick Time player (I think). They cannot be copied to protect the information.  You only have the option of listening.   I used to be able to click on the Q in the audio strip and it would provide a diagonal arrow and this would allow me to expand the bar to a full screen. I then had the bar which would allow me to navigate in case I wanted to listen again or in case I wanted to move forward.  After my upgrade, I can no longer expand the strip to a full screen with the adjuster.  Now I have not chance to take a break in listening to these audios and most of them are at least an hour long.  Thanks for your help.

  • Audio/video not syncing on a PC with i-tunes movies.

Recently started having a problem with the audio and video of my itunes movies on my PC. Had no problem for the longest time, years. I get up to 3 seconds gap, video ahead of audio on every movie I play. If I pause for a few seconds, the audio/video sync but shortly after, start to separate again. I reinstalled i-tunes, reinstalled my movies one at a time from the cloud. If helpful, for some unknown reason, all my movies recently were deleted from the hard drive memory but were still available from the cloud. Don't seem to have the issue when playing movies on my i-touch. Audio on the computer while playing a movie seems to have pops or quick gaps when the a/v is drifting apart. These are memory resident movies not played from cloud storage.

I do a fair amount of audio, video editing and photoshop, but I have a limited budget.  What's going to give the best bang-for-buck for the next 3-5 yrs?  My current machine is a 13" Macbook unibody 2.4 Core 2 Duo w/ 4Gb Ram so it's time to move forward with more power and screen real estate!

    Hello, Jeff
I could never edit on a 13" screen. I'm currently using a 17" MBP i7 Early 2011 as a fast replacement to my aged 20" Intel iMac.
Both systems are not that far apart on stats and you will find that processing HD video will rely highly on the read/write to your storage. Myself, I'd be eye balling the 2011 for the Thunderbolt port so HD Video export/compression doesn't take forever! Currently processing a finished HD project for DVD uses at most 20% of my total CPU capacity. The FW800 drive is the big bottleneck! (I know I need at least a RAID to see a real speed boost).
How good your eyes are and your usage style would dictate if the difference in screen size make a difference to you.

  • When songs set to 'shuffle' audio-books no longer move onto next book.

    Hi Apple community,
I like to have my songs on shuffle so that I'm not listening to everything alphabetically.
However, when I do this, my audiobooks no longer move from one file to another.
For example if I had audiobook chapters 1,2,3.
Without shuffle, they would automatically flow from one chapter to the next when a file is finished playing. (ch1 -> ch2 -> ch3)
With songs set to shuffle, chapter 1 will play and will stop playing anything after chapter 1 is finished. (ch1)
How can I leave my songs shuffled and keep the audiobooks continue playing sequentially?

10 after 1 is because of the sorting used. Change the 1 through 9 to be 01, 02, 03.
To get the audiobook files into audiobook section they must be in a specific format.
