Audio/Video stuttering/halting problem - mouse interaction

Hi all -
I’ve been experiencing a problem since I updated my MBP to 10.4.8: stuttering audio and video. Any audio (iTunes, Flash w/ audio, Quicktime w/ audio) doesn't play smoothly - it halts for a few hundred milliseconds, plays, halts, etc. In some cases, it causes the audio and video to lose sync.
However, as long as I keep the mouse moving, the stuttering stops. Also, it matters which pointer device I use. I generally use an external USB trackball, and when that is plugged in, the audio stutters at a noticeably different rate than when the trackball is unplugged. If I am using the integrated touchpad, the stuttering is much worse (longer gaps in playback), but it’s still the case that as long as I keep the pointer moving, the stuttering stops.
From this, I conclude that it’s a mouse problem that is somehow interfering with A/V playback. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have a different diagnosis and/or a solution?
Macbook Pro 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Puzzling, the USB Bus would seem to be the most likely culprit here, are you playing back files from the internal drive or an external one ?
Have you tried removing / updating the trackball software ?
(I suspect something is hogging the bus cycles - trackpad, ball, mouse, isight, IR etc. are all USB devices)
In System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Trackpad have you got 'Ignore accidental input' checked or not ?
Maybe try a reset of Parameter RAM ? (Apple/Option/P/R at start and wait for three chimes before letting go)

So I've had this issue with streaming Netflix Instant play videos on 3 different browsers: Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. Streaming works well for a variable amount of time, from 1 minute to 10 minutes. Then, the playback gets choppy and the audio stutters. During this time, when I try to move the cursor there is a significant delay. It's as if my computer is too slow to handle the streaming. But everything else from youtube to hulu works fine.
I've been told by Netflix that this problem is processor related. Everytime I'm streaming, their statistics are showing that my processes are eating up 90+% of the CPU. When I go to Activity Monitor, I see Silverlight plugin (which is what Netflix unfortunately streams through) is the only thing that's causing the high usage.
Netflix has said I should uninstall Silverlight 3 and run an older version. Did that...no success.
Then, they said I should defrag my hard drive but did not give me specifics on how to do it. So when I googled it, I pretty much came to the conclusion that a Mac does not need to be defragged, and even if I did it, the results will be miniscule. So I'm not gonna throw away $20-$40 to buy some stupid 3rd party defrag tool when I don't need it.
So I've come to you, Mac community. What do you think I should do now to fix my choppy audio/video problem?

this is not a laptop or browser issue. this is an issue that has gained noterity and popularity just as of recent with silverlight and netflix. this has been an issue for numerous people, all of which have been using various different browsers, hardware, isps, and operating systems. netflix has claimed ignorance despite multiple complaints from discontent users and proprietors of the company. wootinany, the only effective method of fixing this streaming problem that the anyone has been able to figure out, (since netflix nor silverlight seem to be doing a **** thing about it) is changing the buffering rate of the video you are watching. you can do this by holding shift+alt, Shift+Option(Alt) clicking, then clicking stream manager and selecting manual selection and changing it from the default option of 1050 to a lower buffering rate. this seems to be working for most people but not all. since there is no way to save this preference, unfortunately you must select your buffering rate every single time you start a new movie. if this doesnt work try deleting your facebook account and mailing tons of money and/or drugs to 1375 williams st. #102 denver CO. and upon reception of said comodities i will send you an email of thanks and say a meditative mantra in hopes that your problem will be fixed which will hopefully do something. its worth a try. preffered drugs include in this order, heroin, marijuana, cocaine, any form of psychedelic(preferreably DMT) and heroin. send any of these and i will say the mantra to fix your problem. again, wootinany.

  • Windows 8.1 Audio/Video Stuttering/Sticking

I just got my Pavilion Touchsmart yesterday and I'm already having audio/video problems. I first noticed it while watching videos on youtube. Videos at a higher definition stutter more than videos at a lower definition. But now I'm noticing it while playing games. It will freeze for about a second and the audio will repeat, but then it will go back to normal. It's doing this several times a minute and I can't stand it any more.
It's a 12 gb laptop, so I'm not sure what could be causing it.
The audio driver that I am using is a Realtek High Definition Audio.

  • FMS: "two-way audio-video communication" article - problem

    Hi,
    I found an interesting article:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashmediaserver/articles/ora_learning_fms3.html
    I read the 2 .article, named: "Chapter 5: Two-way audio-video communications"
    http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/flashmediaserver/pdfs /ora_learning_fms3_ch05.pdf
I have copied the server side code and the client side code out of the  e-book("A Better Two-Way Chat Application"). All the thing i changed in the codes are:
    -in server side  code: nothing
    -in client side code:
              -original  line:       var rtmpNow:String="rtmp://192.168.0.11/deux";
              -changed  line:     var  rtmpNow:String="rtmp://wl78lftffoo.rtmphost.com/kamerarandi";
(The  service provider gave it to me that url)
When i try to  connect (you can try it here): mz203.atw.hu), after a few seconds  the  Flash Player crashes.(I see myself and the other person for 1-2  seconds).
Have you got any idea, why is this?
    Thanks,
    Z

    Hi,
I have tried that way, but it isn't succeed. Did you see the crash of the flash player?
(You can try it on mz203.atw.hu when 2 person using videochat at the same time)

  • No audio/video/screen-sharing problem in iChat 4.0

I've been using iChat for years (since its original release) and since upgrading to 10.5 I can no longer audio or video chat; and the new screen-sharing option doesn't work either.
I connect to the net through an AirPort wireless network, which is connected to an ADSL Nation X-Modem/Router. I have a 2Mbps connection. As far as I know all the required ports are open on the router. My friend has the same ISP as me (Force9) and has made sure he has the same ports open on his router too.
I've adjusted my iChat settings to port 443 with no SSL and a Bandwidth limit of 500 Kbps in iChat; and QuickTime settings to 1.5 Mbps in System Preferences. I've read other discussions on this forum suggesting these options.
However, nothing seems to work. I can't even get audio and video to work across Bonjour on my home network any more. I'd be grateful for any help anyone can offer.

    Hi,
Technically it should not matter if you are using AIM or @Mac names.
However you have solved that bit.
The Screen Sharing part uses three ports.
Two randomly picked ports for the Screen Sharing and the same A/V port for the Audio component. As the Airport is normally set to Share An IP and does NAT on the fly so to speak this also should not be a problem
The ADSLNAtion site is a bit behind on it's Airport page
http://www.adslnation.com/support/knowledgebase/ht007.php as it shows the older Firmware pics.
    I found the new page
    http://www.adslnation.com/knowledgebase/xmodem+airport-11n.php
This says that the DNS server info in the Airport needs to be removed.
It is not clear if this is a variation for the X-Modem M3
Very few of the posts here http://forum.adslnation.com/viewforum.php?f=3 are after Leopard came out and nothing appears to be about iChat.
So it would somewhat depend if the Airport is Sharing and IP or is Static to the computer and Port Mapping used.

  • Audio/Video Stutters on GT627 laptop

I had no problems whatsoever with my laptop for about two months.  However, recently when I am listening to music there is extreme stuttering every time I open up a web page or a new program.  I've noticed that videos and games stutter as well, even when the system is completely capable of playing them.  I still have Vista Home Premium that came with the laptop.  I see that CPU usage jumps temporarily to 100% when opening a new web page.  I never checked this before but I assume this can't be normal.  I've updated all the drivers from the MSI website, which has not fixed the problem.  Vista is also completely up to date.

  • ITunes/QT/Audio/Video Stuttering Fixed!

The problem is with QuickTime and the fix is to downgrade your version of QT.
    1) Download Pacifist to your Desktop.
    2) Download the Quicktime 7.3.1 installer from Apple downloads to your Desktop.
    3) Double-click the Pacifist dmg and install Pacifist.
    4) Open Pacifist. Click 'Open Package' and navigate to the Quicktime 7.3.1 installer dmg on your Desktop.
    5) Once the package is open, click on the 7.3.1 installer package and click on 'Install' in Pacifist.
    6) Making sure you 'Use Administrator Privileges,' answer all questions about replacing the exiting package and files in the affirmative.
    7) Once Pacifist has finished, no more stuttering!

It's good that you found a solution, but since going back to iTunes 7.7 both my laptops stream music over airtunes without missing a single beat, no matter the CPU and network load. This tells me that there must be a problem with iTunes 8 as well.

  • Pavilion s3220n (W7) - audio / video glitches, freezing, problems at startup, & general doom

    hi,
For the last few months, I've been having issues with my desktop. At seemingly random moments, the screen will freeze. Sometimes this can last a few seconds, sometime a minute or two. At other times it goes on for ages, and requires a hard restart. If there is any sort of audio playing, be it through vlc / iTunes / youtube, the freeze will be accompanied by a brain shredding screeching drone / stutter.
Also (and I don't know if this is related), often on startup, the computer will freeze. The windows logo will sort of hang mid-formation. Again, sometimes this goes away after some time, at others I need to turn it off.
In terms of frequency of occurance - this also seems completely random. I can go a week w/o this happening, whereas today it has been doing my head in every 5-10 minutes. It's been pretty much impossible to do any work.
I've read elsewhere about people having similar issues, and some have suggested that updating the BIOS can help, but it appears that there is no BIOS update for my model on HP's site.
System info below, if it is relevant:
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+, 2.60 GHz
    2.00 GB RAM
    32-bit OS
    Windows 7 Professional
Thanks for any help ahead of time.

I have seen such symptoms caused by a failing power supply . Though it could be caused by other hardware issue I would suspect power supply first. You could take it in to Best Buy,Staples, etc and ask them to test it for you.
You should have Diagnostics in BIOS or on start up screen to test the hard drive.

  • Functionality for seeking media file(audio/video) files

    Hi
In my project my web-application initializes Quick Time media player
    for playing media files(audio/video).
My problem is when I drag my task bar on the media player my application could not play from that point. From the point I drag the bar my media player in web-application has to play from that point.
How can I write code in servlet for SEEKING FUNCTIONALITY.
    Thank U

If you uncheck a movie by its name it won't get listed on the tv. So there isn't actually any need to give the two versions of the same movie a different name.
So for the movie encoded for tv, check its name and it will appear on the tv.
For the movie encoded for ipod, uncheck its name so it won't appear on the tv and add it to a playlist for syncing with your ipod.

  • ITunes 8.1.1 TV Shows Video Stutters but Audio plays properly

I upgraded to iTunes 8.1.1 hoping to fix a problem I was having. When I pay TV shows that were purchased through iTunes the audio comes through properly but the video lags and jumps. If it is a SD video the lag is a "quick blink of the eye". If it is an HD video it can take several seconds for the video to catch up with the audio, looking like the video has frozen.
    • I am using an iMac G5 with OSX 10.5.7 with 2GB DDR SDRAM 2GHZ PPC
    • The problem occurs if I open the video with QuickTime too.
    • The files are all held on an external HD; but when I copy a file over to the main HD, it still happens.
    • I've deleted all iTunes plist files and there are no 3rd party apps with iTunes.
    • I'm reinstalled QT 7.6 instead of just upgrading it.
    • I've done permission repairs and had 3 issues that were not able to be fixed:
"Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/quota" has been modified and will not be repaired. Warning: SUID file" usr/bin/quota has been modified and will not be repaired. AND Warning: SUID file "sur/bin/rsh has been modified and will not be repaired."
    • The video stuttering also happens with movies that I make in iMovie 9.0, although all the files work fine on my iphone/youtube/other computers.
Any thoughts on how to fix this?

    Hi hockeymom3,
Have you installed any QuickTime components? If you have, try removing them and testing again.
    They are generally located in /Library/QuickTime(Launch Finder> click Go> Computer> Macintosh HD> Library> QuickTime) or ~/Library/QuickTime(Launch Finder> click Go> Home> Library>QuickTime).
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24166 describes similar issues with Intel Macs caused by 3rd-party components.

  • QT audio and video stutters in WinXP - IE7 and Firefox - DSL

Every time I click on an audio or video link on a webpage, QT Player opens to play the file. However, every file it opens - audio or video - stutters in a specific pattern. Each segment (chunk, packet, whatever the unit term is) repeats four times before the next one begins. This renders all files unplayable. Reinstalling has not solved the problem. I'm running the latest updated version of the QTPlayer. I don't know the number, but it updated last night, 3/9/2007.
    Anybody have a solution?

  • I just moved my itunes library from a win 7 computer to a win 8.1 computer. Getting an error message "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly. Can't play CDs or get audio file from web!

Help! I just moved my itunes library from a Win 7 computer to a new Win 8.1 computer following the instructions on the itunes website. Everything is good except I'm getting an error message on the Win 8 computer if I try to play a CD or get an audio file off of the internet. I get an error message that says "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly. I don't know where to look for or fix the audio configuration on the win 8 computer. As far as I can tell the iTunes configuration looks the same as on the other computers in the house. At this point I don't dare plug my ipod touch into the Win 8 computer for fear it will get messed up.

I have the same problem and I know that it is due to my PCI Audio driver not being compatible with WIndows 8.1.
iTunes isn't the only program that can't direct sound to the built-in speakers anymore. The obvious solution would be to update the drivers, but unfortunately Dell does not provide an updated driver for my model, so I am stuck with that.
However, saying that, only my laptop speakers are affected by this. I can use sound fine on applications where I can choose the output device and direct sound to the head phones, but for some reason iTunes does not let you choose the audio device manually.
To listen to music I imported the iTunes Library in Windows Media Player and changed the audio output using the following instructions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/c00d11ba
However, I would also like to rent movie's from iTunes,
Would be great if iTunes would let you choose the output device, too, like most other applications using sound  from Skype to Windows Media Player,...

Secondly, when I try to play the video in the source monitor, the audio plays but the video doesn’t; it only shows the first frame [this is after waiting until the video is ?recognized? ]   I can use the shift-arrow key and see that the video is there.
Thirdly, I can play the .avi file in other players, e.g., avidemux or PE pro CS5 on another computer.  There, I see that the audio and video are not in sync; the audio can be up to 300 ms ahead of the video (as determined using avidemux).
    Questions:
    1.  Why doesn’t the source monitor play the video? Is this a problem with PE8 (latest update as of 3 March 2011) on aWIN7 64 bit computer (intel duo core. 3 GHz).
    2. Is the audio-video sync problem the result of the ‘dropped frames?’ How can PE8 correct this? Avoid this? Or, is it coincidence?

"I think you're telling me you're using a backwards compatible Digital8  camcorder to capture your video as DV-AVIs. Is that right?" YES
"Are you using  Premiere Elements to do this capturing?" YES, AS ABOVE PE8
"Go to the File menu and select Properties. It should show a standard DV codec being used for your video and audio."
WMP v12 is dumb. Under properties, media, it says 'video.'  However, avidemux gave me the information state above: video -- Codec 4CC: dvsd, frame rate: 29.971 fps; audio -- codec: PCM, channels: Stereo, frequency: 48 kHz.
    So, back to the Questions:

  • The big iChat problems. Audio/Video (now completely broken in 10.7.3), the "not-authorized" problem

So, I am running iChat on OS X Lion 10.7.3 on an early-2011 MBP 13'' . These problems have been here for a while, though (I got my comp with 10.7.0). I have AIM/GMail/Yahoo connected..
One problem is the issue of non-authorized people. There is a list of "not authorized" people that I have to scroll past in my "offline" section of iChat buddies before I actually get to the real offline contacts. Big note here: All these people have the address (something)@aol.com. These contacts have come up as a result of my gmail connection. You see, a few months ago Gmail and AIM did this chat unification process where @aol.com contacts can be just added into Gmail for chatting. These @aol.com copies come up asking for an invite when the REAL AIM address person talks to me. The invites leave once I press decline, but then they stay on my list as not authorized. If I delete these "not-authorized" copies, the invites will come up again and the cycle will repeat. It is a nuisance considering how much of these false contacts are on my list.
Second problem is video/audio chat in general. This issue really applies on AIM/Yahoo—there is nothing for Gmail because people usually use the web interface which simply doesn't work with iChat video/audio. If the people used Google talk, the issue written below would probably come up.
See, what happens is that…(now in 10.7.3), video/audio chat is simply broken, simple as that. My contacts always tell me that an error has occurred when trying to accept my video chat invite. It simply doesn't work. They are using AIM desktop in most cases. When it DID used to work (to a very limited extent, I'll say; it was hit or miss earlier pre 10.7.3, now it's just miss), it was just video but NO audio. They could see/hear me, I could only see them. When I did audio chats, they hear me, I..don't hear them (so audio chats were pointless). The only case where this problem doesn't happen is where it's Mac to Mac, iChat to iChat. VERY limited in use of audio/video chat, if you ask me.

    Hi,
If AIM contacts have been added to your Google Buddy List then I would login to Google and remove them from there  (the iGoogle or GoogleMail web pages will show the Chat option)
Whilst they are still in the List then the Authorization request will probably be resent (In this case it is probably being generated by the method Google are using to add the AIM names as iChat only sends it once).
Google/Jabber Video chats is only iChat to iChat and so is Yahoo with iChat 6.
The Yahoo App streams Video which People can be allowed to see and Audio is added in as an Audio Chat.
The connection Process is not the same and iChat/AIM
Jabber and Google use Jingle to Connect (in fact Google's version is not that compatible with other Jabber apps).
This means iChat to the Standalone PC app  or any Web Browser using the Google Video Plug-in (PC or Mac) or to any Jabber app that is using a Google ID (or a Jabber ID) will not work.
On the iChat to AIM on a PC.
This has always been a bit of a hit and miss affair.
Some people have no trouble but other spend ages trying to set things up and never find the solution.
This is the Original Users Tip  (up to about AIM5.9)
A "replacement" for that tip that has not made it across yet.
I have yet to try Video to the Web Login version that is now on offer.
However I would limit the Bandwidth in iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section to 500kbps (possibly try 200kbps for 1-1 chats) as you will not know the interent speed available to the Buddy if they are using the web login.
    Comparisons
When you compare iChat actual functions to what you would like it to do it can appear to be limited.
On the basis that you would want your IM app to be able to have Buddies from other services listed in a Buddy list (combined) or Lists which apps do you know of can do that and Video to some of them ?
Adium and ProteusX can both have Buddies from the major Services ina  Buddy List but don't do Audio or Video.
Yahoo and MSN both allow the other's Buddies in the list but I am not sure about Video or Audio chats
They cannot connect to Jabber or AIM buddies even for text chats.
Jabber does depend on the server you use and whether that does Transports for you to have text chats with other services.
    Instructions for iChat.
Mercury IM is a JAVA version of MSN and still has not got to Audio and Video
    Similar for aMSN
    Gizmo5 and YakforFree both died...
Skype is Cross Platform  but is only 1-1 in Video chat.  (cost extra for 3 and 4 way chats)
Yahoo had dropped support for their Mac version now iChat has the Yahoo option  (you can still download it  - IT being the beta it has been for  years).

  • Error message after upgrade to iTunes 11: "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly."  At this point my PC running XP loses all audio.

Several attempts to upgrade to iTunes 11 have failed.  After an upgrade to 11 the error message reads: "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly."  At this point--after the upgrade to iTunes 11--my PC running Windows XP loses audio playback for all functions--in iTunes, in the browser and the volume icon disappears from the System Tray.  Only by removing iTunes 11, and then using System Restore to turn back the OS settings can I return the PC to normal functioning.
I did that.  I reinstalled iTunes 10.5.  Everything seemed fine, but when I try to plug in and copy a CD to my iPhone 4S an error message reads roughly: 'iPhone 4S requires iTunes 10.5 or higher to work.'
What might be the problem with my audio configuration?
Why doesn't my iPhone 4S work with iTunes 10.5?  It used to work with iTunes 10.5.
    Please advise.
