Audio volume not save and keyboard layout configuration problems

Hello all,
I needed to register again because my old account seems not to be working
After almost 2 years without Arch due to work now I'm back to Arch again.
Everything has changed... now there is Systemd and even the installation it's different so I will need some helps from the experienced users
The installation was done yesterday and I found two issues that are really annoying me.
The first one... keyboard layout... Yes it's incredibly... I only want my system in english and my keyboard in norwegian... But all are problems for that. Before telling me to read more or search for information.... I will tell you that I waster 2 hours yesterday only for that... With no success at all.
The second one... even more stupid... why my pulseaudio keep the volumen at 100%? I tried different things... but not success at all.
So please, can you help me?
I will provide all the information you need.
Thanks a lot and so happy to be back here
Best regards,
TheArcher

Hello Runical,
To be honest I was following a guide to install the system and everything works ok but according to journalctl I have some problems with pulseaudio so I guess that can be the original problem.
I will paste it here:

I am trying to save a large file on Illustrator CS6 and it does not save and instead says "Unknown Error Occurred." What do I do?
The file has 4 artboards with webpage designs. I tried to take two of the artboards, create a separate doc with those two, and save, but the result was the same.
However, I am able to save simpler, smaller files.
I need to not lose these files and I am afraid to quit and restart and lose my unfinished work.
    Any advice?

What happens if you choose this option?

Hi. I saved the contacts from previous phone onto the sim. I'm going to 'Import SIM Contacts". After I've imported the contacts and go to Contatcs after that they are all there, but they seem to disappear again as if they're not saved. This happens no matter how many times I import them.

  • [E17] lock and keyboard layout problems when suspend

    Hello,
I just installed E17 on my Dell Vostro laptop. The main problem I have is related to the suspend mode.
In settings > screen > screen lock, I enabled the option "lock on suspend" and the keyboard layout is selected to "be (default, basic)" (I have a belgian keyboard).
When I use the menu system > suspend, the screen is locked. But when I suspend my laptop by closing the lid (I see the power light indicator blinking on the side, so it's suspended) the screen is not locked when I open it.
Also related to the suspend mode. The layout is set to belgian (in the screen config as explained above but also in vconsole.conf and in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-keyboard.conf). When I put the luks decryption key or when E17 starts at boot, I have the right layout. However when I resume the laptop after being suspended, the layout is switched to qwerty (en_us I guess).
    Any idea why ?
    Thank you
PS: this problem is maybe more related to E17 than to Archlinux but I haven't found any forum about enlightenment. If you think I have better chances somewhere else, let me know.

I was having problems with E17 after a fresh install (mixer problem, key bindings, etc), and I fixed it by deleting the configuration files at
    ~/.e
    as the wiki says.

  • Some questions about using non-english characters and keyboard layouts

I've found a lot of guides about how to enable characters in Linux, and that is easy enough, but I want to understand it better.
The way that I understand it, if you don't enable a given set of characters in locale.gen, then in theory you should not be able to either use or display a that set of characters in any programs (however, certain programs, like web-browsers seem to have work arounds).
Furthermore, in order to be able to type characters in X programs, you need to enable those keyboard setups in your xorg.conf (in addition to enabling those locales in locale.gen).  I don't think that this effects the displaying of characters
Then, Last, you need a way to switch back and forth between different keyboard layouts within your X environment in order to type those characters. There are programs to assist in switching keyboard layouts provided by some DE's.  By using these keyboard layout tools, I alter the behaviour of all programs started in X.  (for example, swithing keyboard layouts in gnome's settings will alter the behaviour of kde programs, firefox and openoffice.)
    How close am I?
    A few more questions:
If I'm a Spanish student which locales do I need to enable.  There is a long list of locales that start with ES, and I don't know if there are any drawbacks to enabling unnecessary locales. I think that the ones that I need are es_ES* (Spanish spanish?) and es_MX* (Mexican spanish?).
What is do the *@EURO locales do?
what does the locale setting in rc.conf do?

  • IPhone volume not working and showing "Headphones"

When I try to change the volume on my iPhone it shows "Headphones" even if they're not plugged or connected via Bluetooth (I'm sure there's nothing connected) and behaves accordingly (e. g. playing audio only when there is a phone call). With headphones plugged in it works fine, playing normal audio on the headphones and phone call ringtone on the headphones and on the iPhone speaker.
I'm noticing this since I opened a game called "Dark Echo", that I've played only with headphones, without using headphones. The game says in the title screen "Headphones recommended". I don't know if this is the cause. I'm also pretty sure it isn't a hardware problem caused by dropping food or liquids on the headphone jack because the area around the jack is clean.
I tried restarting the phone, deleting the game, reinstalling the game, cleaning the jack gently with a microfiber cloth, plugging and unplugging headphones, blowing in the jack, playing media and changing the sounds and music settings.
My hypotheses are that it is an iOS 8.2 problem, a problem of the game or a hardware problem.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue and how can I resolve it?

I resolved this issue by cleaning the jack with a microfiber cloth, blowing and plugging and unplughing headphones again.

  • Application hotkeys and keyboard layouts in KDE[SOLVED]

    Hi,
For as long as I use Linux, I've been annoyed by this particular trouble: change layout from en to ru, for instance, and get your hotkeys (like Ctrl-S) unresponsive. Granted, that the trouble sometimes goes - to come back later on . I tried Google, but no luck. Which is kinda funny, because any bilingual user must be all too familiar with the issue. I can't even be sure whether it's some systemwide setting or an application responsibility.
Now I've run into a something like a perfect testcase :
    OpenOffice 3.0.1 and Firefox 3.0.8:
    (1) In Arch the hotkeys like Ctrl-S and Ctrl-T work in both apps regardless of the keyboard layout. (KDE3 and KDE4)
    (2) In Pardus the hotkeys in both apps work in en layout but do not in ru layout. (KDE3)
    What is it?
Last edited by Llama (2009-04-05 13:27:48)

Control Center(KDE)->Keyboard Layout->Layout->Include latin layout checkbox needs to be checked. After that Command lines for the respective layouts look like
    setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us
setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout ru,us -variant ,winkeys
    The trouble's gone.

  • Not work 3 keyboard layouts

Then I use 2 languages,  Option          "XkbLayout"     "us,lt" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then work keyboard layout.
If I use 3 languages in XkbLayout, then not work layout.
    There some part of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
    Section "InputDevice"
            Identifier      "Generic Keyboard"
            Driver          "kbd"
            Option          "CoreKeyboard"
            Option          "XkbRules"      "xorg"
            Option          "XkbModel"      "pc105"
            Option          "XkbLayout"     "us,lt,ru"
            Option          "XkbOptions"    "grp:alt_shift_toggle"
    EndSection

You didn't tell what's your problem is though. I suppose you just cannot switch layouts with Alt-Shift, right?
Try if Shift-Alt (sic!) works for you. Also try grp:ctrl_shift_toggle (only RightCtrl-Right shift work, LeftCtrl-LeftShift switches to first layout instantly).
    alikas wrote:So it is bug?
Yes. Both xkeyboard-config 0.6 and 0.9 are buggy, but bugs are triggered for specific keyboard layout combinations.
For example, I had bug with 0.6 with my xorg config, while many others don't.
0.9 fixed bug for me, but now other people have problems.
As you may see in that bug report the problem mostly depends on XkbLayout combination, though I thought it was due to grp:alt_shift_toggle first.

  • VNC into Mac and keyboard layout

    Hi,
I'm trying to get keyboard layout mapping to work between the mac mini which is the VNC server and any remote VNC clients (linux, windows, mac). Tried ultravnc, tightvnc, realvnc clients. And 10.5.x built-in as well as Vine VNC servers. The mini has an Alphagrip keyboard with US+Finnish layouts. The client PCs have Finnish layout typically, also US or German.
Problem is that any pipe, tilde, @ etc "special" characters typed through the clients end up as umlauts or other characters in the VNC.
Any suggestions how I could make VNC work so that the VNC keyboard layout is always the client layout?
    Thanks,
    - Jan

    Thanks for pointers!
Setting "US" in OSXvnc did not work with any local client-side layout, oddly not even EN/US local + EN/US remote with OSXvnc use either "US" or "Current Layout".
But the following nearly works. Client Finnish keyboard, server Mac Mini Finnish keyboard, for the ultraVNC client change Finnish/FI to US winxp locale (using XP's/Vista's Language Bar), in OSXvnc choose "Current Layout" and set global Mac layout to Finnish.
I.e. have same keyboard at both ends but set the "wrong" US locale in WinXP for the ultraVNC client.
Now nearly everything works (with this laptop and server) - all umlauts and special characters. The only and unfortunately also critical problem is that the key "|" does not "work", it outputs "'*" instead. On the Mac the key is on the left of spacebar, on the client on the right. I don't see how this alone could change the scancodes. But apparently it does. Because it does not work.
Is there not some UTF / Unicode version of VNC for all OS X, Windows, Linux?
Or some VNC that would handle keyboard layouts smartly, transparent to the user?
Another option, IME with RDP (MS Terminal Services, rdesktop) there is no problem with keyboard layouts. Perhaps you guys know some RDP server for OS X?

  • [SOLVED] After a crash, my languages and keyboard layouts are gone!

So my CPU hanged, I rebooted, unfortunatelly a lot of my personal (and perhaps system) files were corrupted. All my personal GNOME settings were set to default. I had to wipe out the entire ~/.config/dconf folder in order to regain the capability to customize everything again. So all was left behind was my keyboard layout. So I went to `Regions and Languages` and... all but the system language (English) options were gone, including the layouts!
I just reinstalled the groups gnome and gnome-extra, no to avail
    What can I do?
edit: stupid me! The layouts were 'hidden' in the tiny window size of the thing!
