Audio yes but video no

Hi,
I just got a .mov file from a vendor and I can't get the video to play. I have the most recent Quicktime Pro for my Mac G5. The video itself when I dragged it over is about 680 megs, so something is there. But, when I double click and the quicktime browser comes up only the audio will play and the video is just a blank white screen. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi,
I looked in the inspector and found it was using a "vid meridien" codecc which turned out to be an Avid codec. I went to the Avid site & downloaded the codecc.

It worked!!!
I love it when things work. Thanks much!

Why when I play video it's loading and audio plays but video still loading?

  • Exporting video for iPod - audio OK but video is "white"

I know this issue has been raised before but I cannot find a clear resolution anywhere - happy to be pointed to the right place.
Some time ago I converted some old VHS home movies to DVD and they play fine. To view them via AppleTV I've converted them to MP4 using H.264/AAC via MEGUI, and they work fine in iTunes on the PC and on AppleTV.
Once they were in iTunes I tried converting them for iPod but the output is a blank white video screen though the audio is fine.
To diagnose the problem I tried loading the MP4 version directly into Quicktime (Version 7.6.8)where the play fine. Then I tried exporting them for iPod and I get the same white screen plus audio.
I've seen this issue dismissed as due to some form of DRM but I doubt that is the case here. The video is my own, the DVDs I created are not CSS protected and the MP4s are also unprotected.
I've also seen it attributed to a missing codec, but that is unlikely given both iTunes and Quicktime play the videos without a hitch.
Any clues on how to proceed?
    John

Last post before I leave things alone for a while.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and Quicktime and iTunes no longer chews up lots of CPU when trying to convert one particular Quicktime created file.
I've also recreated each file again from the same source, the AVI encoded as DV-PAL with screen res of 720x576. I created a series of test cases to try to pin the problem down and I think the best exposition is the following -
    The problem
An MPEG4 file exported from Quicktime loads and plays in iTunes, plays on AppleTV and can be converted for iPod.
An almost identical MPEG4 file created by MEGUI using the x264 encoder, latest build 1649, and all the same settings as Quicktime loads and plays in iTunes, plays on AppleTV but when converted for iPod produces a file with audio but the video is "white". Looking at the file size, less than 2mb, it is pretty obvious that the video stream is simply not there.
    Clues
Quicktime Movie Inspector reports the screen resolution of the file it exported as 720x540 while for the MEGUI created file it reports a very odd 787x576. Note that Windows Media Player and YAMB (MP4Box utility) both report this same file as 720x576 which is what I would expect as MEGUI did not resize the video. As an aside, WMP and YAMB also report the Quicktime created file as 720x540 so they agree with Quicktime on that score at least.
    Obvious Question
Why does Quicktime report an incorrect screen resolution, and is this contributing to the conversion problem in iTunes?
My understanding is that MPEG4 uses 16x16 macroblocks and so the dimensions of anything to be encoded must be in multiples of 16 and 787 is not a multiple of 16.
Of course, the 787x576 screen resolution could be a red herring.

  • Audio 24fps but video 25fps

    Hey out there,
I'm sure this thing has been covered out there somewhere. I've been looking but I need a fast answer.
    Here is my dilemma:
    Finished editing project (25fps)
sent out to sound person he sent me back audio ac3 file in 24fps. I can not get them to sync properly.
tried compressor and cinema tools to no avail. I thought I was technical enough but i guess not
any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Hey thrillcat,
Thanx for the response... I'm not sure why he sent me ac3 file as well. Maybe he thought i was going straight to dvd studio pro with the file. The sound person lives in Europe. All of our communication has been internet based. I have asked him to just send me Aiff stems in 25fps. That should solve our problems I hope? What do you think. Again thank you.!
P.S. This is going to DVD. Can I use the existing 24fps ac3 file in dvd studio pro? but then i would have to conform video from 25 fps to 24fps right? yikes.. not fun

  • IChat Screen Sharing:  Audio works but video is a white screen.

I am having a problem using iChat screen sharing with a specific computer.  We are both running OS 10.7.4.   I have a Mac Book Pro (fall 2011) and he has a iMac one to two years old.  We have tried contacting apple support but no luck yet.  We tried setting up a test user to see if the problem was user specific but encountered the same problem.  Again, video and text chat work fine.  He can share my screen with no issues.  Only when I ask to share his screen do I get a blank white screen.  Audio works and I can manipulate his curser but all I have is a white screen.  I have tried changing the resolution on his iMac but this has not helped.  Also we are both using Google Talk as the chat server.

    Hi,
Historically iChat Updates came in OS updates.
Not every OS update had an iChat update but that was the way they were delivered.
Only twice during the lifetime of iChat 3 have there ever been standalone Updates outside of this.
Most Updates are now through the App Store but Software Update can still be used (I have mine set on Daily despite Apple's Updates normally coming on Tuesdays)
One person stated he thought there had been a change with OS 10.8.1 saying the Build number of Messages had changed.
In my experience it has not and when Apple do update something the build Number and Version number change.
It is widely know that Apple send Developers and others advance copies of the OS to try out.

  • Audio plays but Video stays stuck on a frame

I use FCP7.  The media is a .mov, Frame Size:  720 x 405, Frame Rate 23.98, Pixel Ratio Square, Compressor AppleProRes 422, 48 kHz at 16bit, converted through MPEG Streamclip from an H264 file made from a DVD.
All I'm trying to do is cut off the first 2min of the file:  Color Bars, Countdown Leader and Slate.
I Restarted FCP:  that brought on the Video which was not there before.  But now the video stays motionless.  Anybody knows a solution?  A thousand thanks.

Take a look at the chart near the top of this page: https://documentation.apple.com/en/motion/usermanual/index.html#chapter=B%26sect ion=5%26tasks=true
720 x 405 isn't one of the listed pixel dimensions.  I'd recommend that you re-convert the original h.264 video file(s) to the proper dimensions.

  • Audio plays but video does not........HDV

I have quicktime clips on my Macbook that are HDV 1080i format. When I try and play them in quicktime just the audio plays.....no video. Now I also have an iMac G5 desktop and quicktime plays these clips without problem. When I try to play them from my macbook a box pops up and says some components may be missing and it directs me to this web page:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html
From here I don't know what to download in order to make it play my HDV clips.
please help. Thank you very much
    iMacG5/MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

AIC is required to view High Definition video on the Mac OS and it should already be installed on your machine.
Open the file using QuickTime Player. Open the Movie Info window (Command-i) and report back what it shows for the video codec.
You can test HD playback of known "good" files by viewing any of the HD trailers from this link: http://www.apple.com/trailers/
If they work as they should then the problem is with your HD file and not your computer.

  • Downloaded a movie (mpeg-4) from youtube and I only have audio and no video.  it plays on another pc but not this one.  please help.

    Hi,
I downloaded the latest free version of quicktime.  I am trying to play a movie (mpeg-4) that was downloaded from youtube.  It plays fine on my other pc, but I only get audio and no video when I open it on this pc. It shows up like static lines on a tv that has bad reception.  Can anyone offer some suggestions please?  I need to play it on thislaptop computer as I require it for a school presentation.  Thank you.

It plays fine on my other pc, but I only get audio and no video when I open it on this pc. It shows up like static lines on a tv that has bad reception.
Open your QuickTime control panel (either via the Control panels, or by going "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences" in the Quicktime Player). In the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable Direct3D video acceleration:
... and click OK. Quit and restart the QuickTime Player prior to checking to see if the settings change has had any effect.

  • Changed TV out to off but ipod still only plays audio and no video

Just recently my ipod decided not to play video. All the videos in the video folders are gone and now appear in the music folder. Even the video podcasts no longer appear in the video podcast folder. I have changed the TV to out to off and still it continues to do the same thing. I am not sure what happened, I don't believe I changed any settings or anything. I would hate to reset the ipod and lose everything. Need help, thanks.

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?

  • Can hear audio, but video blacks out every few seconds; picture comes back when we hit the tv's volume button

We can hear audio, but video blacks out every few seconds; picture comes back when we hit the tv's volume button. Everything seems to be plugged in well. The picture even starts out being sort of dim. And it goes through phases of working fine but then will randomly start blacking out again.  Any ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Have you tried turning the TV off and on again.

  • Audio works in audio chat, but not in video chats.

So, when I start an audio chat with a friend, we can hear each other just fine. I then switch over to a video chat, and she can hear me, but I can't hear her. I already had to do all sorts of port forwarding in the firewall settings and router in order to rid myself of error -8... this is kind of frustrating!
I fixed the problem a week or so back by simply restarting iChat. When I tried that this time, no dice. Any ideas? Seems odd that it would work in audio chat but not in video chat...

I am having the same issue. Last night my sister and I did a video chat (which took some doing- we are both neophytes which it comes to this technology). It was great! But we had no audio. So we typed our conversation for quite awhile till my sister turned on her speakers...... Then she could hear me!! Now we were excited. But I never could hear them. On the video window there were 3 icons at the bottom, one being a microphone icon which had a line through it. So we are assuming the audio problem is on her end (she's using a Dell) and not at my end (since she could hear me)- is that correct? I checked all my settings and I had my speakers on the whole time with the volume maxed out. I could hear clicks when she wiggled something on her speakers but that was it. Any clue what she needs to check? I know I am posting in a Mac forum but we are giving it try again tomorrow and it would be nice to hear her. I know that there are plenty of us Mac users that have relatives that use PC's so maybe someone might have an answer. Will keep searching though. Judy
