Audiobook playback position

I recently purchased a couple of audiobooks from itunes. I noticed that the iphone does not remember the position when you stopped listening if you play any audio file after you stopped listening. If i pause and quit go through my day and then listen again later it will remember its position. But if I open another audiobook, song, etc the music app will forget where it left off in the audiobook and start from the beginning every single time. This is very annoying and seems like something obvious so I dont think apple would overlook it. Can anyone replicate this problem?

It comes and goes.  The last audiobook I listened to (finished just today) it had no problem.  When it quits working it seems to be soon after an update, I've never figured out what makes it start working again.

  • Audiobook playback position sync to iPhone

I've been listening to audiobooks via my iPhone, and I just purchased a little nano to use while exercising. I synced my iPhone to iTunes to get the latest playback position for my audiobook, then synced my new nano to iTunes and added the audiobook, which started playing at the proper position. Nice.
I finished my exercise, synced my nano, and iTunes now has the updated position (I played the book in iTunes to be sure). Then I synced my iPhone to get the latest position on that unit, and it didn't work. It was still way back where it was. Not nice.
How do I get the iPhone to pick up the new playback position of my audiobook?
    Mac OS 10.7.2
    iTunes 10.5.1
    iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

So I was having the hardest time getting my audible books onto my iPhone and iPad with iTunes 11 and iOS 7.  I dragged them into a play list and synced them, but when I looked on the iPhone they did not import.
So what I did to get it to work was to chose the book (Highlight) I wanted to import, then get the information (command + I), then choose Options tab, then change the Media Kind from Audiobook to Music.
Then sync again and it will import to the device.

  • How can I get an audiobook's playback position synced between Mac and iPhone?

I have several Audible audiobooks, both on my iMac and on my iPhone. I listen to the audiobook on either the computer or the phone, depending on the circumstances. Both the iMac and the iPhone will independently remember the playback position within the audiobook, but I cannot get them to sync those playback positions to each other. So if I'm on chapter 2 on the iMac, listen for a couple of hours, and end at chapter 4, then the Mac will remember the correct playback position when I return to the book, but if I sync the iPhone to the Mac, and check the audiobook on the phone, it is still at the playback position it was the last time I listened to the book on the phone. Should the playbook position in the audiobook sync when the phone is synced to the computer via iTunes? I've tried both wired and wireless syncs, and that doesn't seem to make a difference on my case. Should this work, and if so, is there a particular setting that I'm missing?

I am tracking the movement of various objects by subtracting the current image from the previous image and displaying the result.  Anything that moves is white and anything that doesn't is black.  I then have vision assistant give me a list of particles and their pixel positions based on certain criteria.  I then use the data from my two cameras pointing at 45 degrees inward in order to triangulate the object's 3-D position in space (this takes a few steps).  Then I use the frame rate of the camera and the scalar distance between an object in multiple frames to determine its scalar and vector velocities.  All of this is done in real time.
I  was originally having issues with the pixel positions but have since wrote a vi that interprets a matrix of the pixel positions which then feeds them into my position/velocity vi.
The vi I attached is built to work with my "bitflow alta frame grabber" so feel free to ask questions if anything is not understood.
My new task has been to develop a way to only track one object at a time, and have that object be the same object in both cameras.

  • Audiobook Not Remembering Playback Position

In iTunes 9.2, when marked as "Audiobook" itunes no longer remembers playback position. Both Playback position and skip when shuffling are grayed out, however they aren't checked. I put the files back in as "music: and manually checked "remember playback" and it worked fine.
Anyone else run into this? I have tried it on home and work computer.

Never mind, figured it out. You have to select all the files, cannot change it per individual file.

  • IOS Music app forgets playback position for audiobooks

The iOS music app on my phone repeatedly is losing playback position for audiobooks. I go to the Music app > Audiobooks > BookTitle  and get to a menu where I see part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, and part 1 says, below the title/author listing, says
    8:53:58  6hr 49 min left
And I touch the title to start it playing, and it shows the little red marker on the progress bar at about the right position for 2 hours having been played, and as often as not, there is a little flash and then the red marker is back at the far left side and it starts playing again at the beginning.
These are books from various sources--today's example was a Librivox download, others have been books on CD, and checking in iTunes verifies that they have been correctly coded as audiobooks and 'remember playback position' is automatically checked.
It's a PITA hunting through an 8 hour long recording with only the crude control of the little progress bar and 15 second skip forward/back to find the spot I left off.
It doesn't happen with the same titles in iTunes on the computer.

Clicked reply by accident, and now can't edit the post.
Has anyone else seen the same problem?
These are books from CDs or librivox recordings, linked into one or a few multiple-hour files with Join Together.  I have never bought an audiobook from iTunes so don't know if those are handled better.

  • IPod shuffle forgetting playback position with audiobooks

My iPod shuffle (2nd gen) sometimes forgets my place in the audiobook I'm listening to. The only solution I've found is to go into File > Get Info > Options> Start Time and set a start time. It's annoying to have to do this manually every time I listen to the book. Is there a way to improve the memory of my iPod, or is this a common glitch? Should I buy a newer or different iPod? I.e., does the iPod nano or iPod touch have a way to advance the playback position from the iPod, i.e., when I'm out and my iPod isn't plugged into my computer?

    Hello Thomas,
Have you double checked to make sure you have the *Remember Playback* position enabled for each of your audiobook tracks in iTunes from under the Options tab of the *Get Info* window as well?

  • ITunes 7.0 ignoring "Remember playback position"

I've been encountering an issue where iTunes 7.0 is ignoring last marked playback position on files with "Remember playback position" set. The files in question are on my iPod. I can't put my finger on it, but I have for certain encountered this anomaly more than three times, with different files (all are mp3 podcasts from different sources). Instead of resuming playback where I left off, it begins playback starting at the beginning of the file.
Has anyone else been encountering this? If so, is there any workaround for this or should it be placed on top of the growing heap of iTunes 7.0 bugs?

So glad to at least find others that are having this problem. It's driving me crazy! I wish I had a fix, but even the Apple reps at MacWorld didn't have a solution.
This happened when I upgraded to iTunes 7. My "Remember Playback Position" is checked but greyed out.
Possibly related, when I first disconnect the iPod, the audiobooks show up inside the top level "Audiobooks" category. If I listen to one of them, then go listen to a song, then go back to the Audiobooks category, the books are now gone! I can get to them by browsing through Artists but it's definitely not the expected behavior.

  • Can you make "Remember Playback Position" the default?

I mostly listen to audiobooks. When I take a CD and rip it, I always have to change the Option to "Remember Playback Position." After a few thousand times, this becomes tiresome. Is there any way to make "Remember Playback Position" the default option in iTunes? I am using iTunes 11.0.2.

Strongly recommend Context Search extension which will solve your problem

  • Is the iPod touch 4g supposed to remember playback positions reached in iTunes?

    Mine doesn't.
Playback position appears to be one-way - iPod to iTunes.
I've stopped listening to large files (long podcasts, audiobooks) in iTunes because I have to manually return to the same position after my iPod is disconnected from iTunes.
My old iPod classic doesn't have the problem - so I'm assuming this is a software issue.
    Thanks

The answer according to the local Apple Genius bar is - iTunes doesn't send last playback position to the iPod touch device.

  • Playlist- disable shuffle and remember playback position?

Hi, I dont know if you can do this but I have one playlist for audiobooks that i have via Mp3's and some radio shows i've recorded.
At the moment I have some apple scripts i downloaded to do batch 'remember position' and 'skip shuffle' settings, but is there anyway or script i can get to automatticly set any mp3 dropped on to a given playlist to give them these settings?
    Thanks
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Yes... I use mine (1st Gen and 2nd Gen shuffles) exclusively for audiobooks from various sources. I ALWAYS make sure that they are set in GetInfo>Options to "remember playback position". I listen daily and often pause, turn off then on and resume during that listening period.

  • Can I change 'remember playback position'?

I imported a CD and then I marked its tracks in iTunes as an audiobook (since it was an audiobook). Later I noticed that the "remember playback position" checkbox had been not only checked automatically -- I hadn't checked it -- but also grayed out / disabled. While it's true that usually I like my audiobook tracks to remember playback positions, sometimes I don't (some tracks in audiobooks are quite short, or I always want to start at the beginning of a track to keep the author's flow of thought). I don't remember noticing this on tracks I imported even last month.
    Is this a recent change?
Is there a way to change a particular track so that it will always start at the beginning instead of in the middle?
    Thanks!

Not from within the OS. I don't know if there is a third-party hack that will do that.

  • IOS 5 Music doesn't remember playback position

    Hi everyone,
I upgraded my iPhone 4 with the new IOS 5 and I noticed that after I stop playing my audiobooks Music doesn't remember the playback position when I start it back again.. is it a bug or am I doing something wrong? With the IOS 4 it worked perfectly, it remember the playback position and it also pointed out the minutes left for the audiobook.. Btw, I checked the "Remember playback position" on the audiobook file in iTunes, so it should work.. Please help me..
    Thank you

I am having the same problem and surprised that no matter how much I google the question I only end up with one or two sparse threads like this with 'NO RESPONSES/ANSWERS'. I will try sending the question to the 'Today In IOS' podacst ....

  • Forgetting playback position after using timer to stop playing

Prior to updating to ios 8 I would set the timer on the clock app to stop playing my music/audiobook after a set amount of time. Then in the morning, I could turn on the music app again and continue playing the album or audiobook from where it had stopped.
Since the update it doesn't seem to be remembering the playback position, however I only have this problem when I've used the timer. If I manually pause the song, then it remembers as "now playing". I've been scouring the internet and no one else seems to be experiencing this. I updated to 8.1 and I'm still having this problem. I went into itunes and checked Get Info --> Options --> Remember playback position.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem using Apple's Music and Clock apps on iPhone 6, iOS 8.1.  I don't know why this changed, as I had been using this function for years on previous iPhones / iOS to play audio-books at night, and then easily find the place where I dozed off the next night.
While I try to keep the array of apps on my phone limited to Apple originals, this problem led me to explore. And I found that 2 free apps - 1. Music Timer and 2. Beat - that allow me to do what I have always done previously with the Apple apps. That is, Beat plays a track until turned off by Music Timer, and then Beat resumes playing where it stopped the next evening. Read the on-screen directions before using these apps, and it is then simple.
I like the Beat interface a lot too, although you need to adjust to the fine tuning system that allows you to move backwards and forwards along a track. It has a clever circle system that requires holding the touch on the screen for a second or two before it activates. Much nicer then Apples Music app.

  • Music app doesn't remember last title or playback position after upgrading to iOS 8

    Hi!
Since upgrading to iOS 8 (and now 8.1) Apples music app on the iPhone 6 won't remember which title it was playing or the playback position.
I use to listen to music or audiobooks before going to sleep and I always set the timer to stop playing after some time. But when I get up in the morning and open the app again - it starts from scratch. I have to search for the title again and guess the time where I left off. This is really annoying and it worked just great in iOS 7.
    Anyone having the same problems?

I went to the apple store to try to see if they could fix my i-pod. They were not aware of this problem. Did not know if any work around.  Said they would report it and it would be fixed with one of the next upgrades.  Did suggest I delete all books and music on my i-pod, since it is backed up on my computer and reload it.  That this may work...it did not.

  • How to auto set remember playback position?

When adding MP3s to a playlist, is there a way to automatically set the "Remember playback position"?

    FYI:
Remember playback position is for starting the audio file where it left off, (good for audiobooks),  not which song the playlist was on.
