Audiobooks handling in itunes 8

Love the itunes 8 now handles audiobooks copied from CDs. You can now just change the media to audiobooks and it will sit in the right place, no longer suffering it in the music library. It also collates tracks into book file, fantastic! Only been waiting a year for this change. However when syncing with my ipod 5th gen the collated books return to track numbers! do I need to rename all my tracks or is this just a glitch to be fixed at some point in the future?

Hmm, I didn't know that iTunes 8 would collate chapter tracks into books. Still, I'm not sure I would like that. Apple will need to update the firmware on 80/160GB "old" iPod Classics before I would try it. I much prefer to collate the tracks myself into much larger larger files that split at around 8 to 9 hours.
Anyway, for a book series, I like to use the iTunes tags as follows:
Album Mame -> Series name
Album Artist -> Book name
Disc # -> Book number in the series.
Track # -> Book part for books longer than 8 hours.
When I sort on Artist (Author) The books in a series get properly sorted by the Disc # (Book #). If I instead sort on Album, the books in a series are sorted alphabetically by the Album Artist (book name) which is not desired. The sorting field selected in iTunes in each series smart playlists I've created seems to be maintained on the iPod.
Enjoy life!

  • Anybody else finding that the iPod classic cannot handle their iTunes database?

I have a very complex database that heavily uses the smart playlists. I have playlists referencing playlists, etc. and the last 2 operating systems can't handle it. I've got way too many hours behind my iTunes database and I'm unwilling to throw it out to use the iPod. It works great on my machine, allowing me to create well balanced and interesting playlists that are broad and diverse. My database used to work on the iPod. The problem arose with the instalation of a new iPod operating system back over a year ago. The installation killed my iPod and Apple refused to consider that the upgrade was responsible and called it coincidence. Since then an iPod will only work until I make some small mistake, like trying to use the Genius or plugging it into my computer and making some change in my iTunes database. Then it's back to disk mode, erase, reboot, reload and eventually replace.
Apple dismisses the idea that there is some software or hardware flaw causing the trouble. They claim that the iPod software will handle any iTunes database that is functional and fits on the iPod with a little extra room. They have replaced my iPod 4 times in the last 6+ months under the now impossible idea that I am receiving a series of flawed machines. These iPods sits in my glove compartment of my car and suffer no abuse. Since the last OS update, I can only load an iPod by importing my music in smaller chunks, a day long process at best. A full load of the database kills a new iPod immediately. My last time through tech support we came up with this technique as a way to isolate a potential bad song or album. Everything loaded fine in chunks and the iPod handled everything until a made a change to one of the songs and it went into eternal Apple mode and was replaced at the store. I am pretty convinced that Apple is wrong on this one and that the iPod software or hardware is not robust enough to handle what you can do in iTunes. Anyone else have a similar problem? Anyone at Apple care to look a little more carefully at the problem as a learning tool?

  • I have a number of audiobooks in my itunes library.  Can they be stored in the cloud via itunes match or only music?

I have a number of audiobooks in my Itunes library.  Can they be stored in the Cloud via Itunes match?  All of the info refers only to "music".

They cannot be stored on icloud at all

I have a number of audiobooks purchased through iTunes on my iPod touch.  Is there a way to move or download them to the Cloud so that I can access them on other devices?

Thanks - I didn't realize that.  I'm also embarrassed to admit that I don't know how to transfer the audio files from my iPod to the iTunes library on my computer.  When I select a book from the list on the iPod, the only option I see with the right-facing arrow symbol is "Show in iTunes Store ".  I back the iPod up to this computer so I guess those files must be on it somewhere, but all I can recognize in the iTunes folder under " Music"  are the music files found in the "iTunes Music" folder. (There are also a ton of files named "iTunes Temp (some #).) The Books list on the computer shows some but not all of the audiobooks -  I purchased the rest on a different computer that is now unfortunately dead. I'm guessing now that those didn't transfer over when the new computer was populated from the old one, so the iPod may be the only place where those audiobooks now reside.  I hope that made some sense- any additional advice would be appreciated.

  • Audiobooks purchased from iTunes store doesn't show up in most audiobook apps

I purchased my first audiobook recently.  I saw it at Amazon on my pc, but decided to purchase it at iTunes (on my pc) because I figured I'm going to be transferring it & listening to it on my iPhone so I might as well purchase it at iTunes.  Well, I'm wondering if that was a wise decision because I'm finding that the audiobook I just purchased can’t be located in most audiobook apps.  There are a few apps that can play it.  For example:
The default Music app in my iPhone:  but the disadvantage is that it doesn’t seem to have the bookmark feature which is probably the most important feature for audiobooks.
Audible: This is the app from Amazon which found the audiobook but all the chapters have been removed since it was purchased from iTunes.  Had I purchased it directly from Audible/Amazon, then the chapters would have remained intact.
Most other audiobook apps are more interested in having you sign up with them and getting your audiobooks from them.  That’s fine but it seems counter-intuitive that they don’t play existing audiobooks you may have purchased from somewhere else (like iTunes).  I’m actually surprised the iPhone doesn’t come with a default audiobooks player (with bookmark feature).
So for now I plan to stick with the Audible app and purchase future audiobooks from there (in order to keep the chapters intact).  Can anyone recommend any other way to do it or another app that will play audiobooks purchased from iTunes that have a bookmark feature and keeps all the chapters intact?
    iPhone 5
    iOS 7.0.2

Regarding the default Music app in my iPhone, I also play alot of songs in that app.  If I play a song after I listen to the audiobook, wouldn't it last stop at the song instead of the audiobook?  That's why a real bookmark feature would be nice and that's why I'm surprised Apple didn't come out with such an app.

  • Why can't I transfer my audiobooks to my itunes account from my ipad?

  • Audiobook download from iTunes stuck on "processing"..

This morning tried to download an audiobook from the iTunes Store on to my iPad and it's got stuck at "Processing"... Where it's now been sat for the past three hours!
I've enough space on the iPad for the download and I'm using my home wifi. I've tried doing a reboot of the iPad and thought that had sorted it - when I went back into the iTunes 'Download' section it again counted up through the download, only to get stuck again at "Processing". Never had this problem before when downloading music, movies, TV, or other audiobooks. Any ideas, anyone?

Further to this - I made the mistake of tapping in a couple of places and it's now vanished altogether! There's now no "Downloads" section to see in iTunes, it's not listed anywhere in my Audiobooks section my music library. When I've gone back to the iTunes Store, it's like I've never even purchased it (even though I've had my receipt through from Apple)!

  • Switched from vista to W7 and can't locate my audiobook files in iTunes. help

My Vista os crashed, and I'm now using Windows 7 on the same desktop computer. I am not a teenager, considerably older!, and thus technology is not intuitive. I had backed up my files before the crash, and had music, but mostly audiobooks in my iTunes file. Now that I'm in Windows 7, and have downloaded iTunes again, how do I get to my old iTunes files? please help.

I'm suspecting that you're not using iPhoto properly.
    1) Create a temporary folder on the desktop and put the pics there.
    2) Open iPhoto and use the "Import" function to access the photos.

  • How do I get audiobooks into my iTunes "books"?

Hi - I have recently been downloading audiobooks online from my town's local library. To get them onto my iTunes and iPod, I pull down "File"  -  Add to Library. Then I find my book on my desktop and import it into my iTunes Library. How do I get my audiobook into my iTune "Books" in my Library - instead of being part of my music?

  • Although I purchased an audiobook directly from iTunes I cannot get it onto my 4th gen. shuffle. Any advice?

I just purchased an audiobook  from itunes and I cannot get it on my ipod shuffle 4th gen.  I can get music on it just fine and i have the newest versions of my ipod's software and of itunes.  Any help is appreciated.

Thank you for the advice.  I attempted this but found that when i selected my ipod from the device list i only had the option to autofill from a certain tab. I tried to use the recently  added tab which contained exactly the audiobook and songs i wanted but the shuffle would not accept the audiobook.  The itunes warning message claims i am unauthorized for the audiobook on my computer, however, i am signed into my own computer and itunes accounts (on which i purchased the audiobook)...

  • I put an audiobook into my itunes and the audiobook setting won't save, it goes back to Music. How can I fix this?

I put an audiobook into my Itunes and I have selected the setting as Audiobook instead of Music but the change doesn't stick. How can I make this work? I've updated all my software and still I can't get the setting to stay on Audiobook.
    Thanks!

You should be able to copy it over by connecting your phone to your computer's iTunes and doing File > Devices > Transfer Purchases - it should copy over to the Books part of your library

  • HT202213 Can I copy audiobooks purchased from itunes to a portable hard drive?

I need to transfer my audiobooks purchased from itunes to a new computer, can I do this with a portable hard drive?

Yes you can. If you want to move the whole of itunes then
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
Otherwise you can copy just the audiobook files and import them into the new iTunes. You may be asked to authorise that new computer

  • HT1296 How to move audiobook from computer iTunes to iPad 2?  Thank you.

How can I move audiobook from computer iTunes to iPad 2?  Thank you.

Connect and select your iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Books - if you select that tab you can then select which of the audiobooks that you have on your computer's iTunes to sync to the iPad's Music app (when you have audiobooks on the iPad you should get an Audiobooks option under the More button at the bottom of the Music app).

  • I would like to upload an audiobook from cd. iTunes uploads this as music even if I select "books & spoken". How to upload audiobooks?

I would like to upload an audiobook from cd. iTunes uploads this as music even if I select "books & spoken" as "CD info". How to upload audiobooks?

Thanks, but the given instructions (Audiobooks on iPods) do not apply to iPhone/iPad 7.0.2 on iTunes/Win 11.1.1.11. The software asks whether to import the CD, select the media type (and there is no "Audiobook" to select") - and starts importing. All the book appears among the music files.
-Or... once it has happened, is there a way to move it to audiobooks?
    OK
