Audiobooks & iTunes 9: Is anyone having luck playing them?

Since installing 9.0.1, audiobooks play as if I've got shuffle mode turned on. Of course, there is no option for doing that with audiobooks, so why won't they play in sequence?!
I've reported this as a bug to Apple, but I've seen only one other posting on this subject and it has just a few responses. I know a lot of people listen to audiobooks, so I'm wondering if I'm one of the "lucky" few who have this problem.
So, are your audiobooks, specifically those formatted in AAC with .m4b extensions (not Audible), working OK?

UPDATE: I'm using Doug Adams' excellent Join Together app as a workaround for the audiobooks shuffle problem.
The app joins the individual book files into a single chapterized file, so the shuffle problem doesn't apply. The major drawback is it takes 50 minutes to join 10 hours worth of audiobook together on my aging 2.7-GHz DP PowerMac.
On balance, even after Apple fixes the current problems with iTunes, I'll probably continue using Join Together, it's a lot more convenient than fussing with hundreds of short duration files.
The app is freeware, but I'm going make a donation after verifying it works on 10 books (5 books so far and no deal breakers!) Only problem so far is that, for some reason, even though I input the ID3 tag info before starting the combine process, I have to do it all over again after the file is imported into iTunes.

A number of people have reported similar issues recently, many appear to have found a discrepancy of some kind in their account settings and making changes to these settings or simply resetting them has resolved the matter.
Check your account details are correct, check that you are using the correct details for Location, Region and Time Zone. You may want to change these settings and then change them back to see if that helps.
Also check your payment details, make sure your details are exactly how they appear on your credit card statement, you might also try changing some of those details, saving them and changing them back again.
You might also try logging out of and then back into your iTunes account (Settings > iTunes Store > Apple ID’s > Sign Out) and restarting your router. (Some have reported that after doing this, they need to check for rentals even though it may report that there aren’t any, after which rentals once again appear in the ‘movies’ feature)
Rentals should appear under their own heading in the ‘Movies’ feature, you might also check at Settings > iTunes Store > Check For Rentals.
At this point in time, I’m wondering if this could be related to (but not restricted to) the new feature that allows others to come into your home and use your Apple TV to download and play their content on your Apple TV without logging into their account on your Apple TV. The Terms of Use for iTunes Store content have always been to require you to only purchase and play the content from the store in the location where you live and to use a credit card registered in that location. Previously Apple seem to have been somewhat lenient on enforcing such restrictions, perhaps now they are not. However I don’t really have any evidence to support this suggestion, except that changes made to accounts in these areas do appear to be helping many.
If you are successful in resolving your problem, perhaps you would let us know exactly which action resolved the problem for you. If you are having this problem to begin with, can you also tell us your location.

My iTouch will not show movies, but they are showing on my iTunes.  When I try and play them through my iTunes it freezes on me and does not work.  This problem only occurs whenever I am using my netbook.  It doesn't happen when I use a different computer.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes and am not sure what else to do from here.

You may have transferred all your songs, but your iPad is seeing the library as a different entity.

  • (iTunes 11.2) Anyone having trouble trying to quickly jump to an artist in the albums view?

Anyone having trouble trying to quickly jump to an artist in the albums view by pressing the first letter or the first few letters of that artist's name?
With this update it's like that feature doesn't work anymore or doesn't work like it used to.

I came here to write just this. The bug was introduced in 11.2 and not fixed in 11.2.1. When I start typing the artist's name in the albums view, it selects the first album by that artist correctly but scrolls to the wrong part of the library making the feature useless. To get around the bug, I press command+enter to start playing the selected album and then command+L to go to the now playing song.
Is there any way to downgrade in the meantime?

  • Is anyone having issues playing youtube on their apple TV

for the last 2 days my youtube on my apple TV is acting up anyone having the same issue

Well, the only real issue for me is that often I will be in the middle of my long list of subscriptions and it will just go back to the beginning, or jump around.
Then, for long periods it is fine.
I have found I can stop that by scrolling to the bottom of my list of subscriptions and start from the bottom up.
What issue are you having problems with?

  • Compusa brand dvd-r, anyone having issues with them?

Last September I bought a 50 pack of 2x DVD-r disks, Compusa brand. I've been trying to burn some disk images with my new macbook pro, which I created with idvd. I'm not having much luck with them. I get around one good burn after going through three or for disks.
Anyone else have poor results with their disks? Could someone recommend good quality disks? It's a 4x drive.

I use Memorex 8x single layer discs, Part # 3202 5601 - they burn fast and all have verified 100%

  • Anyone having problems playing Toy Story 3 - iTunes Extras ?

I've downloaded Toy Story 3 and the iTunes Extras won't work on my Apple TV.
It all plays fine on my iPad & MPB.
Deleted the iTunes extras file and it plays on ATV.
I raised with iTunes support who sent the file down again, however 2nd version also does not play.
Anyone else getting this issue ?

Other iTunes extras play just fine on my AppleTV - just Toy Story 3 does not.

  • Is anyone having problems playing games on their 4th gen nano?

Honestly, what a joke. I download the game Phase, only after being instructed at the top of the page that it will work fine with my 4th gen ipod. I pay for it and load it on, and the screen is a quarter chopped off. It's moved so far to the right of screen that I can't play it properly.
Anyone had the same issue? Anyone know how to fix it?

Afraid not...plays smooth as butter on my 16 GB nano. Admittedly the controls feel weird having the click wheel on the left/right of the screen instead of below...but its a minor quibble.
You might have an actual problem with your nano. Tried any other games? If they work fine (not the ones that come with the nano, other Click-wheel games from the Store), then you might want to either a) Try removing Phase, syncing, disconnecting, reconnecting and putting Phase back on the iPod, or b) Ask Apple to let you redownload Phase.
Or c) Return the nano for another one. But of course, thats always the last resort if its just a software problem...

  • ITunes authorizes the songs but cannot play them!

I just upgraded to Vista. Many of my purchased songs work fine. But when I try to play some songs, iTunes asks to authorize it. I do this. It says the authorization was succesful. But when I try to do this again, it goes back to the authorization screen!
    Please help.

Same here...but none of my songs will play that were purchased. Just upgraded to Vista today...
I've tried everything except uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes...

  • I just bought a new iPhone 5 and I downloaded my songs from iTunes. now when i go to play them, it says URL not found in server.

    Helppppp!!

You'll have to contact iTunes store support regarding your credit card information problem: http://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html.  I'm not clear on what you're saying about your backup.  Are you saying that when you connect to iTunes it's asking you to restore from backup even though you already have?

  • Mystery of why itunes won't play certain songs - quicktime plays them fine

    symptoms:
most of my songs play normally.
the songs that don't play do show up normally in itunes playlist. when i try to play them, however, itunes skips over them immediately and moves on to the next file in the playlist.
this is not a standard "file not found"-type of error. no error message appears. the songs do NOT get a little grey exclamation on them afterwards.
after being skipped, the last played date and play count of the song file is updated in my library as though itunes thinks it played the song normally.
if right-click on the song in itunes and say "show sound file", the file is visible in the finder. if i view a preview in the finder, i CAN PLAY THE FILE FROM THE FINDER PREVIEW window, which makes this whole situation very odd.
i can also open the files and play them in quicktime player.app. they play fine.
the songs in question seem to be mostly old (~5 yrs) files that were encoded in a very old version of itunes (before it was called itunes) called soundjam. still i am pretty sure they are valid mp3 files. i'm quite sure that i have played them with itunes in the past, though i am not sure how long it has been since i last played them - perhaps a few years.
somehow it appears that the standard quicktime player for mp3 files is perfectly happy with this files, yet there is something about them that itunes does not like.
the files have relatively low bitrates (they are digitized versions of old cassette tapes). at least some of them (perhaps all) show in itunes as being encoded with SoundJam 2.6.2, and having variable bit rate.
i am using the latest version of itunes on mac os 10.4.6.
    any suggestions?

so i think you understand that i was upset to find out that they had become unplayable/unconvertable in itunes.
Yes, I do understand. I have a few recordings of family members who died a few decades ago. They're still on tape and I want to digitize them before the magnetic particles "all point to the magnetic poles again".
I'm still in doubt in which format to store them however.
I digitized most of my old vinyl to AIFF and then converted them to Apple Lossless to save HD space.
The costs of large capacity disks have decreased over the years, so I'm thinking to leave the digitized recordings in AIFF format.
This format looks to last for at least a few decades (I hope).
I remember when old data on some type of punchcards (is this correct English?) had to be converted to go in the computer age.
The machines to read them already had been demolished, so they had to build a new one :/

  • Have my songs in my ipod, but can't play them from iTunes

recently imorted songs from CDs are in my ipod and, of course, listed in the library of iTunes, but when I try to play them usin iTunes, I am required "locate it because the original file cannot be found", although I can play those songs from my iPod without any problem. It wasn't like that before, so I guess I have changed something in iTunes setting or something like that.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Batta

You may have accidentally moved your iTunes Music Folder. Do a search on your computer and when you locate it, put it back in My Documents>My Music>iTunes. If you don't keep your music in the iTunes folder but some other then you need to locate that one and put it back to it's original position.

  • HT1349 I have multiple albums that I've purchased that iTunes will not allow me to play stating they cannot locate the source. I then tried going into available downloads in iTunes to see if I needed to download it again, and iTunes tells me it is already

I have multiple albums that I've purchased through iTunes, and iTunes will not allow me to play them stating they cannot locate content.I tried going into iTunes Store and look for available downloads, but the store shows it's already downloaded. It's a lot of music i've bought and can't play. How do I fix this?

Forget the pad for a moment and just think about I tunes on your computer.  Every now and then( 3 times over 6 years) when doing an I tunes upgrade, I tunes seems to lose track of some of my music files.  They show up in the I tunes listing, but when you try to play, it cannot find the source.   The cause is always that I have somehow moved some or all of the music to a library that is outside of the set of libraries I have dragged into I tunes.
On your computer, search for one of the songs.  All the missing ones are probably together, and when you find one, you will find the rest.  When you find it, note the directory  and file path to where it lives, then add that path to your I tunes
    Ibarra.
Note, the original listing will still be in I tunes, so you will get double listings for theses songs, and no easy way to tell which is the valid ane and which is not, other than the ! Symbol when it cannot find the file.  I know of no good way to get rid of the duplicate listing except manually going through and deleting them.
One you get them back into your I tunes library, they will sync and play fine.
Second side effect,  if you are streaming to atv, and it comes accross one of those entries that leads nowhere, it simply stops streaming, and you have to restart the play.

First, for the forum view issue. Go to My Settings (on the right) and in General Settings change the Topic Page View to Flat. Click Save. Posts should show up in the order they were written.
    Have you seen this?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93764
Also, since you said that you've gone through the 5 Rs, I would assume that you used the iPod Updater to restore (since there is no other way of doing it and you don't "run" the 5 Rs).
When you restored, did you use the latest updater?
You may also want to try formatting the iPod through Windows. Connect it to the computer and when it appears in My Computer right click it and go to format. Does anything happen? Can you format the iPod through Windows?
