Audiobooks not found in recent Downloads

Question

We just purchased two audiobooks from the iTunes store with our home computer.  Our iPhone and iPad are set for automatic downloads and this seems to work for music, music videos, ibooks, and apps.  We expected it to work for audiobooks too but it did not.  
We had gone on vacation and wanted to listen to the audiobook.  Not finding it on our iOS devices, we have tried to then download it from our recent purchases using the iTunes app but the audiobooks don't show up - there is no tab for them, only the tabs for 'music', 'apps', and 'iBooks'.  We looked through every tab and tried all sorts of ways to see our purchases.   The books do show up when we look at our purchase history in our store account, just not in any way that we can get the content onto our iPhone (or iPad).
How do you get these downloaded to the iPhone from the store?   Obviously its not reasonable to stop our vacation and return 3000 miles to acceess our computer with some hardwire link.   Any suggestions welcome.

Audiobooks are not among the things you can download more than once without paying again.  You'll have to wait until you are home and can get them from your computer.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.
