Audiobooks - skipping end of track

I've recently downloaded some audiobooks from AudioBooksforFree.com as mp3. Length 15 - 35 minutes per file. They play OK on iTunes but on the iPod they skip the last ten seconds. That means ten seconds before the end of the track it jumps to the start of the next track.
Older mp3 files I've had on for a while don't do this.
At the same time as this I've upgraded to the latest iTunes (7.1.1.5).
I've made sure that Crossfade Playback is turned off. And I have the problem whether or not I have the tracks specified as "skip when shuffling" and/or "part of a gapless album".
I've done a reset on the iPod (which didn't help) but don't dare do a full restore in case the problem effects all tracks when reloaded!
My iPod is a 2 year old 4th Generation 60GB Photo. Software version 1.2.1.
Any ideas?

I think Stories will do the job. You can check this Stories Tutorial (from www.kenstone.net).
But if you want to be 100% sure, the re-encoding is obviously the complete solution ! (... but I'm sure you knew that) ;D
Hope it helps !

  • IPod Playback Skips End Of Track When Ripping CD's In iTunes 8.1.1.10

I have just upgraded to iTunes 8.1.1.10 and any Tracks ripped using this version have a problem playing back on my iPod. Playback within iTunes is fine however, when playing back through my 5th Gen iPod Video up to the last 20 seconds of the track are skipped. Previsously ripped CD tracks are fine and do not show the problem.
I beleive the problem is Quicktime AGAIN. This is the third time APPLE have introduced the same bug whereby Quicktime (used for encoding the AAC files) does not write the file ending properly. Last time (around version 7.5 or 7.6) they tried to blame faulty hardware, which they then would NOT replace under warrenty etc.
APPLE are becoming worse than Microsoft for re-applying the same old bugs. Once fixed it should stay fixed.
Last time this happened the only fix (until APPLE re-fixed the problem) was to revert back to an older version of Quicktime. That is easier to do for Mac users, however Windows users, try finding downloads of previous versions on Apple's site(s).
Come on APPLE - fix the damm problem properly.

I have the same problem with my 5th Gen iPod Video. I thought I had issues with my iPod. I was worried. I will try the previous version of Qucktime. However I do have a work around. Highlight all of the songs in the CD in your iTunes Library and do a Get Info. Say yes to the multiple items qustion. In the "Options" tab at the bottom it says "Gapless album:". Make that say Yes in the box on the right of it. You can do this through iTunes directly on your iPod but, you wont have to if you do it in the Library before you drag it to your iPod.

  • Downloaded a song from itunes and it ends almost 2 minutes early and skips to next track

downloaded a song from itunes and it ends almost 2 minutes early and skips to next track. I deleted the song and redownloaded it from the purchased section on the itunes store three times and still have the same problem. What is the solution?

Clear your web browser's cache, use Edit > Preferences > Advanced and tap the Reset cache button, delete the contents (if any) of ...\iTunes Media\Download, then try again.  If the problem persists contact the iTunes Store support staff through the report a problem links in your account history.

  • Tracks skipping within the track in iTunes 11.1.5, Windows 7

I am currently having trouble with the tracks in my iTunes library skipping within the track as it streams, is there something I can do to resolve this?
Initially I thought it was just the songs that I bought through iTunes that were having issues but it seems to be any of the songs I listen to that is having this issue. Even if it is something I tried to reimport from CD. I have only been having this issue over the last two to three weeks.
I have Windows 7 HP and iTunes 11.1.5.
If this has been discussed before my apologies.

    Hi The Frazzled Shinigami,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend the troubleshooting steps in this article if all songs are skipping when you play them in iTunes:

  • Video from middle of track repeated at end of track after build.

    DSP3.0.2
    QT6.5.2
I been using DSP3 for years and haven't encountered this rather odd problem before.
I have a basic DVD with menu and 3 tracks. Each track is about 30 mins. I've placed a chapter marker at 5 min intervals throughout each track and one chapter marker 1 second before the end of each track.
From the menu you can jump to any track by selectiing it's button.
The end jump for each track is to jump to the next track in turn, with the 3rd jumping back to the menu. In simulation everything works fine.
After the build which completes successfully I find that track 1 and track 2 are fine, however at the end of track 3, 5 mins from between two of track 3s chapter markers, is repeated.
I deleted all the chapter markers in track 3 and re-created them as before to no avail, same result.
Has anyone any idea what's happening?
Why would 5 mins of video be repeated at the end of the track?
    Many Thanks.
Here the build log if it helps: (I use DVD2One to compress afterwards).

    Thanks Jason.
I may have explained it poorly, but the original m2v file didn't have any footage repeated at the end after encoding the MOV footage. What you describe is obviously possible, but it isn't what was happening here.
The repeated footage only appeared after the project build. It as though something in the build process decided to go back and repeat some footage at the end of that track. Weird.
Anyway I eventually re-encoded all the m2v from the project, (after deleting all the original), using the same settings as before, same bit rate etc, and tried again. This time the build didn't repeat any footage atthe end of the track.
So all is fine now, but as to what caused the problem, I have no idea.

  • Ipod automatically turns off when i skip a few tracks!

I noticed when I skip a few tracks when on shuffle mode, the ipod will just reject my orders and turn itself off. Is there any way to prevent this?
thanks in advance for even reading this!

Ok what you want to do is connect the ipod to the computer. Once it shows up in itunes go to the summary tab. When you ar in the summary tab click the restore button. After the restore is complete sync the ipod. If the problem continues contact technical support the ipod might need to be sent in for a repair.

Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app.  I am certain other applications also need this information.  Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information.  Feel free to post additional information, faulty information, or other related topics below as this is simply a collection of data and it would be practically impossible to test all of them. Thank you!
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.

  • Itunes in iphone skips to the end of tracks

It doesnt happen all the time, but sometimes when i select a track or podcast, it will just skip to the end of the song, then play the next thing. This seems to happen most when i search for songs in the iphone search page and also happens a lot with podcasts that i just select regularly. Its becoming very annoying because i have a lot of podcasts and if im not paying attention it will skip one but mark it as played. Anyone else having this problem or know what I can do about it?

I have updated my iPhone to 4.3 since then the music player stop skipping/shuffling from one music to the next. The transition icon used to be on the 4.2.1 and now on 4.3 it disappeared. So my iPod now plays the same music forever which is annoying. I have to reshuffle the music manually every time I want to listen to different music. Apple seems to resolve one issue and introduce another one. I have tried to restore my iPHone to 4.2.1 but after several attempts, no joy at all. I am stuck with unwanted update 4.3 and I am deprived from enjoying my music.
The update 4.3 has many faults including the effect on battery life. Another emerging issue is text and MMS interface. If I turn the MMS on and send simple text message, my currier charges me based on MMS tariff. If I disable the MMS, I can not receive or send MMS at all. This is another annoying issue with iPhone 4.3 update. Please Apple sort this mess out. Without Steve Jobs presence and running Apple, every one of us will stick with the useless iPhone 4.3 for sometime to come. No body is helping to sort the problem out at Apple at the moment. We need Steve Jobs back as soon as possible. I wish him well.

  • ITunes skipping from 2:20 to end of track for every file.

Whenever I play a track, iTunes plays uo until 2:20 into the peice, and then skips to the end of the track, immediately going into the next track.
    How can this be stopped?

OK. I have done a complete 'restore' (3 hours work) without it fixing the problem. The same 'newer' tracks still refuse to play beyond 1 to 2 minutes. All older 'older' tracks play ok. So, now I've done all of the 4 'R's'... Does a 'Restore' reformat the drive or does it just delete?
The odd thing is the way the faulty tracks stop. They don't just halt where they are. They don't jump to the next track. They jump to 1 second from the current track's end and stop there. The iPod still indicates it is playing. If you pause and try to navigate to another album or artist, the navigation is very slow. Once you select another item to play, the response returns to normal.
I have copied some of the failing tracks to another iPod (a mini) from my laptop PC and the tracks played OK on that unit.
I have also re-cut the same tracks using the same process on a different computer and downloaded them to my iPod and they play OK.
This is becoming more and more confusing.
The whole reason for using LAME as the encoder is that it is markedly better quality at the same rates than the iTunes version. Also re-encoding music is a bad thing to do if you want to maintain quality.
This latest iPod update and iTunes update is by far the worst Apple have ever released.
    Thanks

  • Songs end prematurely, skip to next track in iTunes 10.6.3

I wanted to see if other iTunes users are having this issue. I'm using iTunes 10.6.3 (the latest version), and both my wife and I are seeing the same behavior in our iTunes libraries with songs we've either purchased from the iTunes Store or that we've ripped from CDs. It doesn't seem to matter which.
The problem is a track will play and then stop abruptly before it's full length has played, and iTunes will then skip to the next track. This happened to me today with a new album I just purchased from the iTunes Store. 2 of the 13 tracks behaved this way. For example, if I'm playing a song that's 5:45 in length, iTunes will stop playing at 5:02 and jump to the next track.
It also just happened on an album I downloaded from the iTunes cloud. I'd purchased it a couple years ago from the iTunes Store. I played the album today and again, one track stopped short of its true length, and iTunes skipped to the next track.
So I guess the good news is it doesn't appear to a problem with corrupted tracks or anything. It points to a problem the iTunes application itself.
If anyone has experienced the same problem, please share what you know. Thanks in advance.

On the main iTunes screen, click on Purchased. That'll give you a list of your songs & albums stored on the cloud. The song(s) you've deleted should be available for download again (they'll have the cloud icon next to them). If not, sign out of iTunes and then sign back in again and go back through the same steps mentioned above. Hope this helps.

  • Jumping at end of track

When I import tunes from a CD and then play them back, quite a lot of them start skipping and jumping right at the end of the track, normally about 5 seconds from the end.
I have tried using the error correction and making sure nothing else is running whilst the import is in process, but the skipping is still occuring.
    Any ideas? It's really annoying.
    G4 733, Powerbook G4 1.67   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

This would not have anything to do with the encoder you're using. It would rather suggest a problem with your optical drive reading audio data near the edge of tracks. If this happens regularly with many CDs, then I would venture a guess that your drive is failing. For now, I would start with one of the problematic CDs and, just for testing purposes, try ripping the whole CD to a single file using the "Join CD Tracks" feature (from the Advanced menu in iTunes). If playback is fine, then we have a good starting point...

  • Songs cut short by skip to next track

I recently built a new system and upgraded from XP to Vista. However based on other posts I do not believe that either OS or hardware are a factor.
After migrating my music and library to the new system everything appeared to have worked perfectly. However I noticed that certain songs are being cut off short of their total play time. The time appears to be random from song to song but never changes for any particular song. If you move past the trigger point the song will play till the end. If you play the song in Quicktime it works fine.
I have checked the time in the Library.xml file, removed and replaced iTunes and installed earlier versions. Nothing works. This error does not appear to be common but does seem to affect a wide range of OS and hardware (yes even on Apple computers). Just search these forums for "skip next track".
None of the posts I have read provide any kind of solution. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I have a similar problem. I had accidently deleted my entire iTunes library when I reformatted my hard drive. I had a backup on an external hard drive. When I reimported the library to the reformatted hard drive I noticed the same problem that you have.
You might try what I tried. I opened the songs that skip in a sound editing program, one in which you can see the sound wave track. When I do this I can see that these songs now have gaps in them.....pretty much evenly spaced throughout the song. These gaps are about 3 seconds long, and are spaced around 30 seconds apart. One of my songs has gaps every 33 seconds. Others vary, some 23 seconds apart, other 31 seconds, others 35 seconds....but all of the gaps are about 3 seconds long.
When playing any of these "swiss cheese" songs that are filled with gaps, either in iTunes or on my iPod, as soon it gets to the first gap, it skips to the next song.

  • Audiobooks skip backwards multiple chapters often when pausing and resuming

As the title states I am having an issue where if I pause and resume sometimes the book will skip back multiple hours.
This issue is very inconsistent sometimes it happens sometimes not.  It is something I will experience on almost every book multiple times at some point.
I am having an issue that spans: OS 5-7 or more, iPhone 4, 4s, 5s, iPad 2 and other.  I believe Ive had the issue show itself on iTunes but I rarely use iTunes but fairly certain it has happened.
I make most of my audiobooks from CDs that I purchase but I have had the problem on others as well.  I also sometime download audiobooks that are in MP3 format and convert them.
I have used different programs with the same outcome but at the moment I am using chapter and verse to create my audiobooks.  I usually break them into 2 or 3 files because of how horrible the reliability is to begin with.
The M4B format seems to be plagued with issues and I am hoping I can put my finger on this one because it is by far the most annoying.
If it matters I typically use voice setting, high efficiency setting, VBR setting,  64kbits if stereo setting but set it to mono so it is 32kbits, and I have the sample rate set to auto.  It results in files around 160MB/10HRs and sound no worse than what audible publishes them as.
I doubt that matters though since I have experienced this issues with different settings.
I also am currently setting my chapters to every 10 minutes to make skipping easier because of how common this issue is.  If they are longer finding my spot is very difficult using the slider on an iPhone. I might even go smaller on the next book and make smaller files as well.
Any insight would be great.  I am most certainly NOT the only person with this issue since I have been able to recreate it hundreds of times with CD source, mp3 source, on my MacBook, on my PC, with several different programs, without using any special program at all (iTunes only)
Apple most def will not be resolving an issue that is several years old so I'd like to know how to format my books in a way to avoid this.

One thing you can look at is if in iTunes, you right click on the audiobook track, choose get info, and go to the options tab, remember playback position should be checked.

  • Complete Harry Potter Audiobook Skips ahead

I am experiencing a problem with The Complete Harry Potter on my 40 GB 3rd Generation iPod. I downloaded the Complete Harry Potter (6 books) from the iTunes music store and it plays without any problems on my iMac G4 with iTunes 6.0.x (the audiobook was downloaded after updating to iTunes 6).
When I attempt to play any of the books on my iPod, the "song" or track plays fine for approximately 30 minutes, but then skips ahead to the next track (i.e. an hour into Book One, Part One, it skips ahead to Part Two, completely ignoring the remaining 1 hour and 30 minutes of Part One). This has happened on almost every track in three of the six books (haven't tried the other three).
    Any thoughts/fixes/etc. would be appreciated.

Have you updated your iPod's firmware to the most recent version? You need to download the iPod software updater to do this.

  • Skipping or pausing tracks causes a burst of sound before skip or pause. Extremely distracting HELP!

When ever i skip a track in itunes i get a sudden burst of sound and then the track beggins to play. I get no problems with the audio quality when the track is playing but it is extremly annoying! The same happens when pausing. I have reinstalled but it still happens. This does not happen in any other audio player including winamp which i just downloaded and tested minuites ago. This only seemes to have started happening since i brought a dedicated soundcard as i listen to high bit rate lossless music through high end headphones. HELP!!
P.S sound enhancer is not turned on

    MikkoV,
The same exact thing is happening to me (but I have Snow Leopard). My music is on a USB external hard drive (1TB MyBook) and with almost every song I try to skip, it hangs for upwards of 5 seconds. This is especially annoying because I shuffle my music quite often and I tend to skip over many songs before I find one I want to listen to; and, it happens both when the music is paused and playing.
This hanging has never happened to this extent before upgrading to iTunes 9.0. If there is not a fix to this how can I go about downgrading to iTunes 8.0?
