AudioCDs appearing on my KDE desktop (JMicron users, you should read)

Hi.
After upgrading my motherboard from an 865PE based one to a 965P chipset I observed strange behaviour of HAL (probably). From time to time it appears the system gets some signal from one of my dvds and the popup about what I want to do appears. It sees the disk (that doesn't exist in any of the drives) as an AudioCD. After this, it puts an icon on my desktop which reads "AudioCD" and cannot be removed. Sometimes more icons like this appear.. none of them beeing removable. What should I do. I mention that the IDE controller that handles the DVD is a JMicron one, because ICH8 does not support IDE anymore. The only thing odd in my system is that JMicron shares the same IRQ with my video card. But that should not be a problem, I guess.
Thanks in advance for your help or suggestions.

Solved (important for every user that has a JMicron chip to handle PATA):
- recreated a boot image without ide modules and used it as a boot image
- added pata_jmicron libata sr-mod to the MODULES list in rc.conf
Now your IDE optical devices will be seen as SCSI ones (/dev/srx, where x is from 0 to n-1 drives)

  • XBMC/mplayer and KDE Desktop effects

    Hi,
i have setup a arch based HTPC with XBMC on top of KDE, but there is one thing i were not able to resolve: The XBMC GUI and playing a video on it gets laggy as soon as i DISABLE the kde desktop effects. My system is i3/sandy bridge based with integrated intel graphics, vaapi installed.
    1. tried different playback settings within XBMC, same results
    2. as soon as i disable the kde desktop effects, xbmc becomes slow and laggy, even if i dont restart it, if i enable desktop effects its smooth again
    3. mplayer reacts the same way when used with -vo gl or -vo gl2, so it could be somehow opengl related. With -vo xv it runs smooth in both configurations.
    4. Cpu load is constantly <20%
    5. tried as root user, same results
    6. glxinfo reports direct rendering is enabled
so any ideas how to resolve that problem? or how to find out whats going on?
you may ask why i want to disable desktop effects, well with desktop effects on, videos run almost perfect, but sometimes there are smaller lags that, i guess, can be related to the desktop effects eating resources, so i want to try without them.
here is the custom part of my xorg config, tearfree was needet to get a vsync-enabled video playback:
    #20-intel.conf
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
    Option "TearFree" "true"
    #Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
    #Option "AccelMethod" "xaa"
    EndSection

Security vulnerability CVE-2012-0946 in the NVIDIA UNIX driver was disclosed to NVIDIA on March 20th, 2012. The vulnerability makes it possible for an attacker who has read and write access to the GPU device nodes to reconfigure GPUs to gain access to arbitrary system memory. NVIDIA is not aware of any reports of this vulnerability, outside of the disclosure which was made privately to NVIDIA.

  • HDD icons not appearing on my Gnome desktop when mounted [SOLVED]

I have several ntfs partitons that I'd like to see as icons on my Gnome desktop.  When I ran Debian/Lenny, I would mount them like so:
    $ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda2 /mnt/D
After that command ran, a new icon (HDD) would appear on my Gnome desktop.  I didn't mess with fuseblock at all.  I'd like to get this behavior with Arch but don't understand what I need to do.
    Thanks!
EDIT: foutrelis solved this, see his post below.

It looks like if the mount point is under /media it will show up on the desktop. This is not the case with /mnt.
You're the man, foutrelis!  That did it!  I can't explain why it worked mounted to /mnt/D under Debian but /media/D works for me!  Thank you for the reply!
Now if you can tell me how I can edit the list of partitions that Gnome gives users, you'll be batting 1000.  Basically, I don't want every single partition to appear in the list.

  • Files don't appear visually on the desktop

I recently installed Leopard and I've been working with Logic 7.2.
Before upgrading to Leopard When I created new audio files with Logic they usually appeared immediately on the desktop if I assigned them there. With Leopard they do not. They can be seen in the Finder however. They just don't appear on the desktop. I've discovered that if I reboot then the icons show up on the desktop. I hate to have to reboot every time I want to see files that may be on my desktop, especially since I need to have visual confirmation of 20 or 30 files in one session. Is there another way or is this just a Leopard fluke?

This problem shows up with distressing frequency, and I'm not sure why. The preferences for the Desktop, such things as the view options for arrangement, whether to display a preview icon, and so on, are kept in this file:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist"
Other information is kept in .DS_Store file for the Desktop folder itself, thus when a new file is created in the Desktop folder the .DS_Store file is immediately updated with that information. Finder should be seeing this and updating the view of the Desktop that displays on the monitor, but sometimes it can be a sluggard about doing so.
You could try removing both the finder.plist file, and the Desktop's invisible .DS_Store file (you will need to turn on show invisibles to do so, or use the Terminal) and then relaunch the Finder or log out and back in and see if that fixes the problem. It should not be necessary to restart to see your Desktop files: simply opening the actual Desktop folder in your home folder should show the files, even though the Finder isn't updating the monitor display to reflect the state of the actual folder. Sometimes if you open the folder and select a file there the Finder will then update its display of the Desktop on the monitor. Also, when Finder is being unbearably slow about showing things generally you can force it to update by relaunching it: hold down the Option key and click and hold the click on the Finder icon in the Dock, then select Relaunch from the pop up menu. All folders will close and the Desktop will "blink" and then reappear--hopefully its reappearance will display all the latest files that are present in the Desktop folder.

  • Removing Akonadi (aka, leaving a clean KDE desktop)

I don't use KMail, KOrganizer, file/folder puntuation/comments nor anything that would require Akonadi, or any kind of storage system, so I'm just wasting X mb of my RAM in something that I'm just not using, and that I don't want running on my system.
Is there any way to remove Akonadi?
I tried -R akonadi, but it depends on kdepimlibs, and those depend on kdebase-workspace, so basically I can't remove a simple thing like Akonadi without removing my entire KDE desktop.

Something like this http://trojita.flaska.net/ perhaps? It was mentioned on planet KDE a while back.
Yes, thanks, I've already tried it, and though it seems very promising, it's far too unstable for a productive usage atm. It looks very much like Sylpheed, which I'm currently using, so I would really like to see this develop further to reach a stability minimum (don't get me wrong, I'm a [testing] user, so a few bugs here and there is not an issue, but this one is just a little bit over the edge).

  • X11 and Remote KDE desktop

I have started using my Mac for Unix systems administration using X11 and XDMCP (??) to a local linux box running KDE. I start X with -query a.b.c.d and running fullscreen I get a nice fullscreen desktop login. Everything was working fine until I realised that I was still running the Panther version of X11 on my Tiger system. I have upgraded from the install CD and now have a minor but impossible problem.
Everything works as before and I can login to the box. I open a Konsole session on the KDE desktop and suddenly discover that the "e" key on my keyboard has become a backspace key!!! Every other key seems to work fine!!
I cannot figure out what is causing this and how to fix it any and all advice/suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

Remote Control is a built-in feature for SCCM 2012 and uses the RPC protocol. When you use this, the user can still be logged on while helping.
Remote Desktop is a buit-in feature for Windows and uses the RDP protcol. When you use it, the user will be logged off.
Why you would use one over the other depends on your requirements.

    Dear Sir,
Presently we have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP 1. And now i would like to install Remote Desktop Services User CAL on this server. I have 25 digit product key of Windows Server
2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services User CAL (20). Downloaded this product key from our MSDN Subscriptions.
Kindly suggest me how to install (CAL server with product key that i have) and configure remote desktop services on my above existing server also how to point other server with my CAL server.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    1. Install Remote Desktop Session Host and Remote Desktop Licensing Role Services using Server Manager.
    2. Open RD Licensing Manager (licmgr.exe), Activate your server, then install your license
    3. In RD Session Host Configuration (tsconfig.msc), set the Licensing mode to Per User and Specify your RD Licensing server name (itself).  If you want you may configure these two settings via group policy setting instead.  The path of the
group policy settings is Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Licensing
    4. You may point other RDSH servers to your RD Licensing server using RD Session Host Configuration or via group policy as mentioned above.
    5. Optionally you may consider installing other Remote Desktop Role Services such as RD Gateway, RD Web Access, RD Connection Broker, etc.

  • [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects no longer working

    Hello,
I just did an update, (I didn't think it was a major one, I don't recall seeing graphics update, though I'm not sure how to confirm - is there a way to see recently updated packages in yaourt?) and after a brief issue with powertop that was solved by a restart (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179789 - it may be unrelated though) I found that when I restarted, KWin Crashed, and since then, my desktop effects are not working.
I have gone to the KDE Desktop Effects Settings Menu, and under the advanced menu, set the compositing type back to OpenGL 3.1, clicked apply, and confirmed that I wanted to try it even though it had evidently crashed Kwin. I then received a message stating "21 desktop effects could not be loaded". When I clicked details, a popup window said:
"For technical reasons it is not possible to determine all possible error causes.
Desktop effect system is not running."
For the record, I am on a Thinkpad X201 with intel graphics.
    Any ideas?

    Some Extra information:
I just tried a restart, that didn't work.
I then went back into effect settings, and saw that "enable effects at startup" was not checked. I also saw that under the advanced settings, Qt Graphics system was set to raster. Since I'm not sure which it was supposed to be on originally, but the current configuration wasn't working, I also set that to Native, and then clicked apply. KWin then crashed, here is the output:
    Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Aborted
    Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
To enable execution of this file add
    add-auto-load-safe-path /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.19-gdb.py
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
To completely disable this security protection add
    set auto-load safe-path /
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
For more information about this security protection see the
"Auto-loading safe path" section in the GDB manual. E.g., run from the shell:

  • IPod won't appear in iTunes or Desktop until I reset every time

Hi All. Sorry if this has been covered. I read the article on this (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950), but it didn't help.
    My problem:
I have the 30gb 5th-gen iPod and an Intel 1.83 Mac mini (10.4.8). Recently, every time I plug in the iPod, the computer refuses to mount it. The iPod screen displays the "Do not disconnect" message, but the computer and iTunes don't see it. If I perform a soft reset (middle button + Menu) the computer will then recognize the iPod, but I have to do this every time!
I looked at and tried the suggestions in the Apple support document listed above, but none of them resolve the issue. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I have a similar problem well its more serious though -- I accidentally unplugged my 80 GB video iPod prematurely from my Intel based Mac Mini without ejecting it in iTunes and now the iPod is stuck on the Do Not Disconnect screen even after it was unplugged -- plugging it back in does not help any.
I have tried restarting my Mac Mini with it plugged in does not help at all -- tried pressing the hold switch back and forth on my iPod a 5th generation video version nothing -- iPod does not appear on my Mac Desktop, any Finder windows nor does it appear in Disk Utility or iTunes.

AIM IM The message “Hello” could not be delivered.  The other person appears to be offline. The user is not accepting offline messages. How do I change this setting?

    HI,
The simple shortest answer is that you can't (Change a Buddy's settings)
From your own end you can reply to the first Off Line IM you get on an AIM login (an accompanying IM for AIMSysMessage asks if you want them to Continue - replying No stops them)
IF you have stopped Off Line IMS than you can reset this at AIM Settings
You can log in here with AIM and Apple IDs that end in @mac.com and @me.com  (iCloud issued @me.com name are an Exception)
In addition the Setting in iChat > Preferences > General Section that refers to setting the Status to Off Line on Quit stops the App starting up if iChat is not launched but the computer is ON

  • Boot Camp Hard Disk Visible on desktop to users

I am the system admin and have 2 different user account logins. The Hard disk is visible to both users on the desktop and they can open and access the contents. How can I make the drive invisible to the users so they can't mess with it or at least locked. This is a high school lab we're talking about...

If the XP "drive" is FA32, you can change it in Leopard.
Right-click it and select "Get Info"
In the box with the drive name, simply insert a "." in front of the name.
You can also change the name using the terminal
If the XP drive is named XP, for example, in a terminal enter
    cd /Volumes
    if you then enter
    ls
you will see the XP drive. Enter
    mv XP .XP
again, replace XP with whatever yours is named.
There is a better way, however, which does not require making the drive invisible:
You can change the permissions on the drive via the terminal, if you are familiar or comfortable with the terminal commands. You can set it so only you can read it.
    My permissions are
    drwxr-xr-x 1 nerowolfe nerowolfe 12288 Jun 3 12:07 VistaUlt
I believe that if you change it to
    drwx------ 1 nerowolfe nerowolfe 12288 Jun 3 12:07 VistaUlt
that will also take care of it.
The default permissions give all users "r" privileges

  • KDE Desktop disappeared after update [SOLVED]

    Hiya folks,
I have just updated my system with pacman -Syu. There were several kde updates, among others, and now, upon reboot, the desktop is completely blank: no taskbar, clock, wallpaper, icons, etc... All I see after logging in to the desktop environment is a black screen and a mouse cursor. I can still fire up programs using Alt+F2, internet works and everything else seems fine, but no desktop or launcher. I have tried downgrading packages (kdebase-plasma and kdebase-workspace), but to no avail, and figured I would ask for help before any more blind downgrades. If it changes anything, virtualbox-ose was also updated.
As an aside, I have been using Arch since last January and this the first time I have encountered a problem I could not solve by browsing the wiki or forums. This is an awesome distribution and community.
    Thanks in advance,
    François

Rename the ~/.kde4/ directory (maybe .kde4.old or .kde4.backup) and try logging back in. That should create new configuration files and you'll (hopefully) have a usable desktop. Then you can copy over any application configs (Kmail, Amarok, etc)

  • KDE desktop does not come up after log out

I have updated KDE to the lastest version using the Arch packages.  It worked wonderfully the first time, all of my widgits were intact and my desktop was just as I had left it, custom background and everything. Then, however, I logged out to make sure Fluxbox worked.  Now, even after rebooting, the KDE desktop doesn't come up.  It will bring up Pidgin which was running before but the taskbar and all of the widgets are gone and it has this grey background that is the same as the one in the KDM.
No errors are produced, although it does now ask for the password for a Wallet that "Plasma Desktop" wants to access.  I recognise the name of the wallet (kdewallet) and input the password correctly after this, two notifications pop up with informational thing.  One is about some indexing service being "rebuilt" for new features and the other is saying that it's falling back on a different sound output.  None of this seems to have an impact on the limited usability I have.
Has anyone else expereinced this?  Are there any log files where errors would be outputted to?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I have found the relevent messages.  They are at a pastebin. http://pastebin.ca/1522805
I'm not entirely sure what is going on here.
After the top line of that post, there are a LOT of errors related to "No block with decorrelation terms" in fact the vast majority of that file are those things.  All other "errors" are warnings related to my Fluxbox session which is working fine.
Lines 1, 11 and 12 seem to be the most severe errors:
[0xa2412b0] main input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
"/usr/bin/dolphin(4560)" Error in thread 3049428752 : "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
    "/usr/bin/dolphin(4560)" Error in thread 3049428752 : "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"
I have no idea where to even begin fixing them. However it is Nepomuk that comes up with the rebuilding message i mentioned in my previous post.
