Audiostreaming over Airport Express via Ethernet

So far, streaming audio over Airport Express in my large house has been a bit unstable - the audio stream often gets interrupted.
Now I have been thinking of using a wired Ethernet network instead of wireless transmission.
My question: The Airport Express has an Ethernet port. Is it possible to access the Airport Express wired to an Ethernet network and use it to listen to streamed audio?
Question two: And still use its wireless functionality to access the Internet?
What about the Airport Extreme in this regard?

Connecting to Airport Express via Ethernet Cable

Dear Apple Support Community,
My setup at home is such that all my devices are in such close proximity to the Airport Express, and therefore I connect everything to the Airport Express via ethernet cables (NAS, Apple TV, PS 3).
The final step in my network setup would be to connect my Macbook to the Airport Express to connect to the internet using the Ethernet Cables, instead of using the wireless connection - because my Macbook is positioned right next to the Airport Express.
However, I am struggling to get the Macbook to connect to the Internet via the Ethernet Cable through the airport express. Is there a special way to set this up if this can be done. I know Wireless would be the answer, but the problem is, when I download movies etc, I write the files directly onto the NAS which happens a lot quicker than doing so via WiFi.
I hope the above question makes sense.

I have an old PowerBook G3 and I do not have a wireless card for it. My plan was to connect it, via Ethernet cable to my airport express which is on my home wireless network (DSL to Mac Mini to AirPort Express via built-in AirPort).
Unfortunately, the network configuration your describing, where you would use OS X's Internet Sharing feature to share the Mac Mini's wired Internet connection wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), won't work.
If I cannot connect my laptop this way, could anyone suggest a wireless card that is compatible with this slightly antiquated, yet very useful machine?
Only the "Pismo" PowerBook G3 is capable of using the original AirPort card. If you have this model, then the following DIY instructions will show you how to install it.

Yes, it will.
You also have the option of (a) completely turning off the radio on the Airport Express or (b) leaving it on, and using it to create a b/g point of access to your LAN thus allowing you to run the AEBSn in n-only mode for your n-capable wireless clients.

Yes, this is exactly correct.
To configure each AirPort Express (AX)
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to name your device, assign a device password and adjust time zone settings. Give each Express a separate name so you can identify then easily.
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode...Create a Wireless Network
Wireless Network Name...Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) if you want to use 2.4 GHz
Channel...Automatic
Wireless Security...Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password....Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
Click the Internet icon
Change the Connection Sharing setting at the bottom to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the AirPort Express will restart in 20-30 seconds
I think it is easier to configure each AirPort Express with AirPort Utility by temporarily connecting it to your computer with a short ethernet cable. Once you have saved the configuration, you can move the Express to the location that you need.
Please post back on your progress.

Connecting Two Airport Express Via Ethernet

I have a unique situation in which I would like to connect two airport express via ethernet. Here is the situation: I can connect the first AX directly to the internet and set up a WDS for the second AX. Unfortunately, the second AX signal does not reach where I need it to go. I can run an ethernet cable between the two. Is this setting valid for a WDS? Or does the WDS have to be wireless? If I can set up the WDS using an ethernet, will the relay AX broadcast the internet wirelessly then?
Are there any specific settings I should know about?
Any help would be great.

I currently have an old snow basestation at this location. Can I plug an ethernet cable into it and connect it to the AX?
Yes that will work.
My understanding was that the older basestation could not do this?
I think you have it confused with extending a network wirelessly. That is not possible with the snow AirPort base station (ABS).

Yes, though it is less ideal than what I suggested earlier. You would need to place your AirPort Express in a location approximately midway between your AirPort Extreme Base Station and the TV. Then, using AirPort Utility, configure it to "extend a wireless network".
It may help. Bear in mind the signal thus "extended" by the Express can only be as good as the signal it can receive from the Extreme. That is the reason for selecting its appoximate midway location.

This solution requires an all-Apple wireless network. No third party stuff.
You mentioned using Ethernet. That would be a better idea. Scroll down to "Roaming Network (Ethernet-connected Wi-Fi base stations)" for a picture. In your case, the longer the Ethernet cable - hence the closer you can move the Express to the TV - the better

Can I connect Tower w/o wireless card into my Airport Express via ethernet for internet?

Greetings. I have an airport extreme sending wireless internet signal all over the house. I have a music studio computer Intel Xeon that has no wireless card in a seperate room. Am I able to configure an older Airport Express 802.11g that is connected wirelessly to the Extreme signal to connect to internet signal to my tower via the ethernet connection on the Airport Express?... i.e., connect the ethernet cable from my tower to the ethernet port on the Express to access internet signal? If so do I have to set up the Express for a certain kind of configuration that is different than, say, if I were using the airport express for airplay or a printer?

Unfortunately, the older AirPort Express model that you have does not have this type of capabiility.....an "n" version of the AirPort Express would be able to do what you want.
Look for a Model A1264 or Model A1392. The A1392 is the newer version, but the A1264 would do fine.
Here I assume that you have an 802.11"n" version of the AirPort Extreme.

I am having what seems like an unusually difficult time accomplishing the following:
I have an Airport Express that I wish to connect to my router using an ethernet connection. My purpose for using the AE is solely to use Airplay (using iphones, ipads) to play powered speakers.
I seem to have no problem configuring the AE to act over WIFI to achieve this task - but instead I want to have the AE connection via ethernet, and not over WIFI, because I have experienced cut-outs in playing music when the AE is connected to my existing network over WIFI and I'm hoping that the ethernet connection would eliminate this.
Can someone please post the proper settings using Airport Utility? I have Utility version 6.1.

If you also want the Express to serve as an additional access point (optional) set its Wireless Mode to "Create a wireless network" and provide the exact same Wireless Network Name and security settings as your existing router's wireless network.

Airport Express - switch - Airport Express via ethernet?

I have an Airport Express—which I'll call AE1—as my main router. It runs a wireless network, but it also is connected to a switch via ethernet. I have several devices connected to the switch, and everything works great.
However, I have a second Airport Express—call it AE2—and I would like to connect it to the switch via ethernet and use it as a bridge. The bridge function works, but only via wireless, that is, AE2 is bridging just fine, but it's connected via wireless, and then extending. I cannot get the AE to connect via ethernet.
It does work if I connect AE2 to AE1 via ethernet (directly to the port on the back of AE1), so I know it works. But, when I introduce a switch between the two, no go...
Thoughts?

I've tested the port in AE1 and all ports on the switch. Everything works great. Good solid connection. I've tested the cable with a line tester and the cable is good at 100 BaseT. Everything I connect to this line works fine except the AE2, which refuses to extended over Ethernet. I think next I may try running the line directly from the DSL modem through that line and into AE2 and see if it will accept a connection that way. I'll report my findings.
It's not the end of the world; AE2 works fine extending my wireless network through a wireless connection. I just want to improve my overall bandwidth by removing this drain. And, I'm trying to resolve this mostly on principle.

Hi!
My MacBook Pros Wifi-antenna has stopped working and tells me there is no hardware installed.
As a quick fix I thought I could buy an Airport Express and an ethernet cable, thus connecting the Pro to the AE via ethernet, and then connecting the AE to my cable modem wireless router.
But it just seems impossible. Seems the other way works just fine, but that won't help me.
I'm having no problems connecting to the router via
mac -->ethernet-->AE-->ethernet-->router,
but as soon as I pull out the ethernet cable between AE and router, the connection drops.
I tried restarting the computer, the router, the AE, but still no go.
I have tried both connecting to existing network, and expanding the wireless network.
Also the router bridge mode is greyed out in Airport Utility/Network.
Anyone with any revelatory insights?

I have had great success installing these for BT Home Hubs and VM Superhubs.
@JoeMY - If it is "joined" to the FritzBox then it won't work, it only works with Apple routers connected via Ethernet or as the main router.

Airport Express via Ethernet to Extend Network

I am trying to have my Airport Express extend the network created by my Time Capsule by plugging ethernet into the AE so I can have the full signal (instead of wirelessly extending the network and degrading the signal). When I plug the AE into the wall with the ethernet already plugged into it, it goes green but then I lose visibility via Airport Utility to both the AE and the TC.
Does anyone have an idea of what I am doing wrong?

First verify that you have a good ethernet connection to the Time Capsule by turning off the wireless on a computer and connecting it to the ethernet wall jack. Make sure that you can get a good Internet connection on the computer.
Then, please check your settings on the AirPort Express using AirPort Utility-Manual Setup. They should look like this:
Click the Base Station tab below the Advanced (gear) icon
Name your device, establish a device password and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab below the Advanced (gear) icon
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your Time Capsule network
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) a good choice. Otherwise, your choice
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as the Time Capsule network
Wireless Password = Same password as the Time Capsule network
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and restart.
Then power down the entire network. Start the modem first, then Time Capsule, then AirPort Express, then your devices.

AirPort Express via ethernet cable/Wireless.

I have an iMac upstairs, and want to stream music to my HI-Fi downstairs. My new AirPort Express has a green light and is found via Airport Utility on the iMac when connected to my modem (BT HomeHub, downstairs)) via ethernet cable. But once unplugged from the modem so I can use it near the Hi-Fi it is not found via wireless, and has a flashing amber light. I only want to stream music from iMac to Hi-Fi. I set it up to join the existing network - the guy in the Apple store assured me I didn't need to be connected by ethernet to the modem, that it would work via WiFi. What am I doing wrong?

Please locate the Express temporarily in the same room or an adjacent room as the Home Hub.
Perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express to get everything back to a known state as follows:
Pull the Express from power
Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Express
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and make sure that you are connected to Apple Network xxxxxx. No password is required.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6
Click on the AirPort Express and then click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a device name to the Express, device password, and adjust Time Zone Settings. The settings should look like this:
Next, click the Wireless tab located next to the Base Station tab. Adjust settings as follows:
Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network (You might have to hold down the option key on the Mac while you click on the selection box to see the "Join" setting appear)
Wireless Network Name = Name of the Home Hub Network
Enter a check mark next to Allow Ethernet Clients if you want to enable the Ethernet port
Wireless Security = WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = Home Hub wireless network password
Verify Password
Click the Update button at the lower right
Close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the configuration has been stored on the Express
Wait 45-60 seconds for a green light
Move the Express to the desired location and power it back up, connect speakers, etc.

Airport Express via ethernet... impossible?

I have:
Power G5 without airport and osx 10.5.1.
I have adsl modem router (192.168.178.1) and I connect internet well with PowerG5 (192.168.178.21) and a ibook (192.168.178.20) all with a ethernet home lan: it works fine!
I have also a airport express connected to ethernet lan and pluged into my audio system (A).
I gave to airport express static IP (192.168.178.25) ... and disabled wifi (I do not need)... and, remember, ibook works fine with it.
The ibook can easly and fine connect via ethernet to airport express and listen itunes with my audio system (A).
BUT...
With my PowerG5 it is impossible!!!
I try to "ping" airport express from PowerG5 and network utility sees it.
But utility airport and itune do not sees it.
WHY???!!!
In my PowerG5 network prefs are same as ibook (just, obviously, different IP) but, so I think is Leopard, ibook sees airport express but PowerG5 not!!!!!

also... if I directly connect G5 to airportE via ethernet it sees it but if I try to connect to airport using ethernet home LAN it does not work anymore... I have a router (as I wrote up) maybe some conflict with that? ...mmh, I don't think because also the ibook it's in the same ethernet home LAN and it connect with airport.
