Audit Vault Best Practices WP
Just recently posted is a new white paper called Audit Vault Best Practices. You can find it here:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/audit-vault/pdf/twp_auditvault_bestpractices_200706.pdf
I hope you find it useful.
Thanks Tammy
Hi Elmin,
I was doing implementation on Audit Vault with around twenty source databases. These were hardware requirements:
Server:
HP-UX 11.31, 2 CPUs, 16 GB RAM, 1TB of storage for database
Agent (these are from the installation guide):
- At least 512 MB of available physical memory (RAM)
- Swap space of 1024 MB or twice the size of RAM
- 400 MB of disk space in the /tmp directory
- 1.6 GB of disk space for the Oracle Audit Vault collection agent software (but if you apply patches you need actually more than this).

Best practice for audit management
Hi,
Is there any best practice for audit management in SAP ?Hi,
You can check these links and white papers which explains the business scenarios and best practices

Best practices when carry forward for audit adjustments
Dear experts,
I would like to know if someone can share his best practices when performing carry forward for audit adjustments.
We are actually doing legal consolidation for one customer and we are facing one issue.
The accounting team needs to pass audit adjustments around April-May for last year.
So from January to April / May, the opening balance must be based on December closing of prior year.
Then from May / June to December, the opening balance must be based on Audit closing of prior year.
We originally planned to create two members for December period, XXXX.DEC and XXXX.AUD
Once the accountants would know their audit closing balance, they would have to input it on the XXXX.AUD period and a business rule could compute the difference between the closing of AUD and DEC periods and store the result on an opening flow.
The opening flow hierarchy would be as follow:
F_OPETOT (Opening balance Total)
F_OPE (Opening balance from December)
F_OPEAUD (Opening balance from the difference between closing balance of Audit and December periods)
Now, assume that we are in October, but for any reason, the accountant run a carry forward for February, he is going to impact the opening balance because at this time (October), we have the audit adjustments.
How to avoid such a thing? What are the best practices in this case?
I guess it is something that you may have encounter if you did a consolidation project.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Antoine EpinetteCookman and I have been arguing about this since the paleozoic era. Here's my logic for capturing everything.
Less wear and tear on the tape and the deck.
You've got everything on the system. Can't tell you how many times a client has said "I know that there was a better take." The only way to disabuse them of this notion is to look at every take. if it's not on the system, you've got to spend more time finding the tape, and adding "wear and tear on the tape and the deck." And then there's the moment where you need to replace the audio for one word from another take. You can quickly check all the other takes (particularly if you've done a thorough job logging the material - see below)_.
Once it's on the system, you still need to log and learn the material. You can scan thru material much faster once it's captured. Jumping around the material is much easier.
There's no question that logging the material before you capture makes you learn the material in a more thorough way, but with enough selfdiscipline, you can learn the material as thoroughly once it's been captured. -
What are the best practices for audit report for SharePoint 2013 farm ?
Hello,
I am looking for the best practices for audit reporting in SharePoint 2013 farm. Can anyone please provide me checklist/tools/guidelines on same ?
your help will be much appreciated.
Thanks and Regards,
Dipti ChhatrapatiThis is quite open ended question. A sharepoint farm should be well maintained as per :
1. Microsoft's recommendations on : Topology, Hardware and Software requirements, Operational procedures and most important Capacity guidelines:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff758645(v=office.15).aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787(v=office.15).aspx
2. Organisation's IT policies and procedures : Farm Configuration, Workload and monitoring
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff758658(v=office.15).aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee748651(v=office.15).aspx
3. Industry best practices
I would suggest to start thinking over these lines and create a plan for your Sharepoint farm.
You can then create powershell scripts to run these reports at certain frequency to find the changes, any deviation from the standard and health of the entire farm.
Hope this helps!!

Setting Disks/Caches/Vault for multiple projects - Best Practices
Please confirm a couple assumptions for me:
1. Because Scratch Disk, Cache and Autosave preferences are all contained in System Settings, I cannot choose different settings for different projects at the same time (i.e. I have to change the settings upon launch of a new project, if I desire a change).
2. It is good practice to set the Video/Render Disks to an external drive, and keep the Cache and Autosave Vault set to the primary drive (e.g. user:Documents:FCP Documents). It is also best practice to save the Project File to your primary drive.
And a question: I see that the Autosave Vault distinguishes between projects, and the Waveform Cache Files distinguishes between clips. But what happens in the Thumbnail Cache Files folder when you have more than one project targeting that folder? Does it lump it into the same file? Overwrite it? Is that something about which I should be concerned?
Thanks!maxwell wrote:

I don't. And I don't think it matters. But you should back that file up to some other drive (like Time Machine).

I wouldn't worry about it.

Audit Vault Agent sizing (harware requirements)
Hi, I need to provide my customer an estimation of the disk space needed for the Audit Vault Agent, size of archivelog files of the source database so that REDO collector could work without problems, and other demands of source side (audit vault agent) versus audit vault server?
Is there any document like "audit vault configuration best practice" related with hardware requirements (size of disk space, size of archivelog files, aud records...)???
Thank you all in advance..

Installation audit vault agent with RAC configuration
Hi at all,
I have a question about the installation of the agent on the RAC configuration. Where must I install the Audit vault agent, on all RAC nodes or is there a properly configuration?
Thanks
VincenzoBy default when you install the agent on any single node the installation recognizes that it is a cluster and presents you with a list of available nodes from which to select.
With a RAC cluster you have one database and multiple instances. All instances will write to one, and only one AUD$ and FGA_LOG$ table so if you are using database auditing one node will suffice. Which node that is though depends on knowing which node is up at any one time so you could potentially choose a node that is dropped from the cluster or is down for patching and maintenance while the cluster is still running. With respect to REDO collection each node has its own redo thread so you definitely need to be collecting from every node.
Audit Vault has not been out long enough that I can tell you from experience what might be defined as "best practice" and often what we really need to study is "worst practice" to know what not to do. But in the case of RAC my instinct would be to first determine the collection type(s) and then decide. Erring on the side of collecting from all nodes makes a lot of sense. -
Error while trying to start Audit Collector on the Audit Vault Server 10g
Hi,
We are trying to build a demo environment for testing Oracle Audit Vault 10g but we are having some trouble.
Our environment is like this: Oracle Audit Vault Server is installed on Windows Server 2003 SP2, while the Audit Vault Agent is installed on an Oracle 10g Release 2 database which resided on Windows server 2003 SP1. This two Windows Server machines are both installed as virtual machines.
We have successfully created the Agent and the Collector on Audit Vault Server and the Agent starts successfully while when we try to start the collector we get an error which says " Http Communication error: Http Communication error: 500" and the collector does not start.
We are new to the Audit Vault Software so we would really appreciate some help on how to resolve this issue because we have got stuck here and can not go on with our work.
Thanks in advance for your time
Best regards
EngridHi,
Thanks again for all of your replies but now we are getting another error with the OSAUD collector. We are able to add the collector successfully by using the avorcldb all_collector command.
Source database is 10g R2 (10.2.1) and we configured it for collecting the audit records in the OS audit trail by using the following statement: ALTER SYSTEM SET AUDIT_TRAIL=OS SCOPE=SPFILE;, and the SHOW PARAMETER AUDIT command returns the following values :
NAME TYPE VALUE
audit_file_dest string C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ADMIN
\<db_name>\ADUMP
audit_sys_operations boolean TRUE
audit_trail string OS
We don't know if the values set for the audit_file_dest is correct but after we start working on the database and execute some statements Oracle is not creating any files on this destinations while for the same statements when the Audit_trail=DB, EXTENDED the audit values for these statements are written in the appropriate table.
So we do not know if this is the cause but when we try to start the OSAUD collector defined on the Audit Vault Server it can not start and gives us the follwing error: "could not start collector OSAUD_Collector for source <source name>, directory access error for C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ADMIN\<db_name>\ADUMP".
Sorry for the message being so long but we really need some help with this issue.
thanks in advance.

SAP PI conceptual best practice for synchronous scenarios
Hi,
<br /><br />Apologies for the length of this post but I'm sure this is an area most of you have thought about in your journey with SAP PI.
<br /><br />We have recently upgraded our SAP PI system from 7.0 to 7.1 and I'd like to document best practice guidelines for our internal development team to follow.
I'd be grateful for any feedback related to my thoughts below which may help to consolidate my knowledge to date.
<br /><br />Prior to the upgrade we have implemented a number of synchronous and asynchronous scenarios using SAP PI as the hub at runtime using the Integration Directory configuration.
No interfaces to date are exposes directly from our backend systems using transaction SOAMANAGER.
<br /><br />Our asynchronous scenarios operate through the SAP PI hub at runtime which builds in resilience and harnesses the benefits of the queue-based approach.
<br /><br />My queries relate to the implementation of synchronous scenarios where there is no mapping or routing requirement. Perhaps it's best that I outline my experience/thoughts on the 3 options and summarise my queries/concerns that people may be able to advise upon afterwards.
<br /><br />1) Use SAP PI Integration Directory. I appreciate going through SAP PI at runtime is not necessary and adds latency to the process but the monitoring capability in transaction SXMB_MONI provide full access for audit purposes and we have implemented alerting running hourly so all process errors are raised and we handle accordingly. In our SAP PI Production system we have a full record of sync messages recorded while these don't show in the backend system as we don't have propogation turned on. When we first looked at this, the reduction in speed seemed to be outweighed by the quality of the monitoring/alerting given none of the processes are particularly intensive and don't require instant responses. We have some inbound interfaces called by two sender systems so we have the overhead of maintaing the Integration Repository/Directory design/configuration twice for these systems but the nice thing is SXMB_MONI shows which system sent the message. Extra work but seemingly for improved visibility of the process. I'm not suggesting this is the correct long term approach but states where we are currently.
<br /><br />2) Use the Advanced Adapter Engine. I've heard mixed reviews about this functionaslity, there areh obvious improvements in speed by avoiding the ABAP stack on the SAP PI server at runtime, but some people have complained about the lack of SXMB_MONI support. I don't know if this is still the case as we're at SAP PI 7.1 EHP1 but I plan to test and evaluate once Basis have set up the pre-requisite RFC etc.
<br /><br />3) Use the backend system's SOAP runtime and SOAMANAGER. Using this option I can still model inbound interfaces in SAP PI but expose these using transaction SOAMANAGER in the backend ABAP system. [I would have tested out the direct P2P connection option but our backend systems are still at Netweaver 7.0 and this option is not supported until 7.1 so that's out for now.] The clear benefits of exposing the service directly from the backend system is obviously performance which in some of our planned processes would be desirable. My understanding is that the logging/tracing options in SOAMANAGER have to be switched on while you investigate so there is no automatic recording of interface detail for retrospective review.
<br /><br />Queries:
<br /><br />I have the feeling that there is no clear cut answer to which of the options you select from above but the decision should be based upon the requirements.
<br /><br />I'm curious to understand SAPs intention with these options -
<br /><br />- For synchronous scenarios is it assumed that the client should always handle errors therefore the lack of monitoring should be less of a concern and option 3 desirable when no mapping/routing is required?
<br /><br />- Not only does option 3 offer the best performance, but the generated WSDL is ready once built for any further system to implement thereby offering the maximum benefit of SOA, therefore should we always use option 3 whenever possible?
<br /><br />- Is it intended that the AAE runtime should be used when available but only for asynchronous scenarios or those requiring SAP PI functionality like mapping/routing otherwise customers should use option 3? I accept there are some areas of functionality not yet supported with the AAE so that would be another factor.
<br /><br />Thanks for any advice, it is much appreciated.
<br /><br />Alan

Edited by: Alan Cecchini on Aug 20, 2010 12:11 PMHi Aaron,
I was hoping for a better more concrete answer to my questions.
I've had discussion with a number of experienced SAP developers and read many articles.
There is no definitive paper that sets out the best approach here but I have gleaned the following key points:
- Make interfaces asynchronous whenever possible to reduce system dependencies and improve the user experience (e.g. by eliminating wait times when they are not essential, such as by sending them an email with confirmation details rather than waiting for the server to respond)
- It is the responsibility of the client to handle errors in synchronous scenarios hence monitoring lost through P-P services compared to the details information in transaction SXMB_MONI for PI services is not such a big issue. You can always turn on monitoring in SOAMANAGER to trace errors if need be.
- Choice of integration technique varies considerably by release level (for PI and Netweaver) so system landscape will be a significant factor. For example, we have some systems on Netweaver 7.0 and other on 7.1. As you need 7.1 for direction connection PI services we'd rather wait until all systems are at the higher level than have mixed usage in our landscape - it is already complex enough.
- We've not tried the AAE option in a Production scenarios yet but this is only really important for high volume interfaces, something that is not a concern at the moment. Obviously cumulative performance may be an issue in time so we plan to start looking at AAE soon.
Hope these comments may be useful.

Best practice for select access to users
Not sure if this is the correct forum to post, if not then let me know where should I post.
From my understanding this is the best forum to ask this questions.
Are you aware of any "Best Practice Document" to grant select accesses to users on databases. These users are developers which select data out of database for the investigation and application bug fix.
From time to time user want more and more access to different tables so that they can do investigation properly.
Let me know if there exists a best practice document around this space.
Asked in this forum as this is related to PL/SQL access.Welcome to the forum!
Whenever you post provide your 4 digit Oracle version.

There are many best practices documents about various aspects of security for Oracle DBs but none are specific to developers doing invenstigation.
Here is the main page for Oracles' OPAC white papers about security.
http://www.oracletechnetwork-ap.com/topics/201207-Security/resources_whitepaper.cfm
Take a look at the ones on 'Oracle Identity Management' and on 'Developers and Identity Services'.
http://www.dbspecialists.com/files/presentations/implementing_oracle_11g_enterprise_user_security.pdf
This paper by Database Specialists shows how to use Oracle Identity Management to limit access to users such as developers through the use of roles. It shows some examples of users using their own account but having limited privileges based on the role they are given.
http://www.dbspecialists.com/files/presentations/implementing_oracle_11g_enterprise_user_security.pdf
And this Oracle White Paper, 'Oracle Database Security Checklist', is a more basic security doc that discusses the entire range of security issues that should be considered for an Oracle Database.
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/security/twp-security-checklist-database-1-132870.pdf
You don't mention what environment (PROD/QA/TEST/DEV) you are even talking about or whether the access is to deal with emergency issues or general reproduction and fixing of bugs.
Many sites create special READONLY roles, eg. READ_ONLY_APP1, and then grant privileges to those roles for tables/objects that application uses. Then that role can be granted to users that need privileges for that application and can be revoked when they no longer need it.
Some sites prefer creating special READONLY users that have those read only roles. If a user needs access the DBA changes the password and provides the account info to the user. When the user has completed their duties the DBA resets the password to something no one else knows.
Those special users have auditing on them and the user using them is responsible for all activity recorded in the logs during the time the user has access to that account.
In general you grant the minimum privileges needed and revoke them when they are no longer needed; generally through the use of roles.
>

>
Please explain that. Your question was about 'access to different tables'. How does PL/SQL access fit into that?
The important reason for the difference is that access is easily controlled thru the use of roles but in named PL/SQL blocks roles are disabled. So those special roles and accounts mentioned above are well-suited to allowing developers to query data but are not well-suited if the user needs to execute PL/SQL code belonging to another schema (the app schema). -
Best practice to process inbound soapenc:Array
Hi, I'm working my way through a real world example where I've sent a keyword search query to Amazon and it return 10 results. This works great. Now I want to loop thru the Array and put the returned values into a table in the database. I can't seen to get down to the element level via XQuery to assign the returned values to my local variables. The XML returned is defined in the wdsl as:
<xsd:complexType name="DetailsArray">
<xsd:complexContent>
<xsd:restriction base="soapenc:Array">
<xsd:attribute ref="soapenc:arrayType" wsdl:arrayType="typens:Details[]"/>
</xsd:restriction>
</xsd:complexContent>
</xsd:complexType>
<xsd:complexType name="Details">
What's the best practice for walking thru this incoming XML Array?
Thanks...MattHello again!
Thanks for quick reply!
The instance state says : closed.completed.
Perhaps the problem is not the insert into db, but the transformation activity?
This is what the audit trail (raw xml) looks like:

Best Practice Internet Security with ADO / OraMTS / OraOLEDB and 9i?
Hi people,
I have the following scenario to support and I URGENTLY need some information regarding the security model vs performance envelope of these platforms.
We currently are developing a web-application using IE 5.0^ as our browser, IIS 5.0 as our server, ASP (JScript) as our component glue, custom C++ COM+ middle tier components using ADO / Oracle OLE DB to talk to a Solaris based Oracle 9i instance.
Now it comes to light from the application requirements that the system should, if at all possible, be supporting Virtual Private Databases for subscribers [plus we need to ease backend data service development and row-level security combined with fine grained audit seems the way to go].
How does one use Oracle's superior row-level security model in this situation?
How does one get the MS middle tier to authenticate with the database given that our COM+ ADO components are all required to go through ONE connection string? [Grrrr]
Can we somehow give proxy rights to this identity so that it can "become" and authenticate with an OID/LDAP as an "Enterprise User"? If so, how?
I have seen a few examples of JDBC and OCI middle-tier authentication but how does one achieve the same result as efficiently as possible from the MS platform?
It almost appears, due to connection pooling that each call to the database on each open connection could potentially be requiring a different application context - how does one achieve this efficiently?
If this is not the way to go - how could it work?
What performance tradeoffs do we have using this architecture? (And potentially how will we migrate to .Net on the middle tier?)
As you can see, my questions are both architectural and technical. So, are there any case studies, white papers or best practice monographs on this subject that are available to either Technet members or Oracle Partners?
Alternatively, anyone else come up against this issue before?
Thanks for your attention,

Best practice for window management
Hi all,
I'm pretty new at flex and I have to develop an application.
I don't know yet what the best practices are to have a consistent layout and code
- The program must have different views (scheduling, settings, adminwindow, ....)
What is the best way to switch between these views? Should I use a tabbar or a buttonbar?
- What should a view be made off? Should I use different states, or should I switch between windows, or use something else?
That's it for now, thanks all.
Greets me
btw, I try to use spark as much as possible..Hi,
You can check these links and white papers which explains the business scenarios and best practices
