Audition 1.5 Mixer Problem...

Hello everyone,
Once again I will explain my setup.  2 track mixer, L/R outs turned into an 1/8 inch plug which i plug into my microphone slot on my laptop.
Here is the problem.
My cousin uses the same setup (his computer is right next to mine).  Whenver I run the mixer through my audition I have to turn down the main and channel levels to almost 1 or else it's too loud. Doing this muffles the sound coming from the mic (MXL condenser).  On his laptop though, he doesn't have to turn everything down because his volumes are fine.
What exactly would my problem be?

Laptop mic inputs are rarely documented well and rarely of sufficient audio quality for serious recording use. They may well be noisy and don't necessarily have a flat frequency response. They are intended for applications like Skype.
On some machines they are mono, on others stereo. On some better quality machines they can be switched to be line level inputs. so maybe this is what your cousin's machine is doing.
'If you are at the stage where you are using a mixer. you really need something better than the laptop mic input. Try to find a good usb interface from a known manufacturer - I'd suggest Edirol, Tascam, Echo Audio or E-Mu

  • Adobe Audition has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I have been using Audition 2.0 on this computer for quite some time and suddenly now when I open it, I get the cryptic error dialogue:
"Adobe Audition has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.  For more information about this error, click here."
When I click for more information, it's something useless like:
AppName: audition.exe    AppVer: 2.0.5306.2    ModName: unknown
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0   Offset: 65726168
Nothing on my computer has changed.  There are no viruses.  I have not added any new audio plug-ins.  I am completely up to date with all critical Windows XP SP3 updates and none have been downloaded and installed recently anyway.
I searched the knowledgebase and found a document that suggesting many things to try.  I tried them all, including running the Windows hard disk "check disk" tool with options to fix file system errors and recover bad sectors. I also defragmented the hard drive.  Lastly, I completely uninstalled Audition, then  manually deleted any remaining files, including registry entries as suggested in another knowledgebase article.
I then re-installed Audition 2.0 and it did exactly the same thing!  This it maddening.  Now it gets even more interesting.  I discovered that if I start up the
Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit that Adobe Audition installed also, then try to launch Audition from the toolkit, IT STARTS CORRECTLY!  I can then close the toolkit and use it like normal.  Weird work-around.
What the heck could possibly be going on?  Anyone have any ideas?  I've attached the error log file that is generated by the error but I doubt it will be of much help.
    Thanks!

stevefoobar2: I may have found a solution for you.
I had the same thing happen to me today. I was using Audition 2 this morning without any problems. But this afternoon, it started giving me the exact same error with no apparent reason. Nothing on my system had changed.
So I uninstalled it and installed Audition 3 in its place. Audition 3 continued to have the same problem that Audition 2 had, so we can assume that this is not something that was changed between versions.
But my attention was brought to the fact that you and I are both running Windows XP SP3 fully up-to-date. So I thought I'd try seeing it from the angle of a problem with Windows instead of Audition, and see if I didn't get a better result -
First, I logged on to Windows as Administrator. This may or may not be required, but you'll probably want to do it just in case (you'll see what I mean later). At this point, Audition still crashed the same way when I opened it, so I moved on to my next troubleshooting strategy -
Instead of opening Audition directly, I right-clicked the Audition icon and selected "Run as..." This may seem odd since I was already logged in as Administrator, but it proved to be the solution in my case.
In the "Run As" diolog, there are two main options: run as current user, or run as another user.
Since I was already logged in as Administrator, I could safely select the first option (run as current user). But here's the catch: selecting the first option allowed me to UNcheck the box underneath that says "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity" (see the attached picture)
Audition opened without any problems when I did this.
This makes me think that one of the Windows security features suddenly decided to block something that Audition was trying to do, crashing the program in the process. By turning off this security feature, the problem was solved. And I only had to do it once. Every time afterwards, Audition has opened without any problems when I simply open it from my desktop. Perhaps Windows now remembers not to block Audition in the future.
However, I have not restarted my computer yet, or logged off as Administrator. You may need to tweak this solution if you plan to do either of these things. You may end up having to "Run as" Audition every time you restart your computer or log off. You may even need to select the SECOND option, and run the program as Administrator with the appropriate password.
Anyway, this was the only post I could find on Adobe.com concerning this problem, so I thought I'd post my solution in case it helped someone else.

  • PCI Express X-FI Xtreme Audio - Mic and mixer problems

6PCI Express X-FI Xtreme Audio - Mic and mixer problems' Trouble started two days ago when I updated to the latest X-FI drivers. Now I have no mixer and I can't figure out how to get my mic to work. The only thing that has changed is the updating of drivers. I am using senheiser headphones with mic for use on ventrillo. In the old set up I could go into the mixer and tell the software that the Line-In was a mic and it would work perfectly. Now I can't get the mic to work at all since there is no creative mixer. The windows mixer doesn't allow you to do anything worth wild.
I don't have the old software so I can't go back to the old setup. I am using Vista 64. What the heck am I doing wrong? Why won't the software now recognize that I am plugging in a mic!?!?!?
    BAH!!!!
    PLEASE HELP!

Doesn't Vista have some sort of automatic checkpointing feature that gives you a way to back up to a point before you updated the drivers?

  • Adobe Audition line-in Recording Problems

    Hello,
I've just started using windows 7, used to and still do use on other computers windows xp.
I installed adobe audition 1.5 on the computer with windows 7.
In xp you had to select line in, in the recording control to allow you to record if something was playing in the background.
    see images: .
I can't seem to enable this function in 7, so i can't sample anything playing in the back ground.
Has anyone had this problem, do you know how to sort this out, please help.
    kind regards
    Dan W

You can probably do what you want. But you probably need to adjust settings within Adobe Audition.
First, since this is a new PC, it's really important to get all your hardware drivers and Windows 7 itself totally up-to-date.  Keep going back to Windows Update until Win 7 says it has installed all the downloads it can find for your new PC. Win 7 is pretty good about updating itself as needed.  Just let it do its thing. And then be sure that when you go to a website like youtube.com and play a video, you can hear sound over the PC speakers.
You probably already know how to tell whether stream recording will work in Audition, but just to be clear, if you're playing a video at youtube.com for example, and you can hear the sounds over the PC speaker and you have Audition in Record mode, you should be seeing the sound level bars at the bottom of the display dancing in time with the sounds you hear.  If they're not dancing, stream recording will not work.
To fix this, in AA1.5, go to Options>Device Properties.  Hit the "Wave In" tab (at the top)--not "Wave Out".  Near the top left of the window that pops when you click "Wave In" will be a window with a small arrow to the right of it.  Click on that small arrow.  It will show you a list of devices Audition thinks might be used to record sounds within Audition.  But if stream recording isn't working, Audition may be picking the wrong device to use.
Here's how to try a different device in Audition which may get stream recording working.  Follow the directions carefully here.  It's easy to skip a step and then it won't work. Unfortunately, setting devices in AA1.5 is unnecessarily unintuitive, IMO. Click the Change button to the right of the device window with the little arrow on "Wave In" tab.   On Recording Devices tab at the top, select a device in the window on the left (Unused Record Devices).  I can't tell you for sure which one will work with your PC, as this depends to an extent on your sound hardware which will be different from mine.  But two good ones to try first are Monitor and Line In. Click the device you want to try so it's highlighted, and then click the Use button.  It will move over to the box on the right (Multitrack Device Preference Order).  Click the Move Up button on the bottom there until the device you're trying next is raised up to "1st". Then click "OK" (not "X" or "Cancel") to close this window.  The display will then show the previous window and the device you elevated to 1st position should now appear in the device window there.  To the right of the Change button is a small check box labeled "Use this device in Edit View."  Be sure this box is checked and then click OK (not "X" or "Cancel") to close this window.  In WinXP, it used to help at this point to close and reopen Audition though I'm not sure it helps with Win 7; but you don't need to reboot the PC.
Now try playing that video in youtube again.  Can Audition stream record it?  If not, go back as before to Recording Devices and try a different device until you've tried each one of them in 1st position, being very careful that you are clicking OK to exit the two windows there and that "Use this device in Edit View" is checked each and every time you try a different device.
If the bars dance during Record mode, but you hear nothing in Audition when you play back the file, stream recording is now working but you may need to go back to Device Properties as above and this time pick a different device in "Wave Out" tab so Audition playback is correctly passed to your PC speakers.
Once you get it working, I strongly recommend making notes somewhere that you'll be able to find again if you have to reinstall everything, because as I say, this stuff is not intutive, and unless you have notes on the correct settings and how to get them on your PC, you'll find yourself out at sea again if you have to reinstall.

See my reply in the other thread. Please don't double post as it is confusing to give answers. Unfortunately your picture doesn't show any helpful information to give us a clue as to what the problem is. A more helpful image would be of the same view but with the Input/output selection shown (rather than the fx view) by clicking on the double arrow icon to the left of the fx one which is selected at present.

  • Audio Mix Problem

This has been driving me crazy for the last three hours and the deadline is end of day tomorrow. Here's what's happening:
I'm working with FCP 4.5 on a G5 Dual 2Ghz, OS 10.3.9. I finished editing a short 15 minute piece for a client. It consisted of some live footage of various places. The footage was all imported via a DV converter from VHS-C and Hi8 cameras. Audio was set to 48kHz There was a lot of editing to get the 2 hours of footage down to 15 minutes. As I was editing I was adjusting the audio volume of each clip so that the levels were similar from clip to clip. When playing back the timeline and watching the Audio Mixer window everything was fine. The faders would change as the playhead moved over each clip. Then we did a voice over. I made sure that the sample rate was set to 48k. That all went well. I then exported a mix for Soundtrack and created a music bed in Soundtrack. The Soundtrack project was set for 48k. I exported that mix and then imported the resulting .aif file into FCP. I added that to the timeline and that's where my problem began. The piece opens with some graphics for the first 30 seconds. The voiceover starts right away. When I play the timeline and look at the Audio Mixer everything looks fine. The voiceover channel (3) shows the audio level and the fader is at 0. The music bed channels (4/5) shows the levels and the fader is at zero (except for a brief bump up to +2 for a few seconds and then back to zero. And the audio for the video clips (channels 1/2) shows -inf on the fader and there is no signal, which is correct. Now when the playhead hits the 30 second mark and the audio from the video clips is supposed to enter; the channels for that audio never indicate any level, and the faders don't move from -inf. Also all of the other channel meters stop indicating the level. They just stop working. But the audio from the video clips is not even playing. I should be able to hear the on-scene audio when the video clips start. Even though all of the meters stop working the audio from the voiceover channel and the music bed do continue to play.
I looked through all of the appropriate settings and found the one for 'number of channels for live mixing' (or something similar) and it was set for 4. I thought that was going to solve everything, but unfortunately it didn't do anything. FWIW playback quality was set to 'low' on that same settings page.
Interestingly enough, if I just click in the timeline in random places while it is stopped, the faders will all move to what they are supposed to be set for at that point in time. However, if I play the timeline from that point there still won't be any audio levels indicated on the meters and the faders will not change as the timeline continues to play.
I can't think of anything else to try. I did reboot. I searched the archives here and didn't see anything similar to this problem. I'd really appreciate if someone could offer some suggestions. I hope I explained everything clearly enough.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Did the audio that won't play back now, playback
before you brought in the files from Soundtrack?
Yes, the audio tracks from the video clip played back fine before I brought in the Soundtrack music.
Is it possible you could have overwritten those
channels when you brought in the Soundtrack file?
No, because the Soundtrack music bed is on audio tracks 4/5 and the original audio from the video is on audio tracks 1/2. Also I can delete the Soundtrack file from the timeline and the audio on tracks 1/2 will play again and the meters and faders will respond properly.
If you load the problem clips in the viewer, do they
    playback their sound?
I think they did, but I'm going to have to try again to be sure. I'm on another computer right now. I will do that within the hour and update this post.
Have you tried doing an audio mixdown?
    rh
By mixdown, do you mean exporting the audio from the timeline? If so, I haven't done that because since I'm not hearing the audio from the video tracks I'm assuming it won't be in the mix when I export.
Thanks for helping out. I'm going to try a few more things and post back.
    Regards,
    Chris

Hi, i'm using xp64 with 2gb ram, and after upgrade to 4gb my audigy 2zs (accord to everest and dxdiag) stops suppord hardware mixing and reporting 0 buffers instead of 64 and no eax support,? so is it driver/soundcard or other hardware problem?

Ah shoot.  I get that same "message" over and over again too, but it's not related to your problem.  I think that's just a GTK widget problem with the panel, trying to resize and fit some stuff I guess.  That constant "message" is, however, interfering with seeing what's crashing, since it's scrolling off that VC.  I don't know where else xfce4 pipes it's errors to.
I'll check through the source a bit and see if I can help you out.
You could try this for capturing the VC/1 output: "startxfce4 &> /tmp/xfce4.log"
Start up xfce that way, open up a terminal in xfce and use "tail -f /tmp/xfce4.log" (hit ctrl-c to cancel the "tail" process at any time).  Try to repeat those steps which give you an error with the settings menu, and watch what reads out in your terminal.  If for some reason it crashes, open up that file later and look at the last few lines in the file before it crashed.  You'll probably have to scroll down a bit since it will probably pipe all your xinit stuff in there too.

  • Film Mix Problems

    Okay,
I just finished a mix for a feature length film using Logic Pro, and the Director of the film imported the 24 bit 48K AIFF files into Final Cut, in order to fit the audio on a DVD he had to compress it using AC3 which apparently is the Dolby Digital compression. The problem is, something happened to the audio, either when he imported it into final cut or performed the AC3 compression, specifically, the high end was boosted, and/or the mid-range was reduced, and the bass seems like it was slightly reduced. Maybe the bass seems like it's been reduced because the high end was enhanced, but it definitely sounds as if the mid-range has been lessened. Also, we separated the film by Act so I had to give him 4 audio files for 4 acts, two of the audio files purposely overlapped, so when he exported the audio in Final Cut, he chose "Channel Grouped" rather than "Stereo Mix" on the export of the audio, with the Channel Grouped feature, is Final cut summing the files, if so, does it have a weak algorithm that is responsible for what I'm hearing? Or is it the AC3, a little bit of both? Has anyone had this problem with importing files into final cut, or compressing them with AC3? Any fixes?
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 4 GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   MOTU 896

i've never heard of those problems.
AC3 is fairly standard compression to be muxed into mp2. my guess is the channels he put your audio files on had some mixer and eq settings that he had forgotten about. the other thing you need to check is the settings for the AC3. what bit rate did he use? i think for DVD it is supposed to be 224 kbps. considering mp3 sounds great all the way down to 128 i wouldn't have thought it a big problem.
the final audio is stereo on your film so obviously FCP is summing them. but this kind of digital summing won't cause any problems. your issues are elsewhere.
