Audition grinds to a halt when I zoom in on a complex multitrack session.

Howdy.
I'm putting Audition up against a pretty powerful computer:
- 4 GB RAM
- Quad core at 2.4 Ghz per core
- All SATA hard drives
- nVidia 8800 video card
That said, when I get into a complex multi-track session (more than about 10 tracks with effects) and start zooming in tight, the program grinds to a total halt. The CPU usage on all four cores spikes to 100%, but the audio rarely drops out.
For example, in a recent remix with 30 tracks (and minimal effects), I had zoomed in to just a single measure, and it was taking Audition about 5 to 7 seconds just to respond to clicks and keyboard strokes. Once I zoom out, the problem magically resolves.
And you know...I seem to remember this happening back in Audition 1.5 as well.
Is this just me? I can definitely reproduce it on two entirely different (and powerful) computers. Anyone else had this problem and/or know how to fix it?

I use an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro with dual monitors and its certainly not a top of the range card nor as SteveG suggests should it be.
> Maybe it's just me, but could you please explain how a faster drive makes a difference to the performance when zoomed in? Because on the face of it, that makes no sense.
It could have something to do with the alignment of the planets rather than the faster hard drive but all I can do is give the facts, my observations and logical conclusions :-)
Zoom in for really close work with large track count recorded at 44.1k with a 7200 rpm drive and I would have an annoying lag of about 2ish seconds enough to really disrupt workflow.
Do nothing else but add a 10k rpm drive and make that my primary work drive - problem gone.
Think about the logic of it for a minute.
You are somewhere say in the middle of the song you zoom in (I'm thinking just now while I'm typing - which is novel in itself - that Steve you may be thinking that the lag is in the zoom - its not and that could be the confusion but I'll continue) and press play. AA has to load the tracks position the file pointers of all track at the beginning of the file then move each pointer to the position in the song for each track to your zoom point and then play the tracks.
Worse for 48k files and probably worse (can't tell cause I usually have heaps of edits) with heaps of slices as each is a virtual copy of the original track.
That's a lot of work and a lot of data to move around - I'm seriosly looking at the solid state drives with lower seek times.
BlairT you have some serious PC issues cause that machine should be coping without a problem.

  • Lion grinds to a halt when a network volume is mounted

Ok, so I've got a network drive that I mount infrequently, but when i do the OS grinds to a halt. I don't think it's Spotlight because it doesn't tell me it's indexing the drive in the Spotlight tab. I've tried adding it to the privacy tab in Preferences too but that makes no difference. iStat Menus sometimes shows big spikes of CPU usage across all cores at the time, yet oddly at others it doesn't. The network section of iStat also shows wildly varying network traffic whilst it's happening too, sometimes upto 3MB/s, but this fluctuates all over the place.
What can I use to try and track down what's happening? It's a fairly easy bug to reproduce, but the system is pretty unusable while it's actually happening; can take 10-15 seconds to respond to a click because of the inevitable beachball of doom. Any suggestions?
Just in case it helps, it's a Samba share from a ZFS filesystem.

  • Computer performance grinds to a halt when I plug AC

Basically, when I plug the AC power to my laptop, the performance becomes unbearable.
Processes that were using 10% previously, shoot up to 60%.
Linux is to at fault, because even the pre-initrd bootup time is really slow, 5 times the usual.
How would I go about debugging this?

I had an issue with a somehow broken power supply and a Dell Latitude D430. The laptop recognizes an "unsupported power supply", it does not load the battery and sticks the cpu at 800MHz. If I unplugged the power supply, the laptop is able to run at all frequencies. Maybe HP has similar implementations in their BIOS and power supplies.

  • Computer grinds to a halt when recording video

    Hi,
I am new to captivate, I am trying to record a demonstration
of a couple of features of a website.
I set captivate to full motion mode, and tried to record
logging into the site. Unfortunately captivate was using 100% of my
available CPU usage so the browser was crawling, so much so that
you could see objects move as the browser read their css styles.
This, naturally, affected the output video, which while being
extremely good quality just replayed the very very slow browsing I
    had recorded.
My PC isn't slow with other adobe applications (cs3 etc), it
is a P4 2.8 Ghz with 2 GB RAM and Windows XP 32 Bit. I know if you
have a dual core machine you can set 1 processor to serve only 1
application, which i suppose would resolve the problem. But really
i'm after a solution that doesn't involve buying a new PC.
    I appreciate any advice!
    Cheers!

Hello again, I can see that your Mac is running last year's 2011 generation Macbook Air, am I correct? If older, then I suppose that it is because likely of the new operating system, with new software added in, I think it is stressing the RAM a lot. Also, likely is because your using a lot of your hard drive's storage. Other than that, you can go and configure your mac or get a new one. These are suggestions I could offer, on the other hand I think you will have to stop updating your operating system. Not software updates, but operating system. Means you maybe sticking to Mountain Lion for "a while". Sorry I couldn't be much of a help. But yes, those are old specs and you may be stressing your computer hardware.
Another option is to get expensive accessories like an external hard drive and buying more RAM. Your graphics card should be fine since your using an Air likely just for work and internet browsing.

  • My machine grinds to a near halt when time machine is backing up

My machine grinds to a near halt when time machine is backing up. Is there any way to prevent this?

How much data is it backing-up? Are you making frequent changes to big files? Are you using any 3rd-party apps that store their data in one big file (like a database)? Entourage is one that works that way.
If you're not sure what's getting backed-up, you might want to download the TimeTracker app, from www.charlessoft.com.
It shows most of the files saved by TM for each backup (excluding some hidden/system files, etc.). Take a look at it for one of the problem backups, to see what's going on.
If you see something you can't identify, post the name(s) here and we'll see if anybody is familiar with them.

  • Logic grinds to a crawl when.....

....song length gets too long. i have just been working on a documentary, not massively loaded with plug-ins etc and the further into it i get the less responsive logic becomes. let me be clear about that - even once 30 minutes of music (with breaks) is finished, going back to the beginning of the song and everything is perky again. the further into it i go, the choppier the video gets, the slower screen redraws and the stickier everything becomes. greater lag between a command and a reponse.
by contrast, i have also been working on an eight minute film, completely music led that is about as crammed with plug-ins, midi data, video and audio tracks as you could possibly imagine, but it is not as unresponsive. it IS sticky, but i could put that down to what in today's terms is a feeble computer for doing this sort of thing on.
my question is...has anybody noticed this? is it possibly my antiquated system? (i was in the market for a new system until the boiler went)
does everything run smoothly on a G5 over a half hour length? bear in mind the effect is exacerbated by data, plug-ins etc, but why would everything run smoothly at the beginning of a song loaded up but not at the end?

different rohan! it's not a very common name i know. the guy you were responding to was rohan staton. it was an interesting thread though...
i had a problem too with very long regions. we were compiling the music track for a long documentary and i found that logic was starting to crash, grind to a halt and all sorts of nasty things just with a song length of over an hour. yet it only had a handful of audio files - no plugs instruments etc. but it did have one very very long file - about 50 mins. reducing the tempo helped but didn't completely solve the problem. at least it didn't crash. this was pre 7.1
my most recent project which comprised of a short film and doco, has lead to an uncommon number of crashes since going onto 7.1. (or 7.1.1) combined with slow response as the files became more complex and/or longer it is really starting to bother me. generally crashes tend to happen either when opening the score editor, or when the system hasn't caught up with my instructions. by that i mean, i might stop the sequencer and open a plug-in. if i do the latter too close the former it might crash.
i have been reorganizing memory and regularly restarting logic and/or the machine, and that certainly helps. i really want to know how better this type of performance will be with a G5. it is really the only real reason that i would contemplate upgrading. it is time to upgrade, i think, when i can run logic faster than the computer.

  • Air and mac operating system grinding to a halt

I'm running air applications on Mac Mini computers (predominantly running 10.7.2) and am finding that after a few weeks of running constantly the air app gradually slows down, then grinds to a halt. The applications are dynamic animations that run full screen 1080p - they are artworks that are left on constantly.
It then becomes impossible (or very slow) to quit the air app and the whole computer will respond very slowly or not at all. After this has happened a few times the computer will not even restart and will need the system re-installing.
I've tried running various statistics outputting things, like MR Doobs Hi-Res-Stats - so I can monitor the framerate, memory and children. There are no obvious problems there. The cause of the issue is very hard to debug as it initially takes weeks for this error to occur, though after that it re-occurs more frequently and seems to affect the Mac OS too.
The Mac mini is a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 with AMDRadeon HD 6630M 256MB graphics. This model does not have automatic graphics switching which i've seen can cause problems.
I am currently upgrading the os and seeing if that will help, but it will probably take weeks of constant running to see a repeat in the issue.

Ive run a test version and checked the memory usage using some open source monitors like the one described above (high res stats). Im no expert with trying to test for memory leaks, but this does give feedback to direct, max direct, total and garbage. After running this air app for a few days the memory remains stable. On my test screen the direct and max direct are around 30 and 45 (i assume its MB).
Theres an image attached with these monitors - this picture is taken with me testing the movie in the flash ide so i believe thats making these values much higher, however they also are remaining stable.
I think the version of air used initially was 2.5 (this is the one thats misbehaving), i've since loaded version 3.1 into my copy of flash CS5.5, i need to run a long test with this version too. The trouble is that problems seem to take weeks to appear. I will be setting up the final version of this mac mini setup to restart automatically every night.
I'm currently testing a version of this film as a flash projector rather than air to see what that does. Please let me know what other tests i can run. I can post the code i'm using - its not that big (200 or so lines)
To explain a bit more about what i'm doing - I work for an artist who makes dynamic (randomised) animations which play on HD screens using Macs and PCs. These will generally be left on all day, some are never turned off, some are. I've seen a few different films recently freeze (fine when its quit and restarted) or in this case slow down to almost 1 frame every 30 seconds and completely break the computer, in some cases requiring the system to be re-installed (the film i'm talking about falls into the latter situation).

  • When I 'zoom' my browser, it does not hold the zoom for the next view and I have to 're-zoom, it used to stay at a chosen level of zoom, any ideas?'

I used to be when I zoomed the view using Ctrl and mouse wheel that the next page would be at the sam elevel of zoom. Now I have to re-zoom every time I open a page.

The Firefox Page Zoom feature does a domain by domain level of saving the users preferred zoom level settings, there is no default Page Zoom level setting in Firefox.

  • Flash mp3 player doesn't scale when page zoomed

It's possible there is nothing I can do to fix this, but wanted your expert advice.  Thanks for looking at this.  Gary
I have installed a mp3 player on my site from dewplayer http://www.alsacreations.fr/dewplayer
It looks fine when I pull it up in a browser:
But when I zoom the page (control-alt-scroll) the player remains the same size and does not scale with the page.
It does scale correctly if you are minimizing the window (ie: clicking the top right minimize box on the browser).

I have the same issue, and it is a browser issue. Like you mentioned, Chrome and Internet Explorer scale all Flash content properly. I have tried Firefox, Nightly, and Cyberfox (Firefox-based) and they all have the same problem. It isn't a dealbreaker for me right now but it is very annoying and I'd love it if the developers at Mozilla could look into fixing it (possibly in collaboration with Adobe). Also, even using the Flash beta (version 16) doesn't work.

  • Super thin black border showing around video when I zoom out or pan the video...

    Hi all,
I have a video I'm making in Adobe Premier Pro CS5.5. I am using 2 video slots in Premiere Pro's sequence area. A white image is in "Video 1" spot and a video is in"Video 2" spot.
The white image in "Video 1" slot is the exact same color as the background color of the video in "Video 2" slot.
The reason for this is when I zoom the video out or pan it slightly off the screen I just want it to look like the video is moving (and I don't want anyone to be able to see the black backdrop that is normal background color on a Premiere Pro video).
After I go to effects control, and change the position and scale of the video; the video scales out and pans over fine ...however, the border of the video shows slightly ...even flickers a little. Is there a way to get rid of this thin black border line? ..So no one can tell where the video (in "video 2" slot) ends and where that white background I have in "video 1" is ...by removing this flickering border?
Here's a Screencast of the issue. I point at that thin border I'm talking about when I pan the video over (which reveals the white backdrop):http: Screencast.com/t/45xp0bQ82f
Thank you so much for any help you can provide. I appreciate it.

  • When i zoom in google chrome, the paragraphs are resized to adjust without horizontal scroll. can this be done in safari?

when i zoom in a website while viewing in chrome, there is less chance of the horizontal scroll. but the same page in safari leads to lot of horizontal scroll.
vertical scrolling is ok while reading, but not both.

yeah smart zoom is definelty good, thanks for the quick response, i feel home by getting such quick response.
but may be few cases i felt chrome has done some good tweeks while zooming the paragraph. may be when i find specific pages i will post them.
