Audition won't play or record. Why? What do I do?

In other words, you can open a file, but the Transport controls don't do anything. This applies to all versions of Audition...
Pretty much invariably when this happens, it's because Audition has become disconnected from your sound device, either external or internal. So the first thing you have to do is go to the Preferences page, select Hardware Setup, and make sure that it's selected there. Close the page, and then try again.
If, by any minute chance this doesn't fix the problem, then ask on the forum for more help, and make sure that you tell us specifically about your particular machine and how it's configured. But, this really is one of those 'one-solution-only' problems, as a rule.

I have the same problem. Just bought a new U2 Ipod this week, I think it played the video once. After that, it just kept freezing up, now I can't get it to play anymore. I ran Ipod updater a hundred times, restored it at least 20 times in the last two days, but it just keeps freezing up, also when playing music, scrolling, updating,... This s* badly, as I travel a lot and want to take it with me.
I think you should just take it to a store and complain.

  • CS5.5 will open a session or wav but won't play or record.

This is a strange problem because it was working before just fine. But now, when I open up my multitrack or just a simple wav, I can't get it to play or record or anything, all the buttons are faded. Sound works on my windows 7 system. Preferences -> Audio Channel Mapping reveals I have "HD Audio" for both recording L/R and playing L/R. Any help? :/

Go to Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware and check what's selected there.  "HD Audio" sounds like you may be using a built in Realtek device.  You'll need to make sure that the proper output is selected there...maybe "Speakers" or similar, depending on your set up.  You also need to select what you want to record on the recording menu...maybe microphone.
Once you've checked this, also go to the Audio setup in your Windows control panel and make sure that both the Playback and Recording devices are set to the same sample rate (though a mis match here normally results in an error message.
One of the drawbacks of using the built in audio is that other applications can grab it and change the settings without you knowing.

  • My songs are duplicated i itunes but if i remove one entry, the other won't play anymore...what do i do?

After my friend transferred my songs to my new laptop, i have installed itunes. First i had 2 or 3 entries of the same song, because i had a music files (mostly
mp3), and the 2 entries were from Itunes music files. One entry played, the other wouldn't (exclamation point). As i have  a couple thousand songs, i decided to consolidate into Itunes Media, thinking i could then uninstall Itunes, Reinstall it and delete my Itunes music folder.
But it probably was the wrong way to go. Now I have an Itunes media folder and an Itunes music folder. If i delete one of them from my computer, itunes says it cannot find the track. But the problem is now it takes twice as much space on my computer and last but not least, almost every song is duplicated in Itunes.
If I delete one of the two entries, the song won't play (exclamation point again). it's like each file of the song exist in his own file, but cannot play if the other version of the song isn't there.
So i'm stuck with a duplicated list of songs in Itunes and 30 Go of songs on my laptop...<
any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks!

I would guess that if they both point to the same file and you delete one of them, you have deleted the file. Therefore it is no longer there to be played.
I'm not really sure how you got into this situation.  I'm also not sure if you have multiple copies of the same songs on your drive or just multiple entries in the library. It sounds like you  haven't gotten very far, that you have not yet set up playlists that you would be heartbroken to lose. If you have room on your drive, I might suggest closing iTunes, renaming both of those media folders, then restarting iTunes and creating a brand new library.  I would set iTunes to copy media files to the library when it imports them so that it all gets consolidated. I would add the music folder (which is probably a sub-folder of those other folders) from one of your two existing folders and see what happens. Then I'd add the other.
As a normal precaution, I highly recommend backing up your two music folders before starting this.
When all is done and you are happy, you should be able to delete the older folders.  This is the step that begs for a backup. First, though, I'd change the names of the two older folders again and see if iTunes plays your music. If not, it didn't make a copy and it's still looking in the old folders.  You might want keep them around for a while and only delete them when you need drive space.  I am loathe to delete anything unnecessarily, just in case there is a problem.
I'm not a Windows user so I can't help with the details on how to do this on a PC.

  • Audition does not play nor record

Auditon CS6 does not play nor record.
I can click into the file but when I press play or space there is no reaction. "no transport".
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program. No luck.
Earlier the onboard processor hat to be replaced (hp warranty). Could it be that this has caused Audition to react strangely. Maybe due to a processor id not being equal to the original setup?
    Windows 7 Pro, SP1, HP Workstation Z620 64Bit

When Audition's transport doesn't work, it's because it has become disconnected from your sound device. Go into Preferences > Hardware setup, and reconnect it! Should all work fine then, assuming that your sound device is actually okay...

  • Some of the songs on my iPod won't play anymore. Why?

Since I got the last software update some of my songs won't play at all. Some will, but most of them won't. Until the update I had no problems. I've seen similar discussions all over the internet and none of the proposed solutions work.
    I've tried:
Converting my songs from MP3 to AAC.
    Restarting my iPod.
Many have tried restoring there iPods to factory settings, even removing there music from iTunes, putting them back on then re-syncing, but that didn't help so I won't waste a good 6 to 8 hours (considering my large amount of music.)
If it helps I have an iPod Touch (4th Generation)

Well, then the answer seems to be that you've got corrupted music files in your library. This is why attempting to convert to AIFF fails in some instances. The only likely fix is to delete then re-import the tracks - assuming you have the CDs. If you do this, you should sync your iPod between deleting and re-ripping. I have over 12,000 songs in my library (all compressed - though MP3), and more than 90% were ripped from CDs using iTunes. The occasional issues I have experienced have been resolved by re-ripping.
I have found that - at least on a Windows PC - I get better results if I do not run any other processes when ripping music with iTunes.

  • I previoulsy have adding many CD to my iTunes music library and then synched them with my iPhone so that I have all music in both places. And I could the CDs in iTunes or iPhone with no problems. Recently, my iTunes "sees" the music but won't play it. Why

I have added many CD to my iTunes music library and then synched them with my iPhone so that I have all music in both places. Then I could the play them in iTunes or iPhone with no problems. Recently, my iTunes "sees" the music library but won't play any of it becuase "the original could not be found". If I attach my iPhone, then it pays them through the iPhone, but still not through the library in iTunes. How can I get the music library on my iPhone to transfer (i.e. restore it) to iTunes? I have iPhone 4S but have not upgraded to the iOS 6, and have not had any problems until last week.  Help!  Thanks.

Check the manual for whatever backup program you used, or, if you just copied the files over, copy them that.
How to restore data to your PC is outside the scope of these forums.

  • ITunes Match won't play complete songs, why?

I got itunes match when it first came out.
I am running iTunes 10.5.2 for Windows (hopefully getting a Mac soon).
    I have a black iPhone 4S 32GB, and a black iPad 2 32GB, AT&T 3G.
Both devices are running iOS 5.0.1.
When I play songs from iTunes on my computer, everything is perfect.  All songs play all the way through.
When I play songs from iPad or iPhone, many, many songs will NOT play all the way through.  Most of these songs stop playing about half-way or 3/4 of the way thru the song.  For the most part, THESE ARE SONGS PURCHASED DIRECTLY FROM ITUNES!!
The music timer will keep running, like the song is still playing, but it is just dead air.  Sometimes it jumps to the next track, and it will play the next track even though the music timer is still running and still showing the original song title, not the next track title.
Some of the songs from my personal collection do the same thing, but so far it is mostly content I paid Apple for thru iTunes.
Why won't it play the complete song?  I have had a ticket open for weeks on this issue.  I have spoken with Apple Tech Support no less than four times.  I have even spoken with Tech Support Supervisors, I even have Tech Support manager's phone numbers, but nobody knows anything.
I have turned off iTunes Match, turned it back on. Done a complete restore on iPad and iPhone.  Deleted specific songs, readded them.  I've re-downloaded the entire music library twice.  I am very close to giving up.  iTunes match could be so sweet, but for me it is terribly broken.
I have searched these forums for ideas, but have come up empty.  Anybody having these issues?  Any ideas on how to resolve it?

i am doing all of this at home, while connected to high-speed wifi.  when i say high speed wifi, i mean like over 40 Mbps downstream (say what you will about CableOne, but they have screaming data speeds).
the problem files are "normal songs" approx 4 or 5 minutes or less. again, they were purchased from the itunes store.
for what it's worth, about two hours ago, i uninstalled itunes completely from my computer, restarted the machine, then redownloaded itunes from apple.com.  i also reset both devices (ipad and iphone) again.
i turned off itunes match on both devices, signed out of the store in both devices (settings/store/apple id) then set everything back up from scratch.  after all this, the same exact thing is happening with the same exact songs.
funny thing is this:  it always happens to the very same songs, and the music cuts off at exactly the same time, down to the exact second.  the source file shouldn't be corrupted because the file is from itunes, and because if i play it directly on my computer on itunes, it plays perfectly.
    VERY MYSTERIOUS.

  • Audition won't play!

I think its related to upgrading to Mountain Lion on mac, but very recently at least, Audition now refuses to play.
It launches ok, loads a file ok, but when I hit space bar or play button, it looks like it should be playing, but its just stopped. Has anyone else had this behavior?
I really need Audition so its very annoying!
    Mark

Try not to get too excited about a word - most errors of this sort are made in ignorance. That's not a sin, and is quite forgivable; not everybody is expected to know everything.
And I think you'll find that if you do a fresh install of Audition and select a sound device to use, the playback sync is set to internal by default - otherwise just about everybody would complain about it, and they don't. The time that this will fail is if you are using a digital input, where external sync is absolutely required to run the device. In this case, the default almost certainly needs to be altered. If the input is analog though, the device's internal sync is generally applied to the whole device. Not only that, but not all manufacturers of sound devices handle this in exactly the same way - which is why the options to alter things are there.
And if you want to be a ProTools apologist, that's fine - but you are comparing dissimilar products, especially if you are using PT hardware; their rules may well be different. But just because they have the best marketing dept in existence doesn't automatically make them 'right' about everything, I can assure you.

  • My iTunes library won't play most songs, why, & how can I get them back?

I've had these songs on my library for ages, there has been no problem, then the next day... BAM! They don't play. I click on the 'Play Album' button, or the song title and NOTHING happens, the bar doesn't even some up at the top! It's as if I didn't even click on it... But I did.
I've tried deleting them from the library them adding them again... But then they don't even show up at all. However, they do play on Windows Media Player.
Can anybody help me with this? I'm so annoyed, and I think I might cry.

    Welcome to AD!
Do the songs have exclamation points to the left of them?
Are they on an external hard drive?
Did you install some other software recently? Take a Windows update? A security software update?
+there has been no problem, then the next day... BAM!+
With computers, if something works one day and then not the next, we need to know what has changed. SOMETHING changed.
One quick thing to try is restart your PC. Don't laugh, that's fixed many a ghost in the machine.

  • Music Transferred, won't play...why?

Have latest iTunes software, brand new Nano, Synched the new device, PC screen shows play lists in the Nano, ajppropriate memory gone shown at bottom of iTunes window .... but, when I eject the Nano and try to play, the music is not there? What am I missing? (Have two iPod Mini's and never had this problem before.) Thanks for your help.

hmmmm. let's just backtrack to something you said earlier:
I used the CD to install the updates for itunes and the ipod software.
can you doublecheck your itunes version number for us? go "help > about itunes" and wait for the number to scroll up from the bottom.
if you've got a version 6.0.0.18 or a 6.0.1.3, it's possible to get a version of the following problem without getting the warning message saying that you have compatibility settings checked:
iTunes for Windows: Audio files do not play in iTunes 5 or 6
(it would be a bit unusual to get audio problems with video clips if you had this ... often folks would only hear sound from their video tracks. but we'd better check on it, just in case.)

  • Audition won't play (S/PDIF, OSX)

    Hey there.
I have this issue for some months now and tried to get around it several times but no solution turned out to work.
I have tried to reset all audio devices, reconfigured everything, reinstalled the OSX and also, this doesn't work with Audition CC either.
    First, here's my specifications:
    Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2010)
Intel High Definition Audio [S/PDIF used over ONKYO PR-SC5509, BOSE Acoustimass 15]
    OSX 10.8.4
12 GB RAM / 3.2 Ghz (Quad) Xeon
    Here's my audio-device settings (Audition):
I'm quite confused about this, Windows' Audition plays audio fine (that is, independent of format: 44 khz, 48 khz and 96 khz work).
    My channel map:
    Here's my audio device overview:
Any chance fixing this? Thank you!

The "play" sign turned green; nothing else happens.
However, Audition doesn't even play music if I connect a cinch soundsystem.
I tried creating a virtual "main device" from the Audio-Midi-Setup, which didn't help it at all. Also, forcing the sample rate doesn't work. Disabling "computer specific" settings neither.. I'd be thrilled to see it working because this issue accelerates the obsolescence of OSX on my Mac
Actually, I tried every settings toggle there could be.. which didn't work. Also, resetting Audition doesn't do anything.
Here's Audition CC next to Audition CS6 — both trying to play but failing:
    Thanks for your help!

  • Rented a movie on itunes, but it won't play or transfer, why?

I rented a movie on itunes, but when trying to play it the computer prompts me "itunes has stopped working" and then crashes. Then when trying to transfer the rental, thinking it was possibly a computer issue, itunes then notifies me that it cannot transfer because my computer has not been authorized to play the movie. The rental movie was not only purchased and downloaded on an authorized computer, I also attempted to humor it and authorize it again, yet it remains in the same condition after several tries.
I was attempting to transfer it to an iphone 4s, but if there is a possibility of playing it on a computer it would be prefered. My operating system is Windows 7, if that helps.

I've seen this when downloaded to a computer/device that wasn't authorized.  Try to re-authorize in case it (or someone else) became de-authorized again.

  • HT1349 my iMovie recording system won't play the recording

im trying to play my recordings from imovie and its not playing! i have a project due in a couple days and i need help. i dont understand all the technological words so please describe it to me in a 13 year old language.

I just discovered this problem with both IE8 and Firefox. Adobe is aware of the issue:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/872999?tstart=0
I followed the instructions in the above link and at least got videos working again in IE8, it says this also works for IE9 but I didn't try that out.
To make youtube videos work in firefox I put an s in http: to make the URL read https: and that allows the videos to play.
The other working fix I found is to clear the offline storage cache by going to Tools > Options > Advanced >Network > Clear Now button. After clearing the cache and restarting firefox youtube now works.

  • Well i am going to get a macbook pro non-retina should i get 4gb or 8gb i asked because i have lots of files and i play and record games what gb should i do?

i have to get a new computer i want to get a macbook pro non retina but i use my computer alot with school i have lots of files and picture but what should i get 4gb or 8gb

You need storage space for your files. You need RAM in order to run programs. They are not the same.
    1. Get 8 GBs of RAM.
    2. Get a large hard drive or SSD to store your files. The bigger, the better.

  • Playing Imported Audio Books - tracks won't play in order - why?

I import a lot of Audio Book CDs into my iPod Touch for convenience.
The problem is that although the tracks import in order, are correctly named and play in order from iTunes on the PC they almost never play in order on my IPod Touch, Ipod Classic or iPhone.
The Ipod just seems to shuffle playing order. I have disabled shuffle. The iPod is not automatically shuffling due to shaking.
How do I get the tracks to play in the correct orderr.

Here are some hints and guidelines for labeling and organizing audiobooks in iTunes.
Click on the first file of the audiobook imported files list. Press and hold down the “Shift” key while doing so. While you continue to hold this key down, press the down arrow on your keyboard repeatedly until all of the files (chapters) for the first audiobook are selected. At the last file of the first audiobook, click your left mouse button once. You will see all the files from the first to last file highlighted.
Go back into the “File” menu on iTunes and click on “Get Info.” This will bring up a menu of settings you can apply to the highlighted files. Click on the “Options” tab in the settings menu that appears. Make sure the media type is selected as “audiobook.” Next to “Remember position” the option of “Yes” should be indicated.
Next you’ll want to properly label the audiobook audio files. Click on the “Info” tab and fill out relevant information you want to include on the filenames for easy access. Under “album name” put the name of the book and under “artist name” put the name of the author.
Save the settings. Click on “Audiobooks” in the long left hand side menu in iTunes. This should be in the upper left hand area. You will see a list of your newly renamed audiobook files to the right hand side.
Right click on each file individually starting with the first file of the audiobook. Click “Get Info” and under the “Name” section enter “Chapter 01” and repeat this process for each track going in order changing the chapter number by one number higher each time. Chapters 1 through 9 must have a zero before the primary number such as Chapter 01 and Chapter 09.
When you are finished the audiobook will not only be in the proper track order which allows you to play the chapters in order, but the audiobook will be labeled and easy to find.
