Aurora Cards-bad boys?

I don't see much conversation about Aurora's video capture card.
I have one and have been very pleased with it.
Is this not a favored card for most users?
dc

Hardly ever. Hope someone else chimes in.

  • G4ti4200 card bad?? help

Hi all, I need a little help. I've got a MSi 4200 card that I can't get to run. I have a Gigabyte mb. I thought at first it was the mb since it has issues with GF4 cards. I rma'd the mb and finally after a month it returned yesterday.
What it does is the computer boots up fine till the first Windows screen appears. Then that screen freezes. The hard drive continues on and the computer finishes booting, but still stuck on the Windows screen. I've even bought another mb, an ECS one.. Does the very same thing. I can put my old Gf2mx in and its fine. I've played around with every setting in the bios I can find, with no difference.
    Any ideas???   Bad card??

    hello,
I had the same problem as u witht he screen started flickerin.  this is what i did.. I tought it was my puter so i tried it in my other back up and it worked.  It worked for 5 min then it started teh flickern stuff.  I like is this.  I put it back in my other puter turn it on and it worked.  After about 5 min agin it started the flickerin.  So i took the case of my cpu and put a fan by it.  Sure enought it works now.  I think the card has a defect with the heat displacement in my opion.  I've seen lots of post about the same as yours.  No guys my fan isn't clogged as i do have 1 120mm fan for exhast, 2 80 mm fans and 2 pci slot fans with 1 of them being exhast.  I also have a minion imt 4000 case with vents on the sides.  The probelm is heat and its hard to fix.  But the fan did the trick with the ac.  I too am waitin on a reply from tech its been about a week also.  I hope this helps.

  • K8N neo2 first time ocing this bad boy

I have had my computer setup for about three months now and I am ready to start ocing it finally after messing around with my watercooling and everything else.
My stats are in my sig and this is what I have done so far.
I have my sATA drives in a raid0 array on sata ports 3+4 (locked)
I have my agp frequency set to 67 to lock it ( I have read this at several other different places)
I lowered my htt multi to 4x. My vcore is at default 1.5 I am using 1.4 bios
I upped the fsb in 5mhz increments
    I posted so far at
    205
    210
    215
220 currently running at 11x multi for 2420 mhz, HTT frequency 880mhz
I have not messed with anything else so far. I posted and I am running fine right now while I type this with prime95 torture test running.
I am new to ocing a64's after making the transition from an old 2500+xp chip. I have a lot of data on my raid array that I do not want to lose by corrupting my windows installation. I did this when I was ocing my 2500+ and I lost a ton of data.
I was thinking of just letting prime95 torture run for 10-12 hours and then raising the fsb another 5mhz.
I have heard that this board does not like ocz eb but I have never had a single problem with it.
Where should I go from here to be on the safe side without corrupting my windows install to find my highest overclock?
I also noticed that when I turn on my computer my cpu temp sticks at 43c and won't move unless I restart the computer and then I get a temp reading of 37c idle and at load I hit about 44c. I have a tdx installed on my cpu and I doubt that the temps are even reading right.  I am using mbm5; does anyone know just how off the temps are for this board?
    Thanks a bunch

I have had this machine running about one week now... and in my sig is the results...
I think this 2600mhz HTx4 is not too bad with these cheap mems... apacer running at 216mhz with 2,5-3-3-6 settings
I have stock cooling in cpu, and temps are about 40 on idle and watercooling is still waiting for an isnpiration... and then i am going to try overclock this winchester

  • Is my wireless card bad?

I have just spoken to Lenovo support and tried some things to resolve my wireless connectivity, but before I ship my computer back, which I really do not want to do, I thought I would ask for some help here...
I have a T510 running an Intel Centrino Ulimate-N 6300 wireless card.  For quite a few weeks now, I have had problems with dropped internet connections.  I first thought the problem was my internet connection or router, but I have ruled that out -- all my other computers and devices work fine -- I have concludede that there is something wrong with my laptop.  This morning I remembered that I had a wireless-N usb adapter in a drawer, so pulled it, plugged it in and had immediate and fast interet connectivity, while the connection on my Ultimate-N 6300 is out.  The problem with the Ultimate-N is that it is intermittent -- sometimes will not work at all, sometimes works for a little while, sometimes comes and goes within a matter of a few minutes.  I have tried reinstalling the drivers and such with no luck.  The Lenovo tech said he could not tell for sure and I would just have to send the machine in.  Is there anything I can do to determine 'for sure' if this is indeed a hardware problem related to the card?
    Thanks!

    Hi couver,
Try this, launch ThinkVantage Power Manager -> Switch to Advanced mode -> Click Advanced Settings -> Scroll down and set "Maximum Performance" in "Wireless adapter settings" -> Press OK then exit. See this:- http://img824.imageshack.us/slideshow/webplayer.php?id=lenovo1.png
Further, go to the device manager, select your wifi card -> go to Properties -> and put "Transmit Power" to maximum, and "Roaming Aggressiveness" to "Highest". See this:- http://i52.tinypic.com/w02v0l.jpg
Let us know if this helps.

  • Is overclocking a video card bad?

First post, so please be gentle!
I will be getting a new GTX 570 (when I upgrade to i7 2600K) but am a little confused as I've read so much on the different branded cards/models available (e.g. reference vs non-reference, etc).  I've read that it's best NOT to over-clock the card - in much the same way that it's best NOT to over-clock the CPU.  However, there are many 570 cards available that are factory overclocked by as little as just 10MHz from the reference speed.  I can understand that this deviates slightly from the reference, but in the real world would I be fairly safe to purchase a card such as this for basic home video-editing purposes (I don't do gaming)?  I just need to put my mind at rest, before deciding which specific brand / model to get, as there are soooo many out there.  Any advice on what other things to look out for in a card would be useful too - HDMI vs mini-HDMI?; etc.
    Thanks in advance.

Clock speed of the GPU is almost irrelevant, since even with hardware MPE the GPU is so much faster than other components in the system, that its utilization is far less than 100% and with an i7-2600K, even heavily overclocked, it is likely never to attain more than 50% utilization. What you should look for is cooling capacity, price and warranty period. If you doubt between for instance the 560, 570 and 580, then number of cores has a much bigger impact than clock speed.

  • SCJP prep help -- bitwise bad boys?

    Hi,
I'm studying for SCJP so obviously one of the details I have to brush up on are the oft-unused bitwise operators: & | ^ ~
I'm wondering if there are any mental techniques to using these in your head. Instead of literally writing out the number in binary, performing the comparison, and then re-converting back to decimal.
Similar to how in grade school we learn that you can take a shortcut of multiplying two long numbers:
    34563
    x 24
    and do these steps:
    3 * 4 = 12, carry the 1
    6 * 4 = 24, add the 1 is 25, carry the 2
    5 * 4 = 20, add the 2 is 22, carry the 2
    4 * 4 = 16, add the 2 is 18, carry the 1
    3 * 4 = 12, add the 1, it all equals 138252
    next line
then pad a zero on the right
    3 * 2 = 6
    6 * 2 = 12, carry the 1
    5 * 2 = 10, add the 1 is 11, carry the 1
    4 * 2 = 8, add the 1 is 9
    3 * 2 = 6, it all equals 691260
    altogether the answer is 691260 + 138252 = 829512
In other words, while it's not feasible to add 34563 to itself 24 times (23 actually), there is a trick to figuring it out. Is there something like that for bitwise operators?
    Thanks.

Thanks -- I finally collated some good tips a few days after I posted that here, with some help from local LUGgers. I'll post them here for the archives:
Would you mind posting a summary of the helpful tips, tricks, and
shortcuts sent your way? I'm rather interested in understanding this
stuff a little better myself.Sure. In fact, they say you really know something well when you can
explain it to someone else, and this gives anyone a chance to correct me
if I'm wrong in what I think I know. Here's some of the things I
learned, combined with what I had already learned from my book (please
do correct me if I'm wrong):
    1. The unary bitwise NOT operator (~) has a shortcut, but one which
only works when two's complement is in effect. On systems in which
one's complement is in effect, it doesn't work. The shortcut is that
    any number n has a bitwise NOT of -n - 1. So
    ~5 == -6
    ~-12 == 11
Because I'm fortunate enough to be working in Java where you're writing
for only one platform (the JVM, which has a spec), I don't have to worry
about exceptions to this for the test.
    2. Other than the NOT operator, the bitwise operators are binary
operators, working on pairs of numbers. The bitwise AND operator
returns a 1 for each pair of bits that are both 1.
    So in the case of
    11001 & 10011
the result is 10001 (because only the first and last digits are both 1).
The bitwise OR (|) operator returns a 1 for situations in which either
pair of bits has a 1.
    So in the case of
    11001 | 10011
the result is 11011 (because the only place in both numbers where there
is no 1 is the third digit).
The bitwise XOR (^) operator returns a 1 for situations in which either
pair of bits, but not both, has a 1 (hence the name "exclusive OR", or XOR).
    So in the case of
    11001 ^ 10011
the result is 01010 (because in the first, third, and fifth digits,
either both numbers are 0 or 1).
The short circuit operators AND (&&) and OR (||) work just like their
regular counterparts except they stop evaluating once they "know" the
result (AND stops evaluating if the first operand is false, and OR stops
evaluating if the first operand is true).
    3. So my original question, "does anyone know any mental shortcuts for
working with bitwise operators", should have been phrased as "does
anyone know any mental shortcuts for converting decimal numbers to
binary". The answer, which a couple of people provided, was that it's
much easier to convert to binary (even if only in your head) when you
are working from octal or hexadecimal, and that it's not too difficult
to convert from decimal to octal or hexadecimal.
    Several ways were suggested:
    a) Convert the number to hex, then do the comparison a byte at a time in
    your head using a table:
    & 0x01 0x02 ... 0xff
    0x01 0x01 0x00 0x01
    0x02 0x00 0x02 0x02
    0xff 0x01 0x02 0xff
    b) Convert the number to octal using a simple recursive divide-by-eight
    solution:
divide the number by eight, store the remainder as the low bit depth
(rightmost number), then repeat the process with the quotient.
    123 / 8 = 15 remainder 3 -- 3 is rightmost digit (3)
    15 / 8 = 1 remainder 7 -- 7 is next to 3 (73)
    we don't divide 1 by 8 -- 1 is next to 7 (173)
so 123 in octal is 0173
From octal it's much easier to see the binary form of the number:
    1 7 3
    001 111 011
And from binary it's much easier to do a bitwise calculation.
    c) Another way to convert to binary is to simply keep dividing by two
and assigning 1 if there's a remainder and 0 if there isn't, then read
in reverse to get the binary number:
    <quote>
If a number is even, dividing it by 2 will have 0 remainder.
If it is odd, dividing it by 2 will have a 1 remainder. Dividing
by 2 is so easy that I, at least, can just write down a column of
successive halvings, along with 1s and 0s for their oddness.
    459 1
    229 1
    114 0
    57 1
    28 0
    14 0
    7 1
    3 1
    1 1
Reading from bottom to top, we again get 111001011. In this
presentation you stop when the quotient is 1, since you've already
written down the remainder that you'd get by dividing 1 by 2 when
you write down the oddness. Remainder when dividing by 2 is easier
    than quotient.
    </quote>
    d) A final useful tip mentioned: as long as x is not zero,
    x & -x
will always evaluate to a power of two, which means only one bit is set
in the number (the least significant of the bits of x that were 1s).
    4. And everyone agreed that it's foolish to do these kinds of
computations in your head when there's no good reason not to use a
computer to do it. My personal preference is to use Python since the
interactive interpreter works just like a calculator, though any
scripting language should probably be able to handle the calculations.
    (Here's a quick sample:)

  • Solution I found, But iPhone say, "HA, HA, NO can use solution Bad boy!?"

    Hello all,
I have had a couple of accidents with my iPhone 4 - mostly with it slipping out of my hand while rushing to get it out of my pants pocket to answer a call. Once I tried to block the fall with my boot, but unfortunately this backfired on me and I ended up kicking it rather hard against the wall. Fortunately, other than some fine hear line cracks in the back glass panel, wall paint and shoe polish marks on the outer bezel, it still works fine.
I subsequently decided it be wise to look at some practical solutions to help me extend the usability and prolong the life-cycle of my iPhone 4 so I went about evaluating all the facts and concluded that since the phone is most vulnerable when I rush to get it out of my pants pocket (it's primary residence) to answer a call in time, plus the fact that I hate holding any phone against my noggin to have a phone conversation, plus the fact that I cannot stand having anything in my ear for anything longer than 15 minutes, plus the fact that I dislike cables attached to me, oh yes, and the proximity range issue thing... Well, after all these considerations, I concluded that the most practical solution for my needs would be to go out and buy a decent Bluetooth ear-piece, which I did.
I paired my new ear-piece with iPhone 4 -- all good. I can use voice dialing to place a call -- all good. I can keep my ear-piece in my shirt pocket and yank it out only when I need it to answer a call -- NOT good. For some really stupid reason that I fail to understand, iPhone 4 will automatically decrease the ringer volume and still indicate full volume in settings when one has a Bluetooth ear-piece connected!!?? And there is no setting to disable this! So now I cannot hear the phone ring most of the time. Such a little limitation, but such a huge inconvenience to me. Or, is there something I have overlooked?

Thanks, I know it rings in the ear-piece. I don't want to wear the ear-piece all day just to know the phone rings. My gripe is that full volume should not be indicated in settings when my iPhone decided for me to reduce my ringer volume with the ear-piece connected. It must be my choice for my needs to turn the volume back up so I can hear the phone ring without having to wear the ear-piece.

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

  • N900 Software support is shockingly bad!!!

Nokia. Why release a phone with no/very little software support? It's been about 4 months since the release and it's still not much better!!!
I replaced my Iphone with the N900 because it's meant to be an Iphone beater, but the truth is looking sadly the opposite.
Nokia Map loader is not working and the PC Suite has bugs and it's complicated having to switch between PC Suite mode and Mass Storage mode. What's happened to my free Navigation?
Come on Nokia this is embarrasing, I absolutely love this phone and I want to recommed it to my friends, but with the software situation that's not a possibility.

    N900 Personal Review
Hi all, I would like to make some comments about the New Nokia N900.
    Shortly the phone SUCKS!
I have been a Nokia user for about 10 years, and for the past 3 I have been using the NSeries, I started 3 years ago with the N95, then moved’ on to the N96 an now as you can see I have had the chance to use the N900 even though my original plan was the N97. The reason for this is that I contacted my provider (T-Mobile UK) as I was due an upgrade, and was told that they didn’t do this handset directly, but I could get this phone if I did the upgrade though Carphone Warehouse (Don’t even get me started on them) any way I contacted Carphone Warehouse and told them that I was due an upgrade and wanted the N97, the idiot on the phone started telling me that the N900 was much better and that it was faster and all. I told him I would have a look into it my self, at least to read some comparisons online. After having read the comparison on several sites, on “paper” the N900 sounded much better, faster processor (N97 is about 400Mhz, N900 is about 600Mhz), more RAM, the use of a Linux based OS and so on, sounded great, I accepted the upgrade with 14 days exchange if not happy.
Well I have used the phone for about 3 days, and let me tell you what I think…
The device is not as fast as people say, you would not think that there is about 200Mhz speed difference between them and that the N900 has double of the RAM then the N97. Yes it does allow you to open several tasks at once, but the CPU drain off more demanding applications is definitely noticeable, for example when running a YouTube page in the background with a video playing and opening other apps, the music temporarily stops just like the N95/N96 did/do.
The fact that it’s a new mobile technology makes it also not very popular right now and there is lack of application unlike the Symbian OS used by the N97, even Nokia them self are not up to speed, the OVI map on the N900 is version 1 point something and is really useless, unlike version 3.03 (3.04 BETA out too) of the N97 (don’t forget that I am using the N97 as a Symbian comparison).
The firmware upgrade is very complex for general users, this includes having to use a Flashing Tool and command lines, I had some issues at the beginning and I am an IT technician. The NSU (Nokia Software Update) didn’t detect the new version available even though the phone was delivered with version 1.x and the version available was 3.2x.
Even the phone “Hard Reset” is complicated, once again you have to use the Flashing Tool and download an other file called EMMC that should technically erase the 32GB memory, but be were, after having used this file my contact were still there and some other information were there too such as my OVI e-mail account and my SKYPE account details, there was also a file from the sketch software that had not been deleted and had to do so manually.
Talking about SKYPE, many sites when comparing N97 to N900 state that the N900 has SKYPE and some other software unlike the N97, well I use to use SKYPE on the N95, it may not be inbuilt but no one says you can’t download it, I use to have SKYPE Lite with many more features then the “messaging” SKYPE inbuilt in the N900. I also use to have 3 different versions of Opera, Windows Live messenger, the IPlayer application, an application provided by SKY TV to control TV listing and Remote Recording, Google Map, Google YouTube application and much, much more, most probably you wont find half of those for the N900, but you don’t see anyone stating that anywhere.
The N900 also lack the option to create folder to organize your applications, any application is “plonked” with the rest in a random order and there is nothing you can do about it, apart from creating a short-cut on one of the 4 useless screens and try to organize it that way.
It also seem to lack the use of the SIM contact option, all you can do is copy from the SIM but not use the SIM storage, now my SIM allows me to store 200 contacts, this would A) save memory on the phone, and B) be used as a back-up of the numbers. I normally use it as B, I back-up the numbers on the SIM (apart from the PC) because the SIM does not die as easy as the phone, lets say (and this has happened to me before with the N96) that the phone drops in the bath, the phone would most probably short and die, but if you had the numbers on the SIM you can move to a back-up phone no problem, same as if you drop the phone and it brakes.
An other issues I had with the N900 is that when you create short-cuts on one of the 4 desktop, you cant align the items, so you may have one up, one down and so on, you would think that they would have a snap to grid or something, but no such thing.
The battery is worse then any phone I have seen, I have lost a “line” while playing only 2 YouTube videos over 3G network hardly anything else running, now the videos were about 3 to 5 minutes each so lets say I lost a battery “line” in 10 minutes, I guess with-in 1 hour your battery would be flat.
The battery charger is not a standard Nokia one (pin) but it uses the same socked of the USB cable, maybe they run out of money while designing, who knows, the only good thing about the charging is that you can charge it while connecting to the PC via USB.
The keyboard misses the mouse pad that we have on the N97, and even thought the device supports on-screen keyboard too, I have noticed that many of the application only support the normal slide-out keyboard, application such as the OVI map (while using the search address option).
The messaging options are very limited too, IM and SMS is all included in an option called conversations located in the main menu, as far as I have seen you are also not able to select multi items when trying to delete them, and this does not only happened in the “conversations” section, I had to delete all the inbuilt songs 1 by 1 and several other files 1 by 1.
The camera options are very limited too, and the picture quality is very poor as far as I can see, I have taken better pictures with the N95 2 years ago.
There seem to also be a limitation when trying to edit website short-cuts name on the desktop, the name is basically what ever the site owners use as a title for the site, for example YouTube uses “YouTube – Broadcast Yourself” and that’s what the phone seems to use as a desktop short-cut title.
The 3G seem to also run slower on this device, web-page loading time between this phone and the N95 seems to be slower more then faster.
And this is what I have discovered in 2 and a half days of using the phone, I don’t even want to imagine how dissatisfied I would have to be if I had to keep this phone for 12/18/24 months, luckily I have the 14 days to exchange and will contact Carphone Warehouse in the morning to arrange an exchange for the N97, I have already taken my SIM card out and placed it in a spare N95 I have at home, that’s how quick I want to get away from the device.
My general advice would be to stay away from this phone and technology at least for now, and not to always believe what is stated by device specs on “paper” as sometimes it’s not all as expected.
This phone reminds me of a scene from the film “Bad Boys 2” when Will Smith is driving the black Porsche with Martin Lawrence.
Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence): You mean, y'all paid, what, $80,000 for this car and you ain't got no damn cup holder?!
Mike Lowrey (Will Smith): It's $105,000 and this happens to be one of the fastest production cars on the planet. Zero to sixty in four seconds, sweetie. Limited edition.
Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence): You damn right it's limited! No cup holder, no back seat. Just a shiny **bleep** with two chairs in it. I guess we the balls just draggin' the **bleep** along.

  • New AGP graphics card

I have the original AGP 2x card that came with my machine, the Rage 128 Pro with a mighty 16MB of VRAM. I want to upgrade this bad boy, but also would like to spend under $100. I've read on these forums about how certain PC graphics cards do not work with Macs unless they are "flashed." The following is a local store that has some great prices (in my opinion) on AGP cards, would one of these work in my machine without "flashing" or whatever? And what is this flashing?
The site, click on video cards: http://www.enuinc.com/
    Thanks

    Hi-
To choose a card, you will need to find a 2x capable AGP Mac card, or, have a 2x capable AGP PC version card flashed- have the ROM re programmed with code for a Mac. Some cards even require physical alteration-more difficult.
You can find Radeon 9000 mac Pro cards on eBay for under $100. They are much better than the origional Rage.
If you want to try for more power on a budget, you will have to go the flashing route.
Got to strangedogs.com, and register an account. You can then view the forums to learn all you need to know, and maybe also pick up a card.

  • New Wifi NIC card not supported

So I have a DV4 4141us and I wanted to upgrade the wifi card to something that supports AC. So I bought an Intel AC wifi card that people said gave them good speeds. It was cheap and that makes me happy. I go to install it and Im getting an error 702. Im thinking maybe a BIOS update will help me out but all the changelog says about that is better memory management. Im wanting to know if there is a way I can install this bad boy wifi card. I would really hate to think Im screwed out of 802.11AC support. The model of the NIC is 7260HMW. Thanks.

Some people have had success with that module on some notebooks and many have not.
Did you install the driver from Intel?
Check the BIOS mod websites.  You may be able to get a modified BIOS that suports the WIFIO module if you are willing to forgo your notebook's warranty to try to use the WIFI module.
Don't forget that once you go down the modified BIOS route you are on your own.  You will have accepted complete responsibility for possibly making a brick out of your notebook by installing and using modified firmware.

  • Any problem with AMD Radeon or FirePro graphic cards?

    Hi.
I know that Adobe recommend Nvidia cards for SpeedGrade, but I ask to owners of AMD cards if they have found any problems with AMD cards: bad performance, not realtime with relatively few layers, etc, etc
    Which is your experience?
    Thanks.

FWIW: I'm using a AMD Radeon HD 6750M (1GB RAM) on my Mac Book Pro. So far it performs fine, in some cases it even feels faster than the Quadro 4000 in my Mac Pro, but I think that has more to do with the type of projects. Mostly doing DSLR on the MBP and R3D on the Mac Pro.
