Authentication on a Wireless Network

Hi all,
I have 2 standalone networks to be deployed in a hotel area on ground and 20th floor. We have a 5M internet link provided by the ISP for the users. I will be usingAIR-WLC4402-12-K9 with AIR-LAP1142N-N-K9 for providing wireless connectivity.
I need to provide some kind of authentication for the users at the site.
1) Can we have a common shared key for user authentication? Like WPA1 or WPA2? How will the keys be generated and how will the WLCs authorize the generated keys? can it act like a local ACS server?
My understanding is User tries to associate with a SSID---> WLC asks for a key--> User enters the password (common to all)-->Key is generated --> User gets IP to connect to the network
Please let me know if my understanding is correct
As It is not possible to give username and pwds to all the users, I  would like to know how this authentication is best implemented?
Appreciate your help!!
Cheers

The title of your post cites authentication, yet WPA keys have nothing to do with authentication, they have to do with encryption and key management.
In most public places like what you're describing where there's a wireless LAN controller, web authentication is used.  Guest accounts can be created (that expire or don't expire) and guest users log into a page with the guest user account name and password.  The authentication can be done on the controller or it can go to an external authentication server.  There's a great doc about it:

  • Prevent Wireless 802.1x clients connecting to all Wireless Networks

    Hi,
I would like to have user based certificate authentication for my wireless networks.  We have a wireless network for corporate laptops and one for mobile devices like iPads/Phones.  I don't want corporate devices to be able to connect to the mobile wireless network and vice versa.
The problem I'm facing is once I implement user based certificate authentication, both iPads and corporate laptops can connect to both mobile and corporate wireless networks.  Is there a way to restrict mobile devices from connecting to corporate wireless networks and corporate laptops from connecting to mobile device wireless networks?
    Thanks

What you would do is for the domain machines use machine authentication and the mobile either PEAP or EAP-TLS. The domain machines can also use ESP-TLS if you want. Then you would have two policies on ACS and you would use the called station id attribute to distinguish between the SSID's. Your AD group would need to be different. That is why machine authentication can use the computer group and the mobile can use PEAP or EAP-TLS. If your ssid was Domain and Mobile, then you would add to your policy a called-station-id with a value of *.Domain for the domain computers and *.Mobile for mobile devices.

  • Two factor authentication in wireless network by one-time password

is this possible? What required for this scenario?

    Hello, thanks for the answer.
I will try to tell in more detail that we want.
We already have the following equipment:
Cisco WLC 5508 and some ap's
    Cisco ACS
    Microsoft AD Server
Process of authentication of the user in a wireless network is represented to me following:
at first the user enters the registration data, then to him through SMS the one-time password comes.
Thus we don't want to use digital certificates.
    Whether such scheme is possible?

  • Machine authentication on WPA2 PEAP-MSCHAPv2 wireless network

Is there anyway to setup machine authentication on Leopard or Snow Leopard associating the device to a WPA2 Enterprise wireless network using PEAP with MSCHAPv2

In Snow Leopard open Network preferences and select the Airport port then click on the Advanced button. Click on the 802.1X tab where you should find what you want.

  • Wireless authentication to a windows network

IF this is the wrong group please let me know and I will re-post...
I am trying to solve some problems authenticating to a windows network using a airport card....
I keep getting a non-trusted certificate message after/during the 802.x authentication box..We are not using certificates, at least that is what the admin tells me...so I have logged in as root, opened keychain and set the certifcates in question to trust always for all settings...I log out and then relogin as a normal network account and I still get the message which I can click continue and now I have access..
the other problem is that my home folder will not mount...I have to mount it manually through the finder..I am assuming this is because the airport network services are not running until I authenticate locally with a cached password....Is there a way to have the login window authenticate through airport so I can have my home directory mount automatically...
    thanks for your help...

unfortunately there are severla problems with the solution and it really doesn't address the issue. I can't mount the volume on the dock as it won't mount, probably because it is the server itself that has been mounted, not the shared home folder. Also it might create a conflict by having an alias to the home folder that would conflict with the auto mounted home folder when I use the ethernet as a connection source. What I have is a multi-purpose machine.
    1) I use a hardwired connect at my desk...
    2) If I need to go somewhere that a port in the wall is not active, I can then use a wirless connection which allows me access to everything I need....
What I need to do is get this working so that the rest of the area can use it as well....
So the question still remains: Does the wireless authentication not mount the home directory because it is not tied into the login window. For example, in a hardwired case I login to the system and this authenticates me and mounts my home folder. When I unplug the ethernet cable and turn on ariport and log off I login to the login window but the 802.x box comes up and asks for my password....which then brings up a not trusted certificate. Which I have tried everyhting I know to make this accepted by the system, including logging as root and going into keychain and setting it to be trusted. This DOES not work. I still get the untrusted certifcate message and the home directory does not mount. So what I need is someone who is authenticating to a windows network using wireless. I have followed all the 802.x suggestions which include using only peap to authenticate through.
I hope someone can tell me how to stop the untrusted certificate error and how to mount the home directories. It would seem that there should be some type of setting to make airport startup prior to the login window or be hooked into the login window and pas that through to the wireless authentication. This is beyond my experience as you can see...
    thanks

  • Machine only wireless network authentication.

Our network services group is switching our wireless network to machine only authentication for improved security.  Does anyone know how to configure OS X Lion to enable machine only authentication?  I had seen an earlier post where someone suggested using "host/<machine name>.<AD Domain name>" however, I don't know what to use for the password.

    Hi,
Did you use wireless network card to connect the router on your desktop?
For the issue, we need to perform the following steps to narrow down this issue.
Firstly, we need to confirm if the issue is related to your router.
Please use other device to test your router. e.g. your mobile phone.
If your router connectivity is ok, please use the following command to delete your wireless profile on your laptop, then re-connect to your wireless router.
    1.Press Win+x, and click Command Prompt(admin)
    2.Type "netsh wlan show profiles"
3.Type "netsh wlan delete profile name="WirelessProfileName"
For example, if I wanted to delete my listed Test-Router (name) wireless network profile, I would type the command below exactly.
    netsh wlan delete profile name="Test-Router"
    4. When finished, you can close the command prompt if you like.

  • Time Capsule in Standalone Mode with Existing Wireless Network

    Hi there,
I hope someone can help. I'm not quite sure where to post this question, so I hope I am in the right place. Ive found various posts on this matter but just would like some assistance with my personal set up.
I have a new retina MacBook Pro arriving soon which will be running Mountain Lion. I've also just purchased a current model Time Capsule for the purpose of wireless backups via Time Machine and would like some advice on how to integrate it into my system.
I already have a wireless Internet connection set up and running well (through a D-link DSL-2740R router) so I don't want to mess around with that (for various reasons it took a long while to set up). I'm therefore looking at running the Time Capsule in a standalone way but I am guessing in doing so it will create a second wifi network (although it will not be connected to the Internet). I appreciate I cannot connect to two wireless networks at once but whilst in the local Apple store recently, one of the assistants mentioned that this would not be a problem for Mountain Lion with regard to Time Machine backups and that I would not have to use bridge mode or anything on the Time Capsule. However I unfortunately had to leave the store before I could find out how to go about setting this up.
I would therefore be grateful if anyone could help with how to set the Time Capsule up in Mountain Lion as mentioned above so that I can get it up and running when my Macbook Pro turns up.
Also, once set up, I would like to use the USB port on the Time Capsule to attach a powered hub to connect multiple USB hard drives. Could someone please confirm that this will work in whatever manner I have to set the Time Capsule up and also whether Time Machine can back these drives up to the Time Capsule as well.
I would say that networks etc. are not my strong point so would be grateful for answers aimed at novice (or lower!) level of technical experience.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Steve Harvey

This is really the same option as bridging the TC..
You cannot use the TC as a router in the UK.. well mostly not, because all your ISP use PPPoA authentication.. there are some who have recognised the error of following BT blindly and now also use PPPoE. But you cannot authenticate the TC to the modem using pppoa protocol. So there is no way the TC can be in any mode but bridge..
Don't worry if the above didn't make a lot of sense.
When you bridge the TC.. it will act as a switch and WAP, plus hard disk to network.
The wireless can indeed be left on.. even on both devices.. that isn't actually a problem.. although I prefer to set one or both routers to a fix wireless channel.
You can also turn off the dlink wireless but I think you will find the dlink wireless rather better than the TC.
For 2.4ghz there are only 3 non-overlapping channels, 1, 6, 11 ( although you can also use 13 in UK).
The TC is only N lite on 2.4ghz ie max speed is 150mbps.. It will only need one channel.
The Dlink is full N ie 300 or 270mbps and to do this requires 2 channels.. that means you need to be very specifc.. and might be better infact setting the dlink to also only use 1 channel.. ie 20mhz only not 40mhz.
Again if you are not following don't worry.. I will be specific.
Set the dlink wireless to channel 1.. and set it to 20mhz only. The dlink should still have better range than the TC..
Place the TC in a place as far away as you can get.. next room or wireless dead spot would be excellent.. use ethernet or EOP adapters.
    Bridge the TC.
Set the TC to channel 11 or 13 as you prefer..
Give it the same wireless name.. (SSID to everyone else) as the Dlink.
Same security setting WPA2 AES on the dlink WPA2 Personal on the TC.
    Same passkey.
You now have a roaming system.
ie the laptop should connect to the strongest signal.. just like a mobile phone does as you travel.
The 5ghz will also be available to your computer if the signal is good enough.. range is very poor though.
I do recommend you run 5.6 utility.. this is tricky as it won't install on mountain Lion.
You need to download the utility.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    Download and install unpkg
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/16357/unpkg
Open the 5.6 dmg.. and drag the pkg over a running unpkg.. it will then load the files into a new directory on the desktop.. just drag the airportutility5.6 to your utilites directory.
v6.1 utility in Lion and Mountain Lion is a toy version.

  • Time Capsule to join existing wireless network

    Hi All,
I have a question, as despite experimenting and reading all I can find on the subject I am no closer to a definite answer.
I have the old 500gb Time Capsule (802.11n non-simultanious version).
I presently have a BT HomeHub 2.0 as my wifi router downstairs, and use a Linksys WRT54GS to connect to the network SSID provided by the HomeHub. All my desktop machines, etc are then connected into the 10/100 switch in the WRT54GS, giving them access to the WiFi network.
Ideally I wanted to replace the WRT54GS with my Time Capsule, so that my desktop machines upstairs plug into the 10/100/1000 ethernet ports on the Time Capsule, which is then in-turn connected wirelessly to the BT HomeHub downstairs for Internet access. (The benefit of this being increased speed thanks to the 802.11n technology in the HomeHub and Time Capsule).
Sadly, the Time Capsule does not seem to like connecting to the HomeHub's SSID, each time giving me the flashing amber light. Normally, I would simply re-configure the network so the BT HomeHub connects to an SSID provided by the Time Capsule, but my version of the HomeHub is not capable of doing this, or using a WDS type setup.
WiFi signal strength is good where the Time Capsule is located, the network is using WPA/WPA2 mixed authentication, and other devices can connect to the SSID.
Any help on this is much appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Welcome to the discussions!
When the Time Capsule "joins" a wireless network, (which is the only way that it could connect to the HomeHub network unless you use ethernet) the ethernet ports on the device are not active. When you configure the TC to "join", it really takes on the function of a wireless backup device, nothing more.
The Time Capsule cannot be configured for a WDS type arrangement with your HomeHub because it is not compatible.
If you want to connect the Time Capsule to the HomeHub and have the Time Capsule create a wireless network, then you must use an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on your HomeHub to the WAN port on the Time Capsule and configure the TC to act as a "bridge".
If you are unable to run an ethernet cable, the next option would be to use ethernet powerline adapters to use the wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal.

  • Upgraded 4s to iOS8 and can't connect to certain wireless networks anymore

I have an iPhone 4s that I updated to iOS 8.  Prior to update, I was using iOS 7 (whatever the latest iteration was), and was able to connect to various wireless networks. Following the update, I am no longer able to connect to the wireless network at my place of work.  It tries to connect, does so briefly, and give me an authentication request (screenshot attached). Blank username/passwords don't work, neither does the network name/password combo.  Choosing cancel will revert the connection back to 3G.
To try and fix the problem, I have "forgotten" the connection, re-started the phone, and neither has worked I have reset my network connections, and it worked immediately after the reset.  The phone was inactive for a while, and upon unlocking, it had reverted to 3G.  When I tried to re-connect, it gave the same errors already stated.
I no longer have a back-up from before the upgrade, so I can't go back to 7.  My wireless connection on my home network is fine.  Nothing has changed with the work wireless since it was working with my iOS 7. It uses a WPA-Personal security, and there are several repeaters for the signal throughout the building.
What is going on and how can I fix it?

  • [Solved]Unable to connect to wireless network using networkmanager

I have just recently reinstalled Arch Linux so I could try out Gnome 3. I am using Slim for a display manager and as I said before Gnome 3 for the window manager. All of the packages are the latest versions.
    slim 1.3.4-2
    gnome-session 3.4.2-3
    consolekit 0.4.6-4
    networkmanager 0.9.4.0-6
    network-manager-applet 0.9.4.1-1
My current issue is that when i click on the network manager applet then click on a network to connect to it nothing happens. It doesn't matter if the network is secure or not. I have followed the instructions on the wiki for slim, gnome, and networkmanager. I have been reading the forums and trying out other people's solutions. So far nothing is working.

  • Can't connect to wireless network but wife can...

Hi. I've just bought a Macbook pro. I am trying to connect it to a wireless network. The macbook finds the network (and others), but after I give the correct password it says 'authentication failed'. The weird thing (to me) is that my wife can connect to the same network with her macbook with no problems. These are my Airport details (no working connection)

We are both running 10.6.2 with all the latest sofwtware updates. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be up? The router is a Netgear DG834Gv5, again with the latest firmware. Security is WPA2.
    Thanks in advance,
    wrathkeg

    Two things I'd check first:
1 - in your router, do you have mac address filtering turned on? If so, add the mac address (Airport id) of your MacBookPro to the 'Wireless Station Access List' in your router. You can find your Airport id under *System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced > Ethernet* .
2 - in your MacBookPro, turn Airport OFF. Then go into *System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced.* In the Preferred Networks box, delete the wireless network you are having trouble authenticating with. Click OK, then Apply. Exit System Prefs. Then turn Airport ON. Find the network; re-enter your password. See if that fixes things.

  • Can´t connect to wireless network | unable to proceed installation

    Hello everybody!
After using Ubuntu for about two years I´d like to use another Linux distro which suits my requirements better and ArchLinux seems to be the best solution for me. Anyway I got some trouble with the installation.
I´m using the beginners guide from the wiki and this video as a reference while installing but I got stuck at the point when setting up the wireless network.
    wpa_supplicant -Dwext -ieth1 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf & >/dev/null
    ... outputs...
eth1: WPA: Invalid EAPOL-Key MIC when using TPTK - ignoring TPTK
eth1: WPA: Could not verify EAPOL-Key MIC - dropping packet
(this is the same error message btw)
It shows up this message every two seconds without stopping. The only thing I can then is shutting down my laptop and start from the beginning.
I also tried using netcfg but without real success. There it doesn´t complain but I don´t got a working connection either.
Another odd thing is that if I type
    /arch/setup
to begin the actual installation it says "no such file or directory". Any ideas what needs to be configured before or what I am doing wrong?
    Any help is appreciated!

    maddin wrote:
Ok, I followed the beginners guide now bit by bit. After entering the command
    wifi-menu eth1
I can select my network and enter the key which then displays this message:
nl80211: Driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands
Failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open: No such file or directory
I tried to install the firmware as the wiki suggests it but I didn´t succeed in using pacman as it doesn´t seem to find the required package (ipw2200-fw).
So how do I get this package then?
Dude. Use you wlan interface not the ethernet one.
    Eg: wifi-menu wlan0

  • Yoga 13 Wireless network authentication problem

I recently bought Yoga 13 and it is a wonderful machine, but since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, I can't connect to my university Wi-Fi.
Recommended authentication method for the university's Wi-Fi is WPA-enterprise/TKIP and it's using personal certificates. Before the Windows update, there was the WPA-enterprise/TKIP option in Wireless Network settings, but now it's gone and it only supports WPA2-personal and WPA2-enterprise with both using AES encryption. I thought, that this is driver problem so I tried both drivers available on Lenovo Support site (I couldn't find this driver anywhere else), but that didn't work.
My last resort would be contacting ma faculty's IT technician, but he would charge me for setting my Wi-Fi, and I don't want to pay for something, which was working few days ago and which wasn't my fault that stopped working (stupid authentication method for university Wi-Fi constantly causing problems is different chapter entirely...)
    Thanks for any advice.

It's not a new problem, it's a known problem that no one cares to fix and they continue to sell non-working products. I have a Yoga purchased in Feb 2014, it CAME WITH WINDOWS 8.1 INSTALLED! I invested in a brand new computer to keep my business operating smoothly, only to find out I just dumped a ton of money into the worst peice of junk I've ever owned. The intel wireless adapter is "not compatable"?!? Lenovo had me reinstall over the phone, it worked for 8 hours. Next day- no internet. I took it to the point of sale, they went to the Intel website and downloaded the driver again. That worked for another 12 hours. Every time I move locations and have a new access point, the internet doesn't work. So far the only "solution" offered is for me to send in this brand new business investment to be repaired, which could take 3 weeks. Sure, I'll close up shop so ya'll can work on a POS that was sold with faulty/ incompatible/ not yet compatible drivers (I really don't care what the issue is, only that is is a KNOWN ISSUE that Lenovo acts all surprised about). Every service person I've talked to doesn't have a clue what is going on, yet I can go online and find pages and pages of this very same (unresolved) issue!
-different router and access point does not work
-factory reset does not work, you're just reinstalling the same "incompatible" driver (that mine came with, I did not "upgrade" to anything)
-BRAND NEW, internet has  been an issue since before any other programs were installed.
Now my pointer is missing again, so I get to waste another several hours reading through pages of similar issues to try and figure that debacle out. I miss my 15 yr old VAIO!

  • [S0LVED] Can't connect to wireless network...

I'm unable to connect to my wireless network.  I'm on a Thinkpad T41p and I installed the ipw2100 firmware for my chipset.  The wifi indicator is blinking, assumingly indicating activity.
When I try to use wifi-menu to connect to my network, it gives me a "failed to connect" error when I try to connect...But with netctl-auto enabled, it just tells me that my interface is controlled by netctl-auto and does nothing.  When I try to scan with "iw dev wlp2s2 scan | grep SSID", it shows...
command failed: Operation not suppored (-95)
When I run wpa_cli, I get the following messages over and over again...
    <3>CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
    <3>Trying to associate with e0:91:f5:dc:14:24 (SSID='MYSSIDE' freq=2452 MHz)
<3>Association request to the driver failed
    <3>CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
<3> Authentication with e0:91:f5:dc:14:24 timed out.
    <3>CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=e0:91:f5:dc:14:24 reason=3 locally_generated=1
I tried running netctl-auto switch-to on the profile, and all it showed was  "WPA association/authentication failed for interface 'wlp2s2'".
As far as I can tell, nothing else is trying to manage my network, and I can't find anything that indicates that anything's wrong in dmesg.

Did you run that command with sudo? When I try running it as a normal user I also get an error but it works if I sudoise it.

Both of those commands say that your wifi card is in a DOWN state. Try running
sudo ip link set dev wlp2s2 up
and try again to make a connection.
I've tried this a bunch of times with no results...This time after I tried it, I checked dmesg and the fatal interrupt message was there...So I'm guessing this error is in response to that command.
ipw2100: Fatal interrupt. Scheduling firmware restart.
