Authoring in iDVD?

I've created a 53 minute program in FCE which will be released for sale both in standard DVD and Blu-ray formats. Though I won't attempt authoring the Blu-ray version, is there any reason I can't use iDVD to author the DVD? I've been told that, since iDVD is essentially software intended for home use, that a DVD authored in iDVD may not be compatible with a wide enough range of DVD players to be acceptable for commercial use. For this reason it was strongly suggested that a pro-level authoring program like DVD SP be used to ensure compatibility. Can anyone shed light on this?

Good afternoon, Airwatcher.
There are at least several angles to think about when embarking on this adventure:
1)  Technical -- does your DVD duplicating company have technical submission requirements which iDVD can meet?  (these might include the specific structure of the DVD files, format of the audio, whether there is DVD-ROM content, etc.)
2)  Legal -- One Canadian user advises that Apple allows users to sell DVDs with Apple menu themes but not their audio, nor audio purchased from iTunes (see https://discussions.apple.com/message/11142006#11142006), but you may wish to verify this yourself.
3)  Features -- does iDVD allow you to make the DVD perform as you need?  "Play all" is an oft-cited limitation of iDVD, for example.  Also, some DVDs are required to be accessible to deaf viewers, and sub-titles may be desired for other viewers.  iDVD doesn't have the ability for captions (although a workaround for shorter videos is to put two copies of the video on the DVD, one with captions).
Regarding the compatibility question, perhaps your colleague is thinking about the DVD media, since there is a compatibility distinction between DVD-R and DVD+R media.  DVD-R is more compatible with older DVD players, but iDVD can burn to either media format.
If you are considering worldwide sales, it is possible your colleague was referring to the different video format (PAL) used in many countries, rather than the standard US format of NTSC.  iDVD can burn both formats, but the underlying technical differences would need separate discussion.

  • Recommendations for DVD authoring beyond iDVD

I understand that DVD Studio Pro will not be made available to users of FCP X.  I'm wondering, beyond iDVD what are some prefered alternatvies to creating DVD masters for reproduction.

This has been rock-solid for me:

  • Can idvd produce 0 reigon discs?

    hello everyone
does anyone know if when authoring with idvd you can make the disc multi reigon so that your film can be viewed on any DVD player in the world
    Thanks

    iDVD ONLY makes all-region discs.
Of course, you still have to decide between NTCS and PAL.

  • Shakey Motion Titles When Authored to DVD From FCP

Hi all, i'm having a real nightmare getting motion titles in to an FCP project then authoring to iDVD.
This evening i tried embedding some streak titles in to a piece of a footage in FCP, i use the 'Send to Motion' function. The project looks absolutly fine when played back in FCP but when i author to DVD the section with Motion in is very shakey, it's a very quick shake and it comes more across as very weak distortion. The motion titles look great but it throws out the rest of the footage.
I've tried setting the field order to none and it only slightly helps. Both of my resolutions are 720 x 576 PAL, FCP Footage is DV PAL 48 KHZ.
    Can anyone help????

    Hey David,
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't have Squeeze...
If I use the crop tool, that leaves a black border around the frame that's visible when I open the exported QT in the QT player. Was there another way of doing it?

  • Burning slide show through idvd

My friend has a slide show of several hundred slides. He made it in iphoto. He would like to burn it to a dvd that will be able to play on a tv so he can send it off to friends that were also on the trip. On the iphoto board I was told to "share" "send to idvd". Can someone give me the steps from there?
Thanks! Hope I am posting this in the right place!

    Hi jersey:
I would suggest saving the iDVD project as a disk image and burning it with the disk utility. That way when you can choose the slowest burn possible to make the best playing DVD possible.

    Use Verbatim DVD-R 4x or 8x (NOT DVD+R).

  • Burning 2 quicktime movies onto one DVD using iDVD

I wonder if you could help me.
I have 2 Quick time movies - created in FCP - one hour and 10 mins each . Is it possible to put both on one DVD using iDVD? (one is the front view and other side view of a performance).
I have version 5.0.2 iDVD and am burning on desktop G5
Both movies have chapter markers (created already in FCP)
Is it possible to do this and how do I do it using the right menu and proper theme etc- and right method of importing or loading the movies.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks

    Hello Nan,
a Single Layer DVD can hold a maximum of 120 min of video (incl. menus), so either you burn 2 SL DVDs or try to put both movies on a Double Layer DVD, provided you have a burner capable of writing DL DVD.
how do I do it using the right menu and proper theme etc- and right method of importing or loading the movies.

  • First time using iDVD for slideshow, need some guidance

I want to make a dvd that consists of 3-6 slideshows, plus "extras". Each slideshow will have 50-150 photos, but the "extras" section I want to have all the photos (including some not used in the slideshows) for a total of about 1300 photos.
    1. How do I get the photos not used in the slideshow in the "extras" section?
    2. Can I put anything in the "drop zones"? or does everything just go in the "slideshow" section?
This is the first time I have ever used iDVD and could use any help or suggestions at all.....
    thanks

Don't use over 99 images in a slideshow. You may have trouble:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302961
    1. Just create a new extras slideshow menu from the main menu by using the + button and select Add Submenu. Then go there and add slideshows the same way, only select Add Slideshow and then drag your images in; or use the Import funtion.
    2. Drop Zones are for single images/movies.
I think you need to spend some time learning how to do this, rather than guessing.

  • Sharing iPhoto slideshow using iDVD

After spending a painstaking amount of time, getting everything just perfect in my iPhoto slideshow, then using Sharing to export to iDVD, my sound and slideshow no longer line up.The slideshow now ends and the song gets cut off. I have even tried adding extra time to my slideshow and make other adjustments, but having to export takes time and I need it to end up the way I made it. This is only a 57 image, one song (4:08 min), slideshow. It goes off without a hitch in iPhoto. I have adjusted every frame for effects (no prepackaged iPhoto stuff) and duration. Any help here would be appreciated.

Have not tried to do that.
In iPhoto 6 there is a thing called Photocast. That might work. I don't use iPhoto, so I'm not much help there. You should visit the iPhoto 6 group.

  • IDVD menu buttons missing

When I open the theme menu pages neither the "Play Film" or "Scene Selection" buttons appear. Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions? I've looked through the basic help pages and David Pogues iMovie&iDVD book. Nada...
Is there any way to add these two buttons? I understand that they're supposed to be on every theme menu page.
Sorry if the answer is self evident.....
    C.

You have to add an iMovie HD movie with chapter markers to the main menu to created those. Every Theme menu is empty until you add something.

  • Making Slideshow in iDVD vs. iMovie

I have built a substantial iPhoto Library and now want to create slideshows of all my albums (and ultimately burn to DVD)
With the iDVD vers. 6 it seems I can now import the photos and arrange them, add a transitions between slides and add title & subtitles to any slide I want. But, I have tripped over something maybe someone else has figured out... When I import the photos from iPhoto, once they get to iDVD they have been assigned a TITLE which is in fact the cryptic Name of the photo (eg/ IMG000457).
This title appears on all the slides (unless I turn off the setting) - but in fact I want only the Titles for the photos that I have added real text to.
(at one time, in my playing around... I DID add photos without the Name... and the Title field in iDVD came up with "Add title" and "Add Subtitle" so I just entered the text I wanted on a few slides... the rest were left with no text)
Part 2: Also, would you know what I am giving up by skipping the iMovie step and going right to iDVD with my photos? So far, I have noticed that I can only assign 1 type of transition to my slideshow for all slides... but that's the only limitation I have found.
Part 3: Is there any advantage to sending the slides from iPhoto to iDVD versus starting iDVD and importing the Photos from the Media pane?
Thanks for any insight you can give... there's too many ways to skin this cat!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iLife 6

However I did try what you suggested, and it still imported the filename into the title when dragged from the Media Pane.
You're right! I know that didn't happen in either 6.0.0 or 6.0.1... Must have been a bug they fixed???
Like explain how you got the menus & submenus in iDVD by just dragging in folders of pictures?
Notice that this was built in 2004 in iDVD 4? Behaved differently than iDVD 6. Now you have to use the Add Submenu or Add Slideshow "under" the + in the lower-left of iDVD. Once you have those added, you populate with your images.
You mentioned you put 800 photos on this DVD... is that the max number??
That's how many images I took on the trip. Used them all.
And 95 Slideshows... on ONE DVD? Wow...
That's a typo... Should be 95%. Good catch. There were about 30 slideshows (just found my layout sheet) and several short videos from the digicam.

  • How do I fit my iMovie onto iDVD

I am trying to make a DVD. I set up the DVD ready to import my iMovie. I realized my movie is 27.8 GB because of all the clips! I compressed the movie to quick time (.mov) and it says 981.2 MB on disk. I then try putting this onto the iDVD, but it says it's still too big! And with it compressed this small form it's original size, it looks terrible. How do professional movies get burned onto a DVD and have it great quality? How can I make my movie still look good, but fit onto a 4.7 GB blank DVD+R, just like people burn real movies onto these exact same blank DVDs, but they look good?

While in iMovie HD, use the send to iDVD button. Customize the iDVD project. Keep the iMovie HD project under 2 hours unless you have anew Mac that can burn DL DVDs.
Use Verbatim DVD-R for best results.
