Authorizing a computer without upgrading to iTunes 8?

Can I authorize my computer to play purchased music without upgrading to iTunes 8?
I have a pretty old iPod 40GB (3rd gen, I believe) and after a major iPod crash after an update in 2006, I swore I'd never update again. So I've been using iTunes 4, which is what my iPod originally came with. It seems to like it. But I thought maybe it was time to update, and iTunes kept bugging me to upgrade to 8.0.1
So I downloaded it, installed it, and discovered that half my playlists and a bunch of my music was gone. Still had the files, they just weren't showing up. I tried to use my Norton GoBack to restore things to before I even thought about downloading 8.0.1, but the computer kept crashing. (Unrelated problem; piece of junk Gateway is trying to die.) I got frustrated, uninstalled 8.0.1, and went back to 4.0
But now the 3 or so songs I've purchased from iTunes (I think I got them as free downloads with a Pepsi promotion) won't play or sync to my iPod. I try to play them in iTunes and it tells me I need to authorize my computer, and the login screen pops up. So I log in, iTunes accesses the store, and then a message comes up telling me to upgrade to iTunes 8, which I REALLY don't want to do. Not being able to play 3 songs is a lot better than missing a couple hundred songs and a bunch of my playlists.
I've also tried downloading previous versions of iTunes from a link I found somewhere around these forums, but every version between 4 and the last of the 7's said it couldn't load my library because it was created in a later version of iTunes...
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you just install 6.0.5?

  • Authorize a computer without upgrading to iTunes 7

I have just moved my iTunes to a new computer - BUT I don't want to upgrade to iTunes 7 because I've heard that it can mess up my iPod mini. So I can't authorize without updating to 7.
How can I deauthorize the old PC, and authorize the new PC so that I can play my purchased songs. Would it help if I used a third party utility to back up my iPod? (Do these utilities save the files as "rights protected?"
    Any insight would be appreciated.

  • Want to download tunes from Music Store without upgrading to iTunes 7

I'd like to continue purchasing music from Music Store WITHOUT upgrading to iTunes 7, which my current version of iTunes instructs me to do before I can continue purchasing music.
Is there a way around this? In my view, if I want to purchase music from Music Store, I should be able to do so regardless of my current version of iTunes.

no one you will not get a reply and if you do you will just be told to upgrade to the latest version
you may use the feedback forms on the support page
you HAVE to update because the itunes music store is no longer compatible with old versions they are now obsolite
either upgrade to 6.05 using the link i posted above or upgrade to version 7 from the itunes download page
either that or stop using itunes to buy music

  • How to sync iPhone to new computer without erasing? (iTunes 11.0.5)

I recently purchased a new computer (MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.5) and I've tried everything to sync my iPhone (3GS) to iTunes (11.0.5)  without having to erase everything and I haven't had any success.
There must be someone out there who has been able to sync their phone to the new iTunes without having to erase all the content on their phone.
    Any help?

    Hi,
    Option 1:
If you have purchased a new Mac from an Local Apple store, I'd advise you to bring in your old computer along with your new one in, and have them assist you on transferring. (Assuming your computer doesn't not even power up)
    Option 2:
If your computer can be powered up (seeing the Apple Logo), and your hard drive is fine, then you can connect the two computers by using a Firewire cable, and then transfer the music files by drag and drop.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
    Option 3:
There are 3rd party software that you may purchase used to extract music from your iPhone, but it will have to be done at your own risk.  You may Google for extracting music from iPhone for a start.

  • Syncing to itunes from a new computer without having original itunes library

Hi there i am stuck in a tricky situation and would appreciate all the help i can get, first things first i know this is quite a frequently asked question as i have done a bit of searching on the net about it however could not not find anything that totaly matches my problem, i have recently purchased a brand new laptop which runs windows 7 compared to my old desktop which ran XP, i have tried syncing all of my iphone 4s contents onto my new laptop's itunes library including everything not just music or videos and i got the infamous pop up "The iphone is synced with another Itunes library. Do you want to erase this iphone and sync with this Itunes library" the problem is that my original itunes library does not exist no more as my desktop was completly wiped and had XP redownloaded onto it again because it had a virus, which also wiped all of my hard drive so i cant even get everything i backed up off of my phone from it, i have managed to sign in to the itunes store and allowed my laptop to work with itunes, i have also transferred my purchases from my phone to my new itunes library but this only includes my apps and obviously not my contacts and photos and everything, i still get the pop up if i go to sync my apps from my library anyway, is there any way i can delete my original itunes library without it even existing anymore so that i can just start afresh and sync everything i have on my phone now directly to my new itunes library? or do i need to purchase this iphone rip/backup/store software that everyone goes on about or something? to be honest its really annoying my now as i just want to be able to sync everything like how i used to, someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me i would be so greatfull for any good sollutions to this problem, thankyou

i also forgot to right that i really dont want to loose anything from my phone during this process, thanks

  • New used computer doesn't have iPhoto so can't transfer pictures from old computer without upgrading new one. Is there a way to download an older version of iPhoto?

I can't access any of my iPhoto pictures from my old computer since the new (used) computer I got doesn't have it. The new one is a newer version but the applestore only has the iLife 11 which would need me to upgrade. I'm not against upgrading I really just want to access these photos. I used an external harddrive to store the pictures from my old computer and am assuming that the only reason they're not showing up on the new one is because it doesn't have the applicatin (makes sense).
Is there a way to get an older version of iPhoto?
The pictures from iPhoto that are on the external harddrive will show up if i had to the application right? Will they show up on a newer version of iphoto even though they're originally from an older version?
Ahh sorry if this is confusing I'm just really frustrated at technology right now..../////

Is there a way to get an older version of iPhoto?
I suggest you don't do that. There is no guarantee it will work right with a more recent OS.
Install the correct version of iPhoto for the version of Mac OS X you are running. (Which is what?) The folks here will tell you how to get to the Library on the external drive when you provide more info about your computer.

  • Just bought macbook air; had macbook macbook with Tiger software. What is best way to upload photos to icloud on old computer without upgrading it's software? thanks.

just bought a macbook air upgrading from old macbook with Tiger software; what is best way to take photos from old backbook to icloud so I can see them or download on the new air; Have an external harddrive backup. photo library is too large to transfer directly.thanks.

Memory size has nothing to do with it. I can open my 60GB iPhoto library with only 8GB RAM. Perhaps you have an incompatible version of iPhoto under Tiger with iPhoto under ML.
As to downloading different photos from iCloud, you would do the same if you ...
    * open iPhoto under Tiger
    * dump the photos individually in to a folder on your external hard drive
    * shut down everything on the old MacBook
    * connect the external hard drive to new MacBook
    * open iPhoto on new MacBook
    * import the photos in the folder on the external hard drive directly in to the new iPhoto
IOW, you need not use iCloud (even if you could, which you cannot) to swap photos as you propose.
If you are at a loss for space on your external hard drive for whatever reason (perhaps that external hard drive is a full Time Machine partition), I recommend that you buy another external hard drive just for your photos.

  • Lost music files after upgrading to itunes 7

Hi, can someone please confirm whether or not my music files have been physically deleted from my computer after upgrading to itunes 7. Many of the songs in my playlist, including MOST of the songs purchased through itunes come up with the error that the original file can't be found. I've done searches and can't come up with the files.
I want to know if they are indeed gone.
I realize that you click "I agree" to the agreement before installing and as of now this "contract" has held up. However, we'll see how well it holds up when offered software is knowingly removing personal files. I'm sure that if someone were to write a virus that destroys your computer, if it had a warning message with an "I agree" button, it would be a very difficult contract to stand by.
To my recollection, no software in the past has physically removed personal files from your harddrive on install.
So, I don't think a precedence has been set for this kind of class action.

    and we refresh.

  • Adding another iPod - can I avoid upgrading to iTunes 6?

My wife has a Mini and we are using iTunes 4.90.17 + iPod Updater 2006-06-26 + QT 6.52 on a XP Pro/SP2 machine with NIS 2005. The Mini is set for manual control and everything works fine right now.
I just got a Nano and don't want to risk all the problems I've been reading about on this board (and elsewhere). How can I add the Nano to the system without upgrading to iTunes 6 and QT 7? Can I just plug in the Nano and have the 6-26-2005 version of iPod Updater set up the Nano, or do I need to use the Updater version that came with the Nano?
We just move music to the iPods manually and don't have time to fix any serious problems. Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    hi Sarah!
Can I just plug in the Nano and have the 6-26-2005 version of iPod Updater set up the Nano, or do I need to use the Updater version that came with the Nano?
I just checked my copy of 2005-06-26, and it doesn't contain iPod nano Software 1.0. probably best to download, install and run a copy of iPod Updater 2005-10-12 from Apple for the nano setup:

  • Upgraded to Itunes 10.6 and eventhough my computer is authorized itunes won't play any of my purchased content

I just upgraded my Itunes to 10.6. I am running  a macbook with OS 10.5.8. After upgrading I went to play some of my previously purchaed tv shows and a window came up asking my to authorize the computer to play the content which I thought was weird because the computer is already authorized. I entered my password anyway and then two windows popped up, one telling me that my computer was already authorized, and another saying my computer was NOT authorized. The controlling window seems to be the one telling me the content is not authorized, and in the window it has  a button that says open Itunes to authorize, which is again weird because Itunes is already open. After clicking th open itunes windows, waiting 5 minutes a screen comes up that says itunes could not be contacted and to make sure I have itunes 4 or greater. Again I already have itunes 10.6, then I get the grey screen where the TV show won't play.
I only have three computers authorized with my account. Actually non of my purchased shows show up on my other computers, I deleted the SC folder multiple times, etc.
    Anyone know anything about this?

    B Noir-
Thanks for the reply. What exactly does that command exactly do? Very strange what is going on. Like I said earlier my computer is authorized yet I am still getting the screen below when I try to open a TV show I've purchased. Itunes is already open so not sure why I am being asked to open it again. When I do click on open Itunes, I get another screen that says waiting for Itunes to authorize.... I wait like 5 minutes and then it says not able to contact Itunes and to make sure I have Itunes 4 or greater.
    HELP!

Allan Eckert, my guess is that my reply did not show up until the OPs posted her reply. That problem seems to have restarted this morning. See the post in the Lounge>Community Operations forum for more info.

  • I have authorized a new computer, and itunes is not registering recent purchases. How do I get my entire library back on this new computer without having to re-buy them all?

I have just gotten a new computer which runs windows.
I have authorized this computer with itunes...
But the library and playlists I had on the first computer are not showing up on this one, and when I log into the itunes store, it is not showing any of my recent purchases (like one I bought as soon as last night.)
How do I get these songs/playlists back, or do I have to actually re-buy all these songs?

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

  • Cannot upgrade to itunes 11.0.1 or 11.0.2 without deleting iTunes off windows computer! HELP!

I have a windows vista 32-bit pc. Every single time I try to upgrade to itunes 11.0.2 on restarting itunes has been deleted. Reinstalling itunes by downloading the installer through the apple website doesn't work and I have to do several system restores before I get it back. I have not been able upgrade for the past couple of months for 11.0.1 either. This is really frustrating please help!

I had the same problem today with iTunes on my Windows XP desktop.  The problem lies with Windows  which does not allow a complete removal of the old Itunes version.
Install the file from this link
    http://http://support.microsoft.com/fixit
Follow the instructions and the fixit file will totally remove all the old ITunes files from the registry.  After that is done, download the new iTunes from Apple and there will be no problem.

  • Authorizing without upgrading iTunes?

I'm trying to authorize an iBook to play my iTunes library, but it's first asking me to upgrade to iTunes 7. Problem is the iBook has an older OS and therefore can't upgrade.
Whenever I try to authorize, it asks me to upgrade. And that's the loop I'm stuck in. There must be a way to authorize with the previous version if iTunes, isn't there?
    thanks,
    steve

Problem solved by updating to iTunes 6.05. All is fine now.
