Authorizing iTune files in iDVD or iMovieHD

I am trying to insert an audio clip I purchased on iTunes into an iDVD file (in a menu) and it continually tells me it is not authorized to play on this machine. In response, I type in my apple id and password to authorize the audio file to play on this machine because I originally purchased the file on another machine and transferred it using my iPod as a hard drive to my MacBook Pro. Strange thing is, the same files that won't play for this reason on iDVD or iMovieHD also do play succesfully on iTunes on this machine. So I can't figure out why these files won't play on iDVD or iMovieHD. Any ideas?
Ryan

Hi Ryan:
Welcome to discussions!
Believe me, you are not the first to ask this very question.
So far, I am afraid the best advice that can be offered is to burn an audio CD of the itunes that you need for the project and import from that CD.

  • Using iDVD project file after deleting original iMovieHD

I've been using iMovieHD and iDVD to convert my home movies from miniDV tapes to DVDs. I've been putting two one-hour tapes together into one iMovie and then creating an iDVD project with themes, chapters, etc.
Each two-hour iMovie file takes up >20 GB. Before I burned my DVD, the iDVD project file took up only a few MB. After I burned the DVD, the file size grew to >4 GB, so I figured (erroneously, it seems) that this new file package contained all of the information needed to keep burning DVDs. Threfore, I deleted the original massive iMovie file and kept only the iDVD project file.
Now every time I try to load the iDVD file, the program lists all the missing files and, other than my themes and chapter titles, there is nothing left of the original project.
Am I missing something here? What's taking up all that space (4 GB)? Am I completely screwed? Is the only way to make new copies of my project to copy the DVD that I made?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Jay,
As John has said, you should have created a Disc Image of your DVD project before deleting the iMovie file. When working in iMovie/iDVD you must not delete ANYTHING that is in the project, not even the iMovie trash can, which often mysteriously fills up with "stuff", until you are sure you are finished editing and then have saved a Disc Image to burn further DVD's from. The files you deleted from iMovie were the reference for the file you were using in iDVD. Without that iMovie file, your iDVD project will only show what was created there, like your theme page.
Sorry that's bad news. Your options now are re-create your iMovies from your tapes, OR, rip the DVD you have back to your Mac to burn more DVD's.

  • ITunes files missing after MacBook Pro software restore

After my MacBook slowed to a crawl, I decided to restore the system software (OS and Applications) and ended up with much improved responsiveness and performance. I keep my ITunes files on an external hard drive. When the restore was completed, I set the library address to the external hard drive, and copied and pasted all my music, video and applications into Itunes window. My music came in fine, my movies are there as well, but my apps never showed, and my TV shows didn't appear either. I tried pasting 1 TV show file into ITunes TV Shows, and I tried pasting all of them. A small window came up telling me the system was "processing" the files, but they never showed up in the ITunes window. I also tried double clicking on the file name on the external hd (sometimes that imports them as well into ITunes window), but no luck there either. Any advice? Thanks.

This happened to my 2006 Macbook when the logic board was replaced under Applecare by my local service centre due to a known issue at the time (random shutdown). It didn't affect the warranty or cause me any problems so I didn't bother to go back to them although I later found out that they could and should have reset it at the time.
The only thing that might have been a problem if I had had more than one computer was that it made my iTunes account think that I had two computers authorized, i.e, a sort of "ghost" left over from the previous serial number. As you can only have five machines authorized with an account it means you have one less available to you even though you don't actually have that computer. This was not a problem to me as I didn't need five authorizations, and anyway you can go into your account once a year and reset your account. You may need to do this if you have five computers you need to play your iTunes purchases on.
Still lazy of the repair centre not to reset the serial number for you though.

  • I cannot access previously purchased iTunes files.

    Hello,
I purchased iTunes files about a year ago (that's when I began). That was my first mistake, seeing as how you can never do anything with them besides play them on iTunes. However that is not my point. After a while I stopped purchasing iTunes music, and during that time I switched banks and therefore credit cards. I had not tried to purchase any new music with the new credit card, because I didn't need any, so therefore I never thought about/saw a reason to update my account. Then my old computer pretty much died and I bought a brand new one (Gateway, it's awesome). It even has Windows Vista, yay. Now, I was a good little girl and made backup discs of all of my iTunes store music (I didn't want to waste CDs on storing music I already had on original CDs). Now, I loaded it onto the new Gateway computer, and it won't play. Now, I bet you're going to direct me to the "help" page about authorizing computers. Guess what? Been there, done that. I've been all over your help section on here (which is absolutely stupid, might I add - it would be MUCH more useful if you had things, oh I don't know, organized, or had an email address at which to contact you about this type of problem!). Nothing is helping me. I have authorized this same computer about 10 times now (no exaggeration), and my music still won't play. It pops up and says that I am not authorized to access it. Then to verify that my identity was the same when I tried a different route, it asked for the original credit card number. Well, I don't know about you, but I don't tend to keep my old credit cards just lying around! Needless to say, I don't remember it, or have any possible way to access it. So, am I going to have to go and pay again to hear the music that I ALREADY PAID FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE? If I am not, I would absolutely LOVE for someone to tell me how to listen to MY MUSIC that I HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED and NOT CHEAPLY! Thank you!
If any other information is needed please feel free to contact me at [email protected] because I really need the help on this, I really can't afford to go back and re-buy all this music (which I shouldn't have to do in the first place).

... I really can't afford to go back and re-buy all this music (which I shouldn't have to do in the first place).
No you shouldn't. Bear in mind, though, that Apple has set this up as a user-to-user board so all we can do here is try to help you figure out why the authorization procedure isn't working correctly for your new computer.
There have been a variety of issues reported with iTunes and Windows Vista, some I believe related to the authorization procedure. So the first thing I'd do is make sure you've downloaded and installed iTunes 7.1 which was just released yesterday.
That may solve your problem. If not, click on the Review Authorization Count link in the Why can't I authorize one of my computers? section of this Apple Support page and let us know how many authorizations you're using.
Be patient and we should be able to figure this out.

  • Prevent some iTunes files from being shared

I want some of iTunes files not to be shared.
    What I have tried:
    - create a playlist and in preferences instead of share entire library select everything except that playlist. Files in that playlist are accessible anyway over share.
    - exclude entire playlist, lets say Music Videos - this works, but this is not what i want to achieve.
Additionally I found that Smart Play Lists as well as Playlists exclusion from sharing does not work.
    iTunes 10.2.2 (12)
Could anyone try is it working on your iTunes?

Thank you for pointing me to the home sharing.
This one was turned off in my Macs. However, I enabled it now for apps and it seams it is quite useful feature and not only as a backup.
Do you know if I update apps on one of iTunes home shares it will be automatically updated on another ones, or it synchronizes the new purchases/apps only?
Never the less, this does not answer to my question. Sorry for my English, I know she is poor
what I want from iTunes at the moment.
Let's say I have some movies in my iTunes library. This library is shared (regular share) and can be accessed by other family members from their devices (to stream music/video from my iTunes library on Mac to their devices without having to download it). However, I prefer my kids to not have access (and in this case no one to have access via iTunes share) to some of i.e. movies I have in my iTunes library.
Question: Is it possible to prevent iTunes to share only some files in my library having the rest of the library shared?
UPDATE: suddenly the share exception started to work. After clicking on a file that is excluded from my shares the message "You are not authorized to open this file" appears.
Than you ed for your time.

  • Transferring iTunes file settings & iPod to iMac 27" - easy or impossible?

Hi, I'm just about to buy the iMac 27" and I have only one concern about moving off my last PC...but it's a big one!
I have over 100 playlists - lovingly created over many years - and over 150GB of music, books and podcasts on iTunes and the associated iPod. I also have an iPOd Touch which uses some of the playlists but has lots of applications!
Is it possible / easy / impossible / very hard to transfer iTunes files and settings exactly as they are on my PC to the new iMac. If I can do this successfully, I presume that the iPod conversion will happen the first time I sync the device...or does this have to be done separately?
Thanks a million for any help!
    Sham-one

If you use the default settings, everything used by iTunes is stored in the iTunes folder. On a Windows PC, it is here
    \Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
On a Mac, it is here
    /Users/<username>/Music/iTunes/
So what you need to do is copy that entire iTunes folder from the Windows PC to a large enough external hard drive. Then connect that external hard drive to a Mac. When iTunes is NOT running, replace the existing iTunes folder on the Mac with the one from the Windows PC. You can either rename the existing iTunes folder, move it to another location, or delete it. The idea is for your Windows PC iTunes folder to take the place of the existing iTunes folder. When you start iTunes on the Mac, it should use the iTunes library file you transferred and iTunes should look the same as on the Windows PC.
Instead of using an external drive, you can do the transfer of the iTunes folder using a network connection between the Windows PC and Mac.
If you changed your settings so that your music and other iTunes media files are not all stored in the Windows PC's iTunes folder, please post back. You can still do it this way, but there are some additional steps.
Note: If you have protected content from the iTunes Store, you will have to register the new Mac as one of your (up to) five computers authorized with your iTunes Store account. You can do so from the Store menu in iTunes. If you are no longer using your Windows PC, be sure to deauthorize it.

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • Moving iTunes files from PC to Mac

I have most of my iTunes files on my iMac and want to copy them into iTunes on my PC. I thought about moving them from the iMac onto a thumb drive and them importing them into iTunes on the PC, but don't know if the thumb drive can be used on both Mac and PC. If not, any other suggestions to move 4 GB of files the easiest way possible?

Format your thumb drive as fat32 and it will be read by both PC and Mac. If you have less than 4GB of music then you should be fine

  • How Do I Use DVD Studio Pro Files In iDVD?

I had somebody create a DVD for me using DVD Studio Pro. (This was a compilation of many different videos.) It turned out great.
I now want to make a DVD of one of those videos on my own using iDVD '08.
I have the raw video/audio files. But, my problem is the raw files that were used for the DVD Studio Pro project are separated into one video file and one audio file. I don't know how I can get them both into iDVD. I was told that I have to recombine these two files into one file. But, how do I do this and still maintain the best quality?
(I am not a video expert by any means, but I can tell you that the video file is a ".mpeg" and the audio file is an ".ac3". When looking at the .mpeg file in the finder it lists its Kind as "MPEG Movie" and when looking at the .ac3 file in the finder it lists its Kind as "Unix Executable File".)
(I'm using iDVD 7.0.1 - I do have Quicktime Pro - I do not have the Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback component - I do not have DVD Studio Pro)
Thanks in advance for your help!

Q: How Do I Use DVD Studio Pro Files In iDVD?
    A: You don't, essentially.
DVDSP is apple's top end app and it is intended to be used with FCP > Compressor > DVDSP. All of these are pro apps.
i-Apps are consumer apps all of which are QT based. With that in mind ....
now that doesn't mean you can't use FCP > iDvd. You can. But you have to do it in a way that iDvd will read all the files (meaning you must think in terms of QuickTime and export in this way). So when you export your QT File / Movie from FCP over to iDvd, it will look something like this hopefully regardless of the raw image & audio files you have already compiled which unfortunately will NOT work with i-Apps BUT will work with apple's pro apps which is the intended workflow / direction of said files in the first place.
Btw ... if your QT movie has chapter markers then please use the following settings so iDvd can read these markers. (if on the other hand you were looking to export this file to DVDSP; then you would choose DVDSP Markers.
Let me know if the above helps. If not, just come on back.

  • I received a gift card and when I redeemed it an error message said that I had some itunes files missing and that I needed to reinstall itunes.  Will I still have all my credits when I download itunes?

I received an online gift card for Father's Day.  When I tried to redeem the gift then I received a error message saying I had some itune files missing and I needed to reinstall/download itunes.  Will I still have my previous purchase credits after downloading and reistalling itunes?

You will, because the credited funds are on your iTunes account, not the application. When you reinstall iTunes just configure it with your old iTunes account and your credits will be there waiting for you.

    Please!
    Thanks!

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • I want to transfer my iTunes files to a separate hard drive

I have iTunes stored on my desktop PC. It is the one that I have, so far, stored all iTunes music on. I wanted to transfer these songs to a separate hard drive to free up space on my computer's hard drive. I felt I needed to install iTunes on the separate hard drive which I did today. I then thought I could just find the same type of folder on the separate hard drive that was on the PC but that was not the case so I created a "regular" folder on the hard drive and copied all of the files over. It appears that the files successfully got copied but the screen display does not look the same as it does when I open my PC iTunes and open a music folder from there.
What is the best way for me to copy the files over so I can then delete them from my PC with the assurity that I will not have done something that I will later regret ... such as rendering these copied files as ones I cannot burn to a disc, etc.

Changing the setting as to where to store media will indeed put the media files (but not the rest of the iTunes library files) on the external drive as long as the user also selects to organize the media to the NAS.  If you don't do that, iTunes will only store new media there from that time on.
I would not recommend keeping only media on the NAS.  As I said, NAS can have issues with iTunes and some of the longest topics I have seen here are how to rebuild a library after for some reason the library file on the Mac computer has lost the link information to the media files stored on a NAS.  Some things such as date added, play count, and ratings are only stored in the library file and may be lost if you have to rebuild your library file.
I guess for me the only iTunes reason for having a NAS would be to do direct sharing of the library rather than having to use Home Sharing.  Direct sharing of the library intact requires placing all the iTunes files on the NAS. If you're going to do Home Sharing you might as well opt for a a cheaper, more stable, plain external hard drive.

  • Bought a MBA and am trying to keep iTunes files on an external hard drive. Having problems.

Hi, I bought a MBA 13" and want to keep my iTunes files on an external hard drive to save space. However, I keep running into problems. I can't get the iTunes Media folder to stay on the folder in my external hard drive. Whenever I unplug it, regardless if iTunes is open or not, it changes back to the media file on the MBA. I tried renaming the media folder and deleting it, but the computer just makes another if I do that and then ends up deleting my whole library, forcing me to load it all back from my hard drive. Can anyone help me out on this? Thanks.

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"
