Authorizing iTunes on an iPad

I've got a question re. my iPad. Itunes on a computer has a 'authorize this computer' option under a menu. On an iPad, there is no such option. Is my iPad considered one of the 5 'computeres' that I am allowed to authorise under one itunes account? Richard

You must have used another ID on the kids iPad minis and downloaded previously purchased content with that other ID. When you switch ID's on an iDevice - and then download a past purchase with that ID - you have to wait 90 days before you can switch ID's again. You can only associate a device with an Apple ID once very 90 days.
This is to prevent users from switching from one ID, to another ID to another ID, etc, so that they can download content again without having to pay for it.

    If you're using iTunes 11 click on the box icon in the top-left corner to see the " Show Menu Bar "  
    and from the Menu Bar select Store...
    From the Store menu, choose Authorize This Computer.

    You can re-download your apps and ibooks purchases via your purchase history in iTunes on your computer (assuming that it's version 10.3+), and if you are in the USA then you can also re-download music I think - more info here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
    For music that you ripped from CDs or bought from a source other than iTunes then, assuming that you made/maintained one, you can copy them from your backup - and backups are relatively easy to maintain, so there is no reason not to have one (especially as content is occasionally removed from iTunes so isn't always available for re-download). Otherwise there may be third-party programs that can copy them off the iPad, but you can't do it via iTunes - this post from a year ago was about iPod/iPhone to computer utilities but some might work with the iPad : https://discussions.apple.com/message/11646661?messageID=11646661&#11646661 .
    If you've got content in other apps that you want to copy back to your computer then you might be able to do via the file sharing section at the bottom of the iPad's apps tab in iTunes, or they might have wifi transfer capability.

  • Why does iTunes think my iPad is a new one?

    When I connect my otherwise happy iPad to iTunes, iTunes says "This computer has previously been synced with an iPad or another iOS device" and wants me either to "set up as new iPad" or "restore from the backup of <my iPad name>". Of course it's just the same iPad I've connected, so why does iTunes not recognise it as such?
    This happened before, and I know if I select "Restore from the backup of <my iPad name>", it deletes and restores all the apps and media content, but in the process I lose all data e.g. progress in games, data and configurations entered into apps etc.
    This is iTunes 10.2.2.12 on Win 7 64-bit, iPad 16GB with iOS 4.3.1.
    Any suggestions what I can do? Even if I have to restore from backup, is there a way I can prevent this happening again?

    I'm having same problem! I tried the trick of unplugging right after the sync begins and the only thing my iPad does is give me a sync failure message and restarts itself. I plug ipad back in and get same message??? I've emailed iTunes support and they have not been able to help. I tried all the standard stuff like de-authorizing/athorizing, checked that my iPad iOS is the latest version (which it is), latest version of iTunes installed (even uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes). No matter what I try cannot get around this message.  I too have tons of app settings/configurations that get lost if I go thru the restore option.  I actually tried the restore option out of frustration, lost all of my configurations AND still get the same message - seems like my iPad is caught up in a loop no matter what I try.  To make matters worse, my iTunes library got lost as all my songs are showing up with an '!' next to each song (meaning it cannot locate the file).  I checked and they are truely missing so when I go to my purchased music all of my purchases show up (all 4000+ of them) however are all listed as 'Downloaded' in the right margin???  My true objective here is to be able to transfer my purchases on my iPad to my iTunes as my iPad is complete as far as all apps/recent purchases.  HELP !!!     I eagerly awaited 4.2.1 to finally put my apps into folders on my iPad. I have nearly 300 apps which are unorganized, many not accessible from the standard iPad screens since they go beyond the 11 app pages.
    I spent a bunch of time making folders and organizing this mess using the brand new iTunes 10.1, iPad 4.2.1 and on my Apply / Sync, ALL of the time customizing was lost -- none of the folders appeared on the Ipad after the sync.
    I tried even moving 1 app from another screen, and it didn't sync over.
    I then made a couple folders on the iPad directly, and when reconnected to iTunes, I see these folders. Any subsequent alterations made on iTunes don't sync over.
    I wonder if this is related to going over my 11th screen limit?
    I dread dealing with all of these using only the iPad. I know it’s a lot of apps, but that's what folders are for!
    Anyone else not getting iTunes to sync folders/app arrangements with iTunes 10.1 and iPad 4.2.1?

    I have this issue as well. I have an iPhone 3G 16GB, just updated to the latest iTunes and 4.2.1 firmware. I'm on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I've spend like 1,5 hours total reorganizing apps, all for nothing.

  • Using iTunes and the iPad in the classroom

    One of the schools that I support in our school district recently purchased two iPads.  We need to establish iTunes accounts that do not have a payment method associated with them.  We have setup the devices and are looking forward to downloading FREE apps from the iTunes store.  We have attempted to create our Apple ID in two different manners:
    1.  Go directly to iTunes on the iPad and select a free app.  Click download.  Prompted to setup an account.  Was not presented with the "none" option for payment.
    2.  Went directly into the iPad settings to "iTunes and App Store."  Again, no "none" option for payment.
    Our department does not have access to a credit card nor a gift card due to funding.  I would appreciate any help that the iTunes department can provide to me about how to properly setup these iPads so that our students can utilize them in the classroom.

    You don't get them from an ipad to an ipod.
    Both the ipod and ipad sync to your computer.
    I do not understand your question.  if you want to purchase music, then tap itunes on your ipad, find the song you want, buy it.

    You wouldn't connect the iPod to the iPad for data transfers. Music is stored and shared either through a computer or iCloud.

    You should be able to copy them to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases and you can then sync them to the iPhone (or you could re-download them directly on the iPhone)

    If you are now in the US then you can only use the US store, so you should update the address on your account
    Changing country : Change the country of your iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, and Mac App Store account.
    Had you copied the songs over to your computer's iTunes library, do they show in the Music section on it ? You can copy purchases that you still have on your iPad over to your computer's iTunes library via the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option

    Tap the Videos app and tap the movies button at the top of the page.
    The iTunes app on your iPad is just a conduit to the iTunes Store.  To play your purchases, use the iPod app or the Videos app.

    You did try tapping on one of them in that list in the iPod app! This has happened to me and I was able to start the movie from there. You could try restarting the iPad, go into the iPod app and try again.
    Now I'm stumped unless it is a corrupt download. You did download right onto the iPad - correct? If you downloaded in iTunes, there is a Move tab or function that you have to select to transfer the movies to the iPad when you sync. They just don't sync over without selecting move.

    If you are the only user on your computer you probably don't have multiple user accounts set up and can disregard that.  If you are using iTunes 11 go to View>Show Sidebar.  Now see if your iPad appears under Devices on the left side when you connect it.  If it does, click on the name of your iPad on the left side and your iTunes sync settings options will appear in folders with tabbed headings to the right.
