Auto align & distribute objects in a grid?

i love the align & distribute 'tools' i use them all the time.
but it has always appeared thay they are only good for a single row of objects.
is this correct or is it possible to select a 'grid' of objects and have them evenly aligned & distributed?

Yup it's here Christoph..

It would be very nice to have the setting "Align New Objects to Pixel Grid" at the layer level.

    kaanungur,
I am afraid you have come across the Live Rectangle bug sorry feature where it refuses to align to the Pixel Grid.
To get round it in each case, it is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles, or to Pathfinder>Unite, or to use the Scale Tool or the Free Transform Tool.
A more permanent way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

  • Align New objects to pixel grid does not seem to work - Windows 7

Here is another issue I've been struggling with for a while.
    Scenario:
    1. Working on a web UI, so want to use pixel grid, which is handy. So I create a new document, web profile and making sure 'Align New Objects to Pixel Grid' is selected:
    2. Yay! We have a nice and clean new document, cannot wait to start drawing rectangles! But let's double-check if everything is hunky dory:
    3. Right! Let's go and start making rectangles!
    4. And NOOOOOOOO!!!! As you can see in the image above, the rectangle is not aligned to pixel grid (look at the values), and it's "Align to pixel grid" option is not selected. Let's triple-check our options:
So yeah, there you go. It's all lies! You have to check the check box AFTER you create the shapes FOR EACH SHAPE!
Illustrator why you do this?! What am I missing here?!

  • Illustrator CS6 - How do I align objects into a grid?

I am a fan of pixel art and the Live Paint Bucket tool in Illustrator CS6 (I don't really like using Photoshop for this because it is more limited in this field). I have made a thing in pixel art, but I noticed that things weren't exactly lined up. See the picture:
It has messed up the paint bucket tool a lot. Can I align these so that they make a grid? I have tried the Align tools, but I end up with stuff like this:
    Horizontal Distribute Center
Can I do this (without changing the document grid)? I have tried this script, but I get this:
Note: My grid is not in proper layer order.

    easyaspi,
How about using Align to Pixel Grid?
You may select everything and tick Align to Pixel Grid in the Transform palette, and also tick Align new Objects to pixels Grid in the Options flyout.
You may also use a document type with that as default (RGB for web and the like).

  • Aligning and Distributing objects in InDesign

    Hi,
I am using InDesign CS4. But I am having a trouble aligning objects. I know that in illustrator it is possible to align objects to a main object. For example, lets say I have several same square shapes on my page. I can make any one of the squares as the main object for others to get aligned or distributed to.
I wanted to do the same thing in InDesign but was never able to do that. I wonder if it is even possible to do that. InDesign doesn't seem to have that option. But it was such a handy tool.
Can you help me with the trick?

Thanks Peter Spier. I am sorry for the misleading information. You were right about the alignment and distribution tools. On my CS4, the Alignment option works with the locked object, but the Distribue Objects and Distribute with Set Space doesn't work with a locked object. I am trying to use the distribute with a set spacing around "the main object". In other words, it will make my work a lot easier if I first align an object at a certain point on the page and then use two other text frames on both sides of the object with an equal spacing (using the Distribute Spacing tool).
I hope it makes a sence. Thanks.

  • Objects no longer auto-aligning with each other

    Hi there,
I'm new to Adobe Illustrator CS4 and desperately need expertise. I think the settings got messed with, because now whenever I move an object, it no longer tries to "auto align" with nearby objects or their borders. I don't know what this feature is called, but it's when a smaller circle will kind of "snap" to the center of a larger circle, or I believe it will also show when their boundaries are tangent.
Apologies for my noobishness, but how do I turn feature this back on? I find the program very hard to use without it.
Many blessings for your generous explanation and kindness.

In the View menu: Smart Guides, Snap to Point. You might have hit a keyboard shortcut by accident.

  • Align and Distribute Objects Evenly around a Circular Path

How do I align objects and distribute evenly on a circular path? Especially if the objects are straight lines and I want them to be placed vertically and evenly around a circle. For example, the hash marks on a speedometer are vertical lines, but distributed evenly in a circular shape. I've gone throught the align/distribute video, but doesn't explain circular paths. I have Adobe CS3 for Windows XP.

I've done this many times and there's a simple trick to it as long as you want an even number of tick marks. Make the line, duplicate it, move one of the lines below the other, and align them horizontally. Group the lines and bring up the Transform dialog. Click on Preview so you can see what you're doing. Enter the number of copies you want and then the angle to rotate the copies. You should see a perfectly arranged circle of lines. Expand Appearance to work with the lines further.
Example: to make the tick marks for a clock face, make the first pair of lines, group them, make 5 copies, and rotate 30 degrees.

  • Blend tool problems with distributing objects.

    Hi Everyone,
First time here so I hope this is the appropriate forum locale for this specific question - of which I have not found a solution online or in these forums.
I have dealt with this problem for quite some time and am sick of manually correcting blends so I am seeking help.
    Here is the situation:
I draw a simple oval, copy it and move it somewhat diagonally across the page.  I then resize the oval slightly (thinner) but retain the same amount of anchor points.
I then rotate the oval about 2 degrees.
Next I apply a blend - hoping it will blend the two shapes evenly (like it did in pre CS versions) but the blended ovals get closer to each other on one side than the other - so it seems to be a weighting problem... so I checked out each of the blend options and even tried the various methods of making a blend (via panel, or pull down menu, hot keys, etc.)  Nothing works to get the shapes evenly spaced.  Distribution and alignment panel offers no help either and in some cases makes the objects distribute more unevenly.
Summary:  If I make two IDENTICAL shapes/ovals, the blend works fine... but once I modify one of the ovals, before or after the blend is made, even in the slightest bit, the distribution spacing gets skewed/uneven.
I don't think it is a bug since I've had this problem since early CS days.   Is anyone else having this problem?
I hope it is an easy fix.  I am using a PC version of Illustrator, if that matters in this case.
Thank you ahead of time for your consideration and help.

I've tried all those options (distribute spacing, distribute objects, specified distance, specified steps, etc) without success... it wound up just being the 'ol visual issue described above and the manner in which I set up my illustration.
So after I create a blend, I try the various options to get the objects to align / distribute correctly (to fix the visual issue), but after, say, applying "distribute spacing", the ovals arc slightly so that they are not aligned in a straight manner from end to end.
I then try other alignment options and nothing seemed to correct the alignment from one oval to the next... thus I had to correct it manually.
Anyways, I found that if I set up my illustration so as to do my oval blends on a horizontal or vertical axis (without transforming one side, but keeping them all the same - in a grid-like pattern) and then Free Transform the group of ovals afterwards to indicate perspective and the like -- that seems to be a reasonable solution.
I also learned a new trick in this process / forum post.
I won't be able to reply for a while... All is well now and I gotta get to work, so it's literally back to the drawing board for me.
    Thanks again!   =)

  • Better alignment tool or a new live effect align/distribute

Alignment is unchanged since the old days of AI. We need a smarter way to align objects or distribute objects.
    IDEA
SMART ALIGN=auto align feature in AI
    Old way:
if you want to center an object (text box) to a previously selected area (between two objects) we make a RECTANLGLE as a reference and we align horizontal centers.
    This is tedious.
If the text box gets bigger or smaller you need to correct the size of the rectangle.
    And again and again…
THE TEXT BOX NEEDS TO REALIGNS TO THE PREVIOUSLY SELECTED OBJECT. a checkbox should be given as an option for auto alignment.

I repaired permissions using my computer disk utility AND from my install DVD. Still not working! I also did a PRAM, that I read about on the internet...

  • Distributed objects leak memory

    When passing this C struct
    NSString* nickname;
    unsigned age;
    } ConnectInfo;
to this method of distributed object
    - (oneway void)connect:(in ConnectInfo*)ci
    nickname = \[ci->nickname retain]; // or copy - doesn't matter
the NSString is reported leaked by `leaks` tool. There are as many strings leaked as many calls I did. Memory dump shows exactly this string object's contents. Allocation stack trace points inside NSInvocation/_NSWalkData, not into my code.
Distributed object is running in separate Cocoa thread in same process. Both threads has auto-release pool established, and there's no warnings in log regarding autoreleasing. SDK is 10.4u, OS is 10.5.4, my platform is PowerPC.
I tried all combinations of oneway, two-way, in, inout, bycopy, byref, retaining, copying, passing pointer, or reference (ConnectInfo&) to string - every time the string is leaked. If there are more strings in struct, they are also leaked. The only working method is to cast pointer to integer value, but this is a kind of hack.
DO runtime is obviously doing a deep copy of plain C struct, and somehow forgets to release Obj-C objects it copied. Is this a DO bug, or am I doing something wrong?

    kasym wrote:

No, it isn't. It is doing a bitwise copy. It doesn't "forget" to release the Objective C object. That object is inside a C struct. Nothing happens automatically in C.
Is this a DO bug, or am I doing something wrong?
You are doing something wrong. When working in Cocoa, especially things like Distributed Objects, stick to Cocoa. Use an NSDictionary instead.

  • Locking Layers & Auto Align

I noticed that when you go to use Auto Align, if you have one layer with transparency locked and one layer without transparency not locked, select both layers and run Auto Align, it will move the layer that is locked rather than the one that is unlocked. Just curious if this is normal.
Correction: Actually it moves both layers. Rather than aligning one to the other and keeping the locked one where you want it, both layers are moved.

It looks like the auto align layers button is greyed out because some of your layers are smart objects.
You should rasterize the smart object layers and then auto align should work.
Select the smart object layers in the layers panel, right click on one of the layers and choose Rasterize Layers.

  • How to Disable "Auto Align" in [System Pref.] - [Display] - [Arrangement]

Does anyone know How to Disable "Auto Align" in [System Preferences] -> [Display] -> [Arrangement]?
It always want to align the two screens from the top when they are lined up close together and I need them to be aligned from the bottom. Since the resolution heights are so close together (1080 & 1050) it does not allow one to align side by side from the bottom as it prioritizes top alignment.
I guess I'm looking for a script to disable this feature.

    Anyone got any ideas?

  • Batch Action to Distribute Layers Evenly (without align/distribute tool)

Hi everyone, I'm having trouble distributing layers in photoshop. I have try many way to batch the process via action script but failed doing it the way I needed it. Please let me know if you have any idea. Here's what I need to do.
I have 360 PNGs (like the one on the left below) and trying to put them into one PSD files with transparency. The problem is I need to have the layers spaced evenly with precise pixel in between AND all images layout in the correct sequence (so each will be 1 rotation degree off).
So I went into Bridge, select all 360 PNG and combined them into one photoshop file. But then all images landed on top of each other, then I tried the align/distribute tool but they messed up the sequence and I have no way to control pixel spacing. I have many sets of these needed to be done and I'm in pain trying to get this working. Please help and thanks in advance!

  • In Keynote '09 distribute objects horizontally/vertically is distributing objects beyond the slide. How do I make the left-most and right-most objects the limit of the distribution?

I used to have the option of distributing objects so that they would overlap, but the current "distribute" tool is functioning as if overlapping isn't allowed. The result is that the objects move beyond the limits of the slide. Any suggestions?

I know that's what *should* happen, but it just doesn't. I've made screen-grabs of the entire process:
Like I said, this use to work just as you've described it. Is there a box I accidentally selected? I just really don't understand why the tool has changed the way it functions...

  • Script to align selected objects to artboard

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had a simple solution to aligning selected items to the artboard. I was going to create an action but then realized it would be more convenient for me to include it in my script file....I have a script to align objects with each other but they dont align to the artboard. Any suggestions?

    Hello volocitygraphics,
    here is a quick&dirty solution.
Note that the result may be different, if clipping masks are exists in the document.
Please test it at first on copies of your documents. Use it on your own risk.

    // works with CS5

            alert ("No selection");
I hope so, the document coordinatesystem is the same as in CS6+
    Have fun
