Auto align layers moves my locked layer?

I am using CS4 and I want to align a couple of layers. I have no problem getting it to work, except for the fact that it will move all of my layers, even my background layer wich is locked. I thought that if you first locked a layer, then selected the other layers, all of those unlocked layers would be aligned to the locked layer? I want to keep that background layer from moving.
Thanks,
Steve

Yes the new Auto-align feature in Photoshop should be better implemented than it is. Locking the Movement of layers should certainly regsiter with Auto_align, and its quite ridiculous that it doesn't. If all selected layers happen to be locked then a warning should come up
D. Fosse has your answer over how to do this at present, it requires re-ordering your layers.
You should post a Feature Request about this.

  • Auto Align Layers not working

    Hello,
I am trying to auto align layers from a commercial job to mask different exposures and flashes in and out.
Every time I try to auto align, it doesn't work.
I make them JPGs in Lightroom and bring them over to photoshop.
I add a base layer and then upload the other exposure/light layers.
I make a group to add the exposures into but not the base layer.
    Select them all.
Go to Edit - Auto Align Layers - but its always greyed out.
    I am extremely frustrated. Help.
    Kelsey

Try unlocking the base layer.  Not sure if that'll effect it, but I could see it not wanting to auto-align if a layer was locked, even the base layer.
I would also try auto-aligning as soon as you import, before grouping.  Shouldn't make a difference, but I do some RE/architectural work myself, and have never run into issue with my workflow (from lightroom I choose "open as layers in Photoshop", then autoalign, then group and mask and edit).  Though I don't usually run auto-align.  I assume you're on a tripod, did something move?

  • Analog of Auto Align Layers and Auto Blend Layers?

In Photoshop you can use Auto Align Layers then Auto Blend Layers to select the region that is in focus from each layer. How can I do the same thing in PSE 9?  Thanks.

No, you really can't do focus stacking in PSE without a third party plug-in of some sort. This thread is about PSE 8, but it applies to PSE 9 as well:

  • Auto Aligning Layers

    Hi there,
I am trying to combine 2 images together in photoshop CS4, and have managed to open the images as separate layers under one file and select them together. But when I click Edit>Auto-Align Layers>Auto, all I see is a pop-up saying "Layers do not overlap enough to detect alignment, in general images should overlap by approx 40%". What should I do? I have already resized them to be equal in size. Please help..Thank you!

To give a bit of a more real world example, here are two images that I'd like to align:
    #1
    #2
Here is approximately how they overlap:
    Here they are auto aligned:
With the distrotion that happens (it's like a 3D view of what the camera movement was to take these two pictures). We can see that the overlap will shift slightly, so if there isn't enough of the same material overlapping, you may not have enough to cover this distortion.
Can you post the images you are working with?

  • Auto-Align Layers using AS

It is possible to Auto-Align Layers using AppleScript?
I cannot find the command in the Dictionary.
Otherwise the only solution is to call an action that call Auto-Align Layers.
    Stefano

Capste, an alternative to calling an action is to use script listener output code in your applescript and call this with do javascript. This way you need no external items. This should work as long as you have more than one layer selected when calling it. The six options should be self evident in the commented applescript line above the handler call.

  • Auto-align Layers and Merge to HDR Pro crashes

    Hi,
Has anybody else experienced crashes with Merge to HDR Pro or Auto-align Layers? I was trying to use Merge to HDR Pro from Lightroom and was experiencing crashes every time after it had opened all of the images and merged them into a single document (but before the HDR Pro dialog box had come up).
I've tested this further with opening each image individually and then trying to merge them as well as via Bridge and always get the same result.
I had then decided to try layering the images and blend them to create my HDR image and that's when I found that Auto-align Layers was crashing as well. This leads me to believe that it's actually the auto-align functionality that's causing the crash rather than Merge to HDR Pro as I'm pretty sure that the merge functionality performs an auto-align as part of its steps.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? I'm wondering if I may have to completely remove Photoshop. I can do this if necessary but if there's some other way to fix this I'd rather try that first.

Okay, solved my own problem. I bit the bullet and did do a reinstall. I'd remembered that one of the previous Photoshop upgrades had failed (either 12.0.1 or 12.0.2) and I'd never gotten around to fixing it. Looking into that suggested reinstalling as the solution so I figured I should try uninstalling and reinstalling then apply all the upgrades and then try it again.
This time the upgrades did go through properly and I was just able to do a merge to HDR pro successfully so it looks like that's fixed the issue.

  • Auto align layers

I have downloaded a 30 day trial of Photoshop CS3 Extended. I use Windows XP. In the demo on the adobe.com site, there appears to be a feature where you can align 2 images such as a group shot, where you want to take a face from one image and put it in the other image. Can you please tell me how this is done? Thanks for your help.

This info is available in many places. A good place to start would be the help file (f1), another google.com.
But since you bothered to find this forum and ask your question here:
Bring all your images into one file as layers. Select all layers by shift-clicking them. Go Edit>Auto Align Layers.

  • CS5 - Why are Edit Auto Blend Layers (and Auto Align Layers) gray and not accessible?

I have CS5 and would like to try focus stacking.  I File > Automate > Photomerge with a few photos.  They have been aligned in layers.  I would like to Auto Blend Layers but the function is gray and not accessible.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Thank you THANK YOU.  As I was doing this I realized you asked me to show my selected layers.  I haven't been doing that.  I thought photoshop would blend all open layers.  Thanks again.

  • Locking Layers & Auto Align

I noticed that when you go to use Auto Align, if you have one layer with transparency locked and one layer without transparency not locked, select both layers and run Auto Align, it will move the layer that is locked rather than the one that is unlocked. Just curious if this is normal.
Correction: Actually it moves both layers. Rather than aligning one to the other and keeping the locked one where you want it, both layers are moved.

It looks like the auto align layers button is greyed out because some of your layers are smart objects.
You should rasterize the smart object layers and then auto align should work.
Select the smart object layers in the layers panel, right click on one of the layers and choose Rasterize Layers.

  • Align layers CS5

Hi, It might be too easy for many of you. But i am struggling aligning few layers altogether. I have set of different scan 2D images (artwork). I like to either auto or any other neat way to align them. Currently I am using move tool with transform to do the job. But at times it become laymen / work. Any help is appericiated.

I don't think Auto Align Layers is going to be able to bite on this since there's very little that's common between layers.  You're probably stuck with lining them up by hand.
You say you're having to transform them...  These scans seem quite inaccurate, since the size from one side of the image you posted to the other seems several pixels off.  For printed circuit layouts I should think accuracy would be paramount.  If the sizing/spacing was accurate from scan to scan, and additionally the vertical/horizontal registration was good, your job would just boil down to alignment, no?
I guess I'm just not getting a good mental picture of what you're doing here.

  • When have multiple layers, move images and text all starting from background layer

    Greetings
I have an image that has some 24 layers, many of these are text.  When trying to move the images and text all on the same layer yesterday, I ran into problems, but eventually fixed by moving these items starting from the background layer, by using Ctrl\Move.
This worked so well that I thought I would show my fellow learners at our regular Friday session on Elements 11 at SeniorNet.  However when I went to show them I could move easily and freely on the background layer - without using Ctrl, just the move tool.  Elements simply moved very quickly from the background layer to the relevent layer with the image or text (as before ?).
Cannot understand why I could not do that in the first place at home, but I had lots of tries there.  What circumstances could have been different ?

Did you have "Auto Select Layers" ticked on the tool's option bar?
It is not clear to me what the ultimate goal of your demonstration is. You can combine  the 24 layers into one layer (referred to as stamp visible layer) without flattening the layer structure. To do this, do the following:
Open a blank layer at the top of the stack of layers in the layers palette
    Press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+E on the keyboard
You can work on this stamp visible layer. The layers below will not be impacted. If you don't like what you have done, simply delete the stamp visible layer, then start over.

  • "Align Layers Based on Content" locking up Photoshop CS6

Using "Align Layers..." is a function I use daily.  Many, many times.  Yesterday, using this normal function began locking up my Photoshop session.  I have 1.5GB+ of scratch disk available.  I'm using the same procedures I've always used.  I've reinstalled Photoshop CS6.  Any ideas?  I'm into work around mode, since I have lots of work to do, but I'd love to get this process back on track so I can get back to a normal workflow.

My bad, Terri.  I meant 1.5 TB.  Brain freeze.  The problem, though, has been solved by resetting the Photoshop preferences.  But since I have your attention, let me toss out another anomaly I could use some help with.  About 50% of the time, when I select a tool, like a brush or a clone stamp or a healing brush and attempt to use it, it doesn't work.  If I leave the PS page, though, and go to Bridge or Lightroom and return to Photoshop, the tools work.  Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

  • Disable Auto Align in Photomerge

    Good day.
So far I got good reply.
For now I wonder, can "Auto Align Selected Layers Based on Contents" be disabled during photomerge?
    Why do I want that?
=> First, most of times the auto align result is not good
=> it takes time to wait for window to appear, sometimes hangs
=> When all images are jumbled together, it is like making jigsaw puzzle.
Actually I got used to Photoshop CS2 where I disable auto align check box...
And I manually create the "mosaic" (not just a flat panorama) from images taken from microscope.
    Thanks in advance.

However, even if I use interactive layout in PSE11 (trial version)...
The software still attempts to "Auto Align''
I don't know of a way to turn that off.
    r_vinoya wrote:
is it possible to photomerge first without blending... then blend it later when you already fixed the image position?
You can turn the blending off, but I don't think that automated blending later can be done.
As it seems that you want to do most of the work manually, have you considered just creating a new blank image of the anticipated width and height of your final composite (plus a contingency) and dragging your source files to it to put each one on a layer where you can individually move them into place?
There is a workaround to restore the interactive layout to PSE12 - http://forums.adobe.com/message/5741182. If you don't have access to PSE11 (you need to copy some of the PSE11 files) you can download its trial from http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-11-direct-download-links-pse-premiere-pre.htm l. Follow their very important instructions EXACTLY or you will likely encounter authorisation errors or download the latest version instead.

  • Align layers according to masks

I'm working on a mosaic image in which each "tile" is a masked photo. The pre-masked photos are all different sizes, but the mask I'm using on each photo is the same, so the net effect is that there are all these identically-sized squares.
I'm trying to align the rows and columns according to the mask shapes -- you know, line up all the squares neatly. But it's not working because it wants to align according to the PRE-masked contents of the layers, which of course are all different sizes, so that's totally useless. I've looked and looked, and there does not seem to be a way to align layers according to the masks. I just can't believe this, this is such a simple request, is there seriously no way to do this??
Many thanks to anyone who can help!
    -zoe

One solution might be to create the boxes using the Rectangle Tool and arrange them into a grid using the align tools (turn on Auto Select to make it easier to grab the boxes). Then add each photo above its relevant box and create a clipping mask by option-clicking between the photo and the rectangle layer.
Finally, in case they need to be rearranged, link the photo and rectangle layers in the layers panel flyout menu.
You could also snap guides to the boxes. If you need to move a box, first link the photo and rectangle layers then select just the rectangle in the layers panel and drag with the Move Tool (switch Auto Select off for this).
