Auto-brightness making screen very dull

I noticed that when auto-brightness is turned on, screen becomes considerably dull in low lighting conditions. Compared this with my iPhone 3G (both set at the same brightness level with auto-brightness turned on) and the difference was very striking.
Anyone else facing similar issue?

Was one of the first things I noticed about the iPhone 4. What's the point of having such a beautiful screen if you're going to leave it so dull by default?
They keep changing how it works. It was at its best on the original iPhone with the original software. The current manner of adjusting itself makes no sense at all.
I'd go as far as to say almost every implementation of "automatic brightness adjustment" I've used, on laptops to big screen TVs, doesn't work right. They usually try to over-simplify the interface to a point that makes it useless.
To me they need to allow you configure what brightness you want for given conditions. When it's dark, I want "this" brightness, when it's bright outside I want "this", and when it's average room lighting I want "this."

Have you tried a reboot of the iPhone?  Hold both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if it appears.
My iPhone went to full brightness all the time after updating to iOS 6.1.3.  A reboot seems to have helped make it work as it should.  Also check Settings > Brightness and Wallpaper and see how it is set, reduce the brightness level it is too bright for you.

  • Auto brightness of screen and keyboard backlight not working

Basically, since I updated to OS X Lion, the auto brightness feature for the screen and keyboard hasnt been working, despite the fact I have it turned on
Thanks in advance for your help

Same problem here.  I initially thought the auto-brightness problem had been fixed in 10.7.3, but sadly it hasn't. The auto-brightness works when the Mac starts, but I find it loses control and fails after wake from sleep.
I have telephoned AppleCare several times but they are not aware of this bug.  They think a PRAM reset cures it, but it doesn't.  As soon as the machine goes to sleep then auto-brightness fails on wake.
I have used the Apple Form to report the bug.  It might eventually get fixed if others would kindly report it as well please.  Here is the link:

  • My 2009 iMac is making a very loud, rapid pulsating electronic noise. It stops temporarily after adjusting the screen brightness or using certain apps. But it always returns

My 2009 iMac is making a very loud noise. It sounds like a rapid, pulsating electronic noise. It stops when the screen brightness is adjusted or when using certain apps. But it always returns and is getting louder. The unit was shut down for 4 months and the house temperature was set to 5C. It was powered up 2 weeks ago and ran fine for a while. Then in the last 5 or 6 days the problem started. 5 days ago I did watch a bike race for 3 or 4 hours from a quasi legal stream. I am not tech savvy. Just very confused as I've had a trouble free run so far. Ditto with my iphone5.

I would recommend taking it in immediately to your local Apple Store or AASP to be loooked at by an Apple Genius. I suspect you made a goof somewhere but diagnosing noises without seeing it is really difficult.

  • Brightness screen very buggy

I have a brightness screen that is very buggy after 2.0 software, I reduce it to min all the way and sometimes when I put the passcode it stays bright as ****. Not going to the min of brightness.

Try turning off the auto brightness...
my brightness was very odd when that mode was turned on.
Anyone know what the behavior of turning this auto bright to on does? For example, does it sample the brightness once every 15 minutes? It just seems it doesn't respond accurately to changes in lighting.

  • When I turn on my iPad the grey 'brightness slider' is in the centre of the screen and I can't get rid of it. I've tried switching on / off 'auto-brightness' in 'settings' but it won't go away. What am I doing wrong? Any advice gratefully received.

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Why when I select a bright/rich color it wont let me and is instead a very dull version of that colo

why when I select a bright/rich color it wont let me and is instead a very dull version of that color? Why can't I select a color and get exactly what I picked?
    WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check your document color mode and the mode of the color picker as well as your color managemnt settings. You can't print certain colors in CMYK and AI is correctly adjusting gamut based on your settings on that assumption. Work in RGB if you need "pure" colors.

I don't know exactly what the issue is, but I think I do. Are you talking about what happens when you start up your MBP, full brightness, with power cable in - and when you're using battery only, the brightness dims? If so, this is a feature designed to make sure your monitor is bright enough while using batteries - but not so bright as to cause an undue drain on power.
I don't know about a cure to this issue, if indeed this is what you're talking about.

  • IPhone 4 screen black but responsive(Very Very Dull)

My iPhone 4 8GB, just fully charged it on my MacBook Pro unplugged it and the screen is black I can still hear incoming texts/calls and can see the screen very faintly if I hold it upto a bright light, tried resetting it and restoring it no joy, any help please.

Opening it doesn't do anything, lifting the battery and breaking that seal does and paying 149 isn't an option at all because I could buy a brand new one for that much.
I have checked that out but there are so many different problems it's hard to find the one I need that's why I posted on here in the first place.
What I need to know is if restoring it would fix it because maybe its a software glitch or if something is actually broken

  • Auto brightness not working -new screen protector or 4.0.2  to blame?

    Hi there,
I recently bought a couple of new cases for my ipod touch (latest gen 64gb.
They both came with a 'free' screen protector, one of which I have applied, can't recall which case it came with though. (and I'm not sure that matters anyway?)
Since I applied the new screen protector I don't seem to have auto brightness any more.It is there, in the settings screen. But it doesn't seem to be working.
I've tried switching it (the setting) on and off, turning the ipod off.
I applied the protector around the same time that I updated to 4.0.2 (8A400) - I may have done the update. I 'think' I udated the unit the day before but I cannot really recall. I don't remember on what day I did which change so can't say what is causing this error.
Is anyone else getting auto brightness errors after going up to 4.0.2?
Is this kind of issue common with some screen protectors?
New ipod user - never had an apple anything before this - had it about 2 months.
    Suggestions are GO

This morning, I updated to iOS4.0.2. I went to sleep with Pandora on (I work midnight shift) and when I awoke, I switched to mail and lost the music. Verified it wouldn't stay on and proceeded to do a hard reset (held down on/off switch and home button simultaneously well over ten seconds (( apple came on and then went blank/off again ))). Turned my iPhone 3GS on again and problem was gone. Hope this helps you too.

My iPhone 4S keeping changing the brightness on its own and I have already turned off the auto brightness etc and restarted multiple times for several weeks.  I can't see the screen to answer calls etc . Really annoying

Is the battery drained after it shuts itself off?
Did you already try to set it up as new device?
