Auto column width in Finder
Hi all,
Does anyone know if I can set finder to have column widths automatically extend to the width of the longest filename?
I don't think you can, but as always you can double click the column seperator to do that

Column width in finder LIST view
I am using Yosemite. This issue has been driving me mad for years and try as I may I cannot find the solution.
How do you set a default column width in Finder LIST view for all folders? Whatever I do (for example VIEW OPTIONS, USE AS DEFAULTS) does not work.
Can anybody help? I would use third party plugins if I could find something that controls this. Please note: I am using LIST view NOT column view.
Many thanksLike Jim, I also generally use Icon view for folders containing images, and have the View Option to show item info selected. Column view will also show image dimensions (both of these work, provided the folder has been indexed by Spotlight).
If you want to see the dimensions, but also want to view the folder contents in List view, the best you can do is bring up the Inspector (Command-Option-i), expand the More Info section, then move down the list using the arrow key. The Inspector pane's contents change with each new selected item, and the More Info section includes the dimensions.

Changing column width in Finder
Is it possible to permanently widen a column in Finder? I have 1000s of documents that all appear in one long list which I have to laboriously scroll through, but every time I try to find a document I have to manually widen the column so I can see the whole file name because many of them start the same. Its driving me bonkers. I also want it to do what Windows Explorer does. That is, to see my files from one folder across several columns so that I can see more of them at once without laboriously scrolling.
Darren (and Adolf too)
That thing drives me up the wall. The MacOS used to have an excellent hierarchical folder browser that only ever required one click to navigate wherever you want, and the filenames could be a mile long if you wanted them to be.
Fortunately my life has been saved by a third-party add-on called Classic Menu. GIve it a try. Suddenly your life will be approximately 85% easier and you won't get Repetitive Strain Injury from all those 24/7 mouse clicks and wrist movements.
Here it is.....

Don't ask me why Apple discontinued the hierarchical drop-down navigation menu. It's one of a number of strange, wrongheaded decisions Apple has been taking these past years. -
Is there a way to lock the Column View format, column widths in Finder so they remain the same in all Finder windows, and remain after quitting Finder and opening up a new window?
Thanks ... that worked partially for me ... it appears that all columns have to remain the same width unless you drag one column to adjust it (but doing that does not lock the width for that column for later).

How to auto fit column width?
Hi experts,
When I design a input schedule, I find a problem, some columns can auto fit column width when I input numerics, some columns can not! how can I fix my input schedule and let all column can auto fit column width?
best regard
Evans.Evans,
If you are using standard template and which is not working for 2 data ranges.
I think you can customize using VBA Macros. It is possible using Macros. I'm not sure is it BUG from SAP.
Try to put VBA code in AFTER_REFRESH i guess.
You can VBA Macro code mention below.
for Column D: Columns("D:D").EntireColumn.AutoFit
For all Columns: Cells.EntireColumn.AutoFit
For Only Data Ranges: Determine columns from data range using VBA code and use VBA code given for Column .
Thanks,

Auto size column width in repor generation toolkit
Im using RGT for excel creating tables i excel i wan to auto size the column width automatically.how to do this?
kaviBasically everything you want to do needs to be done with ActiveX. The Report Generation Toolkit does just that. If there's something you need to do that the RGT doesn't do, then you need to use Excel's object model to call the properties and methods to do what you want. This information is in the Excel documentation, not the LabVIEW documentation. Examples ship with LabVIEW on how to use ActiveX to control Excel. There have also been tons of examples posted on this forum on various operations on Excel. Search and you will find them. There are also lots of examples in the Excel thread.

Is there any way to set default column widths in the Finder's Column view
When my Finder windows open in column view, all the columns are always VERY wide. I have to then spend time resizing them to a managable width. Is there any way to set default column widths in the Finder's Column view?
<Re-Titled By Host>No, because you can't set a columns view default.
27" i7 iMac (Mid 2011) refurb, OS X Yo (10.10), Mavs, ML & SL, G4 450 MP w/10.5 & 9.2.2 -
The finder window for an external USB hard disk suddenly started separating files by time (today, yesterday, etc.) and stopped allowing me to change column width, order, etc. Also the header bar shifted to flat white from gray.
All was normal until the icon for the disk stopped showing up on the desktop when I would plug it in. I rebooted the computer, and the disk icon now shows up but this new look to the finder window started as a result. The hard disk does not have this problem when I use it on another Mac running Snow leopard. Also, two other external hard disks that I use on this computer running lion 7.4 still have the normal header bars with columns that can be reordered, etc.
I have tried looking in preferences and other places but have not seen this discussed.Well duh - I finally figured out that somehow in the View options for the hard drive, the "arrange by" option had been changed to "by date" from "none". Not sure how that happened, I had never used the "view options" menu tem before. Changing "arrange by" back to "none" gets the gray column headers and the collapsible folder icons back.

The default 'document' column is way too wide and forces you eye to track all the way across the screen to read info like "date modified', 'kind' or 'size'.
Tried several times to create a narrower default 'document name' column with no results. Couldn't find anything in preferences or view options. Tried dragging column headers while holding the down the option key with no results.
Every time I open a new finder window, all columns except the 'document' column affixed to the right side of the window. Also, when you grab the bottom right corner of a window to resize smaller, the lists become re-affixed to the right side of the window when opening the window back up.
Experiencing the same problem in Mavericks 10.9.3 on an iMac and Macbook Pro Retina.
Thanks if you've made it this far:)This was a great place for me to start
Thank you
I took profdant139's suggestions a bit further as my real goal was to have the "Document column" narrower. The goal to be able to see all the other document info that was usually hidden way out to the right
To achieve my results I right clicked in the upper bar with the column names and chose from the drop down box "comments" column (as suggested). I then dragged it to the far right. This pushed all the other columns over.
In the end of the day I ended up adding "Size" and "Date modified" columns as well to get my desired results.
Remember one can move different columns around to be in the order you need by clicking on the column to get it active and then left click and drag it to where you want
Another great thing is that by default (Using Mavericks) the date modified, opened,created columns have date and time. One can shrink them down to xx/xx/xx format by manually adjusting the column width like one does in Excel - click on column separator up top and drag
Once all that is done, at least on my box, I closed it out and opened up a new finder window and everything was as I wanted.
Thank you for the help from the above helper to get me here -
Finder List View: Maintain Column Width
OSX 10.7.3 - I prefer to use the "list view" option in Finder. With that said, I find it maddening that when I re-open Finder following a session where I had resized the column widths, I have to once again resize column width in order to see the full name of a file (instead of it being truncated.). Is there a way to set up Finder so that the columns stay resized each time I reopen a Finder window.
There's something in your Finder prefs...
I tested that and it works as expected.
Have you tried creating a new account and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.)
Open System Preferences > Accounts > "+" make it an admin account.
If this works, then log back into your problem account and Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.) -
How can i Auto Size the Column width in RDLC Report
Hi Friend's,
I have created Windows application with RDLC Report. I am binding(Generating) dynamic columns and data's in RDLC Report Using Matrix control, I need to make Auto size of Column width for each Column in
Matrix of RDLC report. So Can any one suggest me to make the Auto Size of Column Width in RDLC.
Thanks in Advance,
Mohan GHi Mohan,
In Reporting Services, the column width/height is hard-coded, hence, we cannot set the column width/height dynamically or based on an expression. So is the report size.
In addition, since it is a RDLC report, we need a ReportViewer control to display this report within a custom application. If you need to change the size of the whole report, we can set the AsyncRendering property of the ReportViewer control to false, and
set the SizeToReportContent property to true.

JTable column auto-maximum width
Hi,
Does anyone have an idea on how to make the JTable to support column auto-maximum width resize, like we always see in a microsoft's table component, you double click on the column seperater and the column resized to its maximum size according to the content in it.
Thanks
YutongHi again,
I wrote two methods to solve this kind of problem... take a look at them and tell me what you think about it...
/** Adjusts the widths of a JTable columns
* @param table the table
public static void resizeTableColumns(JTable table) {
table.setAutoResizeMode(JTable.AUTO_RESIZE_OFF);
TableColumn c = null;
FontMetrics fm = table.getFontMetrics(table.getFont());
for (int i=0; i<table.getColumnCount(); i++) {
c = table.getColumn(table.getColumnName(i));
c.setPreferredWidth(determineColumnWidth(c, table.getModel(), fm));
/** Returns the preferred width of a JTable column. The resulting width
* is 5 pixels wider than the biggest column
* @param col the column
* @param model the table model
* @param fm the font metrics
public static int determineColumnWidth(TableColumn col, TableModel model,
FontMetrics fm) {
String value = (String)col.getHeaderValue();
int headerWidth = fm.stringWidth("." + value.trim() + ".");
int columnNumber = col.getModelIndex();
int max = headerWidth;
int columnWidth = 0;
int nrows = model.getRowCount();
String cell = "";
for (int i=0; i<nrows; i++) {
value = (String)model.getValueAt(i, columnNumber);
columnWidth = fm.stringWidth("." + value.trim() + ".");
if (columnWidth > max) max = columnWidth;
return max + 5; -
Auto adjust column width in multicolumn listbox
Hi
May I know, does multicolumn listbox has a function / control to auto adjust the column width? If not, how can I solve this problem, as user could not view the full data if the width that I set is too small. It would be annoying if the user need to adjust it manually each time they get the data from database....
Any advise??? TQQQQQ......Hello 222,
I've already seen a few threads about "auto adjust multi-column listbox column width", as far as I can remember, there is not such option in LV 7.1 (I don't know about LV 8).
Meanwhile I think there are option that can allow the user the modify column width at runtime. This plus an horizontal scrollbar should be the alternative... I know it is not "perfect" for the user.
You also have the possibility to do a function that will compare the string length to the column width, and to programatically increase the width if needed.
Personnaly I wouldn't go for this but this is your choice

Permanently Widen Finder View Column Width
I am familiar with the method to get a full/wider view of a Finder column when I'm there, but the column width goes back to its original width when the Finder is closed. Any way that anyone knows to set and maintain a wide column view after closing Finder?
It should remain at the size where you left it.
Maybe some fuzz in Finder prefs.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash com.apple.finder.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You might have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
