Auto complete of email address

Every time I put in my email address in a field I get a crazy substitute for my address! I thought that frequently used addresses would be remembered. Please help me solve this mystery....very, very frustrating.  Thanks;0)

It doesn't just use addresses from Contacts, it uses addresses that have been used in sending and receiving emails over a period of time.
Several people have sent feedback requesting that this info should be made erasable as it can become a bit of a pain after a while.

  • Mail won't auto complete Exchange email addresses after Lion

    Hi there. I tried to lookup a solution for this problem on the support communities but wasn't able to. Since upgrading to Lion, the auto complete feature for email addresses in my University Exchange server won't work. Mail only completes addressees contained locally in my Mac. The feature worked fine with Snow Leopard and continues to work on both my iPhone and iPad. It's worth noting that setting up the exchange server itself wasn't a straight forward task either as the auto setup didn't work and I had to enter the exchange server address manually in Mail. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

    The screenshot below is from SL, not Lion, but see if you can find something similar to this.
    In Mail prefs, click on 'Composing', and look for the 'Configure LDAP' button. Click on that and add your server with the little '+' button.

  • Disabling auto-complete on corp address book

    Is there a way to disable auto-complete on corp address book on a per user basis?

    LDAP attribute for a per-user option:
    sunUCExtendedUserPrefs: corpDirAutoCompleteEnabled=true/false
    Per-user preference (option), if present overrides the system-wide setting.So it does. Unfortunately there is no way for the end-user to change this setting via the default Convergence interface.
    I've logged an RFE to have an option added however I still don't understand what the use-case is:

  • When sending email messages from iPhone,iMac, or iPad, email address automatically added to my contacts list on iPhone.  How do I trace this down and stop this auto addition of email addresses to my contacts list?

    I am not sure what generates the email address as a contact, be it the iPhone or iMac.  I use iCloud to sync up my contacts/address book.  This appears to happen when I am using Mac Mail on my iMac,  but I have no clue where to begin to look to stop this auto addition.  I have looked in Mail preferences on my iMac and in my iPhone settings, but have found nothing that "automatically add email address to contacts list".
    Can anyone provide guidance?  Web search has been fruitless ( I am guessing I am not using the right key words for my search).

    Hey jpoolewarren!
    You can delete contacts by following the instructions in this link:
    Contacts at a glance - iPhone
    http://help.apple.com/iphone/7/#/iph3e0ca2db
    Delete a contact.  Go to the contact’s card, then tap Edit. Scroll down, then tap Delete Contact.

  • Auto prefill of email address

    I recently had a friend of mine change thier email address so I updated my contacts.  However, I notice that when I starte to send them an email the auto prefill gives me the old and new address to choose from.  Is there a way to make the old email go away forever?

    The only way to get rid of that remembered email address when using the mail app - is to restore to factory settings. Unfortunately - Apple has made no provision to let the user delete those old email addresses.
    If you want to be one of the many, many users who have sent feedback to Apple about this feature - or lack thereof - do so here.

  • How can I clear the stored auto-complete e-mail addresses in Thunderbird, without clearing everything?

    In the auto-complete of e-mail addresses, old invalid addresses keep appearing in this list that are not in any address book (any more).
    How can I delete one from the list, or perhaps all?
    (Thunderbird v31, Dutch)

    The only place that Thunderbird gets suggested addresses is from your address books. I have seen some not show up in the books because some key info was never stored when the contact was saved.
    Sometimes you can start a new message and when the bad contact shows up select it. Create the message and save it to drafts. Then you can go to the Draft folder open the draft message by right clicking and select Open Message in Tab. Then click the star to the right of the contact and it will open the contact edit button. From there you can delete the contact.
    This does not always work though.

  • Auto-fill in email address hangs up when i start with letter 'a'

    No problem with other letters.... tried all the solutions on CNET blog  (re-imported address book, got rid of previous recipients list, made some library changes, etc.), all very carefully... but when i type the letter 'a' (as a first letter) the system acts like it is cataloguing or searching, BUT this does not happen on any other letter.  AND it happens even if it is a second or third name in the address line that starts with 'a'.  What could this be?  Something corrupt in the import of old addressed from my old macbook to my new one?   many thanks.

    I'm having the same issue. I have an old email address I want to delete from the "previously sent email cache" and not sure how to do it, or if it's even possible.
    You can clear Safari's cache on iPhone but not Mail.app's it seems. (you can in OS X though)
    There should be a clear cache option in Prefs, no?
    Maybe on the next update?
    I'm sure it's pretty low on the list for Apple.

  • Can You still Auto CC an email address with Z10?

    On all of my previous Blackberry's I would auto cc my email so that it would always show up on my desktop in Outlook, but I can't see how to do that on my Z10.

    robpetro wrote:
    Seems strange you could do it with the old Blackberry's and not the latest and greatest?
    Correct. But your new Z10 does not run on the same old BIS servers from BlackBerry.
    Check your email server for those options... most likely its there.

  • How can I get back Mail Auto-Complete email addresses?

    After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my Mail no longer works with the auto-complete of email address.
    My Contacts.app works fine, it just seems that Mail is no longer able to 'read' from my Contacts.
    I use iCloud and everything was great for years.  Mail preferences is set to Auto-Complete email address from my Contacts.
    Not sure how the problem started, but I launched Mail on a 2nd computer  - on the same iCloud.
    Shortly after I did that, my 1st Mac no longer auto-completes email.  I'm unsure if that is what set off the problem.
    Also, I 'did' read Tom Nelson's article which did not work since it's not an 'alias' problem:
    http://macs.about.com/od/MacTroubleshootingTips/qt/What-To-Do-When-Mountain-Lion -Mail-Fails-To-Auto-Complete-Email-Addresses.htm
    Also, there doesn't appear to be a com.apple.mail.plist preferences file I can even delete in Mountain Lion.
    I use Dropbox, but have never it to sync Addresses, Calendar, etc.
    Any help greatly appreciated!

    I had the same issue. After reading this solution I started poking around in the Container folder and found that there was a symlink for AddressBook that was messed up which was causing the problem. In ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Application Support I ran:
    $ cd ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Application\ Support
    $ ls -lh
    AddressBook -> ??/???7??ʪ?????VT???;??\G[?:??:??????T?_Ү??
    CrashReporter
    Mail
    SyncServices -> ../../../../../Application Support/SyncServices
    iCloud -> ../../../../../Application Support/iCloud
    Seeing the aliases for SyncServices and iCloud, I guessed correctly that I just needed to recreate the AddressBook alias to point to the right place. So I just removed the alias for AddressBook, recreated it, restarted Mail, and it worked perfectly. (Note: I did the following to remove the alias, and recreate it. You should confirm what you are removing is an alias. You should also always make sure you have a backup.)
    $ cd ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Application\ Support
    $ rm AddressBook
    $ ln -s ../../../../../Application\ Support/AddressBook AddressBook
    Obviously, DrewSchatt's  original solution to this works as well, but this way you don't have to delete the whole folder, resetting your preferences and possibly delete something else important (only recreating the alias, not deleting any files or data).

  • Tiger Mail to Leopard Mail - Auto Complete Addresses?

    Hi there,
    I've recently backed up my friend's complete Home folder from Tiger, along with all other Tiger assets required to hopefully make a smooth migration to Leopard.
    NERD SCENARIO:
    Apple Mail: My friend relied heavily on "Automatically complete addresses" in Apple Mail, otherwise known as Automatic Addressing, aka: auto complete TO: email addresses when typing a name. Unfortunately, when migrating to Leopard, he has now lost auto addressing after I migrated his old email (Inbox, Sent, Deleted, etc.) He's savvy, but not savvy enough to know to add his recipients to his Apple Address Book -- therefore Leopard Mail is only auto completing recent mail within this past week. I'm now trying to inform him to begin adding people to his Address Book so this doesn't happen again -- but it might be too late? He used to rely heavily on Auto Addressing to remember email addresses prior.
    TRANSLATION:
    1. How can I pull date or history from my backed up Mail folder from Tiger to import back into Leopard so "Auto Addressing" will remember email addresses prior?
    2. Did I not backup his mail correctly? I burned an almost exact mirror of his hard drive to a DVD.
    3. Has he lost his ability to auto address old email addresses? Since he didn't add them to his Address Book?
    Thanks for any help!

    I just did the same thing, transferring all my data from Tiger to a new Leopard MacBook Pro, and now I can't access ANY of my addresses from my old address book, even tho I can see all the data sitting in Library... How the heck do I get the hundreds of addresses into my new address book? And, why won't my new Mail pick up all the Auto-Complete addresses from the old program if I transferred everything over?

  • Importing mass email addresses into Address Book?

    My boss just got a new Blackberry and wants to sync her contacts. Unfortunately, she is not very good at making address book entries.
    Is there a way to quickly import any email address into Address Book? She doesn't need the everything edited with name, address, etc...since she knows most of these people by their email address more than their first/last names!

    They aren't located anywhere. She has all her email messages archived in Mail.app for the last 3 years so she'd like to extract them from there.
    Is there some kind of built-in email address list in Mail.app, because it seems to auto complete any email address she types despite it not being in the Apple address book app.

  • Mail address auto complete???

    On the 3G with OS 2.2 when you started an email address, say with the letter M, up would come the most used addresses that started with M.
    Now with 3Gs and OS 3.0, when you start with M, up comes contacts I have never sent an email to at all.
    Any idea what happened? is this a setting somewhere? a bug?
    It certainly make emailing a LOT more difficult in the new OS
    thanks for any tips....
    tom

    I am having a problem with auto-complete in email as well. With OS 2.2, if I typed "M", it would take a split second before names or email addresses in the "M" category would pop-up. Now, after the OS 3.0 upgrade, if I compose an email and type "M", it takes 4-5 seconds before the list of "M" contacts pops-up. This annoys the heck out of me!!! I feel like I stepped back in time.
    I have three email accounts: One exchange, and two Yahoo accounts. Any suggestions welcome!!!
