Auto correct list gone?

One of the most endearing abilities of Pages from the beginning was its ability to create a custom list of automatically-correcting shortcuts. The January 14 update seems to have eliminated it.
I used to be able to have the text string "dof" replace itself automatically with "depth of field" in my writing, but I don't see how to implement that any more, except through the system preference Keyboard > Text > Replace / With process.
I had a great many entries in there, but the new method doesn't see or respect them.
Is there a quick key shortcut that would open this page for quick entries while I write?
Is there a way to put my previous list into the new Replace / With page?
What bone head  misinformed non writer  newbie  jerk committee decided to eject this most-helpful utility from Pages, anyhow?

Ditto this question. I am (almost) a lawyer and this was one of the handiest features when writing briefs, memos, etc.
This feature is a MUST.
If it doesn't come back I will buy something else that does. I don't want to buy Microsoft Office, but I will if I have to. (Yes Apple, I dropped the M-word, I hope that gets your attention.)

The Auto Correct function is now the System Auto Correct in System preferences.
You will need to re-create your list unfortunately.

  • Lost all my iWork 08 auto-correction data - is it still hidden somewhere?

Having spent a year or more adding my custom auto-correction list to Pages 08, I upgraded to iWork 09 and deleted 08 - only then realising that the auto-correction data didn't come across (which is a bit daft iWork Team!) Is there a way of getting it back into 09? Unfortunately I used AppDelete so the app deletion is fairly thought
    Thanks.

I was not writing about a full backup but about a backup of preferences files.
In My Preferences folder, I created a subfolder entitled: "safe_Prefs"
It contains copies of some important preferences files:
    the AppleWorks ones,
    the iWork 's ones
the charPalette one with my Favourite page.
Given that, at startup time (every morning) a script copy these prefs in the true location.
So, I always start a session with clean preferences and if for some reason I destroy an 'in use' file, I may replace it easily
Of course, I have also a copy on an other device.
I didn't understood what AppDelete does.
I thought that it was an eraser to remove entirely trashed files.
Thanks to Peggy I understood that it's a tool removing every files linked to a program.
    It's really a dangerous tool.
I hope that it doesn't remove the custom templates folder

  • Where is a full list of text substitutions/auto-correct?

I use TextEdit a lot, and I love the Snow Leopard automatic text substitution feature, but I'm struggling to find where I can edit the list of what it corrects.
When I type "teh", I love that it corrects it to "the". That's great.
But I often use the abbreviation "ppl" for "people" when making notes, and under Snow Leopard, TextEdit keeps automatically correcting it to "pp.", which is not what I want.
When I go to System Prefs > Language & Text > Text, I see a short list of substitutions, including "teh", "(c)", and "1/2", but I don't see anything like "ppl" or any of the other words it auto-corrects. Am I missing another list somewhere? Is there a way to change this behavior?
    Thanks in advance!

Yeah, but the problem with adding your own customized sub is that it always doesn't work. At least in Mail. I tried to substitute a semicolon with an apostrophe. I accidentally hit the semicolon instead of the apostrophe all the time. (Instead of "can't" I type "can;t"). In a new Mail message with the customized sub enabled, hitting the semicolon key locks Mail up with the spinning beach ball. I have to force quit it every time. The canned subs work fine & not sure if another customized sub would work. This was one I was hoping to use. Guess not!

  • Spell Checker errors & auto-correct gone mad

I have had a problem for awhile now with bad spell checking.
If I make a typo, the softeware learns the mispelled word - and edits properly spelled instances of the word to be wrong later.
    ("the softeware" - I don't know if its Apple's or a 3rd party's).
I am getting "Teh" errors, transpositions & complete case changes, for example words ending in "-ed" being changed
to "-ing" endings here & there. A few other recurring ones, as well.
Its acting like a keylogger associated with firmware in the darn keyboard!
I've run checks for spyware & keyloggers & they came up negative.
I can't tell if its in the core OS softeware, or being driven by a third party test drive.
I can't seem to shut off enough spell checking to solve the problem.
Example: the "e" in softeware above was an autocorrect, not what I typed & saw typed.
The corrections are more than "ie" & "ei" transpositions & sometimes involved letters across the keyboard.
Any ideas or solutions for this? Am I the only person with this problem?
(I tried to find a close enough topic, but they were either old & archived, or not really quite my issue).

How do you mean "don't know what software I'm using?"
If the phenomenon occurs across most apps that are word intensive, then it appears not to be tied to any one.
Something is recognizing a problem not there & "correcting" it, because I can see it happen & its not all due to operator error typos.
I gather there's predominantly one spell checker engine across most applications, not one for each, if the symptoms are broad. IF that can be pinned on a "spellcheck" function. It isn't strictly a spellcheck.
"Substitutions" yes is more accurate than calling it true spellchecking & I might be rmisrepresenting the phenomenon to call it that.
Whatever is causing it, is learning & auto-correcting words that were may or may not be wrong. 2 letter pairs is mostly what happens. Or a capitalization of the 2nd letter in a word, to match the first letter: "IT" paired at the beginning of a sentence is a common manifestation.
I can't find anything that could be left from an uninstalled test driven application.
Your pointing to "Language & Text" may be valuable. The "ie" & "ei" substitutions are fairly common & German was one of the language options turned on, along with French & Italian – although I'm not sure what that panel even controls. I'm removing all options except English.
I haven't seen a lot about this kind of thing on here, so I am assuming that its rare & likely something not part of the Apple suite of applications. I'm simply trying to narrow down what's going on.

  • Clearing Safari History still leaves URL auto-correct history

I tried deleting the browsing history on my iPad in order to purge the URL history.  This only appears to have deleted the list of sites from the bookmarked history button though, and not the browser's address bar history.  So, when I type just a single letter in the address bar of safari, it still displays all of the historical URLs I've been to in the past.
Is there any way of deleting the URL auto-correct history and starting fresh?
Also, I assume browsing in "private mode" does not save the URLs into that list?

    Try this:
    1) Go to Settings --> Safari
    2) Change your search engine (switch from Google to Yahoo! or vice versa)
    3) Tap Home button
    4) Tap Safari
    5) Go to Settings --> Safari
    6) Tap the following sequentially: Clear History, Clear Cookies, Clear Cache
    7) Change your search engine back to what it was originally
    8) Tap Home button
    9) Launch Safari and verify search history is gone.
Note: This will not clear bookmarked sites.

  • Why did Word on Office 2013 REMOVE Auto Correct from Right-Click Context Menu??

    Hi Microsoft -
I normally don't rant, but this is a killer feature removal, and the reason given is for aesthetics - 'Removal of clutter" is how it's worded here:
    [Changes in Office 2013]
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178954(en-us).aspx
I copy n pasted below the operative row from the linked TechNet page as to the reason WHY this critical (and very popular feature) has been removed from Microsoft Office 2013 Word's context-menu: LESS CLUTTER
And your answer is ambiguous and doesn't solve the issue that you created to make things prettier: "Click the AutoCorrect Options button" Then what?  ADD EACH WORD MANUALLY?
Please advise ALL OF US that want this feature back how to have our commonly misspelled words fixed and added automatically to the dictionary.  If I am missing this in a major way somehow, I apologize completely and will issue a public apology via any
social media platform of your choice.  If it really is gone, and I have to manually add the entries into a buried table 6-clicks deep, then I will issue a public excoriation of this feature on as many social platforms of my choice.
    Sincerely,
    Maximus Mednick

    Modifying the feature
Auto-Correct and certain formatting tools are no longer available from the spelling error context menu.
To make Word 2013 cleaner and less cluttered, we removed AutoCorrect and certain formatting tools from the spelling error context menu. The features are still available in Word 2013 through other entry points within the Word user interface.
Less clutter in the spelling error context menu. This enables users to find popular commands more quickly. In addition, the spelling error context menu now fits better on the screen.
To change AutoCorrect options, do the following:
Choose File -> Options -> Proofing
    Choose the AutoCorrect Options button.

Microsoft used to be about allowing users to customize the OS and apps however they want. This was one reason I have always preferred Windows over Mac. There are 5 ways to do any one thing, and you can customize it to do it however you want. It's all about
user choice. Please don't go the way of Apple and force users into the way that you *think* we should do things.
    <rant>
While I whole heartedly agree with this suggestion, if you look through this blog about the design decisions that went into the 2007 ribbon:
Jensen Harris: An Office User Interface Blog -
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jensenh/archive/2008/03/12/table-of-contents.aspx
You'll see that one of the considerations of the ribbon was to ELIMINATE/REDUCE customization because it was costing large corporate customers too much time/money to support their users with 2003 customized menu/toolbars.  In other words, the ribbon
was intentionally built as a fixed design so that average user cannot change it.  The QAT was an afterthought, a sop, to allow users minimal customization.
They found that the 2007 lock down was too much of a "good thing", too much like the good old "IBM 360 green screen" (even if most people don't recognize the reference), so in 2010 they
re-introduced limited Ribbon customization within the UI.
But you still can't customize the default tabs. And to add injury to insult, if you do want to customize a default tab and go to the effort of trying to recreate the default tabs and groups
within the Ribbon UI, you'll eventually find that YOU CAN'T'! There is no way inside the UI to force the buttons to layout the same way! AHHH!
    Even in 2007,
EXPERTS have had the option of creating custom Ribbons/tabs by editing XML, but that is pretty serious programming, out of scope for 99% of users.
The "solution" to the problem was too simple. Just add an option to allow users to turn on the old menu UI.  Even if it had been buried as a registry hack, the people who really wanted it would have learned about it. Then MS could have collected statistics
on usage that would have "proved" that the menu was preferred over the ribbon.  The thing is, if the ribbon was defaulted "out of the box", over time people would eventually all switch over to it. Simply because it was the default, because MS only produced
new training material referring for the ribbon
Now, I'll concede that the ribbon really may be more "intuitive", but only for new users. For long time users the change is very jarring.
They made the same choice with Windows 8.  In the last Windows 8 consumer Preview there was a registry hack to bypass the Start Screen.  I learned about it in July or August. But MS was so sure the Start screen/metro was the only way to go they
rushed out a Windows Update to eliminate that registry entry. And it was eliminated from the RTM version.
    WHY?
Why did they remove the user's right to chose the UI that worked best for them? I don't know.
</end rant>  sorry, this is a hot button for me.

When typing in the name of a contact I want to message, a list of addresses appears as an auto-complete/auto-fill list.

  • Turning off auto-correction in pages 5.0???

Preferences used to have an "auto-correction" section where you could change the  "symbol and text substitution" settings but I cannot figure out how to do that now -- or if I even can -- and would really appreciate some help. Thanks! As a reference, here's what preferences used to look like (ignore the arrow, borrowed a screen grab from another thread):

Fruhulda, thanks for the response. I see "Language and Region" in system preferences and within that, "Keyboard" and within that, "text" but no longer see a list similar to the screen grab I included earlier -- of substitutions. For example if I don't want (c) to automatically become ©, there's nowhere to un-tick that box like before.

  • FYI: Confirmed flaw with Outlook Auto-Complete lists w/Exchange Online

Ever since our organization migrated to Exchange Online we noticed a flaw with how Outlook's Auto Complete list (nickname cache) operates.  We've finally gotten a confirmation from Microsoft that the following is indeed a problem:
Each entry in a user's local Outlook auto-complete cache is represented by an LDAP distinguished name.
When Exchange is hosted on-premises these entries pretty much never change.
When your organization is hosted on Exchange Online, the distinguished names for your mailboxes can change without notice due to maintenance processes (Microsoft's engineers have confirmed this to be true).
There are other ways that a mailbox's distinguished name can change (re-creating a mailbox, etc.)
Outlook's local auto-complete cache has no way (currently) to reconcile changes should any of its entries' distinguished names change in the cloud.
When the entries in the local auto-complete cache become "stale" the following may happen:
Emails to affected recipients can bounce back.
Emails to distribution groups containing members which have stale auto-complete entries can bounce back.
On occasion no NDR is even generated (BIG PROBLEM).
As noted above, we've gotten Microsoft to admit that this is indeed a problem with Outlook when combined with Exchange Online. I was told that the Outlook product team has been notified of this problem.  However, in order to escalate this issue I was
asked to spread the word to other customers so they can also chime in if they've been affected.
Please supply your feedback to Microsoft and ask that Outlook be enhanced to either reconcile the local auto-complete list with the online GAL, or provide some sort of notification to the user that an auto-complete entry has become "stale" or invalid.
    Thanks for everyone's time!

    Hi,
There is nothing called as Outlook's local nick-name cache. This resides on the mailbox and not outlook and supports only 1000 entries only. If the entries exceeds 1000 it will not function correctly.
After the .nk2 file has been imported into your mailbox, Outlook writes a value into a hidden message in your mailbox.
To locate this property in MFCMAPI, open the
Associated Contents table of the Contacts folder. Then, select the message with
    Subject = IPM.Configuration.ContactPrefs.
Then, double-click the PR_ROAMING_DICTIONARY property to see the configuration setting nickname cache import. The value to examine is
pImportedContactNickNames (True = the import has already occurred).
Since you are facing issues at this point of time, it needs to be corrected. I would appreciate if you can open phone support case with O 365 team and ask them to escalate to Exchange Level , we should be able to work with
    you and correct the issue
    Hope this helps
    Thanks

  • Please can someone tell me how to swtch off the auto correct spell check option?

Can someone please explain to me how to turn off the auto spell check option? the one when it auto corrects? thanks! im desperate!

I believe that you turn off that spelling feature in the individual program that you use. Go to the edit menu of the application being used and see if there is a spelling feature listed. If there isn't, it may be that this feature is an integral part of the application and is located in the preferences, and you'll find it there. This would need to be done for each program you want to use that is bothering you with auto spelling correction. I don't believe there's a general setting for autocorrect that works across programs.

  • Can't turn off auto correct

Im having trouble with turning my auto correct off.
I just updated to yosemite, and i can't turn off the auto correct.
I've gone into settings > keyboard > Text > and un ticked the auto correct box, but it will not stop auto correcting.
Ive had this problem with my previous version of OS X as well.
anyone got any suggestions? i do a lot of typing with abbreviations, and its changing things all the time.

Since I updated my iPad to iOS 5 - spell check works erratically and sporadically as well so I have issues with the way this whole thing works.
Have you tried resetting the Keyboard Dictionary? Settings>General>Reset>Reset Keyboard Dictionary. It is a totally different setting that really shouldn't impact auto correct all - its merely a suggestion borne out of the "Throw enough crap against the wall and hope that something will stick" mentality.
If nothing else works, another standard procedure would be to restore your iPad. If you can restore from a backup that predates this issue, that should work for you.
