Auto correct when typing

When typing in iPhone, does the phone recognise certain words after a while? For example, it seems to have stopped trying to correct me when I spell through as thru.

Yes, that's how it works.

  • Can I shut off auto-correct when typing text messages

When I am typing a text message, my phone auto corrects.  Is there a way to shut this feature off?

You can turn it off but it will be off for all uses on the phone, not just text messages. The on/off control is in Settings > General > Keyboard

  • Undo auto-correction for typing particular words into Pages

This is starting to drive me nuts - whenever I type the word "march" Pages automatically capitalizes it to "March". Is there any way to stop it from capitalizing this word without turning off auto capitalizing?
I realise it may sound trivial but I am using this word a fair bit and it just takes up time having to constantly go back and correct it, then I have to be careful not to change the sentence or it auto-corrects back again.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

(K_Gal: This primarily addresses RHPC's issue, but does include some comments regarding yours)
    B
    RHPC:
Yours is a different issue than that described in the initial post in this thread.
Pages has several auto-correction features, all set in the auto-correction pane of Pages Preferences. The two indicated by the arrows are the significant ones in this thread as started and in your hijack of this thread.
Fix capitalization (blue arrow) applies a format (CAPITAL or UPPER) to the initial letters of 'sentences' and words identified as 'proper nouns' (such as "March") in the spelling dictionary. It performs no action on 'words' that have been typed with initial capitals.
In the examples above, the first two lines were typed with 'Fix capitalization' unchecked. The second pair of lines were typed using exactly the same keystrokes as the first, but with 'Fix capitalization' checked. Note that both occurrences of 'will' are the same in each set.
"Automatically use spell checker suggestions" (red arrow) does precisely what it says: If a 'word' is not found in the spelling dictionary, the spell checker will make a 'best guess' and suggest that as a possible replacement. If the 'Automatically use…" box is checked, then Pages will immediately accept the first suggestion, replacing the 'questionable word' with the spell checkers first ('best') suggestion.
There are at least two solutions to this issue:
Uncheck the box and don't use auto-correction. (works for either of these issues)
Teach the spellchecker the correct spelling of the Polish name. (does not work in the case of march/March, which is part of the base dictionary)
    To do this:
Go Pages (menu) > Preferences... Auto-Correction
    Uncheck the "Automatically use…" box.
    Close Preferences
Open a new Pages word processing document.
    Type the Polish name.
Ensure that the spelling and capitalization is correct.
Right click on the name and choose Learn Spelling.
    Go Pages > Preferences… Auto-Correction
    Recheck the "Automatically use…" box
    Close Preferences.
    Done.
Pages (and other applications using the system's spell checker dictionary) will now recognize the spelling of this name and will not 'correct' it.
(K_Gal: Unfortunately, when I tried this on "march" the contextual menu did not include the Learn Spelling option , probably because the dictionary already 'knew' how to spell "March". I'd suggest using the Provide Pages Feedback item in the Pages message to report this to apple, and request a feature enhancement to the Fix capitalization feature.)

  • Colour of the Background Picture and auto correction while typing

    Hey
since 2,5 weeks i own an iPad. I really like it, there are only two things i dislike:
    1. I changed the background Picture:http://kitecoach.co.uk/images/categories_desc/photos/big/originals/kitesurf5med. jpeg
I like the bright colours. But at the lower end, the sand becomes much darker when used as background while the colours of the sky and the kites are normal. It's really annoying, why do the colours at the lower end of the picture change and how to stop it?
    2. Is there a possibility to turn off the auto correction?
    Thanks for the answers

That is done with every picture on the home screen, there is no way to stop the iPad doing that… you can work around with a graphics tool - select the lower portion and make it brighter. And scale it down… the size on the web is 4288 × 2848, the iPad has 1024 x 768…

  • Problem : Auto Correction when Text Messaging

Ok so i have an iphone 4 and I used it recently on a message board forum. i wanted to respond to a user that posted something and i typed " ^^^^ yea "
well not anytime i text message anyone and want to write "yea" it auto corrects to " ^^^^ yea"
i want to keep auto correct on (to fix typos etc) but i dont want the ^^^^ yea everytime i want to text "yea"
    any help ????

Go to Settings, General, Keyboard, Add New Shortcut and type the phrase and the shortcut you use to type the word. For example, ab would be about. You can go back and delete the shortcuts if you don't want them later.

  • Thunderbird: Auto returning when typing message

    Ahoy!
I'm hoping this will be a quick fix. When I type a message in Thunderbird, after about 80 characters the cursor is auto returning to the left and starting another line, hence I'm getting a paragraphed message block that isn't using the whole of the available text box across the whole screen! I have no idea why this is happening, but I hope it may just be a setting correction. Here's a sample of what it's doing (I've just used any characters to show as an example:
    rtrwrwyryr y rttywywy ywyywywywey ryeyeey reryeyt3tet 454y45yury y4y44yuy 5yreyryrry y4y4577587 567575i67 i ll7i68u3446 455746644y5y4 y466yryyuu y4646 n 47464644646464646464 747474 464yy g 4y4y yuyuy5y 332336 ii6i645433 46463636363n 3336363 43646 464646.
Thunderbird is limiting the number of characters I can use and then auto returns. Is there a technophone that can help to correct this phenomenon? It would be really appreciated ;o)

This may not be a good idea. See [*] for some reasons. Some of your recipients may see your text all on one line and have to scroll.
Better IHMO is to keep the default of all "wrap" configs in Config Editor except <br>
    <code>mail.compose.wrap_to_window_width</code> <br>
which you would toggle to true if you don't like the wrapping while composing a message.
Or, if you want to send mails in HTML most of the time ([http://email.about.com/od/netiquettetips/qt/When-In-Doubt-Send-Plain-Text-Email-Not-Fancy-Html.htm don't if you are not sure]), then in ''Account Settings > Composition & Addressing'' check ''Compose messages in HTML format'' in which case the cursor won't auto return either.
[*] e. g. http://mailformat.dan.info/body/linelength.html older, but sill mostly quite valid

  • How to disable auto lookup when typing in address

I don't like the new automatic lookup that happens when I type a web address. For example, if I start typing google.com it comes up with new.google.com. I don't want it to search within the text. I am not one of those people who thinks the address is a search box. I know what address I want to go to. I don't use bookmarks. I just want it to start with the letters I type in (except www).
If I type goo it should come up with www.google.com but not new.google.com.

    HI Gregg,
About the only thing you can do for the time being to avoid this is use Private Browsing which you can enable from the Safari Menu Bar. Click Safari/Private Browsing. Safari won't remember pages you visit, search history or your AutoFill information from which Safari fetches data from when you type a url in the address bar.
    Providing feedback here will help.

  • Having Mail save all my corrections when typing an email??

I have G-Mail and use Apple Mail service to read and write e-mails and since upgrading to Mavricks; Every correction I make to an e-mail is constantly being SAVED and if I have edited the text of the email it's being save which in turn slows down my Email and overfills my Trash folder and clogs up the Mail servers constantly...
Does anybody know why this is happening and how I can turn this OFF?? It's driving me crazy and I have to delete around 150 saved versions of an email on every email I type and edit.

System preferences: Keyboard > text tab > uncheck automatic spelling correction

  • Deleting/ changing auto-completion when typing a web page

When I start to type a web page in the address bar (just www... etc.), a list of old bookmarks comes up, which I don't want. Is there a way to delete or reset these (e.g. a Library file that can be deleted), or a setting somewhere in Preferences that I can change?
    Safari 4.0.3
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Greetings,
Contrary to the advice from Carolyn, AutoFill has nothing to do with your problem. When you begin to enter a web address, Safari will suggest possible matches based on your bookmarks and your browsing history. The only way to avoid this is to have no bookmarks and no history, but that seems a bit extreme.
You can also just press the spacebar before you start entering the web address; that will also suppress the autocomplete feature for that entry.

  • Spelling auto-correct on Lumia 1520

I have upgraded to Phone 8.1 and really like it. I am reading about the new features and one talks about Auto-correct as you type a message. My phone does not do this which I like a lot as prevents the dreded auto correct errors, but I see nowhere any way to enable Auto Correct. Is there a way to turn it on and off?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

nether of these two answers solve the problem. I tried both but still see no option to turn on/off the option to auto correct spelling. The spelling does auto correct when you use Shape Writing and it is wrong with names manily but I never get any word that auto corrects when typing in words.
I want to be clear, I do not want the phone to auto correct but would like to know where (if there is one) a place to turn it on or off.
    Thanks for the replies.

  • Turn off auto-correction selectively ?

I really like the auto correction of typing - sometimes. Other times it is totally annoying. (The worst for me is that my name is Mitch and it always "corrects" it to Match and then I have to retype it.). I wish there were a way to tell it to NOT correct certain words and have it remember. Is there anything like that? Thanks.

    It learns.
Type "Mitch" and when then blue x pops with "Match", up, tap it. Do this a few times and it will learn "Mitch".

I don't know about the first letter cap but the spelling is simple. Edit - Spelling and Grammar - Select While Typing and Correct Spelling Automatically.

  • Ipod touch - auto correction / word completion when typing ...

    (ipod touch 16GB; Firmware 2.0)
I would like to switch off the auto completion / auto correction, because its moth bothersome when i'm typing notes or writing emails. Is there anyway to switch this off?

When an autocorrection pops up and you want to use it, just type a space, punctuation mark, or return character.
    From page 28 of http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPod_touch_3.1_UserGuide.pdf
    Accept or reject dictionary suggestions:
To reject the suggested word, finish typing the word as you want it, then tap the “x” to dismiss the suggestion before typing anything else. Each time you reject a suggestion for the same word, iPod touch becomes more likely to accept your word.
To use the suggested word, type a space, punctuation mark, or return character.
