Auto correcting my name

I like the auto correction option, but my name is "Rob" and on the keyboard that is one key off from "Ron" so when I type Rob it often auto corrects to Ron which is confusing to people I send txt and email to and annoying to me. Is there a way I can overrule that particular setting? (it doesn't auto-correct from Ron to Rob however).

You dismiss a suggestion by tapping on the little box which pops up with the alternative in it. If you do that it will soon stop suggesting it. If you type a space instead, you accept the suggestion.
I keep dismissing it eventually it does stop, but then it seems almost at random it starts up again.
It did save me from legal troubles however. I suggested to fiends that we ron a bank, as ron was not available we went for coffee instead.
Here are some statistics. I found them on the internets so they have to be accurate.
ROBERT is the #3 most common male first name
3.143% of males in the US are named ROBERT.
RONALD is the #21 most common male first name
0.725% of males in the US are named RONALD.
I submit this as proof that the name Rob rules, and name Ron is lame (sorry Ron).
It seems to me that the name Ron should auto correct to Rob.

  • Auto correct email name

When I send an email via iPhone 4 through my Yahoo account, it auto-corrects my name as it appears to recipients in the "From" field.

In the Settings menu, try going into Reset --> Reset Keyboard Dictionary.  This resets all the previous spelling corrections and starts fresh.

  • How can I get auto correct to recognize a name used very often? It is in my address book but auto correct does t recognize it?

How can I get auto correct on my iPhone 4 to recognize a name that is already in my address book? It doesn't recognize it and offers no suggestions.

The cleanest way to get things straight now and as you proceed into the future with Time Machine is to start over. If the new machine is setup the way you want and has all the data placed onto it I suggest you erase and re-format the TM backup device and start a Full initial TM backup.
I believe this will pay dividends now and over time and avoid future problems for you. Jst before going to bed crank up the Full TM backup and it will be all done by morning time.

  • Text auto-correct grabbing words from gmail / etc.

I'm not sure if this is a Gingerbread issue, but this is a problem that I was introduced to when I got my Xperia PLAY.
The on-screen QWERTY keyboard lends itself to frequent typos.  Since I started using the Xperia, the auto-correct dictionary has been automatically synced and populated with various words that it apparently grabbed out of my gmail, email, contacts, address book, or elsewhere.   This includes names, segments of email addresses, already misspelled words, etc.
This has made the auto-correct function useless on my phone, and makes text messaging a convoluted and futile chore that' I'd simply rather not do.
For example, when I'm trying to send a text to someone asking them, "what time?"  -- I commonly typo "time" as "timr."
Now, auto-correct on my Xperia always wants to change "timr" into "TimeBomb4321" -- which is a segment of an email address out of my address book.
And, there's apparently no way to turn this off.
There's no way to toggle this under "Accounts & sync."
"User Dictionary" under Settings only includes words that I have manually added to it.
    HOW DO I FIX THIS???

    Hi chuckk,
I understand the importance of having a streamlined text experience.  I would suggest deleting some of the auto-saved words from the dictionary. Settings>Language & Keyboard>User Dictionary.  Press on hold the word you no longer want and the select delete.  I am hopeful this information is helpful.  Please let me know if you need further assistance.

  • How to edit auto correct in mail

After some use Mail auto correct dictionaty gets occassinally confused with custom words. I would like to know how do I locate and edit the custom dictionary.

Same problem here too.  Maybe it happened with last update, did not seem to happen before.  Also, all my online mail boxes have this going on...
message -> move to -> archive -> online name (all mail)
with these exceptions.  My msn and yahoo accounts do not show at all and my 'on my mac' shows twice, once at the top and once at the bottom.  I think all 3 of these are pop3 accounts, if that makes a difference....
Another weird thing is my msn account does not not show in the dropdown of 'move to' or 'copy to'

  • How do I correct my name as appears in emails

When I send an email from my iPad, my name appears incorrectly, as if  my last name was auto-corrected. How can I change this?

Glad I was able to help.
Interestingly, solutions to Apple issues tend to be pretty straightforward, especially when looking back at them.
For future reference, that's often the trick to figuring them out ... just figure out where would the solution likely be.  I'm trying to say whatever the issue, the solution is likely not too complicated in the world of Apple.
Enjoy your iPad and Apple gear.

  • Turn off auto-correction selectively ?

I really like the auto correction of typing - sometimes. Other times it is totally annoying. (The worst for me is that my name is Mitch and it always "corrects" it to Match and then I have to retype it.). I wish there were a way to tell it to NOT correct certain words and have it remember. Is there anything like that? Thanks.

    It learns.
Type "Mitch" and when then blue x pops with "Match", up, tap it. Do this a few times and it will learn "Mitch".

  • Enable Auto correct Option in Abap Editor

In Our QAS server, we saw a feature of ABAP editor. For some errors a particular icon will come in error window. On clicking the icon it will automatically rectify the error . For example .. IF we change a variable name from name1 to name2 . If the error comes , on clicking that, it will automatically change name1 to name2. My problem is that we are getting this option only in QAS . We want it in development server. Any configuration is reqd ?? Please give ur valuable suggestions..
    Thanking you in advance

    Hello Shankar,
There is one setting that I can think of at the moment. In the ABAP Editor screen, go to the menu Utilities--> Settings, For the "ABAP Editor" tab, there is an option called "Display All Syntax Errors". If you have this option checked, you will no longer be able to see the Auto-Correct option. Of course, this option is user-specific. So Make sure you have this option de-selected.
    Hope this helps...

    Anand Mandalika.

  • How do I turn auto-correct off and still have a spell check?

How do I turn auto-correct off and still have a spell check?

I do not believe this.. you can not disable auto correct without disabling the spell checker.. I am struck dumb by this.. I recently bought a mac for the first time.. ive always used windows.. there are more thngs like this than i expected.. I actually find this so ignorant I am lost for words.. this auto correct is a nightmare for me.. and has already caused me a lot of trouble because I have sent emails where words have been changed and i didnt notice and I have unknowingly insulted people.. i use a regular spell checker quite often but apparently I simply have no choice with safari.. oh well I am going to have to find another browser then.. goodbye safari!.. I also use a lot of shortened words and names etc etc.. like for eg I used the shortened word for problems "probs" and it changes it to "probe" and then i go back and change it back to WHAT I WANT TO SAY and it changes it AGAIN!!!!
Does anyone else feel like this is yet another example of how, more and more, we are being treated like morons?
Ok I'll try to stop ranting.. the real point is it should be possible to have a spell checker without auto correct..

  • Undo auto-correction for typing particular words into Pages

This is starting to drive me nuts - whenever I type the word "march" Pages automatically capitalizes it to "March". Is there any way to stop it from capitalizing this word without turning off auto capitalizing?
I realise it may sound trivial but I am using this word a fair bit and it just takes up time having to constantly go back and correct it, then I have to be careful not to change the sentence or it auto-corrects back again.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

(K_Gal: This primarily addresses RHPC's issue, but does include some comments regarding yours)
    B
    RHPC:
Yours is a different issue than that described in the initial post in this thread.
Pages has several auto-correction features, all set in the auto-correction pane of Pages Preferences. The two indicated by the arrows are the significant ones in this thread as started and in your hijack of this thread.
Fix capitalization (blue arrow) applies a format (CAPITAL or UPPER) to the initial letters of 'sentences' and words identified as 'proper nouns' (such as "March") in the spelling dictionary. It performs no action on 'words' that have been typed with initial capitals.
In the examples above, the first two lines were typed with 'Fix capitalization' unchecked. The second pair of lines were typed using exactly the same keystrokes as the first, but with 'Fix capitalization' checked. Note that both occurrences of 'will' are the same in each set.
"Automatically use spell checker suggestions" (red arrow) does precisely what it says: If a 'word' is not found in the spelling dictionary, the spell checker will make a 'best guess' and suggest that as a possible replacement. If the 'Automatically use…" box is checked, then Pages will immediately accept the first suggestion, replacing the 'questionable word' with the spell checkers first ('best') suggestion.
There are at least two solutions to this issue:
Uncheck the box and don't use auto-correction. (works for either of these issues)
Teach the spellchecker the correct spelling of the Polish name. (does not work in the case of march/March, which is part of the base dictionary)
    To do this:
Go Pages (menu) > Preferences... Auto-Correction
    Uncheck the "Automatically use…" box.
    Close Preferences
Open a new Pages word processing document.
    Type the Polish name.
Ensure that the spelling and capitalization is correct.
Right click on the name and choose Learn Spelling.
    Go Pages > Preferences… Auto-Correction
    Recheck the "Automatically use…" box
    Close Preferences.
    Done.
Pages (and other applications using the system's spell checker dictionary) will now recognize the spelling of this name and will not 'correct' it.
(K_Gal: Unfortunately, when I tried this on "march" the contextual menu did not include the Learn Spelling option , probably because the dictionary already 'knew' how to spell "March". I'd suggest using the Provide Pages Feedback item in the Pages message to report this to apple, and request a feature enhancement to the Fix capitalization feature.)
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Manually Adjust Auto-Correct

Oftentimes, when I'm typing a name, or even a word that actually is a word but Snow Leopard doesn't recognize it, the word changes into something that I don't want. Is there a way for me to access all the corrections and disable the ones I don't want? I know that the Text tab in Language & Text in System Preferences allows me to add custom auto-corrects, but there are a bunch built into the system that I don't want. For instance, I was typing the name "Shapiro", but it auto-corrected it into "Shaper". And sometimes in a long document, I have to manually go through and check everything instead of just a find and replace, for those times when I actually want the corrected word.

Hi, my name is Michal, I come from Slovakia and I need to change the auto-correction on safari from English to Slovak. Will you help me?

even though safari thinks it needs to be auto-corrected.
Global... no, but most apps offer auto correction, spelling and grammar from the Edit menu.
Example... from your Safari menu bar click Edit > Spelling & Grammar then deselect: Check Spelling Automatically

  • Spelling auto-correct on Lumia 1520

I have upgraded to Phone 8.1 and really like it. I am reading about the new features and one talks about Auto-correct as you type a message. My phone does not do this which I like a lot as prevents the dreded auto correct errors, but I see nowhere any way to enable Auto Correct. Is there a way to turn it on and off?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

nether of these two answers solve the problem. I tried both but still see no option to turn on/off the option to auto correct spelling. The spelling does auto correct when you use Shape Writing and it is wrong with names manily but I never get any word that auto corrects when typing in words.
I want to be clear, I do not want the phone to auto correct but would like to know where (if there is one) a place to turn it on or off.
    Thanks for the replies.

  • How to auto-correct by supercripting a word

I've just discovered the auto-correction preferences. We have a product name that has a superscript as part of the name eg. AppleCore where the Core would be superscript. Is there a way I can create an auto-correct that would always take that word and create a superscripted Core ? I can't cut and paste into the auto-correction preferences any text formatted in this way, so I think the only thing I could do is create a bespoke character for the character palette ?!?!? Any ideas ?

    chop,
I haven't been able to get superscripts to work in the Auto-Corrections preference. There's another way to do what you want, although it's not the most elegant way. Type out your word: AppleCore. Go back and superscript the Core. Save that as a character style. From now on, after you type the whole word, go back and highlight the Core, then click on the character style you saved. As I said, not the best solution, but one that works.
