Auto Correcting Things It Shouldn't

So within the last few week my phone started auto correcting things it shouldn't. For example I tried to text "bees" and it changed to "need," "rub" to "run" etc. It never did this before. I didn't change any settings. I didn't add or remove anything from my dictionary. I have the iOS 7.1.1 update. What would cause this and how can I fix it?

Okay, I have done Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary. It will take a little bit for me to see if it works. It doesn't do it all the time, and it doesn't do it to every word.

• Can't turn off auto correct

Im having trouble with turning my auto correct off.
I just updated to yosemite, and i can't turn off the auto correct.
I've gone into settings > keyboard > Text > and un ticked the auto correct box, but it will not stop auto correcting.
Ive had this problem with my previous version of OS X as well.
anyone got any suggestions? i do a lot of typing with abbreviations, and its changing things all the time.

Since I updated my iPad to iOS 5 - spell check works erratically and sporadically as well so I have issues with the way this whole thing works.
Have you tried resetting the Keyboard Dictionary? Settings>General>Reset>Reset Keyboard Dictionary. It is a totally different setting that really shouldn't impact auto correct all - its merely a suggestion borne out of the "Throw enough crap against the wall and hope that something will stick" mentality.
If nothing else works, another standard procedure would be to restore your iPad. If you can restore from a backup that predates this issue, that should work for you.

• I can't turn off auto correct on iPad

When I type an emai, the auto correct above the keyboard keeps suggesting words. I have gone into Settings-General and turned off Auto-Correction (and everything else too). But when I type an email or go into Safari on my iPad, it keeps suggesting words that makes no sense and makes it very inefficient for me. Does anyone know why even after turning auto correction off, it still is enabled?
Thanks

• Why did Word on Office 2013 REMOVE Auto Correct from Right-Click Context Menu??

Hi Microsoft -
I normally don't rant, but this is a killer feature removal, and the reason given is for aesthetics - 'Removal of clutter" is how it's worded here:
[Changes in Office 2013]
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178954(en-us).aspx
I copy n pasted below the operative row from the linked TechNet page as to the reason WHY this critical (and very popular feature) has been removed from Microsoft Office 2013 Word's context-menu: LESS CLUTTER
And your answer is ambiguous and doesn't solve the issue that you created to make things prettier: "Click the AutoCorrect Options button" Then what? ADD EACH WORD MANUALLY?
Please advise ALL OF US that want this feature back how to have our commonly misspelled words fixed and added automatically to the dictionary. If I am missing this in a major way somehow, I apologize completely and will issue a public apology via any
social media platform of your choice. If it really is gone, and I have to manually add the entries into a buried table 6-clicks deep, then I will issue a public excoriation of this feature on as many social platforms of my choice.
Sincerely,
Maximus Mednick

Auto-Correct and certain formatting tools are no longer available from the spelling error context menu.
To make Word 2013 cleaner and less cluttered, we removed AutoCorrect and certain formatting tools from the spelling error context menu. The features are still available in Word 2013 through other entry points within the Word user interface.
Less clutter in the spelling error context menu. This enables users to find popular commands more quickly. In addition, the spelling error context menu now fits better on the screen.
To change AutoCorrect options, do the following:
Choose File -> Options -> Proofing
Choose the AutoCorrect Options button.

Microsoft used to be about allowing users to customize the OS and apps however they want. This was one reason I have always preferred Windows over Mac. There are 5 ways to do any one thing, and you can customize it to do it however you want. It's all about
user choice. Please don't go the way of Apple and force users into the way that you *think* we should do things.

While I whole heartedly agree with this suggestion, if you look through this blog about the design decisions that went into the 2007 ribbon:
Jensen Harris: An Office User Interface Blog -
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jensenh/archive/2008/03/12/table-of-contents.aspx
You'll see that one of the considerations of the ribbon was to ELIMINATE/REDUCE customization because it was costing large corporate customers too much time/money to support their users with 2003 customized menu/toolbars. In other words, the ribbon
was intentionally built as a fixed design so that average user cannot change it. The QAT was an afterthought, a sop, to allow users minimal customization.
They found that the 2007 lock down was too much of a "good thing", too much like the good old "IBM 360 green screen" (even if most people don't recognize the reference), so in 2010 they
re-introduced limited Ribbon customization within the UI.
But you still can't customize the default tabs. And to add injury to insult, if you do want to customize a default tab and go to the effort of trying to recreate the default tabs and groups
within the Ribbon UI, you'll eventually find that YOU CAN'T'! There is no way inside the UI to force the buttons to layout the same way! AHHH!
Even in 2007,
EXPERTS have had the option of creating custom Ribbons/tabs by editing XML, but that is pretty serious programming, out of scope for 99% of users.
The "solution" to the problem was too simple. Just add an option to allow users to turn on the old menu UI. Even if it had been buried as a registry hack, the people who really wanted it would have learned about it. Then MS could have collected statistics
on usage that would have "proved" that the menu was preferred over the ribbon. The thing is, if the ribbon was defaulted "out of the box", over time people would eventually all switch over to it. Simply because it was the default, because MS only produced
new training material referring for the ribbon
Now, I'll concede that the ribbon really may be more "intuitive", but only for new users. For long time users the change is very jarring.
They made the same choice with Windows 8. In the last Windows 8 consumer Preview there was a registry hack to bypass the Start Screen. I learned about it in July or August. But MS was so sure the Start screen/metro was the only way to go they
rushed out a Windows Update to eliminate that registry entry. And it was eliminated from the RTM version.
WHY?
Why did they remove the user's right to chose the UI that worked best for them? I don't know.
</end rant> sorry, this is a hot button for me.

• How to edit auto correct in mail

After some use Mail auto correct dictionaty gets occassinally confused with custom words. I would like to know how do I locate and edit the custom dictionary.

Same problem here too. Maybe it happened with last update, did not seem to happen before. Also, all my online mail boxes have this going on...
message -> move to -> archive -> online name (all mail)
with these exceptions. My msn and yahoo accounts do not show at all and my 'on my mac' shows twice, once at the top and once at the bottom. I think all 3 of these are pop3 accounts, if that makes a difference....
Another weird thing is my msn account does not not show in the dropdown of 'move to' or 'copy to'

• IOS 4.2.1 auto-correction bug in gmail web interface

Seems to be a bug in 4.2.1, relating to auto-correction of spelling errors within the gmail web interface (i.e. within safari)...
Whenever I'm typing, if I make a spelling error for which auto-correction suggests an alternative, attempting to cancel the auto-correct by hitting the little X icon next to the suggested word has no effect - the suggestion stays there... the only things that can be done are to either (a) backspace and retype the word correctly, or (b) hit space and allow the erroneous correction to be made.
Auto-correct appears to work fine for other sites accessed within Safari, and also other apps... seems to just be isolated to the gmail web interface (at least as far as I'm experiencing atm)
Anyone else noticing this? Any workarounds or fixes suggested?

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem on an iPad running iOS 4.2.1 (8C148)--- exactly as you described: I can't cancel individual autocorrections. This is a major problem with typing on the iPad, because it's hard to be precise with the keyboard, but technical words need to be canceled. It happens in gmail, but not some other text boxes in Safari, such as this one.

• What happened to Auto-Correct in the iOS 7 update & can it be fixed?

I am sooo frustrated & I can't take it anymore!!!
My keyboard has essentially taken on a mind of it's own since I did the iOS 7 update. And by the 'coded' messages I receive from family & friends, followed by "#%*+ed Auto-Correct!!!" I know I'm not the only one!
I find it changes words that are spelled correctly & are grammatically sound into something different. It doesn't know what an apostrophe is anymore. It has no sense of humor 'cause it can't figure out how to lol without capitalizing or turning it into something else. (My sister Quoll'ed at me earlier!)
What's goin' on & how can I get it back to the only sorta-sucky, but mostly funny stuff it did in iOS 6?
Thanks.

I've observed this too and have written to Apple feedback. Suggest everyone else do so as well.
What's happening is they've attempted to implement an autocorrect system that doesn't just look at the current word but the current word and the previous word. In theory that's a great idea, as sometimes the correct spelling will be dependent on context. Mostly, though, its effects are too aggressive and I find I'm ending up with many more errors than under iOS 6 (and I'm fairly accurate on the iP*).
The thing I specifically complained out – since it makes no sense at all – is the way iOS 7 autocorrect seems to hate commas!
If I type a phrase like "the line, therefore" iOS 7 will attempt to turn "line," into some a word without punctuation, e.g. "lines" or "lined". Only after I've typed "therefore" will it offer me the possibility of returning to what I actually typed ("line,"). And if I'm in a rush and don't tap the [x] on the proposed "correction" in time then I'm stuck with it and have to go back and manually edit. (Or I don't notice and end up sending someone a complete nonsense of a sentence.)
This kind of autocorrect is completely nuts. Especially on the iPhone, where you have to go to a different screen of the keyboard to type a comma, so you're hardly going to do it by accident! And on the iPad the corrections almost never involve adding letters that are physically close to the comma key on the keyboard, so again, you're hardly going to hit the comma key by accident if you want, for example, "lines".
My recommendation to Apple was that auto-correct should always respect all punctuation. (Or there should be a setting we switch on for "respect punctuation".)
And that autocorrect should focus on trying to correct the kinds of "real" errors that are made by tapping on adjacent keys instead of aggressively trying to predict what we're about to say and actually changing our words.
In the meantime, I've set up a custom shortcut [,,] which resolves to [, ] – basically on the same principle as two spaces resolving to a period. When I remember to use it, it mostly works quite well at giving me commas that stay stuck.

• Stopping Fireworks from auto correcting

So I am trying to create a link with the hotspot tool. The link includes a "&" symbol which Fireworks automatically auto corrects to use the ascii code &
With the end file being exported to PDF, this does not work. I need to know how to stop Fireworks from auto correcting this or to force the original & symbol to be accepted. I though I might be able to find something in preferences but no luck. Any help is appreciated.

3 or 4 things you can do.
(1) Turn off this "resume" feature for all applications via the checkbox near the bottom of the System Preferences, General pane.
(2) Close all windows by hand before you quit safari.
(3) option-quit safari.
(4) Launch Safari from the dock using shift-click.

• How can I get auto correct to recognize a name used very often? It is in my address book but auto correct does t recognize it?

How can I get auto correct on my iPhone 4 to recognize a name that is already in my address book? It doesn't recognize it and offers no suggestions.

The cleanest way to get things straight now and as you proceed into the future with Time Machine is to start over. If the new machine is setup the way you want and has all the data placed onto it I suggest you erase and re-format the TM backup device and start a Full initial TM backup.
I believe this will pay dividends now and over time and avoid future problems for you. Jst before going to bed crank up the Full TM backup and it will be all done by morning time.

• Colour of the Background Picture and auto correction while typing

Hey
since 2,5 weeks i own an iPad. I really like it, there are only two things i dislike:
1. I changed the background Picture:http://kitecoach.co.uk/images/categories_desc/photos/big/originals/kitesurf5med. jpeg
I like the bright colours. But at the lower end, the sand becomes much darker when used as background while the colours of the sky and the kites are normal. It's really annoying, why do the colours at the lower end of the picture change and how to stop it?
2. Is there a possibility to turn off the auto correction?
Thanks for the answers

That is done with every picture on the home screen, there is no way to stop the iPad doing that… you can work around with a graphics tool - select the lower portion and make it brighter. And scale it down… the size on the web is 4288 × 2848, the iPad has 1024 x 768…

• Greek Spell Check and Auto-Correction

Hi, I want to know if I can add a Greek dictionary that will have the same features as the English Language has on Lion.
Why Apple didn't integrate such a simple thing. To make every user from different places in the world to have the convenience of Auto-Correction they have on iOS on OS X too. Greek Auto-Correction exist on iOS why not on Lion?

Yes, see
http://m10lmac.blogspot.com/2011/06/extra-spell-checking-dictionaries-for.html
Nobody can tell you why Apple hasn't included some feature that you want, but you can ask them for it here:

• How can I turn off auto-correct in my iPad?

Is there a way to turn off auto-correct in my iPad? It makes unwanted changes, and distracts me from my writing. I was able to turn off auto-correct in Safari on my Macs, and that has made things much better.

• Spell Checker errors & auto-correct gone mad

I have had a problem for awhile now with bad spell checking.
If I make a typo, the softeware learns the mispelled word - and edits properly spelled instances of the word to be wrong later.
("the softeware" - I don't know if its Apple's or a 3rd party's).
I am getting "Teh" errors, transpositions & complete case changes, for example words ending in "-ed" being changed
to "-ing" endings here & there. A few other recurring ones, as well.
Its acting like a keylogger associated with firmware in the darn keyboard!
I've run checks for spyware & keyloggers & they came up negative.
I can't tell if its in the core OS softeware, or being driven by a third party test drive.
I can't seem to shut off enough spell checking to solve the problem.
Example: the "e" in softeware above was an autocorrect, not what I typed & saw typed.
The corrections are more than "ie" & "ei" transpositions & sometimes involved letters across the keyboard.
Any ideas or solutions for this? Am I the only person with this problem?
(I tried to find a close enough topic, but they were either old & archived, or not really quite my issue).

How do you mean "don't know what software I'm using?"
If the phenomenon occurs across most apps that are word intensive, then it appears not to be tied to any one.
Something is recognizing a problem not there & "correcting" it, because I can see it happen & its not all due to operator error typos.
I gather there's predominantly one spell checker engine across most applications, not one for each, if the symptoms are broad. IF that can be pinned on a "spellcheck" function. It isn't strictly a spellcheck.
"Substitutions" yes is more accurate than calling it true spellchecking & I might be rmisrepresenting the phenomenon to call it that.
Whatever is causing it, is learning & auto-correcting words that were may or may not be wrong. 2 letter pairs is mostly what happens. Or a capitalization of the 2nd letter in a word, to match the first letter: "IT" paired at the beginning of a sentence is a common manifestation.
I can't find anything that could be left from an uninstalled test driven application.
Your pointing to "Language & Text" may be valuable. The "ie" & "ei" substitutions are fairly common & German was one of the language options turned on, along with French & Italian – although I'm not sure what that panel even controls. I'm removing all options except English.
I haven't seen a lot about this kind of thing on here, so I am assuming that its rare & likely something not part of the Apple suite of applications. I'm simply trying to narrow down what's going on.
