Auto-ejecting external discs and noisy fan on Mountain Lion
After upgrading to OS X 10.8 my MacBook Pro (late 2010) started to auto-eject external discs (flashdisk, camera memory card, MyBook) - what to do to sto stop it?
Sama after upgrade fan started to be very noisy without reason. I tried to reset SMC but it is still same

I agree that I should change the LAN domain from .local to something like .internal or whatever. I've been running with .local for 5 years on snow leopard server and never had any problems so that was a low priority.
I hope I'm just not seeing some obvious setting in main.cf

where did this backup window come from on my desktop. It specifies personal data & settings and tells me when the next backup is scheduled [which I never set up]. I have always used time machine to backup to an external disc and within the last 2 weeks, this backup window keeps appearing. Where did it come from? Thanks for any help
To check your S.M.A.R.T status open disk utility and click on your drive and then click on the info icon.

External Discs and flash cards won't leave, I always get the message "close all applications"even when all applications are closed???So i have always to stop the computer.
I opened Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities) and looked what was inside but did not something special. After restart everything seems allright now. Muchas gracias.

Imac intel core duo (2008) crashed and wont reboot after Mountain Lion upgrade

Hi, my imac was loaded with Snow Leopard and I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few days ago and today when I got back from leaving it a few hours the screen went funny!!! (see pic) and it wont reboot. The same screen appears straight away when restarting. I have tried holding down the shift for safe start but it didnt work and also a nv/ram pram reset (but only heard one 'mac sound')
I have my old snow leopard disk..............somewhere!!! but I'm not sure if I can boot from them if I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion via the app store download??
I didnt do a boot disk! (yes I know) or a back up (yep again...I know!) so if anyone has any ideas on how to help :-) I'd be very grateful!!

PS is the problem called a Kernel Panic????I'm afraid my next piece of advice you won't like. I think you need to erase the drive and reinstall Mountain Lion from scratch.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Wiped hard drive and tried to reinstall Mountain Lion but it installed Lion instead.
Everything was fine except that it was going slow from 2 years worth of clutter. I wiped the hard drive and continued on with the installation instructions without noticing until now that it installed Lion instead of Mountain Lion. What do I do? If I have to reinstall, I'd rather not have to download it again. I have it on my external hard drive but it won't show up since I did all this.

Select the drive you want to reformat in the Disk Utility Sidebar and make sure it say's Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If so, simply hit the Erase button. Once that's done go back to Time Machine and reselect it if needed.
If you continue to have problems with the drive, I've always used OWC drives with few issues. Others use Lacie drives. -
I purchased a Mac book Pro in Aug 2012 with lion and have upgraded to mountain lion. I currently am looking to install the segate 750 gig hybrid drive. I watching video I shows me needing a OSX 10 disk to boot off of when the new disk is in and the use time capsule to restore system from back up drive to new hybrid. Hope I got this correct so far. that being said my Mac Book did not come with a disk therefore is one available, when I get to point of restoring from back up with it be the same mountain lion system I had. Connect the new hybrid drive to your MBP. Start up your MBP holding the OPTION key, the two HDD icons will appear. Select the 'restore' icon on the right. When you get to the menu where you have 4 options, select Disk Utility. Format the drive and then you can use the option of restoring it from Time Machine.

I have an HP Printer/scanner, and since upgrading to Mountain Lion I can no longer scan on my HP. HP tells me that I can get an upgrade app from 'Apple Software Upgrade' . Does anyone know how to do this?
HP couldn't find its own apps with both hands and a flashlight.
As of Lion all scanning functions are incorporated natively in OS X. You can scan three ways:
Use Preview: File > Import from scanner
Use Image Capture
(Preview and Image Capture are both in your Applications folder.)
System Preferences > Print & Scan. Select your HP and use the Scan tab.
If you have HP's "Image Zone" software installed, you no longer need it and it no longer works anyway. -
iPhone 5 doesn't work with Mac OS 10.5.8 - do I need to ugrade to 10.6 and then upgrade to Mountain Lion or can I just upgrade to Mtn Lion right away?
At least to 10.6.8. You must do this to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

Search and Document History in Mountain Lion
Anyone out there figured out what Apple is doing with the Search and Document History in Mountain Lion? Here's my beef:
Missing History in Finder. Finder used to have a "History" button in the sidebar that would track docs by when you last used them--yeterday, this week, this month, etc. This was SUPER helpful--but it seems to have disappeared. Anyone know how to make it reappear, or has Apple decided that I don't really need it?
Really Hard to Search by Filename. In the old version, there was a button that would allow me to search by filename, but the new version makes you click through several very janky layers to do that. Anyone have a shortcut? Or advice on how to reorient my brain to the new search logic?
Thanks!FileVault is one option, as etresoft points out. But you should note that e-mail is an inherently insecure medium. You should never transmit confidential information about patients via e-mail. That's like writing it on a postcard and mailing it... You're trusting everyone between you and the recipient not to read it. You need to either discuss cases only using something like a unique ID number that cannot be linked to the patient without access to your records, or you need to use encrypted e-mail (which is a pain to get set up, because everyone involved needs to participate).

I wanted to purchase and download OS X Mountain Lion but could not. Message told me that I did not have enough memory to download. I have 1GB of ram but they are saying that I Mountain Lion needs 2 GB. Are they talking desk top memory or what? I do have 17 GB of memory available. What to do?
They are talking about RAM, not storage. See this, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US It provides you steps to install more RAM. Of course, provided you purchase that ram.

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed. For me to use XCode 4.5, I must have 10.7 or later. What is the best way to go ahead? Should I install OS X Lion and then move to Mountain Lion, or can I straight away install latest Mountain Lion, i.e. 10.8.2
You can directly install Mountain Lion 10.8.0 to 10.6.8, and then apply the 10.8.2 Update.

i guess you could put the aiport utility app on your iphone, click on the aiport express there, it will show you how many devices are connected to it and the mac addresses of those devices.

recently updated iMac and macbook pro to mountain lion. Now mouse and track pad operate backwards i.e. scroll up and page scrolls down. how do you fix this?
System Preferences > Mouse -- deselect "Scroll direction: natural." Do the same for the trackpad > Scroll & Zoom preference.
